New Zealand officially has a new international-standard road track. Highlands Motorsport Park is a 2.8-mile circuit with three complete tracks that can be safely operated at the same time. Designed to serve as a members-only facility, the boots on the ground say track is likely one of the best in the Southern Hemisphere.

The organizers behind Highlands wanted give the facility a proper break in, so rather than throw some sort of gala, they simply unleashed Craig Baird and a McLaren MP4-12C GT3 on the course with just one instruction: set the first official track record.

Baird is something of a legend in New Zealand, having won three consecutive New Zealand Formula Atlantic Championship titles as well as four consecutive New Zealand Touring Car Championship titles, and he wasted no time in putting hammer to steel in the MP4-12C GT3. By the time all was said and done, the track was left with a 1:41.9-second lap. Something tells us that one's going to stand for awhile, though Baird says he thinks he can get his time down into the 1:30s with a bit more practice. That may be the case, but we're simply glad for the excuse to watch the guy hammer on this McLaren. Check it out.
Continue reading This is how you use a McLaren MP4-12C GT3 to set a lap record at New Zealand's newest track

This is how you use a McLaren MP4-12C GT3 to set a lap record at New Zealand's newest track originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Apr 2013 16:58:00 EST.
Motoring journalist Chris Harris may be less than understated in most of his video reporting, but if this new promotional video for Codemasters' upcoming racer Grid 2 is any indication, he can take direction. Intended to remind us of just how true-to-life the new racing title will be, Harris spends the video chasing McLaren test driver Matt Jackson in the MP4-12C supercar, in real life, on the UK's Brands Hatch circuit. Then, using some practice sessions with Grid 2 and a very expensive looking simulator, attempts to clean up his actual lap and pass the pro.

We'll leave it to you to watch the video and see how it all turns out. For the record though, we couldn't be any more excited about driving the new Grid game for ourselves, when it hits store shelves on May 28.
Continue reading GRID 2 teaches us how to overtake at Brands Hatch

GRID 2 teaches us how to overtake at Brands Hatch originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Feb 2013 12:16:00 EST.
EVO has come out with another gotta-watch-it video, throwing its 2012 Car of the Year contestants around the UK's 1.5-mile Blyton Park track. It's actually a 15-minute teaser for the full-length DVD detailing the magazine's Car of the Year selection, but the tease is worth every <strike>penny</strike> free second.

Tiff Needell and sports car racer Richard Meaden handle the wheel duties, the two driving five pairs of sports cars: Lotus Exige S vs. Porsche Boxster S, Morgan Three-Wheeler vs. Toyota GT86, BMW M135i vs. Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series vs. Alpina B3 GT3, the marquee event pits the McLaren MP4-12C vs. the Pagani Huayra. After a head-to-head lap with commentary during drifts, Meaden takes each car out to set a representative lap time.

You'll find the verdicts, lots of tire smoke, and lines like "Anything you can do sideways I can do sideways" in the video below.
Continue reading EVO "2012 Car of the Year: The Track Battles" is a sports car salmagundi

EVO "2012 Car of the Year: The Track Battles" is a sports car salmagundi originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Nov 2012 17:30:00 EST.
We first laid eyes on the McLaren MP4-12C Can-Am Edition at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance back in August. At the time, it was deemed a design study, but after a "remarkable" reaction from the concept's unveiling, McLaren has announced the GT3-inspired car will be sold in extremely limited numbers. The MP4-12C Can-Am Edition heads to production next March with a hefty price of £375,000 (just under $596,000 USD).

Designed to pay homage to the success of Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme in the Can-Am Series during the 1960s, McLaren calls its MP4-12C Can-Am Edition the ultimate track car, with upgrades that include an extra 30 horsepower squeezed from the mid-mounted 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 (now rated at 630 hp). Aerodynamic changes are said to improve downforce by 30 percent, and the car's lightweight forged alloy wheels get wrapped in Pirelli rubber.

