Land Rover is busily working on creating lighter versions of the its offerings in an attempt to head looming fuel economy regulations off at the pass. That includes the Range Rover Sport. Details are skimpy as to exactly what kind of weight savings we can expect from the next-generation vehicle when it debuts, but it's clear that Land Rover is already hard at work on a few prototypes. Our spy photographers managed to catch a mule out and about on public streets wearing sparse camouflage and plenty of sheetmetal from the current SUV.

Next year will see the Range Rover Sport equipped with a new eight-speed automatic transmission manufactured by the gearbox gurus at ZF paired to a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 engine in the UK. The transmission isn't expected to be mated with the company's gasoline V8 offerings, however. Stay tuned for more information on the next-generation Range Rover Sport as it becomes available.
Land Rover prepping new Range Rover Sport originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 13:31:00 EST.
Toyota/Subaru Coupe test mule - Click above to enlarge

There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the joint venture between Toyota and Subaru and the Japanese automakers' drive to create a new performance-oriented coupe. Toyota unveiled its FT-86 Concept, which previews what a production-ready model could look like, and we've seen a test mule of this car running around the Nürburgring, making it no secret that the companies are looking to make their respective coupes potent performers when they finally roll off of assembly lines.

Now, one of our readers has spied the Toyobaru testing on public roads. It doesn't look like much has changed from the earlier mules that were spotted, probably due, in part, to Toyota having much larger fish to fry at the moment. However, it's good to see that plans for this coupe are still on track, and just because the outside cladding hasn't been adjusted doesn't mean that there aren't hot new tweaks under the hood. If we had to guess, judging by the more upright greenhouse and the wheels, this is probably the Subie variant. All we know is, we can't wait to drive one. Hat tip to Alejandro!
Reader Spy: Is that you, Toyobaru? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Feb 2010 12:27:00 EST.
For the life of us, we can't figure this. BMWblog has posted a video of what surely looks like an O.G. BMW M1, dressed up in that ubiquitous swirlydelic camouflage du jour and parked on a Munich street. It's either a very clever gag being put on by someone, or something potentially awesome is afoot. Either way, we can dig it. See for yourselves after the jump. Thanks to Mike S. for the tip!
While it has aged gracefully, the Japanese automaker is readying a facelift for 2010, and some early mules have just been caught by spy shooters roaming in wintery Michigan.

While the prototypes have been quite heavily disguised, it is still possible to see that beneath their anti-spy cloaks, changes are taking shape. Significantly upsized air intakes have taken up residence up front, and tape around the rear lenses could indicate that the taillamp clusters may be altered as well. A blacked-out Cayman with larger wheel arches and bolt-on fender flares was spotted recently, and it could be a tester for either car. With the rumored suspension tweaks for the Cayman S Sport, this could be making room for a serious set of rubber to take advantage of, not to mention 303 hp. Or perhaps the next Cayman will get some bigger shoes... and that wouldn't be such a bad thing either.

[Source: Global Motors]
Spy Shots: Cayman with bigger wheel arches, a mule for the S Sport? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Sep 2008 08:58:00 EST. We'll see the official unveiling in Geneva most likley, and the concept has certainly whetted our appetite. Aimed at the smaller end of the premium CUV market, the XC60 will take on comers like the BMW X3 and the upcoming Mercedes Freeside, as well as the Land Rover LR2, with which the XC60 shares pieces and corporate parents.

AutoExpress has posted spy shots of an XC60 dressed for modesty cavorting in the snow. Comparing the mule to shots of the concept shows that the major points of the design are headed for the showroom after some tweaking. The changes are pretty minor, the door handles change, the roofline appears to be a little higher, though still with the same profile, so you might actually be able to load things in the production car. It does look like the curvaceous taillights are headed for reality, only slightly changed, too. The pictures don't offer any insight as to whether the trick two-piece hatch from the concept will make it to the public, and we're going to bet that the all-white interior will be ditched for something less cleaning-intensive, too. For the most part, what we saw in the concept is what we'll be able to buy in early 2009.

