We wanted to play this one straight, but since it involves Fast & Furious 6 we just couldn't figure out how. Alfa Romeo is touting the role of the Guilietta in the next episode of car guys and gals versus bad guys and gals, and the now-Europe-inclusive franchise is using the post-stunt vehicles in its advertising. Well, we might add.

We'll let the breathy, exclamatory press release below speak for itself, along with the trailer in which you get to see the "modified" Giulietta demonstrating the textbook technique for pulling down an Antonov cargo plane at take-off speed. You'll find a very Italian set of high-res images above.
Continue reading Alfa Romeo Guilietta to star in Fast & Furious 6 [w/video]

Alfa Romeo Guilietta to star in Fast & Furious 6 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 May 2013 09:28:00 EST.
French director Claude LeLouch made a film called C'etait un Rendezvous that featured a car being driven through the streets of Paris at dawn, by someone who would not stop for any reason - not lights, not cars, nothing. And the whole thing was done in one take. When it was shown in 1976 the public outrage caused it to be banned. Those are the facts. The rest, 36 years later - since LeLouch wouldn't ever reveal who drove or what he (or she) was driving - is still myth, legend and Wikipedia supposition.

The mythology is still so potent that a search on YouTube will bring up the movie itself, the making of, and a ton of videos about the movie or made in homage to it, like this one by Lamborghini. Fitting that it is no longer relegated to the small screen with a Blu-ray release courtesy of the UK's Spirit Level Film.

The launch of the home version is accompanied by a contest that will see someone getting a Ferrari for a weekend and a driving club membership. If you watch it, you'll find the film itself is almost just as entertaining, and Hunger TV has a longer piece on its background. There's a trailer for it just below along with a press release announcing the Blu-ray edition.
Continue reading Cʼétait un Rendezvous coming to Blu-ray [w/video]

Cʼétait un Rendezvous coming to Blu-ray [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Jan 2013 10:44:00 EST.
It's been nearly a year since Flyin' Miata took two cars to the Targa Newfoundland. As you may recall, I got to tag along and do my best to get the supercharged Grand Touring entry as lost as possible. While we were there, one very dedicated film crew followed us from stage to stage, thereby documenting our various triumphs and defeats for a feature-length film. Packed with lots of in-stage footage, interviews with crew as well as fans of both Flyin' Miata and the Targa Newfoundland, the show finds itself on footing with the likes of Truth in 24 and From Dust to Glory.

I spend a bit of time on screen trying to explain what it's like to drown under a league of time-speed-distance calculations, but don't let that be a deterrent. The movie does a stellar job of conveying exactly what it's like to compete in one of the most unique motorsports endeavors on the planet. You can check out the preview for Racing the Rock below or head over to Flyin' Miata to purchase your DVD copy. Keep an eye out for it to show up on iTunes and BluRay later down the line.
Continue reading Flyin' Miata gets the documentary treatment

Flyin' Miata gets the documentary treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Aug 2012 18:39:00 EST.
A new documentary is setting out to discern exactly where Batman gets his wonderful toys - more specifically, the Batmobile. The film will feature interviews with notable Batman movie directors including Chris Nolan, Joel Schumacher and Tim Burton, as well as actors like Christian Bale and even Adam West. From the looks of things, the documentary delves into every aspect of the Batmobile's evolution, from the early comics to the animated series and everything in between. With plenty of in-movie footage and words from stunt drivers and creators like George Barris, this looks to be the final word on epic transportation in Gotham City.

Visitors to this year's Comic-Con were treated to a special preview of the film, though the rest of us will have to wait until the holiday season to get a hold of either the digital download or a Blu-ray copy. In the meantime, you can check out a pretty nifty trailer for the Batmobile documentary below.
Continue reading Official Batmobile documentary cometh

Official Batmobile documentary cometh originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Jul 2012 19:58:00 EST.
Lee Child's novels about the fictional former military MP Jack Reacher are ready to hit the odeon, and they'll be coming with Tom Cruise as the title character. We should know by now better than to compare movies to their source books, and this looks like another reason not to: the literary Reacher is six-foot, five-inch, 210-250 pounds, the 50-year-old Cruise... isn't. Reacher likes silence, Cruise likes the pithy line; Reacher isn't a good runner, Cruise will undoubtedly showcase his sprinting skills.

