Proving that there's no such thing as too much luxury, Bentley has released details for the updated 2014 Mulsanne that will debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Most of the additions are to improve rear-seat accommodations inside, with the addition of Comfort Specification and Entertainment Specification options.

The Comfort Specification adds some conveniences you might have in your living room, such as padded headrests, stowable footrests and seat cushions filled with duck down. Likewise, the new Entertainment Specification brings tech you might find in your home, including a wifi hotspot, seat trays that are now bigger to accommodate an iPad and keyboard and an entertainment system that gets a pair of eight-inch screens, a DVD player, wireless headphones and premium audio. Rear occupants in the 2014 Mulsanne will also get revised rear door panels with more storage and power-retractable curtains for both side- and rear windows.

Bentley is also offering up new paint and leather colors, too, and to finish it all off, Mulsanne customers will also be able to order a six-piece, handmade luggage set.

That was quick - it was only was only three weeks ago that the Bentley Mulsanne Vision concept, a droptop take on the brand's flagship sedan, was sketched out for the Pebble Beach crowd. Now Autocar reports that a production version is expected to be approved later this year, with a launch something like two years away. And even though it hasn't been officially given the go-ahead, it has a price: "at least £275,000" ($436,232 U.S.). That price would make for a £50,000 premium ($79,313 U.S.) - at least - over the current UK price of the Mulsanne sedan.

Just as the Continental GTC differs from its coupe sibling, Autocar says the Mulsanne cabrio would be unique from the A-pillars back as compared to the sedan. Shortened by roughly six inches in both length and wheelbase, frameless doors and a lowered windshield will contribute additional rakishness, and note the rear fender treatment meant to evoke the fifties-era Bentley R Type in the upper right corner of the sketch above. At launch it is predicted that power will come from the twin-turbo 6.75-liter V8, but Autocar predicts that V12 power being developed for the production version of the EXP 9 F SUV will eventually find its way up front.
Bentley Mulsanne convertible expected to be greenlit this year originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 08 Sep 2012 17:47:00 EST.
The arrival of the all-new flagship Bentley Mulsanne sedan in 2010 (for the 2011 model year) marked the departure of the range-topping Azure convertible, leaving the Continental GTC range as the automaker's only open-roof models.

Bentley's big convertible program took a huge leap forward this past weekend at Pebble Beach when the automaker allowed a select few to view its Mulsanne Vision Concept, a possible successor to the discontinued Azure. Unfortunately, Bentley refused to allow photography and will not be releasing pictures - only the sketch above, and those in our gallery, are offered for your consumption.

On the positive side, Autoblog did see the four-place convertible in the flesh and we found it every bit as spectacular as the sketches. The Mulsanne-based concept features a steeply raked windshield, a chopped wheelbase (about six inches shorter) and two lengthened doors to bring all the proportions in properly (the inside panels of the doors have two latches on each interior panel, so rear seat passengers may open them from the inside as well). In addition to the sharp hydroformed aluminum panels, there are LED accent lights on the top of the rear decklid. The interior seats four passengers comfortably, with a sea of soft leather, polished stainless steel and signature wood.

Even though Bentley says its designers are "providing a glimpse into the potential future of the marque's flagship family," we say the Vision concept is much closer to production than they would lead us to believe. Its power-operated roof mechanism (seemingly lifted from the Azure) worked flawlessly, as did all switchgear (including the unique interior door handles) and lights. We expect Bentley will reveal its newest star at an auto show in the very near future.
Continue reading Bentley announces Mulsanne Vision Concept, a new flagship droptop

Bentley announces Mulsanne Vision Concept, a new flagship droptop originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 19 Aug 2012 20:01:00 EST.
It's not every day that a country celebrates the diamond jubilee of its reigning monarch. In fact, this is only the second time they're doing so in Great Britain, making the sixtieth anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II a cause for, well... jubilation. And to help with the festivities, Bentley has launched an exclusive special edition. But rather than make it another Continental, this time it went with the top-of-the-line Mulsanne.

Limited to just 60 examples, the Bentley Mulsanne Diamond Jubilee Edition was unveiled not in the UK itself, but in Beijing - the capital of the country that is now Bentley's largest market, where the automaker has just opened one of its largest showrooms, and where the Beijing Motor Show is now getting under way.