The overall styling of the Can-Am Edition makes it easily distinguishable from the street-legal MP4-12C, but there are also subtle differences to set it apart from the GT3-class racer, such as the engine-cover vents and side air intakes. Even the interior gets a full competition-style setup including six-point harnesses, racing buckets and an F1-derived steering wheel. You can read more about McLaren's latest model in the press release posted below.
Continue reading McLaren MP4-12C Can-Am Edition is go for production

McLaren MP4-12C Can-Am Edition is go for production originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 18 Nov 2012 10:05:00 EST.
So far, so good for McLaren Automotive. Since the MP4-12C coupe started deliveries roughly 16 months ago, there are now 1,500-plus more great supercars traveling the roads of our planet. There have been potholes, particularly the hotly awaited initial UK comparison tests in 2011 that (frankly) both we and McLaren felt the MP4-12C would ace versus the Ferrari 458 Italia & Co.

In almost every test, the 570-horsepower Ferrari eclipsed the 592-horsepower MP4-12C and, beyond lap time tenths and hundredths, the victory was based almost purely on emotional issues: disappointing exhaust sounds from the 3.8-liter twin turbocharged V8, clinically efficient chassis responses tempered by little excitement through the steering wheel or seat of the pants, or an exterior that didn't look quite special enough.

While the exterior of the 12C coupe will take a few years to make "more special" (some at Autoblog share in this criticism), creating a spider version with a folding hardtop automatically dices up the styling conversation on any car. So, we arrived in Malaga, Spain, for two whole days of driving madness in what could easily be termed perfect conditions on road and track, and all for the MP4-12C Spider. That's spelled with an "i".

2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 11:57:00 EST.

Neiman Marcus has released its well-known Christmas Book for 2012, and wrapped up within is a holiday surprise we can cheer about. This holiday, 12 lucky (read: wealthy) gearheads will get a 2013 Neiman Marcus Edition McLaren MP4-12C Spider, a seemingly sunnier pick than last year's Ferrari FF.

Your favorite people in the world will be flabbergasted to receive their Volcano Red Spider with its "stainless-steel, special-edition numbered badge" and matching McLaren luggage set. You'll also get a heartwarming glow knowing that $3,000 of the $354,000 you paid will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"But," you might be saying, "that's $88,250 above the price of everyone else's Spider! Is the luggage worth that much of a premium?" To that we say, "Yes!" Okay, no. But also included in Neiman Marcus' package are two business-class tickets to London's Heathrow airport, two nights at the Coworth Park Hotel (where rooms are a minimum of $380 a night) with meals and a tour of the McLaren Technology Center. But wait, there's more! You'll also get a private VIP dinner with McLaren Chairman Ron Dennis. Wow.

Surely worth the price to someone, but for our money, we expect a platinum numbered badge. Or at least silver. Pewter?

Neiman Marcus picks McLaren MP4-12C Spider for latest Christmas Book originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 13:59:00 EST.
Press days for the 2012 Paris Motor Show have yet to get underway, but Autoblog's European Editor, Matt Davis, has already gotten a good look at what is sure to be one of the exhibition's brightest stars, the McLaren P1.

While Davis was not permitted to take photographs of the new design study until its formal unveiling, our man received a walkaround with designer Frank Stephenson, and what he found was so compelling that he called us right from the show floor to file some notes. According to Davis, "The car is impressively compact - barely bigger than the MP4-12C, but all the comments that were negative about the 12C's design being somewhat basic and derivative should go away with this car." In contrast to most modern supercars that are surprisingly large (e.g. Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Aventador), the P1 follows in the footsteps of the legendary McLaren F1, which was a lot smaller than most people realized. The P1 is about the size of a Porsche 911 GT3, suggesting weight should be held in check.

Designer Stephenson calls the P1's form "shrink wrapped," yet there's still much more surface interest than with the company's MP4-12C. Davis notes that the design is "very organic in that almost all of the aero elements you see are designed into the body." Among the car's aero tricks, when the rear wing air brake rises to its 32-degree angle maximum, there are also hidden underbody Gurney flaps that open to level out the car.

