Forgive us for having the distinct feeling of <em>d&eacute;j&agrave; vu</em>, but it certainly feels like we've been here before. By that we are referring <em>Car and Driver </em>and the announcement of its annual 10Best vehicles for 2013. To be sure, it's an impressive selection of cars that combine heart-pounding performance and frugal sensibilities, but it also represents something of a broken record on the part of C/D. We're not so sure that's a flaw, though, as the resulting list is tough to argue with.<br />
<br />
Vehicles like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang/">Ford Mustang</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/boxster/">Porsche Boxster</a>, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/3+series/">BMW 3 Series</a> have maintained their high-horsepower spots on this list for several years now. Even on the more practical and nimble end, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/accord/">Honda Accord</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/fit/">Honda Fit</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mazda/miata/">Mazda Miata</a> have not budged. These continued spots are even in light of redesigns for some vehicles such as the Accord, Boxster and 3 Series.<br />
<br />
In fact, the only newcomer to the 10Best list this year are the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/scion/fr-s/">Scion FR-S</a>/<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/subaru/brz/">Subaru BRZ</a> twins, which knocked out the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/cadillac/cts-v/">Cadillac CTS-V</a>. We think it would have been a huge misstep to have excluded the FR-S/BRZ, even in light of the supercharged Caddy's lamentable departure from 10Best.<br />

Dave Pericak, chief engineer behind the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a>, recently stopped by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/jay lenos garage">Jay Leno's Garage</a> to give the TV personality a personal tour of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang+boss+302/">2013 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca</a>. It's no secret that Leno has a soft spot for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> products. He owns a boatload of high-performance Blue Oval machines, including a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/gt">Ford GT</a> and a wicked <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B77ufAzVRWw">Shogun</a>. So, what does he think of the new Boss? Leno seems impressed with the machine, especially when it comes to the balance of horsepower and overall performance, calling the Boss 302 Laguna Seca the most sports car of all the Mustang variants.<br />
<br />
Leno even goes so far as to say he'd rather have this machine over the 662-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">Shelby GT500</a>. Having driven both, we're inclined to agree with the comic. Once upon a not so long ago, I owned a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lincoln">1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III</a>. If the cruiser from the B52's infamous "Love Shack" really was as big as a whale, the Conti was the ocean in which that mighty <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chrysler">Chrysler</a> swam. I held the title for roughly 13 years, and in that time, I got the car sideways exactly <em>once</em>.<br />
<br />
Now, I was certainly no newcomer to ass-out antics when this scenario played out, but I found myself woefully under-prepared for the combination of feather-light steering, neglected bushings, flimsy sidewalls and the sinister abundance of mass that I unleashed on that unsuspecting intersection one spring night.<br />
<br />
Traffic cleared, the secondaries on the Holley 750 double pumper opened up and all 500 lb-ft of torque from the 460 under the hood spilt the rear tires' guts onto the asphalt in a smoky sacrifice to glory. Momentum piled on as I struggled to swing the tiller from starboard to port and keep the craft out of either ditch. Even amidst the curses and 7,000 turns to lock, I was vaguely aware of the four girls in the back seat impersonating a Newton's Cradle as they slid across the green leather rear bench with each wag of the tail lamps.<br />