For the special edition, Bentley's own in-house coachbuilder Mulliner (which also built the unique State Limousine that carries Her Majesty about) gave the Mulsanne such special touches as gold-embroidered headrests, veneered fold-down tables in the back and leather cushions, all with the gold motif of a classic royal carriage.

The jubilant Mulsanne can be ordered in a variety of muted combinations of the colors of the Union Jack, but one would simply not discuss the matter of the bill in polite company. You are, however, invited to peruse the press release below, as well as the high-resolution images in the gallery above.
Continue reading Bentley honors Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee with 60 special Mulsannes

Bentley honors Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee with 60 special Mulsannes originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 08:28:00 EST.
The Bentley Mulsanne Mulliner Driving Specification is a lengthy name for a sedan with a lengthy menu of delicate and expensive details: "Flying B" fender vents, titanium fasteners for the two-piece, 21-inch wheels, drilled alloy pedals, a new Sport setting that provides additional handling chops to a three-ton, 505-horsepower sedan that gets from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.

Inside, along with diamond quilting and non-perforated tramlines, the hides have perforations shaped like diamonds. Because, you know, who really wants to sit on circles? When the world is not enough you buy a Mulsanne.
The Bentley Mulsanne Executive Interior Concept has officially dropped the "Concept" portion of its name. Making the most of the rear quarters in the Mulsanne, the boffins at Bentley have installed power-folding wood veneer picnic tables that are topped by iPads and Bluetooth wireless keyboards, additionally controlled by Apple's Magic trackpads. In the armrest are a telephone and a Tibaldi pen, and in the trunk is a Mac Mini computer.

None of that counts the eight-inch screens in the headrests or the 15.6-inch screen that drops from the roof. Those are controlled by the Bentley app installed on the iPads, with listening handled by Bluetooth headphones.

It takes 170 hours for the craftsmen to complete the work of installation, and if you need to ask how much their time adds to the cost of a Mulsanne, then you already know the answer. More details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Bentley putting Executive Interior concept into production on Mulsanne

Bentley putting Executive Interior concept into production on Mulsanne originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 10:32:00 EST.
Bentley has long been associated with the Mulliner moniker, having comissioned the centuries-old company to design the coachwork for many of its original road cars. In the modern sense, Mulliner is an official department of Bentley, in charge of crafting customized vehicles for those buyers who want something more bespoke than what's on offer from the automaker's standard product line. Their latest creation is the Bentley Mulsanne Mulliner Driving Specification, the first time that the Mulliner name has been applied to Bentley's new flagship sedan.

While much of the Mulsanne remains the same including the twin-turbo 6.75-liter twin-turbo V8, it's the small touches that set the Mulliner Driving Specification apart. The interior gets unique features such as 'Flying B' wing vents and special diamond-quilted leather seats and trim that uses an improved perforation process. The exterior is set apart with new lightweight 21-inch aluminum wheels available in painted or polished finishes as well as subtle Mulliner badging on the front fenders. Customers can also choose from a dizzying array of 100 exterior paint colors and 22 interior leather colors. Finally, a new 'Sport' setting allows the driver to select a suspension and steering setup for improved handling and feedback.

The Bentley Mulsanne Mulliner Driving Specification will be making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month alongside the standard Mulsanne that receives a few new options for 2013. Follow the jump for all the details in the official press release from Bentley, or check out the high-res photos in the gallery above.
Continue reading 2013 Bentley Mulsanne Mulliner Driving Specification slated for Geneva debut

2013 Bentley Mulsanne Mulliner Driving Specification slated for Geneva debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 10:29:00 EST.
When Daimler let slip that Maybach was on the chopping block, the German automaker reportedly insisted that ultra-luxury editions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class would replace the doomed marque. We're all for a smattering of low volume, seriously pricey S-Class variants, but will the richest and most influential Maybach buyers feel the same way?

Automotive News reports that Bentley is betting that stars like Jay-Z and Samuel L. Jackson will want more than a gussied-up Benz, and the luxury car make is sending out olive branches in the form of a letter campaign. The premium Volkswagen brand is asking the high-rollers to step into a Bentley Mulsanne or perhaps a top-shelf Continental GT. To help persuade VIPs to switch to Bentley, the automaker is inviting select Maybach owners to tour its Crewe, England home.