One difference that might work out for us, though, is that whereas Jack Reacher doesn't have a driver's license and isn't a very good driver in the books - he hitchhikes or takes a bus to the action, mostly - Cruise's take drives a sweetly red Chevrolet Chevelle SS, and judging by this just-released trailer, he does so through anything and anyone. Scroll down to watch Cruise and the prominently featured Chevy muscle car.
Continue reading New Tom Cruise Jack Reacher trailer features Chevelle SS

New Tom Cruise Jack Reacher trailer features Chevelle SS originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Jul 2012 12:30:00 EST.
It's official: Need for Speed is going to be a movie, and it's been "fast-tracked" to arrive in theaters in 2014. Paramount-owned Dreamworks had been talking to Electronic Arts about a cinematic treatment of the video game franchise, and the two were able to close a deal. The script is ready, penned by George Gatin, the brother of Real Steel screenwriter John Gatin.

The movie is based on the entire NFS franchise, not one particular series. So what can you expect? According to the love-fest press release, you'll get "a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise," which makes it sound like there'll be Lamborghinis, Nobles and Shelbys driven by middle-aged dudes with mustaches and huge sunglasses, and at least one afro.

A more accurate synopsis might be from a commenter at Joystiq, who wrote, "It's going to have the live-action sex doll disguised as a female cop, the snarky white guy who is the fashionabl[e] anti-hero, the token black sidekick and the bad guy who has no idea he's going to become a good guy. Oh, and hip-hop music, hip-hop music everywhere."

A potential saving grace is that it's being directed by Scott Waugh, who is just off doing the restrained and very dramatic Special Ops flick Act of Valor. A definite saving grace is that EA is letting fans suggest cars for the film cars on EA's Facebook page. Scroll down for a press release on the big-screen NFS coming your way.
Continue reading Dreamworks will make Need for Speed film

Dreamworks will make Need for Speed film originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 09:58:00 EST. Farmer, car dealer, Le Mans winner, sports-car maker, businessman and tuner Carroll Shelby passsed away on May 11. To honor his contribution to the numerous segments of the auto industry he impacted, cable network Velocity will be airing a three-hour, three-part miniseries on Sunday, May 20.

Called "King of the Road: Carroll Shelby," each hour-long episode will chronicle an era in Shelby's life: his journey from a Texas farm to the top step at Le Mans and building the Cobra; his partnership with Ford and the Mustang GT350; and the road that car followed into becoming the Ford Shelby GT500.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of appropriate ages, your requisite dose of big-screen fast driving is here. And it looks pretty darn funny, too.

The movie in question is called Hit and Run. It was written and directed by Dax Shepard, who also stars in the film alongside such notables as Bradley Cooper, Tom Arnold, a couple of girls named Kristen, a custom '67 Lincoln Continental hot rod and a 700-horsepower off-road racing buggy. The comedy (not to be confused with the 1924, 1938, 1957, 1959, 1966, 1975, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 or 2011 movies of the same name) centers around a guy whose past as a bank-robbing getaway driver comes back to haunt him, forcing him and his girlfriend to hit the road.

It tickles us in all the right places, but we'll let you judge for yourself from the trailer down below. Look for it at local theaters from August 24.
Continue reading Hit and Run is speeding towards a theater near you

Hit and Run is speeding towards a theater near you originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 May 2012 18:59:00 EST.
Rally driving is so reliably mesmerizing that we never lack for viewers when we post rallying footage, especially when raw engine noises accompany the raw talent. Yet we rarely come across videos that take a deeper look at who races, the private lives of privateers and the urge to 'run what you brung' through quiet forests with few spectators and less money. Motorsports filmmaker Matt Johnston wants to change that.

Johnston has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for Easier Said than Done, a full-length feature on what might be the dirtiest side of rallying - finding the money and staying in the game. He isn't trying to fund the whole project itself, he says it's going to happen anyway. What he wants is more capital to hire equipment and crew.

Audi took the NFL Films crew to the 2008 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and with the footage gathered created the rather excellent documentary Truth in 24 (it's still free to view on iTunes and YouTube). It turns out Audi took a crew to last year's race as well, and soon we'll be treated to the sequel, Truth in 24 II.

We'll assume Audi had no idea how exciting that race would end up being, with Allan McNish in one of three R18 Ultras flipping out - literally - just two hours in, and a second Audi crashing out six hours later. After a battle of fuel, tires and pit stops the fight with the Peugeot 908s went to the last lap, making the 2011 race the fourth closest Le Mans run in 79 editions.

A forum member at Ten-Tenths said "The film should be finalised over the next 8 weeks" and that it will deal much more with the race than the backstory. If that timing is correct, it should come just in time to get us ready for this year's running.
Audi reveals Truth in 24 II is coming originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 09:33:00 EST.
We're inching closer to the December 21 release date of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Based on Stieg Larsson's global best-seller, the film looks to be just the kind of gritty perfection you'll need to wash the holiday cheer from your mouth. Bike Exif recently chatted with Justin Kell of Glory Motor Works in Los Angeles, the shop responsible for crafting Lisbeth Salander's bikes used in the film. While the studio wanted the anti-heroine to have a modern motorcycle, Kell pushed to give the character a bike a 20-something could actually afford, creating a wicked late '60s Honda CB350 custom for her instead.