There are two draws in the pony-car competition bracket: brawn-<em>&uuml;ber-alles</em> pits the 580-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a> against the 650-hp <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a>, while the track-day killers set the 426-hp <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/camaro+1le/">Camaro 1LE</a> against the 444-hp <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang+boss+302/">Mustang Boss 302</a>. And all of them are eventually tested in anger at Virginia International Raceway, which could one day become our own N&uuml;rburgring based on the cars that have set times there.<br />
<br />
Answering that challenge, the Camaro 1LE has just come from posting a 2:58.34 around VIR. According to <a href="http://www.fastestlaps.com/tracks/virginia_international_raceway.html">the list at FastestLaps.com</a>, that puts the Camaro 1LE exactly midway between the 2005 lap time of a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/corvette">Chevrolet Corvette</a> Z06 at 2:58.20 and the 550-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/05/18/video-2011-ford-gt500-spanks-last-years-model-by-nine-seconds/">2011 GT500 which did 2:58.48</a>. For better comparison, the 1LE is 6.1 seconds <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/02/27/sibling-rivalry-chevrolet-takes-corvette-zr1-and-camaro-zl1-to/">behind the Camaro ZL1</a>, 4.46 seconds ahead of the Boss 302 Laguna Seca, and within two seconds of serious handlers like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/porsche+911+turbo+s">Porsche 911 Turbo S</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ariel+atom">Ariel Atom</a> 3 and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/sls+amg">Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG</a>, all run in the last two years (although we don't know who the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche">Porsche</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz">Mercedes</a> drivers were). FastestLaps lists a time of 2:58.00 for a "659-hp" GT500, but the year tested is "0" and we aren't sure what the story is there.<br />
<br />
Not a bad day's work for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/07/29/2013-chevrolet-camaro-zl1-convertible-priced-from-60-445-camar/">the $37,035 Camaro</a>, which starts at a price nearly $13,000 less than the Boss 302 Laguna Seca. Those include a new battle mode that allows you to pit your design against those of your friends to see which is more popular, as well as Facebook badges and new statistics. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/general motors">General Motors</a> struck back at the mighty <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> with the similarly brawny <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">Camaro ZL1</a>, and now it looks like GM has taken aim at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang+boss+302/">Mustang Boss 302</a> as well.<br />
<br />
According to posts on the Camaro5.com forums, a dealer reference guide has revealed buyers will be able to opt for a new performance track package for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">2013 Camaro</a>. The 1LE pack includes a number of aerodynamic tweaks, including an aggressive front splitter and unique rear spoiler, both painted in smoke gray. Red Brembo brake calipers, a hood wrapped in matte black vinyl and 20-inch wheels shod in Goodyear Eagle Supercar tires are all part of the party. Those big rollers are actually borrowed from the ZL1.<br />
<br />
Larger sway bars front and rear as well as stronger axle half shafts help the vehicle withstand track abuse. A Tremec six-speed manual gearbox with a higher 3.91 final drive and a liquid cooling system is also standard. Finally, the report says the Camaro 1LE will feature an optional dual-mode exhaust similar to what's found on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/corvette">Chevrolet Corvette</a>.<br />
<br />
Will the hardware be enough to help the Camaro fend off the road-race ready Boss 302? Given the sublime driving experience the tweaked Mustang offers its buyers and the heady 444 horsepower on hand, it seems unlikely. That doesn't mean we'd be averse to putting the two head to head on a track, however.<br />
<br />
<strong>UPDATE</strong><strong>:</strong> General Motors has now released official information on the 1LE. The model will land at under $40,000 and and be able to pull up to 1g on the skid pad. According to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/al oppenheiser">Al Oppenheiser</a>, Camaro Chief Engineer, the vehicle was able to best the three-minute lap time at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/virginia international raceway">Virginia International Raceway</a>, and GM is currently seeking approval from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/virginia international raceway">SCCA</a> to allow the package to be used in the Touring Class competition.<br />
<br />
In addition to borrowing the dual-mode exhaust from the ZL1, the 1LE will also feature the same variable-effort power steering. Other changes include a strut tower brace, ZL1 wheel bearings, toe links and shock mounts as well as a ZL1 high-capacity fuel pump and pickups for consistent fuel delivery during hard cornering. In order to pull off an actual test with any merit, the publication would need to wrangle some of the most impressive pieces of automotive engineering together on the same track on the same day. When we're talking about vehicles like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/lfa">Lexus LFA</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/sls amg">Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lotus/evora">Lotus Evora</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ferrari/458 italia">Ferrari 458 Italia</a> and the like, that can be a daunting feat, even for a rag of MT's swagger.<br />

The world would be considerably less entertaining if we could all predict the future. Even so, the classic car gurus at Hagerty Insurance have cast a few chicken bones in an attempt to figure out which vehicles produced today might eventually turn collectible.<br />
<br />
The company restricted entrants to hardware with a price tag of less than $100,000, so the list isn't populated with too many wild exotics. While vehicles like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/nissan/gtr">Nissan GT-R Black Edition</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca Edition</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/911">Porsche 911</a> are low-hanging fruit, the list also featured a few surprises.<br />
<br />
For starters, it begins with none other than the mighty <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/buick/regal">Buick Regal GS</a>. Hagerty says the vehicle is a win because it's the first Buick with a manual transmission since the fall of the Holy Roman Empire. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/fiat/500">Fiat 500 Abarth</a> also makes an appearance alongside an even hotter hatch, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/golf">Volkswagen Golf R</a>. It's that time of year, folks. No, we're not referring to the oodles of time spent shopping for the holidays, we're talking about end-of-the-year lists. Kicking things off in the automotive spectrum is industry stalwart <em>Ward's Auto</em>, which has just released its annual 10 Best Engines list.<br />
<br />
Without further ado, here are the award-winners for 2012:<br />