Given the fact that many typical soccer moms and dads can afford an ML-Class, we can see why some movie stars and sultans would want to steer clear of the Three-Pointed Star. But is Bentley really going to gain much by wooing the 200 annual Maybach buyers? If a few more rap stars roll in a Bentley in their next music video, then the answer would appear to be yes.
Bentley courting Maybach celebs with letter-writing campaign originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jan 2012 13:59:00 EST.
You don't port over an executive from one company to another without expecting him (or her) to apply the same sort of successful formulas that brought success for his former employer to the new one. And that's certainly the case with automotive executives. Alan Mulally, for example, was tipped to do for Ford what he had done at Boeing - namely, to put the American company at the forefront of the industry - and by many accounts, he has succeeded. The same could be said for Wolfgang Dürheimer.

As executive vice-president at Porsche, Dürheimer oversaw the expansion of the 911 model into a huge range of variants that, on the outgoing version, topped over two dozen. It's a formula that has helped Porsche become one of the most profitable automakers in the industry. And according to the latest from Autocar, that's what he hopes to do with the Continental family in his new position at Bentley, over which he has presided now for less than a year.

Between three body-styles and as many engine specifications, the Continental has already spawned a good eight variants, but if Dürheimer has his way - and he is chief executive, after all - that could expand significantly on the facelifted model to include lightweight models and various special editions.

Beyond the Continental range, however, the Mulsanne could grow a long-wheelbase model (much as the Rolls-Royce Phantom has) as well as coupe and convertible versions to replace the Brooklands and Azure models, respectively. These, in addition to ongoing rumors of a four-door coupe and an SUV to join the Flying B range from Crewe.
Bentley CEO wants model variants to proliferate to Porsche 911-like levels originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 11:01:00 EST.
If you have to to work while being shuttled in the back seat of a car, it's hard to find a more comfortable mobile office than a Bentley Mulsanne. Still, all of that luxury won't aid you in spell-checking TPS reports as you're more likely to be lulled to sleep. Bentley has a new interior concept that will keep you alert, awake, connected and running the show like the boss you truly are.

It's called the Mulsanne Executive Interior Concept, and it's way nicer than your office. No, not the office of the person who can afford the car, specifically your office. The British builder of luxuriously exotic automobiles has put together an interior fit for a constantly connected king, which comes complete with a list of items to make sure whatever task at hand is finished before leaving the coddling confines of the Mulsanne.
The tables are home to separate iPad work stations, each of which includes a Bluetooth wireless keyboard. Keeping that iPad and keyboard combo in check is a Mac Mini mounted in the trunk. The Apple product brigade is joined by an iPod that can play music but also serves as the remote control for the rear seat information and entertainment devices. A telephone is nestled into the armrest alongside a Tibaldi pen. If you're not familiar with the Tibaldi brand of writing instruments, just know that prices range from way-too-much-for-a-pen to worth-more-than-the-car-you-drive. Regardless, we're sure it takes beautiful notes that pertain to the morning meeting, which you attended from the back of your super luxury sedan.
Once the work is done, you can kick back and relax while watching your company's stock rise on the ticker rolling across the drop-down 15.6-inch high-definition LCD. It's mounted on the ceiling and is the perfect tool to stop the driver from sneaking glances at you and your secretary.

Continue reading Bentley Mulsanne Executive Interior Concept is how to roll like a real boss

Bentley Mulsanne Executive Interior Concept is how to roll like a real boss originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 13:22:00 EST.
Just as Bentley publically unveils its new Continental GTC at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the company has announced sales figures for the first eight months of 2011. Things are looking good for the British automaker, with an increase of 31 percent compared to this time last year with more than 4,000 cars sold worldwide. The United States, Bentley's largest market, accounted for more than a quarter of the cars delivered, with sales up 36 percent. The largest increases, however, came in Germany and China, where sales are up by two-thirds. Bentley's sales in China exceeded 1,000 for the first time in the brand's history.