Power estimates are still under wraps, and while the car seen here is still technically a concept, it is widely expected to spawn a near-identical production series sometime late next year.

We're looking forward to sharing more with you shortly, but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery.

UPDATE - Matt Davis has sent along some new notes:

The car as shown is 97-percent final and will be on delivery near the end of 2013.

Remember when we told you the P1 was small? It has the smallest frontal area of any car in its segment, yet it still has over 1,300 pounds of downforce up front at 125 mph (Cd is 0.34).

Hot air flow through the two hood nostrils is divided precisely between the door aero vents and the center roof snorkel.

The car shown here was photographed in the suspension's "race" stance, which is about 1.2-inches lower than normal. Program Director Paul McKenzie says this suspension is as notworthy as the 12c's solution but is goes"one step beyond."

Despite the fact that the design study of its all-new P1 supercar is set to debut in Paris next week, McLaren is still keeping busy selling its existing MP4-12C model. We've heard news of other special edition Macs, after seeing the one-off X-1 Concept at Pebble Beach, and now it seems that a limited edition MP4-12C will be made available for the supercar-inclined one-percenters of Singapore.

Slated to be delivered this weekend to coincide with the Singapore Grand Prix are three Fire Black SGP Edition McLaren MP4-12Cs. Very little is known about these specially modded Macs, save that they feature a unique paint scheme, matching interior, revised front and rear bumpers and lightweight wheels.

According to the rumor-dropper at Teeemspeed, each of the special-edition cars will command a whopping $1.28 million SGD (around $1.04 million U.S.) asking price. Lest you think that price is too steep for even the very capable MP4-12C, note that two of the cars have allegedly been spoken for.
McLaren MP4-12C Fire Black SGP Edition for Singapore, priced over $1M originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 15:30:00 EST.
We've already watched the 2012 Best Driver's Car competition from Motor Trend numerous times, and like us, apparently many M/T viewers had questions about the week-long, nine-car comparison. Not wanting to disappoint its audience, the crew got together to enjoy a few pints while reflecting on the experience and respond to viewer questions during an episode of The Downshift.

It sounds like one of the most frequent questions asked was why some cars made the list and others were left out in the cold. First and foremost, the editors wanted to assemble a group of the newest (or significantly updated) most fun-to-drive cars available, but had to do so within the constraints of the automakers' test vehicle fleets. This explains why, for instance, the Subaru BRZ made it in to the final group of nine, while no Ferrari did.

M/T also addressed the age-old question of how and why a non-manual transmission car could be considered a top driver's car. Editors were quick to point out that, with the great automated manual gearboxes used on the Porsche 911, Nissan GT-R and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Coupe, all that the cars were really missing was a clutch pedal.

Some of the more interesting bits of the conversation included a breakdown of tire and brake replacements required during this massive comparison. We were amazed to find out that only four sets of tires were shredded, but the "surprising amount of brakes" that required replacement definitely made sense for a competition like this at a track like Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Another thing that caught our attention was the amount of negative feedback in regards to the Lamborghini Aventador (which finished dead last) - from the failed brakes to Autoblog-alumnus Jonny Lieberman stating that "it had no business on a racetrack."

From Jonny's praise of the PDK transmission to former Editor-in-chief Angus Mackenzie's vibrant description of the 911's handling, it's easy to see why the Porsche was named M/T's Best Driver's Car for 2012.

It has become clear that the McLaren MP4-12C is car that can match Ferrari and Aston Martin in terms of outright performance, and with vehicles like the X-1 Concept, we're starting to believe that the company can hang with the big boys in terms of special editions, too.

Case in point is this six-example "Project Alpha" model that's headed to McLaren's Chicago dealer. The Project Alpha supercar - revealed to Autoblog via a sales brochure in PDF form - represents a stylish amalgam of bits and pieces from the company's Special Operations catalog.