Can we get a round of applause for this gentleman?

Kell and Glory Motor Works whipped up a prototype bike to demonstrate to the studio that an older machine could be just as reliable as its newer counterpart, and after getting the go-ahead, the shop had just 30 days to find and build three identical bikes. The crew sourced three low-mile, original CB350s, then stripped and powder-coated every metal part accordingly. New clutches, brakes, wiring harnesses and fasteners were used on all three machines, and each engine was torn down to its bare innards before being cleaned and reassembled.

In order to handle the rigors of movie life, the bikes were also given larger, sealed batteries along with an upgraded charging and starting system. Head over to Bike Exif for a closer look at the motorcycles themselves, and hit the jump to check out the film's trailer.
Continue reading Building the bikes of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo [w/video]

Building the bikes of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 11 Dec 2011 18:01:00 EST. In a world where physics holds no sway, one cop is ready to take on corrupt politicians and the mobsters that pay them off... or something. Honestly, we don't care about the plot to Singham - a Bollywood remake of the 2010 Tamil film of the same name. What we do enjoy is watching two Mahindra SUVs playing bit parts in an action-adventure that's one part Lethal Weapon and two parts Naked Gun. If nothing else, the lead character is inspiring a last minute revision to our Super Troopers Halloween costume. Check out the absolute best part of the film after the jump.
Continue reading Trailer for Bollywood's Singham flips our lids

Trailer for Bollywood's Singham flips our lids originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 31 Oct 2011 19:43:00 EST. Those words came from Tom Henderson with GM communications.

Buzz that GM would step past the typical product placement role and into full-blown financial support of a film hit the wires late Tuesday evening. A report from New York Magazine indicated that Guy Ritchie may be helming the project with Brad Pitt serving as the lead talent. Of course, that same report also mentioned Ben Stiller as a possible star as well. Those sound like two very, very different movies.

While we're fine with a remake of Cannonball Run, we're a little apprehensive about what could amount to a two-hour long advertisement for GM metal. No one likes watching a movie where every main vehicle is from one brand or another, especially when the film specifically focuses on an illicit race. Who wants to see a Spark square off against an Equinox?
GM denies rumors of bankrolling Cannonball Run redux originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Oct 2011 16:27:00 EST.
We know the feeling. You watch a great movie, and then you want more. That's how trilogies are born. Unfortunately, that won't be possible with Asif Kapadia's celebrated documentary Senna, but that doesn't mean we can't have some more racing flicks in the pipeline.

One of the most promising is a project undertaken by Ron Howard that will look at the legendary 1978 Formula One World Championship, in which Niki Lauda suffered a heavy, fiery crash at the Nürburgring only to come back and challenge James Hunt for the title.

Now we've received word on who will star under Howard's direction: Lauda will be played by Daniel Brühl (who you may recognize from Inglorious Basterds and The Bourne Ultimatum), while Chris Hemsworth (he of Thor fame, pictured above) will play Hunt. Romanian-German actress Alexandra Maria Lara will also star in the film that will (hopefully) make us forget all about Sly Stallone's Driven and challenge the likes of Grand Prix and Le Mans for space on the list of the best racing films of all time.
Ron Howard's Rush gears up to relive Lauda/Hunt showdown originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 10:58:00 EST.
Le Mans. Grand Prix. Senna. Even Days of Thunder. Legendary racing films all, but our list is preparing to grow by one more epic saga played out on the silver screen.

That project, as we reported last month, is set to focus on the battle between Niki Lauda and James Hunt in the 1978 Formula 1 World Championship, wherein Lauda suffered a devastating fiery crash at the Nürburgring, coming back to challenge Hunt in one of the closest title fights in racing history. The screenplay's been titled Rush, and now it's got a director.

Paul Greengrass of Bourne trilogy fame was reportedly interested in taking on the project, but the latest reports indicate that Ron Howard will be picking up the bull horn instead. The child actor-turned-director has been responsible for such legendary films as Cocoon, Apollo 13 and Frost/Nixon.

While Howard works on that project, Steven Spielberg and his Dreamworks production company are reportedly considering a second film that would focus in on the life of James Hunt, the unabashed embodiment of male bravado who fought Lauda for the title down to the wire.
Ron Howard signs on to direct Lauda biopic Rush originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 18:29:00 EST.
Cars weren't actually the only machines with smiles in Cars. The Disney/Pixar animated feature that's about to spawn its second installment also included trucks, trains, combine harvesters and even helicopters with anthropomorphic faces. But now Disney is planning on taking things one step farther with a new movie called, simply enough, Planes.

