With the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra all getting major upgrades recently, there has also been plenty of speculation how Ford will respond as it looks to maintain its title as America's best-selling truck. Last week, Automotive News reported that Ford is looking to make a significant fuel economy gain with its 2015 F-150, and now Reuters is saying that the automaker will be offering some sort of peek at the new truck at next month's Detroit Auto Show.

The report seems to indicate that Ford might have a concept vehicle on display at the show, but when Autoblog reached out to the Blue Oval for comment, Mike Levine, Ford's truck communications manager, told us "we're highlighting our all-new global lineup of commercial vehicles at NAIAS, including the Transit and Transit Connect vans. We have no other news to announce at this time."

Thus, Ford could be showing absolutely nothing related to its F-Series future, or it might clandestinely slip something onto its display - a rendering, perhaps, a cutaway vehicle, a technology display, a concept, or perhaps a full-blown production vehicle, although the latter strikes us as highly unlikely given how far away the new production model actually figures to be.

All reports do seem to point to the fact that the next F-150, which could debut in late 2014 for the 2015 model year, will feature extensive use of aluminum body panels to help shave more than 700 pounds from its curb weight in order to help improve fuel economy by as much as 20 percent.
Ford to counter GM's new trucks by offering peek at 2015 F-150 in Detroit? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Dec 2012 13:16:00 EST.
The 2013 Detroit Auto Show is shaping up to be a good one. Automakers that had eschewed the show in the past are returning, and this year's show will see manufacturers like Jaguar, Land Rover, Maserati as well as Ferrari show off their wares for our viewing pleasure.

Chinese automakers have snapped up floor space in Cobo Hall, with Guangzhou Automobile Group Corporation planning to debut an all-new model. The hall itself will also show off a few changes, including a new three-story atrium that will play host to some of the event's larger debuts. The Detroit News also reports that manufacturers are making some substantial changes to their own booths.

For example, Cadillac vehicles will be displayed separate from the rest of the General Motors brands this year. Visitors can now find the luxury manufacturer near Volvo, Ferrari and Porsche. Meanwhile, Ford plans to use period actors and classic vehicles to draw links to some of the more illustrious moments in the company's past, and Toyota will make make use of a portion of Cobo Hall's 30,000 square-feet of additional show space.

Naturally, we'll be on the scene in Cobo, so come back in about a month to see the best Detroit has to offer in 2013.
Luxury, Chinese automakers returning to Detroit Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Dec 2012 15:46:00 EST.
Acura says it will show a prototype of its 2014 MDX crossover at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, and we'll admit that the announcement has left us in a bit of confusion. See, the Acura press release says that the MDX proto will present "Aero Sculpture" design language, "alluring proportions" and "arching body lines." It has been accompanied by a sketch (above, click to enlarge) that, indeed, shows off a swoopy, alluring CUV.

Yet we have spy shots from two months ago of what is supposed to be the 2014 MDX, and unless the camouflage is actually some sort of vehicular moo moo, there isn't really a swoopy line on it. It is stout and substantial, but not in a way that makes us think of "Aero Sculpture." We'll know in a few weeks where the truth resides. It would appear that Acura's rendering artist has done a masterful fade on the rear glass/D-pillar area of the vehicle.

If you want to see the answer in real time, the reveal will be broadcast as it happens on Acura's webcast site. There's a press release below with the details.
Continue reading Acura will show all-new MDX Prototype in Detroit

Acura will show all-new MDX Prototype in Detroit originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Dec 2012 16:29:00 EST.
We expected the successor to the Ferrari Enzo, for now a model referred to as the F70, to be the showstopper of the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Finally seeing the real car will be good news whenever it happens, but even better news is that Inside Line has just reported that the F70 will be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

We have no idea what the gigundously powerful coupe will look like - the rendering above is the work of KGP Photography, whose spy shooters have shot quite a number of prototypes hidden under enormous amounts of camo. We do know it will have a carbon fiber chassis with a Formula One-style build developed by one of the key players in the F1 team - the chassis will be 20-percent lighter than the Enzo's, yet stiffer. Within it will be something like 900 horsepower unleashed from a mid-mounted V12 assisted by an evolution of the energy-regenerating HY-KERS unit. Weight for the whole car has been rumored to come in a snort-inducing 2,500 pounds.