"These are cars commissioned by our Chicago dealer in response to customer demand..."

A representative of Chicago McLaren was able to confirm that the 2012 model-year special edition is fully loaded in terms of the current options sheet, while also offering all of the functional upgrades due out on the 2013 model: 616 horsepower, revised shift and throttle logic, and a retuned exhaust.

The Project Alpha Mac features a host of cosmetic upgrades, too, which set it apart from the, uh, pack. A gloss black finish can be found on the roof, front splitter, rear deck lid and inner surfacing of the wheels, while carbon fiber rear vents and front fender louvers complete the exterior modifications. In the cabin, badging on the driver's door identifies the model, and a host of "Project Alpha" branding hammers the message home.

The expected retail price for the MP4-12C Project Alpha is around $335,000, though 4 of the 6 examples have already been spoken for.

Michele Shapiro, Public Relations Manager for McLaren North America, tells Autoblog "These are cars commissioned by our Chicago dealer in response to customer demand using options from the existing McLaren Special Operations catalogue." Shapiro continues, "MSO offers a specialization service that varies from trim and bodywork changes - as witnessed by this car - to a whole new car, for example the X-1 project recently shown at The Quail in Monterey, California."
McLaren MP4-12C 'Project Alpha' cars being built for Windy City rich originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 31 Aug 2012 14:15:00 EST.
Our old pal Jonny Lieberman gets to have all the fun. The former Autoblog editor now gets to play with multiple supercars at a time for his post at Motor Trend. As part of MT's Best Driver's Car award process, Lieberman and the rest of the magazine's team quarter-mile all of the year's contenders in what they call "The World's Greatest Drag Race." Based on the contenders, we're inclined to agree with their bluster.

While last year's race saw the Nissan GT-R edge out the Ferrari 458 Italia, this year features a few new contenders, including the Lamborghini Aventador and McLaren MP4-12C. Other contestants include the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series, Chevy Camaro ZL1, Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, Subaru BRZ, Jaguar XKR-S and Porsche 911 Carrera S, which - spoiler alert - actually won the Best Driver's Car award this year. Oh, and the updated version of Nissan's GT-R makes a repeat appearance, but no Ferraris are in the field this year.

A special thanks should go out to the Subaru BRZ. It was so far behind the competition that it provided many of the wide-angle shots that captured the whole rest of the field. The straight line is not the forte of a 200-horsepower drift-o-matic, but a fourth place finish in this year's Best Driver's Car competition is a mighty feat for this seemingly outmatched sports car.

The biggest competition in this drag race will be from the new Aventador and the MP4-12C. Do they have enough to take on a new Godzilla? You're just going to have to scroll down to find out. And make sure to stick around for the closing credits to hear each one of these contenders rev their engine in a sweet mechanical symphony.
Continue reading Motor Trend returns with The World's Greatest Drag Race

Motor Trend returns with The World's Greatest Drag Race originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 Aug 2012 12:44:00 EST.
Here's a test of nine cars (see above), only two of which make less than 500 horsepower. Three of these nine cars recorded 0-60 times of less than three seconds, and all the rest but one (the Subaru BRZ), did it in 4.2 or less. Those are impressive stats, to be sure, but huge horsepower figures and stupid-quick acceleration, while certainly amazing in its own way, doesn't necessarily mean the car is a blast to drive - as Motor Trend says, if it were, they'd be testing a bunch of Top Fuel dragsters.

No, the point of throwing together these nine cars was to find out which is the magazine's Best Driver's Car of 2012. As you might imagine, a lot of instrumented testing goes into the equation, but perhaps the most important pieces of information come from the pilots behind the wheel. Again, to quote Motor Trend, "picking the Best Driver's Car, while fun, takes a great deal of time, thought, sweat, and vicious arguing."