The film's not due for release until 2013, and when it does, it will buzz the theaters and land directly on DVD. But to give us a taste of what's yet to come, Disney has released a little teaser video, hinting at the story of a prop plane trying to make it in a jet's world. Looks entertaining enough, but we'll let you judge for yourself from the Top Gun-esque trailer after the jump.
Continue reading Planes trailer previews Disney tail-spinning off Cars franchise

Planes trailer previews Disney tail-spinning off Cars franchise originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 10:29:00 EST.
Part of what made the The Driver, the series of BMW films with Clive Owen, so compelling was that it was well written, it was underplayed, and as far as action films went it didn't obliterate believability. The laconic Owen was able to sell hopped-up adventures with his relaxed delivery of cutting lines, and it was credulous that a driver-for-hire made his living in a 5 Series.

The Mercedes-Benz movie Drive & Seek, however, throws all of that away. A promotional piece for the C-Class Coupe, it's slick, utterly good looking, outrageously over-the-top, and goofy in every way possible. The only reason we know it's not a Michael Bay film is that nothing explodes, otherwise it prays at his altar: a hot woman in a bathing suit (Kate Nauta, from The Transporter 2), hot women in white skinsuits robbing a bank, gunfire in an expensive suit, an absurd car chase... and some other stuff. If that's your bag, there's 9:25 of it in the video after the jump.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz Drive & Seek action movie stars C-Class, scantily clad bank robbers

Mercedes-Benz Drive & Seek action movie stars C-Class, scantily clad bank robbers originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 May 2011 19:58:00 EST.
With the Senna biopic now streaming to television sets everywhere, reports are coming in that another film is undergoing production that focuses on Niki Lauda.

The Austrian driver is a three-time Formula One World Champion and rated as one of the best of all time. His career spanned over the 1970s and 1980s, driving most notably for Ferrari, then coming out of retirement to score his third world championship with McLaren - a move that Michael Schumacher surely took to heart.

The film reportedly focuses on the 1976 championship, when Lauda crashed at the Nürburgring, losing his right ear and suffering severe burns to his face. He returned - spoiler alert! - just six weeks later having missed two grands prix, and only to lose the title to James Hunt by just one point.

The screenplay is reportedly being written by Peter Morgan, best known for his work on Frost/Nixon and The Queen. They're apparently still hunting for director and producers, but as for the actor who will play the lead role, Lauda himself reportedly quipped, "Anyone who is 25 or 26 with his right ear burnt off and dreams to be made up to look like me can start making plans."
Niki Lauda lines up on the grid for his own biopic originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 May 2011 18:32:00 EST. He's just finished filming the fourth Mission: Impossible movie, is currently filming a Hansel & Gretel movie before he stars in The Avengers and possibly the next Bourne movie as well. But a new film in its embryonic stage is arguably of the greatest interest to car nuts.

According to reports, Renner is working on a new biopic focusing on the legendary Steve McQueen. In addition to starring as the King of Cool himself, Renner is reportedly involved in the film's production, along with Greg Shapiro (who produced The Hurt Locker) and others. Writer/director James Gray is reportedly basing his screenplay on Marshall Terrill's definitive tomes "Portrait of an American Rebel" and "The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon".

What this means for Brad Pitt, who has long been rumored to be working on a McQueen flick, remains to be seen, but if Renner's project can channel any the talent he's displayed so far (and given that the actor's name roughly translates from German as "racer"), we could have a winner on our hands.

Three of the qualities that Senna brought to F1: massive talent in good conditions that became ethereal talent in the wet; total devotion to winning; and an intimate connection to God.

It would be a challenge to contain the full and complete life of even a moderately interesting man in just 104 cinematic minutes. If a man has lived in more than two cities, held more than three jobs and dated more than four women, the gift of that man's life probably can't be wrapped in an hour and four minutes of celluloid. Those paltry numbers don't even form any kind of template: Franz Kafka didn't merely spend almost all of his life in Prague, he spent almost all of it living in his parents' house and working a single job. Good luck fitting his tale into just 6,240 seconds.

So how, then, is one to condense the days of Ayrton Senna da Silva, the Formula One pilot whose talent ignited observers, whose turmoil ignited ratings, and whose love for his country ignited Brazil itself? Director Asif Kapadia attempts it in Senna, and while it could not do everything, what it does reveal about dreaming and stubbornness and tenacity and fallibility and talent and death is something you will certainly wish to see.