Suddenly, January in Detroit isn't looking quite so bleak.
Ferrari Enzo successor F70 to be unveiled at 2013 Detroit Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Oct 2012 17:45:00 EST.
The replacement for the aging Jeep Liberty is expected to debut at next January's Detroit Auto Show, and when it does, a brand-new Pentastar powertrain will reportedly be spinning underhood. According to Automotive News, Chrysler will offer a downsized 3.2-liter V6 in the Liberty mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission sourced from ZF. The current Pentastar V6 displaces 3.6 liters and has been well-received by both critics and buyers in everything from the refreshed Dodge Journey to new Chrysler 300.

Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne reiterated to AN that efficient transmissions play a huge role in the development of engines. "If we had known the eight-speed was coming, we could have made the [3.6-liter] Pentastar a 3.2-liter," he said.

Currently, the Liberty is available with a 3.7-liter SOHC V6 that produces 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque backed by a four-speed automatic transmission. This new 3.2-liter/nine-speed combo will surely improve performance, not to mention overall efficiency, though specific power and fuel economy details are still up in the air at this time.
Next Jeep Liberty to get shrunken Pentastar V6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Mar 2012 14:16:00 EST.
The 2012 Detroit Auto Show is off to a galloping start. Organizers estimate more than 750,000 people are expected to show up to take in the newest hardware from the world's automakers. Sunday saw 102,918 people attend the exhibition, which is an increase of more than 3,800 people from last year. Likewise, Saturday turned out to be the largest opening day for the Detroit Auto Show in five years. All told, 195,024 people strolled through Cobo hall to take in the sights. This year, the show features more than 500 vehicles, so there's plenty to see.

And it's not just wild exotics and far-flung concepts, either. With key new reveals like the Dodge Dart, Ford Fusion and Cadillac ATS, visitors can take in models they can expect to see on the sho room floor within a few short months.
Audi has been known for all-wheel drive and wagon rooflines for a lot longer than it has been making crossovers. Before cranking out the Q7, Q5 and Q3, the German automaker was making Avant Quattro wagons that carved up alpine mountain passes like nobody's business. And then came the Allroad.

Bridging the gap between a wagon and an SUV, the Allroad versions of the A4 and A6 take a similar approach to the Subaru Outback and Volvo XC70, giving the wagon a rougher, go-anywhere image compared to the standard Avant estate. We used to get the Allroad in the North American market, but after a brief hiatus, the A4 Allroad is back.

We got a chance to drive the soft-roader just last month, but couldn't resist the temptation to snap it again for the Ingolstadt aficionados among us as it made its official North American debut alongside the new A4 and S4 here at the Detroit Auto Show. Click the thumbnails above to check it out in high resolution.
Audi heralds the return of the A4 Allroad originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 14:01:00 EST.
C is for Cookie. At least, that's what the baking industry lobbyist known as Cookie Monster would have us believe. At Toyota they have another idea, where C is not for Cookie, it's not for Car and it's not for Compact. In the latest addition to the Prius family, C is for City.

What you're looking at is a new, smaller hybrid from Toyota, which is eagerly growing the Prius range from one four-door to include the Prius V (for Versatility), the Prius plug-in hybrid and this, the Prius C. It's both smaller and more affordable than the existing Prius range, while delivering superlative fuel economy figures. In fact, with a 50-mpg combined rating, the Prius C claims the best economy of any car this side of a plug-in EV.

