Upon our arrival, Audi offered us the chance to visit the birthplace of the mighty R8 in Neckarsulm, which is home to one Audi's two main German manufacturing sites, the other being at its headquarters in Ingolstadt. The Neckarsulm complex is only about half the size of the Ingolstadt campus, but along with manufacturing the A4, A6 and A8, it is also home to Quattro GmbH.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-factory-tour/732887/"><img width="250" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="177" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/au070156_medium_opt.jpg" alt="" /></a>Quattro GmbH is Audi's in-house tuning group, roughly equivalent to AMG at Mercedes-Benz and the M-Division at BMW. That means all S and RS models are developed here and the RS4 and RS6 are built here in addition to the R8. The R8 is built in a dedicated building by a team of 240 specially selected assemblers working on two shifts. Right now, the R8 team is turning out about 27 to 28 cars per day, but Audi's manufacturing engineers are refining the process to try up that to 30 cars per day. Read on to learn more about how and where the R8 is created.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-factory-tour/low/">Audi R8 Factory Tour</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-factory-tour/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/r8060051_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-factory-tour/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/r8060040_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-factory-tour/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/r8060048_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-factory-tour/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/r8060035_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-factory-tour/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/r8060036_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/03/autoblog-visits-the-audi-r8-factory-in-neckarsulm-germany/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Autoblog visits the Audi R8 factory in Neckarsulm, Germany</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/03/autoblog-visits-the-audi-r8-factory-in-neckarsulm-germany/">Autoblog visits the Audi R8 factory in Neckarsulm, Germany</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 03 Apr 2008 15:29:00 EST. The dignitary-laden event featured a trip down memory lane in which key vehicles produced at the site over its history were displayed, each representing a particular benchmark over the 100-year history. The culmination of the event featured two new R8s being driven on stage to signify the sports car's production kickoff at Neckarsulm. To prepare the facility for this new task, &euro;28,000,000 has been invested to ready the R8 production line, where 250 employees will be dedicated to the car's manufacture.<br /><br />The R8 will find itself in good company at Neckarsulm, as that facility also builds the A6 Allroad, S6 sedan and wagon, and S8 super sedan. Check out a photo gallery of the R8 manufacturing line after the jump.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Related Posts:</span><br />

<p>Audi's next salvo in its rapidly expanding softroader arsenal, the Q5, will be built in Ingolstadt, Germany. The announcement came this week, courtesy of Audi's Chariman of the Board, Dr. Martin Winterkorn. Production of the new model is expected to commence in 2008, involving about 1,700 workers. The decision is being touted by the automaker as an important demonstration of their commitment to their assembly operations in Germany. This is the second sign of the automaker's investment in its motherland, as Audi announced not long ago that its coming R8 supercar is to be build in Neckarsulm, a German city near Stuttgart.</p>