[Source: Auto Express]

Gallery: Volvo XC60 Concept

Spy Shots: Volvo XC60 out playin' in the snow originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Jan 2008 14:07:00 EST. An upright test mule has been spotted running around at BMW's facility in the frozen hinterlands. There have been rumors of a smaller Roller swirling about, and these shots seem to support the conjecture. BMW's 7-series will reportedly serve as the basis for the new luxury whip, and the car in the photos appears identical to the surrounding 7's from the A-pillar back. The stiff upper lip has likely been grafted on to facilitate cooling and airflow for the engine room. Plus, you could do worse than an E65 with a better schnoz and an old-world interior. Check out all five spy shots in the gallery below.

Gallery: Rolls Royce RR4 - spy shots

Spy Shots: Baby Rolls nabbed originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 Jan 2008 17:47:00 EST.
With its Le Mans racing program soon to be bolstered by GT2 and LMP1 entries, and with sales of its ever-so-desirable GTs ever increasing, Aston Martin is preparing to add the four-door Rapide to its production line-up. And if this spy shot is any indication, things seem to be moving along nicely.

Aston was anticipated to decide by year's end where the Rapide would be built. Although the company just moved to a new facility in Gaydon, the automaker was reportedly in discussions with a number of smaller contractors - including Pininfarina, Karmann, Magna-Steyr and Valmet - over potentially outsourcing the Rapide's manufacturing. As we already know, these private coachbuilders are all in dire need of the contract.

Confirmation that Aston would build the Rapide was one of the first things its new owners did after acquiring the company from Ford, and we're looking forward to seeing the production version in the flesh after seeing this spy shot.

Scheduled to bow at next September's Paris show, the third-generation Megane is expected to do away with the current model's sharp creases in favor of a smoother silhouette. The spy shots show that the current Megane's distinctive upright curved rear glass will give way to a more streamlined greenhouse, drawing on the lines of the new Laguna sedan. The range is anticipated to include three-door and five-door hatches, an estate wagon, a two-door coupe and a hardtop convertible. The new Megane's normally-aspirated 1.4-liter base engine is expected to be replaced by the Clio's 1.2-liter turbo, but otherwise the engines should carry over from the current model's, ranging all the way to the 225-horsepower turbo Renaultsport version.

It is a Lotus, it isn't a Lotus. Today we think it could be, despite earlier reports to the contrary. But whether that mysetrious test mule spotted with Lotus paperwork was actually a Lotus or not, the famed British sportscar company in fact does have a supercar planned for the near future. This right from the lion's mouth, the lion in this case being Lotus' American chief Mike Kimberly.

Not much is known about what form the car will take or what we'll find under the hood, but given Lotus' focus on handling as well as its current and past models, a mid-engine/rear-drive layout would be a safe bet. The supercar would cap a rapidly expanding range of sportscars for Lotus, and not just variants of the Elise like we have now. A new Esprit is on the way, despite powertrain-related set-backs, and the 2+2 known as "Project Eagle" is slated for debut at the British auto show before hitting the market in 2009.

The three new models are part of the company's plan to dramatically increase production from last year's 2,875 to 8,000 over the next several years.

Insiders have confirmed this Middle Eastern-market Chevy Lumina SS mule with severely truncated rear doors is indeed a mule for the production Chevy Camaro that will hopefully go on sale as a 2009 model. Chris Doane shooting for Brenda Priddy snapped the pics and tells us that in addition to the shortened rear doors, the wheelbase is obviously shorter compared to a normal VE sedan from Holden and the roofline is also lower to the ground. Priddy adds that while we don't know what engine is in the mule, expect the production car to have your choice of GM's 3.6L direct-inject V6, a "regular" V8 and top-shelf motor based on the LS8 engine putting out close to 500 HP. A convertible should follow a year after the coupe arrives, just like the Camaro Convertible Concept showed up 365 days after the coupe concept.

