The year 1963 was a pretty good one for things on wheels - Lamborghini was born that year, as was the Porsche 911, and we'll give a shout out to the all-American Apollo GT even though it only lasted four years. This summer, Petersen Automotive Museum is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Baja 500 and Baja 1,000 desert races with an exhibit called Braving Baja: 1,000 Miles to Glory.

Truth be told, the 50th anniversary of the peninsula race was last year - it was in 1962 that Dave Ekins and Billy Robertson, Jr. did a 950-mile timed run from Tijuana to La Paz to prove the grit of Honda's new CL72 Scrambler motorcycle. That single time trial has turned into the trophy truck, buggy, Volkswagen Beetle and motorcycle spectacle that we know today. 1962 was also the anniversary of Shelby American and the dearly departed Iso, so it still wasn't a bad year for things on wheels.

The event kicks off with a tribute dinner on May 2 featuring Elkins and Parnelli Jones - another legendary off-road racer - in attendance taking audience questions. Two days later will be a one-day off-road show in which anyone can participate who has a museum ticket and a vehicle that can handle the dirt.

The exhibit itself runs through September 2nd and will feature all manner of Baja paraphernalia including numerous bikes and buggies that have run the route, like a 1964 Myers Manx, a 1960 Bilstein VW Baja Bug driven by Doug Robinson and the 2003 Honda XR650R ridden by Mouse McCoy as seen in the Baja documentary Dust to Glory. If you're interested, there's a press release below with info on all the events.
Continue reading The Petersen celebrates 50th anniversary of the Baja 500 and 1,000

The Petersen celebrates 50th anniversary of the Baja 500 and 1,000 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 26 Apr 2013 08:00:00 EST.
It was modern art and motorcars on display in the Car Culture exhibit at the LENTOS Kunstmuseum in Linz, Austria. We say "was" because we missed the exhibit, which was last year, but we've been tipped to a video of some of its offerings, and we wish we had gone.

The image above is two Porsche Cayennes in wood in the midst of a head-on collision - and it gets far more modern artsy from there, such as with the Volkswagen Beetle with the upside down tortoise shell glued to its roof. The exhibit also showed off the pedal-powered aluminum foil Porsche 911 and the similarly powered Fahrradi Farfalla FXX. There are videos below of selections from the piece and the world premiere of the Farhrradi, enjoy.
Continue reading Car Culture exhibit at Lentos museum will bend your mind [w/videos]

Car Culture exhibit at Lentos museum will bend your mind [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Apr 2013 08:43:00 EST.
After 13 years of operation, the Walter P. Chrysler Museum on the Chrysler campus in Auburn Hills is closing its doors today for good. Waning attendance meant the 55,000-square-foot museum couldn't meet its own costs, seemingly leaving the facility's 67 vintage vehicles and slew of displays without a home. The museum had been curated by the Chrysler Museum Foundation, a public entity.

Fortunately, Chrysler itself has stepped in to save the vast majority of the cars and trucks housed in the collection, and the newest additions to the automaker's stable will be curated by the Chrysler Foundation, the automaker's charitable arm. While ancient iron like a 1902 Rambler and a 1917 Willys-Knight 88-8 Touring are certainly worthy of a long look, the museum also housed some impressive pieces of the automaker's technological history.

Those include a 30-cylinder tank engine designed and manufactured in World War II. The 25-liter behemoth was comprised of five inline sixes mashed together and generated a modest 450 horsepower. The collection also includes plenty of muscle cars and a few gems from defunct brands like DeSoto, Plymouth and AMC.

While it is ceasing normal public visiting hours, the museum apparently won't be shuttering completely - it will be used for Chrysler functions and potentially open to the public in limited fashion for special exhibits.
Walter P.
Two years ago we went to the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles to meet one of the original Black Beauty Chrysler Imperials from The Green Hornet television show. When the work was done, we were asked if we wanted a tour of the underground vault, to which we of course consented. We were instructed, however, "You can't mention this to anyone." And we didn't.

Now it's a secret that won't need to be kept if you're in LA from December 15 to January 6. The Petersen is opening its vault to the public for the holidays, offering guided tours of the roughly 250 cars in the stash to groups of 10 or fewer. You'll need an additional $25 ticket on top of the $12 museum ticket, but the metal in the photo above will immediately prove its worth. If you haven't seen the "Round Door" Rolls-Royce Phantom I Aerodynamic Coupe, that is worth the price of entry by itself.