The McLaren MP4-12C Spider has officially landed in North America. On display in Monterey, the convertible version of the British supercar boasts a retractable hardtop that can slip from fully up to completely stowed in around 17 seconds. Even with its roof structure stowed, the MP4-12C Spider remains a formidable performance car. The sprint to 60 mph takes just 3.1 seconds, and it tops out at 207 mph. Like its fixed-roof twin, the Spider makes 616 horsepower from a 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

As one Autoblog staffer commented, the car looks good enough to lick. Twice. Delicious? Yes. Cheap? Most certainly not. The McLaren MP4-12C Spider commands a price tag of $265,750, well north of the $241,800 the company asks for the coupe. You can get a closer look at the drophead McLaren by picking through the gallery above.
McLaren MP4-12C Spider touches down in North America originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 17:29:00 EST.
You'd think the McLaren MP4-12C was campaigning in Formula One based on the constant pace of development the supercoupe has benefitted from over its first year. Heading into its second year, it is apparent that the development train won't stop, with the Can-Am Racing concept developed by McLaren GT making its debut during this weekend's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The U.S.-specific concept in McLaren Orange and satin black is based on the 12C GT3 racer, but breaks GT3-class rules to be the "ultimate track car." The bespoke aerodynamic package is said to increase downforce by 30 percent, which we're assuming is over its GT3 sibling. If there's a feature on this car that could make it to production, it's that the engine has been recalibrated to produce 630 horsepower, making this the most powerful MP4-12C to date - just 14 hp beyond the latest road-going car.

The concept is a tribute to the anything-goes days of Can-Am racing in the sixties and seventies and the orange cars fielded by Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme. You can find out more about it in the press release below and we'll bring you photos of the real thing from Pebble Beach.
Continue reading McLaren debuts 12C Can-Am Edition racing concept

McLaren debuts 12C Can-Am Edition racing concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Aug 2012 13:29:00 EST.
The V12 engine is synonymous with supercars, from classics like the Lamborghini Miura and Countach to modern-day screamers like the Ferrari FF and Pagani Huayra. The McLaren F1 - a car universally considered one of the most lust-worthy machines of all time - made use of a 6.1-liter V12 provided by BMW that pushed out 618 naturally aspirated horsepower.

Though not a true successor to the iconic F1, McLaren's more recent MP4-12C makes 617 horsepower from just eight cylinders displacing 3.8 liters, albeit with the help of twin turbochargers. Such power capabilities have prompted McLaren managing director Antony Sheriff to proclaim, "The V12 engine is a thing of the past. The engine belongs in a museum."

We're not quite ready to archive away all thoughts of V12-powered supercars, but Sheriff has a point. V8 engines, even with turbochargers in tow, are easier to package than V12s and have significantly fewer moving parts, which is good for both power and efficiency. Sheriff suggests that even a V6 would be a possibility for future high-performance applications from McLaren.

And so, we leave this question to you, dear readers: Is the V12 engine a thing of the past? Take part in our informal poll below to voice your opinion.

This weekend there will be nine English visitors to the 24 Hours of Spa endurance race, all of them with the surname MP4-12C GT3. The nine cars are being fielded by six teams, one of which has already been victorious in GT races with its McLaren racer.

Have a look at the video below to watch, and more importantly, listen to some highlights of the MP4-12C GT3 so far in its first year of racing. You'll also see the company's chief test driver lay out some of the challenges of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
Continue reading Watch nine McLaren MP4-12Cs get ready for Spa

Watch nine McLaren MP4-12Cs get ready for Spa originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jul 2012 20:00:00 EST. We're a little confused by the move, as the current model already offers plenty of cargo capacity and rear seat room, but we suppose that hasn't stopped manufacturers from spinning off multiple load-lugging bodystyles from the same model before. Autobild says a production version of the Panamera Shooting Brake could bow with the next-generation of the four-door in 2015, depending on how well the CLS Shooting Brake sells.