[Photos: Chris Doane /Brenda Priddy & Company]

Gallery: Camaro Mule Caught Testing in the US

Spy Shots: Chevy Camaro mule caught Stateside originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Sep 2007 14:07:00 EST. The Lambo-ute successor reportedly uses a version of the Cayenne platform, likely powered by the Gallardo V10.

GermanCarBlog, on the other hand, attributes the outward subterfuge to development work on a Porsche GT Coupe.
Manufacturers testing development mules for upcoming models go to great lengths to camouflage their prototypes in order to hide from the public what they're working on. That never stops the motoring press, in print and in cyberspace, from speculating on what that the camouflage is disguising, usually with considerable accuracy. A certain set of spy shots, however, have been enigmatic, resulting in a number of different theories.

The spy shots in question show a two-door sports car being developed by Ferrari. We've speculated that the shots in question show an "entry level" Ferrari model, possibly to be labeled as a new Dino, despite Maranello's repeated denials with which, by now, we're all familiar. Our friends over at Motor Authority say it's a new model from sister-company Maserati, to be positioned below the new GranTurismo. The folks at Carscoop, meanwhile, insist that the prototype is more simply a convertible version of the aforementioned GT.

Continue reading Speculazione: Is this a new Maserati or the Ferrari Dino?

Speculazione: Is this a new Maserati or the Ferrari Dino? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jul 2007 15:28:00 EST.

The pre-production version of the car, previewed by the C-XF concept car at the Detroit show, is anticipated for unveiling in Frankfurt in September, in advance of expected delivery to begin next Spring.

If the concept car wasn't enough of an indication, the camouflaged test mule hints at what should be one sexy luxo-feline indeed. Click on to Jalopnik to see the full gallery of spy shots.

The historic Italian tuning house, long a part of the Fiat group, has been hard at work turning Fiat's models into hot hatches worthy of the scorpion badge's revival. At Geneva we saw the production preview of the Grande Punto Abarth, and the Abarth version of the newly-launched 500 retromobile is expected at Tokyo. With their work cut out for them, the Fiat Abarth team is pounding the test track developing the dynamic duo.

Both cars are anticipated to benefit from tightened-up suspensions, beefed-up brakes, revised bodywork, trim and badging, and two high-performance four-cylinder engines: one producing 150 horsepower, and an even more powerful version with output in the neighborhood of 180-200hp. With these kinds of hot hatches looming on the horizon, and a Bravo Abarth expected to follow shortly thereafter, the future is looking good.

But we can't help but get excited for what promises to be one of the most tantalizing applications of the more-power-less-weight battle cry. We've seen what an improvement the formula made to the F430's predecessor, the 360 Modena, so stripping weight off the already faster-than-spit F430, tightening it up and squeezing a few extra prancing horses out of its screaming powerplant should make for an even hotter ride.

To recap, the 430 CS is anticipated to strip an additional 100 kg or so off the curb weight of its "ordinary" sister by stripping out non-essentials and replacing some of the sheet-metal with carbon-fiber body panels, all while boosting output by an extra 20 horsepower or so thanks primarily to a freer-flowing exhaust system with tips placed higher in the rear panel, like on the previous 360 CS.

These latest shots of the 430 CS test mule, which you can see in all their glory by following the link, were snapped at the Nurburgring and show a revised front end with what look like flared nostrils and a track that has apparently been even further widened over the already broad-shouldered F430. Slight changes, to be sure, but the fine-tuning of perfection has us eagerly counting down to its anticipated debut at the Frankfurt show in September.