Each tour will last for more than an hour, so you won't worry about being rushed. You won't be able to take photos, however, and those under 12 will not be allowed. The press release below will tell you how to get into the automotive safe, and the high-res pics above will help you figure out where you want you want to focus your eyeballs when you get there.
Continue reading Petersen Automotive Museum open its vault to public for first time

Petersen Automotive Museum open its vault to public for first time originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 15 Dec 2012 13:59:00 EST.
Automotive designer Sergio Pininfarina passed away in July of this year, but there is every reason to believe that the memory of the vehicles he created will never die. That prediction is bolstered by the fact that he designed more than 100 Ferraris, and that the Ferrari Museum has just put 22 of them on display in Maranello in The Great Ferraris of Sergio Pininfarina Exhibition.

Sergio didn't 'retire' from the chairmanship of the design house the wore the family name until 2006 (he took the role of honorary chairman after that, until his death this year), but he first put his pen to work for Ferrari with the 1952 Inter Cabriolet. Since then, right through to the F12 Berlinetta, Pininfarina was responsible for a heart-melting procession of cars, which kept the enthusiasts' attention on Maranello, and brought new definitions to words like "Italian," "scarlet," "racecar for the road" and "playboy."

The exhibit is open now and runs until January 7, 2013. The various samples of Sergio's work are broken up into race, road and concept cars and span the decades from the 250 LM to the 599 SA Aperta. A couple of videos and a press release below go into more detail, and no, it's not too early to ask Santa for a trip to Italy.
Continue reading Ferrari Museum opens exhibit celebrating works of Sergio Pininfarina [w/video]

Ferrari Museum opens exhibit celebrating works of Sergio Pininfarina [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Nov 2012 14:59:00 EST.
The pride and joy of Bowling Green, Kentucky, is about to get a lot bigger.

The National Corvette Museum is planning to build a motorsports park and has already hired Steve Crawford, the architect behind Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, California, and The Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington.

But the museum hasn't raised enough money to pay for the multimillion dollar facility, which it hopes to have running by 2014. It has $3 million cash for the land and another million for the facility. But it is currently seeking sponsors for the track, up to a $750,000 annual commitment to service the debt on a $10 million debt.

The park, complete with racetrack if all goes as planned, will serve a number of purposes including "education, recreation and training for Corvette enthusiasts," according to reporting website Corvetteblogger.com.
Corvette Museum hires architect for upcoming motorsports park, seeks sponsors originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Sep 2012 18:31:00 EST.
In the second part of its coverage of the LeMay Museum in Tacoma, Washington (part one is here), we get even more visual representation of why it bills itself as "America's Museum." There are few places where you can wander through a single collection and see the vintage Rolls-Royce pictured sharing floor space with a Ferrari 308 GTB, an original Mini, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and a Ducati.

With 3,500 cars of its own, plus 350 cars donated by private collectors and companies, it might lay claim to being the Smithsonian of American automobilia. There's a short video with more of the goodness below.
Continue reading eGarage looks into the man behind America's Car Museum

eGarage looks into the man behind America's Car Museum originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 Aug 2012 19:58:00 EST.
It's a bold step for an institution to brand itself as "America's Car Museum." As a nation obsessed with anything and everything automotive, our tastes are about as varied as they could possibly be. The curators behind the LeMay Museum in Tacoma, Washington seem to understand that, and have collected a rotating stable of machines that include everything from the mighty Ferrari F40 to over-the-top lowriders. Nearly every era and nation of automotive engineering shows its face in one form or another, resulting in a melting pot of cardom. Very cool.

The guys from eGarage recently stopped by to give the museum a once over, focusing their well-trained lenses on the rash of classic metal found inside. If you can't make it to the Pacific Northwest to see the LeMay Museum for yourself, this is probably the next best thing. Check out the quick video below to have a look.
Continue reading Amazing LeMay Museum gets the eGarage treatment

Amazing LeMay Museum gets the eGarage treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jul 2012 16:58:00 EST.
Part of the sideshow in the Saab revival circus has been the waning and waxing fate of the Saab Museum Trollhättan, Sweden. The U.S. Heritage Collection was sold to two U.S. collectors earlier this year, while the Swedish museum's collection was rescued from breakup by three Swedish interests: the city of Trollhättan, SAAB AB and The Wallenberg Foundation.

With stipulations that its cars can only be displayed at the museum or regionally on occasion, the new museum opened its doors this weekend with the full complement of so-called quirky autos. It's open just about every day this year save for a week in June and the Christmas holidays.