		3.0L TFSI Supercharged DOHC V-6 (<a href="http://autoblog.com/audi/a6">Audi A6</a>)</li>
	<li>
		2.0L N20 Turbocharged DOHC I-4 (<a href="http://autoblog.com/bmw/z4">BMW Z4</a>/<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/5+series/">528i</a>)</li>
	<li>
		3.0L N55 Turbocharged DOHC I-6 (<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/3+series/">BMW 335i Coupe</a>)</li>
	<li>
		3.6L Pentastar DOHC V-6 (<a href="http://autoblog.com/chrysler/300">Chrysler 300</a>/<a href="http://autoblog.com/jeep/wrangler">Jeep Wrangler</a>)</li>
	<li>
		2.0L EcoBoost DOHC I-4 (<a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/edge">Ford Edge</a>)</li>

It comes as little surprise that seven of the ten engines on the list feature the most recent advance in power and efficiency, namely direct injection, or that a full half of them are boosted with the addition of either a supercharger or a turbocharger. Perhaps more surprising is that there's only one hybrid powertrain on the list, and it's from <a href="http://autoblog.com/infiniti">Infiniti</a>, not <a href="http://autoblog.com/toyota">Toyota</a> or <a href="http://autoblog.com/lexus">Lexus</a>.<br />
<br />
In fact, there isn't a single engine from <a href="http://autoblog.com/honda">Honda</a> or Toyota on 2011's edition of the 10 Best Engines, nor are the 1.4-liter/111kW electric motor package in the <a href="http://autoblog.com/chevrolet/volt">Chevrolet Volt</a> or 80kW AC motor in the <a href="http://autoblog.com/nissan/leaf">Nissan Leaf</a> anywhere to be found - both of which were on the list in 2010. Also missing? A diesel... any diesel - and there certainly are a few options from the likes of <a href="http://autoblog.com/audi">Audi</a>, <a href="http://autoblog.com/bmw">BMW</a>, <a href="http://autoblog.com/mercedes-benz">Mercedes-Benz</a> and <a href="http://autoblog.com/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> from which to choose.<br />
<br />
Though its neither direct-injected nor turbocharged, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/pentastar">Pentastar V6</a> from <a href="http://autoblog.com/chrysler">Chrysler</a> is surely worthy of inclusion, if for no other reason than its single-handed ability to transform any vehicle it's in from an also-ran to a competitive proposition.<br />

If that's the case, we've got good news. Ford's latest performance pony gets two new colors for the 2013 model year, and while we saw the rather self-explanatory <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/17/2013-ford-mustang-boss-302-la-2011/">School Bus Yellow</a> at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/la%20auto%20show">2011 LA Auto Show</a>, Gotta Have It Green has yet to make an official appearance.<br />

The 2011 model year brought big powertrain upgrades for the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a> - that's when the 5.0-liter V8 and 3.7-liter V6 were introduced - and for 2013, Ford's Pony Car is getting some updated style, tech and packaging to make it a more competitive offering in the segment.<br />
<br />
Up front, all Mustangs get a new front fascia with revised lower air intakes and a new splitter. High-intensity discharge headlamps are also now standard across the board, and GT models get a new hood with functional air extractors, as well as optional HID foglamps. New body-colored rocker panels flank both sides, and new 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels are also available. Around back, there's now a high-gloss black panel that connects the slightly redesigned taillamps, and the side mirrors have a pretty cool gee-whiz feature: there are LED lamps in them that project Ford's legendary pony logo onto the ground when the doors are unlocked. New colors including Gotta Have It Green and Deep Impact Blue are also available.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2013-ford-mustang-boss-302/"><img  src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2011/11/13mustangboss30203hr-opt.jpg" style="margin: 4px; width: 305px; height: 171px; float: right;" /></a>Other changes to the 2013 Mustang include a Recaro seat option for both V6 and GT models, an available SelectShift function on automatic-equipped V8 cars, a GT Track Pack with a Torsen differential from the Boss 302 and Brembo brakes (only available on cars with the 3.73 axle and a manual transmission) and the availability of the V6 Performance Pack on automatic-equipped cars. There's also a Track Apps function inside the instrument cluster that shows a whole host of performance stats. Speaking of performance, the 5.0-liter V8 now makes 420 horsepower for 2013, up from 402 and still six shy of the current <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro/">Chevrolet Camaro</a>.<br />