Bentley's impressive 2011 may come during a weakened world economy, but the company's rebound is a product of a mostly new line-up. The all-new Mulsanne and the significantly refreshed Continental GT both hit showroom floors for the first time this year. The Continental GTC convertible should also help Bentley continue its strong sales into next year. Follow the jump to read the complete press release from Bentley and be on the lookout for a live photos of the Continental GTC from Frankfurt very soon.
Continue reading Bentley sales up 31 percent year to date

Bentley sales up 31 percent year to date originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 08:30:00 EST.
The 2011 Bentley Mulsanne is officially ready for use by warlords and dictators the world over. Thanks to the work of ArmorTech Motors, the world's tyrants can safely roll over crowds of protesters and the odd land mine swaddled in the comfort of Connolly leather and a high-def entertainment system.

ArmorTech will stretch your Mulsanne a minimum of 20 inches, and refinish the interior with all the bespoke touches your heart desires, including a top-shelf entertainment system and passenger compartment divider wall. If a 20-inch stretch won't cut it, ArmorTech will be happy to stretch the big Bentley a mind-boggling 45 inches.

Armor plating is an optional extra, so if you don't expect to encounter a hail of bullets any time soon, you can opt not to have the extra poundage tacked on. In any case, with the appropriate application of funds, you can distance yourself even further from the Great Unwashed - and those who opted for the plebeian standard Mulsanne.
Bentley Mulsanne stretches out thanks to ArmorTech Motors originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 18:01:00 EST.
According to Auto Express, Bentley may be working on a new version of its legendary Turbo R coupe. Word is that the new Turbo R would be a luxury super coupe based on the Mulsanne, packing close to 600 horsepower from a tuned version of the sedan's twin-turbo 6.75-liter V8.

If Bentley builds the car, we could see it as early as 2013, possibly designed very similar to what you'd imagine a two-door Mulsanne would look like. Bentley is still mum on whether the car will be built, but if it is, it could serve as a fitting replacement for the aging Brooklands.

At this point, the Turbo R is still purely theoretical; with no confirmation about its existence, it's hard to say for sure when it will debut or what it will actually look like. Look for more updates as they arrive.

Do not press the start button. Take a deep breath. Savor the craftsmanship. Take it all in.

Begin by examining the four brightly-polished organ-stop vent plungers. The stainless steel knobs situated high on the dashboard are easy to miss at a cursory glance. However, each is tasked with the important role of shutting down airflow from one of the bulls-eye air vents. Decades ago, the smooth metal rods would have been connected directly to the mechanical flapper. Today, with the physical connection severed by technology, a series of electronic micro switches sends orders to digital servos that handle the job. Understanding the tactile significance of that age-old mechanical movement, Bentley engineers painstakingly replicated the gratifying feedback of a precisely polished steel rod sliding over smooth felt to pull a soft leather damper closed. Their accomplishment is all but flawless.

Tasked with building an all-new flagship that captures the essence of the Bentley marque - incomparable coach-built luxury and a passion for power and speed - the engineers and designers in Crewe left nothing to chance. The result is the 2011 Bentley Mulsanne.
Now... press the start button.

Do you have a "Bentley Section" in your garage? You probably have an "Oil Stain Wing" and possibly a "Random Pile of Parts Vestibule" but we're willing to bet the majority of you don't have a whole portion of your garage dedicated to one specific marque. Among many things, that's what separates Jay Leno from the rest of us peons and he's also utilizing his Bentley Section to play host to a new member from the First Family of Crewe: the 2011 Bentley Mulsanne.

Leno looks the luxosedan over in the confines of his Big Dog Garage before hitting the surrounding Southern California streets, and the video is waiting for you just past the jump.

Bentley Mulsane versus... Hyundai Equus? - Click above to watch video after the jump

With the launch of the all-new Equus, Hyundai has taken another step towards the deep end of the luxury car segment. However, Bentley has a touch more experience in this arena and its new Mulsanne is decadence on wheels. The two companies sit on opposite ends of the automotive spectrum, but Motor Trend seems to think they warrant a comparison. We suspect Bentley will not be pleased...