Meanwhile, over at the main event, a joint bid involving BAIC and Panasonic appears to have joined the melee, while we wait on the results of bids from Youngman and Mahindra. We can only hope the Saab car company shares in the same good fortune as the museum.
Saab Museum reopens in Sweden originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 24 Mar 2012 15:02:00 EST.
The Italian city of Modena stands as a veritable mecca for automobile enthusiasts. Not only does it serve as the home of both Maserati and Pagani, but it was also the birthplace of one Enzo Ferrari. While the automaker and racing team that carry his name are situated in nearby Maranello, where the company also operates its own museum, a new foundation has started up in Modena, dedicated to preserving the memory of the legendary industrialist and racer.

That organization is the Fondazione Casa Natale Enzo Ferrari, which has acquired the house where Ferrari was raised, turning it into a museum of its own. Although Enzo himself sold his childhood home to finance his aspirations, the foundation has recently reacquired it, transforming it and the adjacent garage where his father worked into a cultural center and expanding on the original buildings with a modern structure.

Designed by Czech architect Jan Kaplicky and carried to completion after his death by his protege Andrea Morgante, the yellow-roofed building - painted the color of the Ferrari logo and designed to evoke the hood on one of his iconic sportscars - incorporates an art exhibit, a multimedia experience, a rotating display of Ferrari road and race cars borrowed from independent collectors, and a collection of Enzo's own artifacts.

The grounds also house education and conference centers, a book shop, cafeteria and the offices of the foundation itself. If you're planning a pilgrimage to the area, it strikes us as an experience not to be missed. But if your travel plans don't extend to the Modena area, you can check out the gallery of high-resolution images we've compiled for your virtual tourism pleasure.
Modena welcomes new museum at birthplace of Enzo Ferrari originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 18:59:00 EST. Kamil Kaluski, a.k.a CarGuyDad, was cruising around Boulder, Colorado with his daughter when he spotted a sign emblazoned with "Auto Museum." Not expecting much, he was a surprised to find this particular museum was actually home to the Shelby American Collection.

Stepping into the nondescript building, Kaluski and his young traveling companion were greeted by the sight of Cobras, Mustangs, GT40s and a few other very special hunks of iron. Some of those "other" vehicles include a Falcon wagon used as a Shelby parts hauler/tow vehicle and a Ferrari raced by Carroll himself.

Head over to CarGuyDad for more information on his surprising Colorado find, as well as more photos of the vehicles housed at the Shelby American Collection.
If you're planning a trip to Germany, Stuttgart should be included in your itinerary. The city is home to both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, but if factory tours aren't enough to make it worth your while, Porsche recently inaugurated a new €100 million museum displaying a collection that includes 80 of the company's most historic creations on 1,000 square meters of floor space housed in a dazzling new building. We recently had a chance to check it out in person, and we'd highly recommend any gearhead worth his or her pistons to do the same. And when you do, you'll probably want to bring some extra cash, because as you'd expect, the gift shop is packed with desirable items, the latest of which Porsche has just revealed.

The new collection at the Porsche Museum shop includes sportswear - including the 356 Workshop Shirt for men and the retro "I too prefer Porsche" tee for the ladies - as well as books and DVDs outlining the company's history along with the usual suspects from metal signs and posters to keychains and exclusive 1:18 scale models. You can check 'em all out in the gallery below and the press release after the jump, but if you want to pick something up, you'll have to go in person.

You remember turning 20? the end of teenage years, the beginning of adulthood...that's what Subaru Tecnica International - the performance division better known by its initials STI - celebrates this year, and to mark the occasion, Fuji Heavy is inaugurating the STI Gallery, a new museum in Tokyo that highlights the products and activities of its Subaru racing unit.

Located at 3-9-6 Osawa, Mitaka, Tokyo, the STI Gallery will be open every day (barring certain holidays) from 9:30 am to 7 pm, when visitors can stop by and scope out STI in all its glory. The car exhibition zone displays STI vehicles both past and present, race and road. (Colin McRae's WRC New Zealand-winning 1993 Legacy RS is currently on display to celebrate the launch of the new Legacy). There's also an exhibit of various components and memorabilia and a history section outlining the division's past activities. Seems like a worthwhile way to spend an afternoon if you find yourself in Tokyo with some time to burn.

