Scattering Ashes Jaguar

Wayne Burgess is the chap on the right wearing the Gibson shirt, in his guise as lead guitarist for the band Scattering Ashes. Before - and we're presuming after as well - his shifts on the six-strings he's also a Jaguar designer and was the lead on the 2012 XF.

And that's how Burgess and mates ended up taking Jag b-roll and cutting it for a vid to their song "Cut Me Down." It's a twist on the decade-old Jag ad campaign "Everyone dreams of becoming a rock star. What then do rock stars dream of?"

Kanye West and Jay Z Maybach

The memory of Jay Z and Kanye West laying waste to a $350,000 Maybach for the duo's "Otis" music video continues to bring a smile to our face. We're always fans of the Mad Max treatment on any vehicle, and taking a Sawzall and a cutting torch to a ludicrously expensive luxury barge remains the stuff of our twisted fantasies. If you've been wondering what ever happened to the zombie Maybach, wonder no more. What's left of the 'Bach is officially headed to auction, with the proceeds going to Save The Children, a non-profit charity dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world. In this case, the auction will benefit families in East Africa.

How much will the cannibalized Maybach fetch once the gavel falls? Early estimates say bids could reach as high as $100,000, or less than a third of the vehicle's total value pre-Otisification. Worth it? Well, we certainly won't tell you how to spend your cash, but if you're a fan of hip hop royalty and/or Save The Children, we're inclined to think so. Chevrolet alluded to it in its "Stunt Anthem" Super Bowl commercial for the Sonic, and during this weekend's Super Bowl, the genuine article appeared. As promised, the Sonic tests out its musical chops by playing OK Go's "Needing/Getting."

Two miles of instruments were laid out in the Southern California desert, lots of practice and planning to get it just right. Of course, that was after four months of preparation, during which time OK Go's lead singer had to learn how to stunt drive.

The Chevrolet Sonic has been busy lately - taking part in a host of adventurous activities like sky diving, bungee jumping, kickflipping, and making a music video. We've seen snippets of a lot of the extreme sports activities the Sonic hatch has been involved in, but we have yet to see the music video for OK Go and its song "Needing/Getting." Chevy has just released a teaser to whet our appetites, however, as well as its latest full-length Sonic ad for the Super Bowl, both of which you can view after the jump.

The 60-second extreme sports spot is part of an onslaught of seven ads that Chevrolet will run before and during the game, and at least four of the brand's ads will be devoted to the Sonic. Abby Cubey video

We've seen some painful product placement efforts revolving around cars over the past few years. Some of them involve movies or television shows, but more than a fair share come down to music videos. Yet none, absolutely none, can compare with the bizarre spectacle of Abby Cubey behind the wheel of the Mosler RaptorGTR.

For those not yet acquainted, the music video (available after the jump) features a performing artist unknown until now singing some extremely cheesy lyrics in, on and around the Florida-built supercar, accompanied by some very strange sideshow acts. It hardly does the performers any favors, and certainly doesn't help the exotic sports car along any either. But just how did this collaboration come into being?

The story is a little stranger than you might have thought. This wasn't, according to an investigative report undertaken by our friends at Jalopnik, just some American Idol reject getting ahold of a hot car in an attempt to jump-start her career. It actually runs a lot deeper than that, delving deep into a struggle over the business itself responsible for creating the car.

It all seems to revolve around one Todd Wagner, an engineer who, while at Mosler, helped create the RaptorGTR. Wagner has long since been ejected from the company, which is now being controlled by his ex-wife Jill. Todd says he has a distributorship agreement with Mosler in place - a claim that the company flatly denies - and that he created the video in order to promote the vehicle.

Reports also indicate that the terms of Mosler's sale specifically preclude Todd Wagner - who is quickly emerging as severely delusional - from having any involvement. Jill Wagner, meanwhile, speculates that her ex-husband is romantically involved with Cubey, and that the video is part of some misguided effort to promote her career as well as the business that is apparently not his to promote in the first place.

So is it working? Well, with some 40,000 YouTube hits in less than a week, we're reminded of the truism that there's no such thing as bad publicity. But after watching the video ourselves, we're beginning to doubt that very much. Follow the jump for the original video.

The 2012 Mosler RaptorGTR is one serious supercar. It boasts 838 horsepower and weighs just 2,580 pounds. How does an exotic racer manage to weigh so little when it's packing a twin-turbo, 7.0-liter engine? Extensive use of carbon fiber is the key, and the payoff is a 0-60 time of only 2.6 seconds. If that's not quick enough for you, for another $70,000, the RaptorGTR can be upgraded to produce a neck-snapping 1,212 horsepower.