We've been pretty nutty lately with our new, improved site design and our groundbreaking car giveaway, so please forgive our delay at getting back to this. Our first delightful round of witty repartee centers around the excellent spy shots from the last couple weeks, and more specifically Jaguar's new Starship Enterprise looking shift selector. Expanding on the abundance of uberteched European cars, we carp for a while on the proliferation of new and ill-conceived user interface paradigms. Coming back to native shores, we touch on the new CTS-V, which will eschew the need for bumper nuts by a conspicuously bulged hood hiding a supercharged V8 capable of roasting the competition. Speaking of big power, we touch on the rumored NSX mule running around the Nurburgring in S2000 drag, and then concede that we really have no idea. Again, we come back to the US after a quick jaunt to the Continent, and discuss the upcoming Chevy version of GM's Lambda CUV. We're split on whether that's a good idea or not, but we all agree that the Utes themselves are a great product from the General. What the heck, let's go back across the Atlantic to close it out with insane VAG concepts at the Worthersee gathering in Austria, which saw the unveiling of a mid engine twin turbo GTI, the Audi TT Clubsport design study, and the Pirelli Edition GTI that is a real production car. We decided to only consume about 37 minutes of your time, as we'll be back soon. Enjoy the show!

SUBSCRIBE to the Autoblog Podcast in iTunes
LISTEN to the show now
ADD the Autoblog Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator
Autoblog Podcast #67 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 02 Jun 2007 09:52:00 EST. We've all ogled the spy pictures by now, but Inside Line has produced a nifty little video of what we all think is a development mule for the next Acura NSX. Just listen to that angry exhaust note - that ain't no 4 pot. The S2000 duds are a nice blending tactic - it doesn't draw that much attention to itself, and it gives Honda time to get it together after their body design was met with a yawn in Detroit. The grey bomber makes good use of its rumored 5.5 liter V10 and SH-AWD as it digs into corners and claws its way around the German racetrack. Unlike the original NSX, this time around, the Honda supercar platform will be front-engined, and may not be called NSX. The high points of this mule have already been covered, so click the pic and enjoy the video.

[Source: Inside Line]
Spy Video: Acura NSX mule originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 26 May 2007 09:28:00 EST. The program has progressed to the point of wheeling prototypes of different cab and bed configurations around Detroit Rock City. The spy shot ninjas at KGP snagged some really clear pictures of the new trucks dressed in Tempur-Pedic livery. It's not a shock that Ford's keeping the future of their biggest seller under tight wraps, with acres of foam and custom dash covers hiding much of the new interior.

From what we can glean by examining the pictures, there's a new three-bar grille, and the headlights look reminiscent of what's on the Expedition, but larger. The bed looks really tall, but that's likely a ruse created with foam. The interior looks comfortable and accomodating, just like the current F150s furnishings, and we'll have to wait until we can try one before we pass judgement on materials and fit and finish. The truck wars are currently at a fever pitch, and we're anticipating it to only heat up within the next year and a half. Rumor has it that the new F150 might roll out in about six months at the North American International Auto Show. If it does, the Tundra/GMT900/FSeries Battle Royale will make for some very good trucks from all sides, and it will be entertaining to watch the brands beat eachothers brains out in advertising.
Spy Shots: 2009 Ford F-150 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 May 2007 11:57:00 EST.
Eyebrows were raised when spy photogs snapped a Murcielago test mule running test laps around the Nurburgring's venerable Nordschleiff in Germany, sporting a big ol' wing on the back and what looks like carbon fiber body panels. If the reports are correct - and we hope they are - the Murcielago Superleggera will get the same treatment as its little brother, the Gallardo Superleggera, which was unveiled at the Geneva show. That means carbon fiber and composite components will help bring the weight down, while some tweaks to the engine will bring power up, resulting in a delicious increase to the supercar's power-to-weight ratio. It's too early to tell how much extra juice the stripped-down Lambo will get, but it should be a daunting task considering that the engine's output was already augmented for the LP640. Could we be seeing a 700 horsepower figure?

The report suggests an official unveiling of the Murcielago Superleggera in March 2008, but with Lamborghini's pledge to have a new attraction at every major auto show, we wouldn't be surprised - delighted, mind you, but not surprised - to see it take its first bow earlier than that.