Two of MT's scribes hop into the back of both the Equus and the Mulsanne for a chat about the two luxury sedans, and one of them is none other than Autoblog alum Jonny Lieberman, decked out in his fancy new buff-book duds (the other is MT stalwart Ed Loh). Both vehicles pack a fair amount of amenities, but the difference between $70,000 and $330,000 (with $42k in options) is patently obvious. Just check out the cupholders. So, grab some pâté and a jar of Grey Poupon and check out the video after the jump.

Contrary to what you might expect, successfully keeping tradition alive in the automotive world isn't just about periodically mining one's stylistic back catalog or simply refusing to change altogether. To convincingly abide by the spirit of one's history without running the risk of extinction, or worse - self-parody - requires stealthy innovation, and to do so is a decidedly tricky undertaking.

Just ask Bentley. The British automaker has a long history of artfully highlighting its considerable heritage, from the exploits of the fabulous Bentley Boys to the timeless craftsmanship employed in its interiors. And despite the upright look of its new flagship, the 2011 Mulsanne, much thought and effort has been exerted into making what is actually a very modern proposition seem... traditional. Accomplishing this in an authentic and timeless manner is particularly important for an automaker like Bentley. Given the rather lengthy model lifecycles that small-volume manufacturers are often forced to adopt, it's crucial to nail the entire package the first time. Follow the jump to see if they've managed the feat.

2011 Bentley Mulsanne - Click above for high-res image gallery

Greetings from England, where we are attending the international launch of the 2011 Bentley Mulsanne. We've just returned from touring the model's new assembly line in Crewe with Project Leader Ashley Wickham, and we have some powertrain tidbits to share with you.

As the head honcho of Bentley's range-topping line, Wickham informs us that the Mulsanne was designed exclusively as a rear-drive model, preserving the decades-old lineage of the Arnage and its variants. When the new model was being conceived, all-wheel drive and a higher cylinder count were indeed on the table, as the Mulsanne's less-expensive stablemate, the Continental, has both more driven wheels and more firepots (twelve versus eight). However, the decision was made to keep the new Mulsanne as a more traditional grand touring model in the Arnage mold, hence its RWD and identical 6.75-liter V8 engine displacement (despite outward similarities, the twin-turbo engine is, in fact, all-new).

When we asked Wickham about future powertrain possibilities, he acknowledged that flex-fuel is in the cards; a predictable enough development considering that Bentley's high-profile Supersports spearheaded the news that the entire Continental range will go flex-fuel in June. And while Wickham stopped just short of ruling out a future diesel model, he did comment that one isn't presently in the works. Despite diesel's low-revving, torque-rich similarities to the company's gasoline V8, Wickham openly questioned how well such a powerplant would align with the marque's heritage. Equally unsurprising is that Wickham didn't mince words about hybrid technology, making it clear that gas-electric power is most definitely not in keeping with Bentley's flagship model.

For the moment, at least, those planning on commissioning a new Mulsanne will be forced to make do with the traditional gas-fed V8. Given that the new engine offers 505 horsepower and Bentley's famous 'Wall of Torque' delivery (752 pound-feet of the stuff) along with improved emissions and fuel economy, we're guessing that buyers won't find this any great hardship.

We've now seen the Bentley Mulsanne at several different auto shows since it made its debut at the Pebble Beach Concours last August, but we've never seen it motion. Bentley has now addressed that oversight with some running footage shot on location in Scotland.

Other than seeing it rolling in its natural habitat the video doesn't tell us anything new about the Mulsanne, but we're pretty confident its manners will be in keeping with its stately looks and craftsmanship. Check out the video after the jump.
Car buyers forking out a few hundred thousand dollars for a Bentley expect more than just a little luxury. And when the Bentley Mulsanne is unleashed upon the yacht and G5 owners of the world, the folks in Crewe, England know they need to come strong with otherworldly materials and craftsmanship.

A quick peek at the plush Mulsanne interior shows that Bentley designers and engineers have gone all out, but a few high resolution photos doesn't tell the whole story. Bentley created a five minute video to explain some of the craftsmanship that goes into creating the Mulsanne interior by hand. For example, five people are in charge of inspecting and cutting all the leather that goes into the ultra luxury barge, and those cuts take three hours per vehicle. Hit the jump to watch the video, but only if you can live with the fact that you'll most likely never even get the chance to sit in such an exquisitely executed interior.