Motivation is provided by a 1.5-liter four that, together with the electric motor, delivers up to 99 horsepower at peak (compared to the Prius liftback's 134hp). It's also more nimble than its bigger brother, and more affordable: when the Prius C reaches showrooms in the spring, it will wear a sticker price under $19,000. In the meantime, you can check out our gallery of high-resolution images from the show floor above, the stock images below and jump into the press release for more details.
Continue reading Toyota Prius C brings hybrid economy to the masses for under $19,000

Toyota Prius C brings hybrid economy to the masses for under $19,000 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 11:30:00 EST.
Toyota can justifiably be proud of its position not only as one of the largest automakers in the world, but also the world leader in hybrid vehicles. In fact, the Japanese automaker claims that half of all hybrids sold are Toyotas. But it didn't get there by resting on its proverbial laurels, and it isn't going to maintain (let alone increase) its market share by doing so, either. That's where the concept car you see here comes in.

Taking position as something of a Prius of the future, the NS4 concept cuts a striking profile - certainly more striking than the current kamm-tailed Prius. But even though the technologies it encompasses are targeted to reach the market by around 2015, the show-car details - like that eminently dentable front beak -probably won't.

While Toyota works on all manner of electric and fuel cell powertrains, the NS4 packs a similar plug-in hybrid system as the current Prius PHEV. But the show car encompasses a slew of other technologies, like a smartphone-like interface to monitor and control everything from the air conditioning to the battery charge.

Toyota has also packed the NS4 with its latest pre-collision and blind-spot monitoring systems, adaptive headlights and four new types of glass - the one part of the car we probably take most for granted. Of course, this being a concept car, Toyota has also replaced the side mirrors with an around-view camera system, but laws being what they are for now, don't expect to see that in showrooms just yet.

There's plenty more technological details to digest in the press release after the jump, but for a closer look check out the high-res galleries of live shots from the show floor here in Detroit and the stock images from the automaker.
Continue reading Toyota NS4 concept glimpses at Prius of the future

Toyota NS4 concept glimpses at Prius of the future originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 10:29:00 EST.
Those of us on this side of the pond in the market for a luxury crossover should be familiar with the gargantuan Audi Q7 and its little brother, the Q5. Overseas the German automaker also offers an even more compact Q3. Today on the floor of the Detroit Auto Show, Audi announced it will be bringing the Q3 to the North American market, and this is the show car with which they broke the news.

Called the Q3 Vail, what we have here is a concept version of the overseas-market crossover with some added off-road trim. Named for the Colorado ski resort, the Q3 Vail has lower body cladding similar to the treatment on Audi's Allroad wagons, in matte grey to contrast with the glossy red paint job. The theme is further accented by aluminum underbody guard plates and extra lighting, with 20-inch wheels to round out the package. The red, black and grey color theme carries into the cabin, and there's a 314-horsepower, 2.5-liter turbo five-cylinder powering all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic for an impressive 5.5-second sprint to 62 mph.

There's more to digest in the press release after the jump, and both stock and live images in the dual galleries. But what interested customers need to know now is that Audi is targeting a U.S. market launch for the existing production Q3,which will continue to be built by Seat in Spain, sometime next year.

The Hyundai Veloster got off to a solid commercial and critical start in 2011, and while the eccentric hatchback has only been on the market for a few months, it's already found its fair share of friends, outselling competitors like the Honda CR-Z and Scion tC straight away.

We can see why - Veloster offers a unique mix of cut-price mix of funkiness, utility, connectivity and efficiency. However, it's also fair to say that its direct-injected 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder skews far more eco than sport. The Veloster's 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque is enough to have fun on curvy roads if you're really willing to stick your foot in it, but its performance is hardly neck snapping.

Given the three-door's sporty styling, some have suggested that there's a bit of a disconnect between the way the Veloster accelerates and the way it looks. Hyundai has apparently heard those barbs, and they've turned to forced induction for the answer. Enter the 2013 Veloster Turbo seen here, which rings up 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 194 pound-feet of torque from 1,750 rpm thanks to the addition of a twin-scroll turbo and a unique motor-actuated wastegate. Those power figures put it in the thick of the hunt with pricier performers like the Volkswagen GTI, not to mention the Honda Civic Si and Mini Cooper S, with a better weight-to-power ratio than any of them.