Those are some serious stats, but it gets bizarre from here. The RaptorGTR is featured in a new music video with an artist called Abby Cubey, and we're pretty sure it was shot in an alternative universe. It starts off with some very much appreciated beauty shots and a terrific exhaust soundtrack, then Abby starts singing about various automobile/sexual double-entendres - while people breakdance and sing in front of a wall of fire. Then it gets weird. No, this isn't Jersey Shore, but now we think we know what The Situation will be driving next. Hit the jump to check out the head-scratching video.

Whether or not you're a fan of pop music and hip-hop, car nuts sit up and take notice when their music videos feature some hot rides. We've seen everything from Kanye chopping up a Maybach to Danica driving Italian exotics in Monte Carlo. (Come to think of it, both those two are Jay-Z videos.) Now British pop star Pixie Lott and American rapper Pusha T have brought out a different kind of ride for their latest music video.

Part of an ongoing (and rather noticeable) product-placement campaign partnership between Pixie Lott and Citroën, the new single What Do You Take Me For? opens and closes with the DS3 Racing - the French automaker's anything-but-subtle 207-horsepower hot hatch. The track will feature on Pixie's upcoming album Young Foolish Happy, but the video's out now, and whether it's your kinda tune or not, you can check it out after the jump together with the press release. Just be warned, all of you working in puritanical office environments: there be booty shaking here.

Kanye and Jay-Z set up on a Maybach

If you've got money and taste, you might choose a new Bentley or Rolls-Royce. But if you've only got the former, you might be more inclined to go with a Maybach. In fact, as often as Phantoms show up in hip-hop videos, we're pretty sure the only people buying Maybachs are Daimler executives and rap stars.

Case in point, the latest music video from Jay-Z and Kanye West. With plenty of Benjamins between them to burn, the hip-hop mega stars take a new Maybach limousine and shred it up all Mad Max style in the video for "Otis," the single off their latest collaboration Watch the Throne. Now here's a quandary; What do inane pop beats and the Steve McQueen classic Bullitt have in common? If you answered less than the Cub Scouts and the Hells Angels, congratulations, we owe you a beer. Why do we ask? Our friends at The J managed to stumble across the music video for Sharam's "Fun." The twisted little piece of cinema has managed to shove all the patience-grating repetition that a disposable pop song can muster into a meticulous recreation of the Dodge Charger vs. Ford Mustang battle from Bullitt.

It's the emotional equivalent of a brake stand. Our eyes are begging to see more while our ears are doing their best to cut themselves from the sides of our skull. We don't suggest trying to wrap your mind around exactly what's going on here. Instead, mute the volume and enjoy one of the more accurate recreations of the Bullitt chase in music video history after the jump.

If you can't stand to sit there in the quiet, there's always the magic of YouTube doubler. It goes without saying that you'll need to mute "Fun."

We've got to wonder what it is about crappy cars that inspire acts of musical tribute. It seems like every time we turn around, the internets are serving up another heaping helping of clever lyrics and catchy beats to commemorate some heap that most people would just as soon forget. It wasn't until just recently that we were able to pry the snappy licks of the V-O-L-V-O music video from our gray matter. Now it seems that the mechanical muse has struck in the form of a faux-wood paneled Chevrolet Celebrity wagon.

While the video after the jump lacks the wit of the Volvo 240 wagon ode, it makes up for its shortcomings with some of the staples of the music video arsenal - a bit of exposed female anatomy and ranting about "The Man." An entire concept album born from a 23-year-old song imagining Juan Manuel Fangio piloting a Saab SPG through the Andes on a mission to assassinate former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet? The plot sounds like some mythical collaboration between Terry Gilliam and Sergio Leone. In fact, the artist behind it all is Peter Peter Hughes, whom you may know from his work as a member of The Mountain Goats.

The first two songs off Hughes' new solo project, Fangio, will be released on August 10, both digitally and on vinyl (the 7" will be available via Fayettenam Records). The complete LP follows on September 7 (vinyl again available via Fayettenam -- and dig that album artwork). Preceding all that, however, is the music video for the track, "My God is an Angry God." Directed by our great friend (and Jalopnik O.G.) Davey G. Johnson, the video - shot in true guerilla style using locales in upstate New York including the old Watkins Glen GP circuit - stars Hughes as Fangio and Hughes' personal Saab SPG as itself.

Rapper Grynch isn't about Maybachs and Phantoms - he's straight up all about a 1986 Volvo 240 DL... wagon. So much so, in fact, he's penned a song and made a video for it. One never knows what to expect when told to check out a rap video about a Volvo, but we found it a lot cooler than we think we had a right to. If your Jeep Cherokee has been sitting around for a while, it probably makes a few noises. You might not mind, though, if they were noises as well orchestrated as those in the video shown above.