The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang+boss+302/">Mustang Boss 302</a> (above, right) may have just been introduced for the 2012 model year, but it also receives some small tweaks for the new model year. Specifically, a new hockey stick graphic with reflective stripes has been added to the sides of the Boss, paying homage to the 1970 Boss 302. Both the standard and Laguna Seca models are now available in School Bus Yellow, and the updated front fascia from the base Mustangs has been fitted to the 444-horsepower Boss, as well. The foglamp covers in the grille are now removable for 2013, and Ford says this will improve cooling during longer stints of high-performance driving.<br />

The premise is pretty straight-forward, with Bell taking to the wheel of some piece of drool-worthy metal in the first half of the show before heading off to an event in the latter half. The inaugural episode features a stint in the delicious <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford mustang boss 302">Ford Mustang Boss 302</a> on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/mulholland%20drive/">Mulholland Drive</a> as well as a stop in at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/pebble beach">Pebble Beach</a> for a peak at the concept lawn.<br />

Bell spends some time with a variety of concepts before deciding that the electrified <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/porsche 918 rsr">Porsche 918 RSR</a> is the belle of that particular ball. Race fans will likely recognize Bell as the same champion race driver who has campaigned at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/24 hours of le mans">24 Hours of Le Mans</a> and the FIA GT series. Last year Ford made the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/08/16/new-ford-5-0l-and-supercharged-5-4l-v8s-now-available-as-crate-e/">Mustang's 5.0L V8 available as a crate engine</a>. Shortly thereafter, many of them found homes in some well-deserving cars. Now, Ford Racing is offering the Boss 302's 5.0L V8 as a standalone purchase through its performance parts catalog, allowing anyone to put the 444 horsepower engine into their own project car.<br />
<br />
The difference between the Mustang's standard 5.0L V8 and the Boss 302 variant is more than just 32 horsepower. The Boss 302 features a new high-flowing intake manifold; CNC-machined cylinder heads; upgraded exhaust valves; forged pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft; a more aggressive camshaft and more. All of those upgrades cost a pretty penny, though. Ford Racing lists the Boss 302 V8 crate engine at $11,999.00, while the standard 5.0 will cost you just $6,999.00.<br />

Today at the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) show in Orlando, FL, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> Racing took the wraps off its latest <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> race car, the Boss 302S. Serving as a replacement for the now defunct FR500S race car that was used for the Mustang Challenge race series, the Boss 302S is intended for the serious track day enthusiast as well as racing series like the SCCA's World Challenge and NASA's American Iron.<br />
<br />
Fitting in between the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/08/13/ford-mustang-boss-302-is-back-for-2012/">Boss 302 Laguna Seca</a> and the Boss 302R race car that competes in Grand-Am, the Boss 302S will feature the stock transmission, clutch and flywheel mated to the Boss 302 5.0-liter engine putting out 440 horsepower. Race-spec items like a six-point roll cage and Recaro HANS Pro Racer seat will be standard, as well as a fully adjustable suspension system, Brembo race brake system, massive front splitter and an adjustable carbon fiber rear wing. Pricing is set at $79,000, identical to the FR500S, and just 50 will be available from the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog. Sure, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Jay%20Leno">Jay Leno</a> has some pretty varied taste when it comes to cars, but the apple of his eye is likely his '66 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a> Shelby GT350. He's owned the car for the better part of a quarter of a century, and it routinely comes up when he speaks about the essence of a good-driving car. It's fitting, then, that Leno was on hand for the debut of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/08/13/ford-mustang-boss-302-is-back-for-2012/">2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca Edition</a>. With 440 horsepower from a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8, track-oriented aerodynamics and a lively 3.73 rear axle ratio, this sucker is designed for some serious flogging.<br />

Leno managed to corner Tom Barnes, the vehicle engineering manager for Mustang, trackside for a quick rundown of what the new Boss and the Laguna Seca edition are all about during the latest episode of <em>Jay Leno's Garage</em>. <br />

Now, the really interesting part of this whole video is when Leno lets it slip that the Boss will feature a unique tech-laden key. Perhaps the biggest news to come out of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monterey+2010/">this year's Monterey action</a> is the revival of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/08/13/ford-mustang-boss-302-is-back-for-2012/">Mustang Boss 302</a> for 2012. It's a hardcore version of the already well-liked <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang GT</a> - the hot new 5.0-liter V8 has been given more power, and performance mods like an upgraded clutch, adjustable suspension, short-throw shifter and improved brakes are all on hand, as is an even more exclusive Laguna Seca model.<br />