[Source: World Car Fans]
Subaru opens STI Gallery in Tokyo originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Jun 2009 16:20:00 EST. But the omission has been redressed, with Englishman Peter Nelson opening The Bond Museum tomorrow in Keswick, northwestern England.

Exhibits include the jet pack from Thunderball, the mini jet from Octopussy, the Cagiva from Goldeneye and, of course, lots and lots of cars: a DB5 (Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies), Vanquish (Die Another Day), Lotus Esprit S1 from The Spy Who Loved Me, and the 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 are part of 19 cars in total that will be on display. If you're in Cumbria this weekend, go get your Bond on, and don't forget to send us some pictures...

[Source: Wired]
Car-laden James Bond Museum opens in the UK originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 04 Apr 2009 10:57:00 EST. However, if things are conspiring to keep you from visiting the pyramid of Porsche's history, then allow us to recommend a virtual tour via interactive floorplans, courtesy of Wallpaper. There are 25 photos from the various floors (almost as beautiful the ones in our gallery below) highlighting the museum's more dramatic locations.
The new monochromatic steel structure at Porscheplatz is designed to be a symbolic icon of the "Porsche Idea" presented, in all its complexity, inside. More than three decades after the original Porsche Museum opened in Stuttgart, Germany, the family-owned automaker invested more than $130 million in an all-new facility to present the storied history of the marque. The new museum is designed to welcome more than 200,000 visitors each year. In addition to the 80 historic vehicles on rolling display, the inspiring building houses a workshop for restoration, historical archives and generous conference areas. We were invited to a special preview of the new Porsche Museum just days before the doors officially opened last week. Follow us inside for a tour after the jump.

Gallery: Porsche Museum in Stuttgart

All photos Copyright (C) 2009 Michael C. The museum spans over 1,000 square meters of floor space, wrapped in stunning architecture and housing a collection of over 80 significant Porsches from the marque's history, from the first 356 to the latest Panamera. Included among the expositions is a section dedicated to the evolution of the 911 Turbo, an array of competition cars - including Porsche's victorious rally, Dakar and Le Mans challengers and Niki Lauda's Porsche-powered McLaren - concept cars from across the decades, some of Ferdinand Porsche's original tractors and more.

The museum will be officially dedicated later this week before it opens its doors to the public on January 31, after which the museum will be open from Tuesday to Sunday every week from 9 am until 6 pm. We'll be posting our own tour of the review soon, but in the meantime, check out the museum's website and the images in the gallery below.

Gallery: Porsche Museum

[Source: Porsche via Le Blog Auto]
New Porsche museum opens this week in Stuttgart originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 18:31:00 EST.
Tucked away in a green, waterfall-riven valley between Akureyri and Husavik, Iceland is the hamlet of Ystafell (who-stuh-fel is the closest we can get to proper pronunciation). Akureyri has some of the best nightlife in Iceland, while Husavik has whales and a museum dedicated to things unmentionable on a family site. That leaves the Transport Museum at Ystafell practically unnoticed, which is a shame, because features two barns full of unlikely vehicles, each with an authentic Icelandic story. Follow the jump for the tale of our recent visit, and check out the gallery of hi-res photos below.

Gallery: Transport Museum Ystafell

Continue reading The cars of Ystafell: vintage Icelandic metal

The cars of Ystafell: vintage Icelandic metal originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Sep 2008 19:28:00 EST. Unlike the BMW M1 Homage concept, this one's actually a runner, as evidenced by the video posted below the fold, showing the concept being driven from the studio into a car carrier then unloaded at the BMW Museum in Munich.

No details about the roadster are available from the BMW-web.tv site, but judging by the open cockpit and massive width, we're expecting something akin the M1, sans roof and sporting many of the design cues found on the homage. The museum has been recognized by the Guinness Book of Records for creating the "strongest artificially generated tornado in the world." The 34.4 meter high (that is 37.2 yards to those metrically challenged) vortex was not designed as an attraction, but to channel smoke out of the building in the event of a fire. The architecture wonderment that is the museum did not make use of any fire doors in the design (surely they would get in the way of the architect's vision). In order to meet regulations, the building engineers had to determine a way to keep smoke from spreading beyond the fire level, the tornado is the resulting solution. The twister takes around seven minutes to materialize and is generated by 144 jets and 28 tons of air. The low pressure area at the center of the tornado works to create a jet stream that draws smoke out of the building's corridors and funnels it upwards and out an exhaust vent on the roof. Check the gallery for photos of a carbon dioxide infused tornado demonstration.