British saxophonist Julian Smith spent a few hours with a Cherokee and an array of friends with rhythm and came up with a number that could be straight out of Stomp. Or an Art of Noise album. Self-assembling Suzuki GSX-R - Click above to watch the video after the break

Fancy yourself mechanically inclined? Ever want to try your hand at building your own motorcycle? While some of us have rebuilt our fair share of cars over the years, we've never gone and tried the ground-up thing ourselves on a two-wheeled machine, and after watching the video embedded after the break, we think we'd rather be out riding.

A heck of a lot of work obviously went into producing this clip, which we're told was completed by a father and son team (that'd be Noah and Noah's Dad, we presume) in about 30 hours. Using a bunch of creativity and the tried-and-true stop/motion technique, the two were able to make it appear as if the Suzuki GSX-R assembles itself. Not only is it nice work, we particularly appreciate the soundtrack nod to Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer music video, itself another stop/motion classic.

On Wednesday night, as part of the run-up to the LA Auto Show, Jaguar held a sizable soiree at SoCal's Milk Studios to show off its latest wares to the public and press, with a heavy focus on its 2011 XJ flagship.

With the British automaker's latest model taking center stage, Mike O'Driscoll, Jaguar's managing director, discussed the finer points of the super saloon before announcing that rapper Jay Z will feature the XJ in his upcoming music video, "On to the Next One," a track from his new album The Blueprint 3. The 60-second trailer we saw didn't set our hearts on fire, but with Jaguar's renewed focus on "making Jaguar Jaguar again" and its push to appeal to a broader swath of the world's elite, the collaboration - although slightly awkward and mildly forced - could pay itself forward. It's just a shame about Jay Z's new logo being painted on the flanks of the luxury sedan.

The music video has evolved from a low budget way to promote record sales to multi-million dollar budget busters with stunt doubles and special effects. A band called MUTEMATH is out to change all that, as the alternative rock band shot one of its latest video in a Ford Econoline. We're not talking about a set that's made to look like a cargo van; MUTEMATH actually shot their music video in the back of a moving van. The entire video reportedly only took 12 minutes to shoot, and that time includes removing the Econoline's heavy seats and adding two guitars, a drum set and four band members. About half way through the 3:31 video, the band even removes all the equipment and adds a decent-sized piano. If you're a fan of the movie Twilight, you may recognize the song, as it's on the Vampire flick's soundtrack.

Hit the jump to view the video for yourself, if only to see how much action can take place in an otherwise empty Ford Econoline. As an added bonus, we kind of like the music, as well.

The music video for the updated Speed Racer theme, "Go Speed Racer Go", has hit the web, and while the song itself gets annoying after a couple of verses (how many times can you listen to that refrain before going insane?), the actual video is mesmerizing. There's a lot of footage that hasn't been seen in the trailers and ads so far, and the cartoon come-to-life visuals are simply eye-popping. In that respect, anyone who ponies up ten bucks for a ticket is going to get his or her money's worth. Hopefully, the strength of the story can match the undeniable visual power the Wachowski's onscreen kaleidoscope is set to deliver. At least one early review indicates that may not be the case, unfortunately. We'll wait 'till we see it ourselves next weekend to pass final judgement. In the meantime, feast your eyes on the new video after the jump.

Check out this music video for Lacquer's Behind. Maybe some of you will scoff at it being featured here on Autoblog, but it speaks to motorists, adventurers and travelers who like voyages on America's highways and byways. It starts with an old convertible parked at the Pacific Ocean, and turns into a journey across our continent. Coast to coast the driver covers the whole of the USA in under four minutes with the use of some snappy time-lapse photography, as directed by filmmaking brothers Michel (Be Kind Rewind, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and Olivier Gondry. Beautiful scenery and gorgeous skylines abound, as well as some good music. Thanks for the tip Mark!

You can't really blame Pontiac for giving its rear-wheel-drive G8 Concept and G6 GXP to rapper 50 Cent to use in his video for the song "Amusement Park". After all, pick a premium nameplate like Bentley, Rolls Royce, Lamborghini or Ferrari and one could find at least half a dozen (or more) music videos in which each marque has been featured prominently. At the same time, we must remember these are Pontiacs, and so we're asked to suspend disbelief and accept that given the choice, Fifty and his entourage would roll in one of these two vehicles before a Bentley Continental GTC, Rolls Royce Phantom, Lamborghini Gallardo or Ferrari Enzo.

Note: If you're not into rap and want to get to the goods, fast forward to 2:00 in and you'll have your prize, though the Pontiacs only get 4 seconds of screen time.