Visually, there will be no mistaking the Veloster Turbo for its normally aspirated kin - the new front end should make sure of that. While the Turbo retains the same headlamps and a similar overall form, Hyundai has replaced the standard car's modest chrome-edged grille slot and lower fascia with a massive hexagonal opening for better breathing and rearview mirror intimidation. The gaping maw extends both above and below the bumper, and it's bookmarked by a new set of foglights.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo is a mighty mite

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo is a mighty mite originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 15:10:00 EST.
With the new year in full swing and the Detroit Auto Show now just days away, the new debuts have been rolling in. And here we have Volvo's centerpiece for the rapidly approaching auto expo: the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept.

Based, as you might have guessed, on the production XC60 crossover, this technological concept packs a similar drivetrain to the V60 Plug-in Hybrid that just entered production. While its stouter counterpart utilizes a diesel to fill out the internal-combustion side of the hybrid equation, the XC60 concept packs a gasoline engine: those front wheels are driven by a 280-horsepower turbo four coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, with a 70hp electric motor driving the rear wheels for through-the-road all-wheel drive.

The result is what Volvo stretches to claim is a 100 mpg fuel economy rating in hybrid mode, 35 miles on electric propulsion alone, or a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds using the battery as a booster. There's plenty more to digest in the press release after the jump, so click through to delve in, and don't forget to scope out the high-resolution image gallery for a closer look.
Continue reading Volvo plugging XC60 hybrid concept in Detroit

Volvo plugging XC60 hybrid concept in Detroit originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 14:30:00 EST.
We're still a couple weeks away from the Detroit Auto Show, but the Lexus LF-Lc concept has leaked thanks to the crew at Road & Track and their YouTube account.

We still don't know much about Lexus' Detroit-bound concept, but the swoopy coupe combines some of the more emotive elements of the LFA, along with the grille of the LF-Gh concept that eventually formed the basis of the Lexus GS. The massively elongated hood terminates with headlamps that plummet deep into the air intakes and a more extreme grille than that found on the Predator-esque fascia of the Gh.

With an "Lc" designation, this could signal Lexus' intention of building an LS-based coupe to take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz SL, but until the official curtains are pulled in Detroit, we'll have to wait and see.

In the meantime, check out the video after the jump for the unintentional early reveal. As long as it stays on YouTube...
Continue reading Road & Track leaks Lexus LF-Lc concept

Road & Track leaks Lexus LF-Lc concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Dec 2011 21:55:00 EST.
In just a few weeks, we'll be feasting our eyes on the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe under the bright lights of the Detroit Auto Show. And while the endless spy shots and leaked images have done a good job of showing us exactly what the new coupe looks like, this in-person video gives us a glimpse of what the new Hyundai sports cars looks like in the wild - inside and out.

We're slowly warming to the new Veloster-inspired front fascia, and the other visual changes for 2013 have been easier to appreciate. The revised taillamps look nice, and we dig the wheel design of the 3.8 R-Spec model shown in this video. V6-equipped Genesis Coupes will now be good for 345 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, routed to the ground via a six-speed manual or optional eight-speed automatic. Turbocharged four-cylinder models will still produce a more than respectable 271 hp and 275 lb-ft with the same transmission choices.

The videos, available after the jump, give us a glimpse inside the new Genesis Coupe, and though we can't see much more than the gauge cluster and steering wheel, it doesn't appear that too much has changed inside. More interesting is a brief second video clip with a first-person acceleration run, though in truth, it doesn't reveal much more than the engine sound because of the way it's shot.

We'll be sure to give you a closer look when the Hyundai makes its debut in Detroit next month, so stay tuned.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets the real-life walkaround treatment

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets the real-life walkaround treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Dec 2011 13:59:00 EST.
Just days after confirming its presence at next month's Detroit Auto Show, Nissan has released a shadowy teaser image revealing the profile of its Pathfinder Concept.