Meanwhile, website GTSpirit.com is piling on an earlier AutoExpress report that McLaren may be interested in giving the Ferrari FF a run for its money. Rumors indicate a MP4-12C Shooting Brake would still get power from the same turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 found in the Coupe and new Spider model. With 592 horsepower on hand, the hatch could click off the 0-62 mph run in around three seconds. What we're most interested in with this mooted model is packaging - the MP4-12C is a rear mid-engined design, suggesting packaging rear seats or cargo area would be a difficult enterprise. Word has it the machine could arrive as soon as 2013, though that seems unlikely. If that were the case, odds are our spy shooters would have already spotted test mules out and about.
Porsche planning Panamera Shooting Brake, McLaren mulling one, too originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Jul 2012 11:30:00 EST.
McLaren has given the world a better look at its MP4-12C Spider with a new video and a brace of photographs. The clip shows off some of the convertible's innards before dropping the retractable hardtop in real time. It takes just 17 seconds for the two-piece top to stow itself behind the seats with the car rolling contentedly down the track. As you might expect, it doesn't take long for the test driver to lay into the 616-horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine, frolicking sideways and lighting the rear tires on fire.

While we could do without the overly dramatic background music, we'll certainly never turn down an excuse to watch the Formula One-inspired supercar prance around in its native habitat. There's certainly plenty to love about the MP4-12C Spyder, but if you like it enough to make it yours, you'll need to scratch together $265,750 in a hurry. Check out the full video for yourself below as well as a brief press release.
Continue reading McLaren opens up a bit about new MP4-12C Spider

McLaren opens up a bit about new MP4-12C Spider originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 10:58:00 EST. DAY THREE - THE SNOW BEFORE THE SWEET REWARD

So, yeah, on Day Two there were plenty of opportunities to try all chassis setups and I explored them all. So doing, I spotted those couple of things that could use work in the future. But I honestly have to say I was falling ever more under the spell of this car.

Almost immediately out of the night's stay in Annecy, the roads started climbing. This time of year is generally considered by most to be the warm season, but it quickly became cold and, toward the crest of Aravis Pass at near 5,000 feet, it was snowing.

Naturally, this was a text book opportunity for testing the Winter settings of both the Handling and Powertrain knobs on the McLaren console, and they succeeded in sucking the potential drama right out of the slippery proceedings. The eased-up feel of the ProActive chassis control together with the meted out progression of the throttle map soon urged me to carry much more speed through this whole white affair than I had thought possible as I was foolishly driving up into it.
Continue reading 1,000 miles in the McLaren MP4-12C: Day Three

1,000 miles in the McLaren MP4-12C: Day Three originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jul 2012 11:57:00 EST. DAY TWO - THE FASTER CURVES OVER HILL AND VALLEY

If the first day was a warm-up just to get us to the good stuff in central France, Day Two of my McLaren MP4-12C odyssey was one type of pure sports car touring pleasure. The sun was everywhere, the roads were pure entertainment, and the five test cars glowed through the daylight hours.

I'm not talking about encountering a wild series of hairpins, mind you, but rather higher speed roads nonetheless filled with satisfying curves and stunning countryside. First, however, right at the start of the day's driving leg, I had a stop at the former grand prix circuit Reims-Gueux.

This more or less 7.8-km long (4.8-mile) circuit was extremely fast and therefore dangerous, given that in its earlier layout before 1951 it was essentially a triangle with three sharp right-handers and three very long straights to get you into trouble quickly should something go wrong. From 1954 through its closure in 1972, the circuit was reconfigured to an even faster 8.3 kms (5.2 mi). The main straight is nowadays actually the busy two-lane highway RN31 and the entire grandstand is still there on one side, the well-kept pit area on the other. Here and there around the pit structure is stenciled a beautiful sentiment: "Memoire des pilotes, respect du site." France is a nation not unknown for its abundant graffiti, but there is none of it to be seen here.
Continue reading 1,000 miles in the McLaren MP4-12C: Day Two

1,000 miles in the McLaren MP4-12C: Day Two originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Jul 2012 11:57:00 EST.
