For the second and final leg of our drive with the Bullitt, we took back roads up from Monterey to San Francisco with some great twisties that really put the new suspension to the test. Read on after the jump for more from Day 2 or click here to read about our adventure on Day 1...

Right now as we speak, Ford is showing the 2008 Bullitt Mustang to a select group of automotive journalists in Dearborn, Autoblog included. The official info we take from this event is embargoed for a couple of days, at least until after Ford lets another group of select journalists, again Autoblog included, drive the Bullitt on the streets of downtown San Francisco (how appropriate). But until our First Drive of the 2008 Bullitt Mustang is published later in the week, we can show you this spy shot taken by a reader of MustangBlog.com in northern California. Last December we were invited to Detroit to view Ford's "Showroom of the Future" and were shown a dozen cars and trucks stretching out all the way to 2012. Nothing in Ford's pipeline we saw that day excited us more than seeing the upcoming Ford Mustang Bullitt in person. That was ten months ago, and since no cameras were allowed in the room, all we have is a hazy memory of a gorgeous green Mustang.

The car you see here (click the Read link for more pics) is likely the production version of the Bullitt Mustang we saw back then. A StangNet community member snapped these pics recently, and they suggest that the Bullitt will do away with any superfluous accoutrement like spoilers, louvers and hood scoops. Instead, it will be simple and plain, but more powerful than a standard Mustang GT.

Unfortunately, this little peek is all we get, so we can't comment on specifics except to refer you to a previous post on the Bullitt's leaked specs. The Mustang GT's 4.6L V8 should be producing 312 HP in the Bullitt thanks to a Ford Racing Performance Parts Power Pack, and suspension and brake upgrades are expected, as well.

We hope we'll meet the Mustang Bullitt again in person come January at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, but until then we expect everyone in Motown to lift up any car covers you see.

You may remember last summer when we brought you news from Stangs Unleashed about 2008.5 Mustang Bullitt rumors. Well Stangs Unleashed says Ford has a date set for the Bullitt's unveiling (though won't tell us when). The site also divulges more detailed information about the car as well as a spy photo of the supposed Bullitt's 4.6L, DOHC 400HP engine. According to Stangs Unleashed's sources, the aluminum blocked motor will feature Ford GT-type cylinder heads and valve covers, and special exhaust and intake manifolds.

The site goes on to provide further details of the car that seem to indicate the Bullitt will be set up more for road racing than drag racing, which should make Steve McQueen happy. One more rumor Stangs Unleashed throws out concerns Carroll Shelby. Could Ford be planning to ship semi-finished Bullitts to Shelby for further road-racing mods? Stangs Unleashed stops short of saying definitely, but hints heavily at the possibility. The site is also careful to point out any of these details could change before an actual product (Bullitt or otherwise) is released.