According to Nissan, the showcar " takes all of Pathfinder's traditional SUV hallmarks and wraps them in a new platform and dramatic new aerodynamic body," all of which goes some way toward corroborating long-held rumors that the production car will transition to a unibody architecture.

Having said that, in the brief statement after the jump, Nissan also refers to the seven-seat concept's drivetrain as sporting "4-wheel drive" (not all-wheel drive), suggesting that the brand's archetypal utility vehicle will retain at least some of its go-anywhere capability.

While we can't make out much from this teaser image, we can see a new, unique sheetmetal wave just below the greenhouse that serves to define the fenders. Jacking up the brightness and contrast on the teaser photo suggests a traditional roofline with integrated cargo rails, though it isn't clear what the back end of the vehicle looks like. Five-spoke wheels round out what we can see.

Nissan says the production Pathfinder will power into dealerships in the fall of 2012, but you'll be able to see it right here when it debuts in Detroit on January 9. While you're waiting, check out the new page that Nissan has created for the Pathfinder on its website.
Continue reading Nissan teases Pathfinder Concept ahead of Detroit reveal

Nissan teases Pathfinder Concept ahead of Detroit reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 13:59:00 EST.
Nissan is gearing up for the Detroit Auto Show and two new concepts will grace the automaker's show stand, along with a Detroit-inspired food truck to keep the throngs satiated.

But more important than free hipster grub is the introduction of the Pathfinder Concept, which Nissan claims will inspire the next-generation utility vehicle's styling before the production model debuts later in 2012 and goes on sale towards the end of next year. Considering the current Pathfinder has been around since 2005 (with a facelift in 2008), it's due for a thorough overhaul. Persistent rumors have suggested that the next Pathfinder will eschew the body-on-frame architecture of the outgoing model in favor of a more car-like unibody.

Joining the Pathfinder Concept will be an all-electric van which we're assuming could be based on the NV series. Nissan says it's a concept that's suitable for both families and businesses, and continues its commitment to emissions-free motoring. Check the release after the break for the full details.
Continue reading Nissan confirms Pathfinder concept and more for Detroit

Nissan confirms Pathfinder concept and more for Detroit originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 14:28:00 EST.
A spokesperson from Lexus has confirmed that an updated version of the company's range-topping LX 570 sport utility vehicle will debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show next month. The current LX - and its corporate cousin, the Toyota Land Cruiser - have been with us since the 2008 model year, so it's about time for a nip/tuck.

Don't expect a major overhaul, however. Bill Kwong, Lexus Communications Specialist, tells Autoblog that the changes to the LX will mostly be cosmetic, consisting of slightly updated sheetmetal as well as changes to both the front and rear fascias. We expect the interior to carry over largely unchanged (perhaps some infotainment upgrades), and the 5.7-liter V8 underhood will likely carry over, as well, though some slight massaging for the sake of fuel economy could be in order.

Still, Lexus knows that the $80,000 LX is not a high volume model here in the United States. Kwong reminds Autoblog that changes to the LX as a whole are largely dictated by the European and Australian markets, where the vehicle has more substantial sales figures. In 2010, Lexus moved just 3,983 LX 570s here in the States. During the same year, Cadillac sold 26,874 Escalade SUVs and Mercedes-Benz hustled 19,943 GL-Class models out the door.

We'll have the full details on the updated LX direct from Cobo Hall in just a few weeks.
Updated Lexus LX to debut at Detroit Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 13:53:00 EST.
Corroborating long-held suspicions and spy shots, General Motors has confirmed that its surging Buick marque will shortly receive a second crossover. Dubbed "Encore" (apparently GM is hoping consumers have short memories), the five-seat CUV will be revealed at next month's 2012 Detroit Auto Show and carry a 2013 model year designation.

This is the first photo of a promised strip tease(r) series, clearly showing a characterful headlight and a vertical element grille similar to that of the Encore's big brother, the popular Enclave three-row. We like what we see here, particularly the horizontal slat vent snugged into the headlamp assembly, even if the whole thing looks markedly less aggressive than Buick's Envision crossover concept from April's Shanghai Motor Show.

GM isn't saying much about the vehicle at this point, other than to note that the Encore will bring "contemporary styling, signature QuietTuning technology, and a host of features and amenities customers expect from Buicks today." Fair enough.

Buick promises that a new tab will go live on its Facebook page this week showing a covered photo of the Encore so that you can make out its silhouette, and each week between now and its January 10 reveal, the automaker will digitally reveal a bit more of its new baby.
Continue reading Buick names new small CUV Encore, promises Detroit debut

Buick names new small CUV Encore, promises Detroit debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Dec 2011 17:01:00 EST. The engine features direct-injection, a twin-scroll turbo huffing 20 psi of boost, an air-to-air intercooler and variable valve timing, along with a forged-steel crankshaft and a two-stage variable displacement oil pump.
Cadillac claims the new 2.0-liter is 16 percent more efficient than the previous generation four-pot, and is able to deliver its peak 260 pound-feet of torque from 1,500 to 5,800 RPM.

Two other engines will be offered in the 2013 Cadillac ATS when it goes on sale next year, including a normally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder and GM's tried-and-true 3.6-liter V6.
Between our official sneak peek and the endless leaks, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL is officially out of the bag before its debut at next month's Detroit Auto Show. And like its predecessors over the last five decades, the new SL continues to offer S-Class luxury and innovations in a svelte, drop-top package.

While the styling might not be a radical departure from the R230 chassis that's been around since 2003, the new front fascia takes the SLS' upright nose - an element that's infecting the rest of the Mercedes line-up - and joins it with a more raked hood and bi-xenon headlamps with fiber optic accents and daytime running LEDs mounted low in the bumper. When we got a preview of the SL last month, we were smitten by the aggressive new front end, but the profile and rear view left us comfortably numb.

The interior, on the other hand, is a masterwork, with more SLS-inspired elements carrying over inside, including the crosshair vents, a beautiful combination of leather, wood and carbon fiber, and a center console that blends simplicity and elegance, topping it off with a squat transmission stalk. The "Mercedes-Benz" text engraved in aluminum on the bottom of the flat-bottom steering wheel is a particularly nice touch, but the silver gauges come across as more Dodge circa 2005 than 21st-century Benz.

The roof can be had with either standard glass or the Magic Sky Control available on the SLK. Mercedes claims it stows away in 20 seconds and is more cleanly integrated than the R230, along with weighing 13 pound less thanks to its partial magnesium construction.

As we detailed before, the new SL will be around 300 pounds lighter than the outgoing version, living up to its Sports Light moniker by coming in under 4,000 pounds. That might not be a huge reduction, but it's the first of many steps Mercedes plans to implement in the coming years.

At launch, the SL550 will come equipped with the twin-turbocharged and direct-injected 4.6-liter V8, outputting 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque - a significant boost over the old model's 384 hp and 391 lb-ft. The dash to 60 is claimed to come in around 4.5 seconds, with fuel economy improved by up to 10 percent thanks to a modified seven-speed automatic gearbox and start/stop tech.

Speed-sensitive, electromechanical steering joins two suspension options: the standard Agility Control Suspension or the Active Body Control setup that debuted on the outgoing model.

Finally, two new technologies come standard on the SL, the previously featured Magic Vision Control which integrates the spray nozzles into the wipers, and the new FrontBass system that mounts two subwoofers in the driver and passenger footwells. And naturally, all the safety gadgetry is included, ranging from Pre-Safe to Adaptive Brakes. Get the full details in the press release below the fold and look for the all-new SL to hit dealers this spring.
Continue reading Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Dec 2011 13:27:00 EST.
