If you're trying to weather the lousy economy by being fiscally responsible and not splurging on crap that you absolutely do not need, please stop reading now. Because if you like movies, cars, and movie-cars especially, the wall candy offered by MovieCarPosters.com will have you reaching for your wallet before you're halfway through the photo gallery.

These posters are ridiculously cool. Each combines a vehicle silhouette with iconography and color themes pulled from the films and television shows said rides starred in.

In addition to the stuff you'd expect to see, like the BTTF DeLorean, KITT, and the Batmobile (Barris, Furst, Animated, and Tumbler, at that), you'll find killer posters paying tribute to films like Better Off Dead, Big Trouble in Little China, and The Cannonball Run (two varieties), plus TV shows as varied as Arrested Development, Initial D, and Firefly. Gamers, you're represented as well. Even Bronies get some love.

You can browse all the designs in the gallery above. Can't figure any out? Head over to MovieCarPosters.com, where each has a signature quote listed as a hint. (Face it, you'll be going there anyway to place an order.)

What's great is that there's room for so many additions to the series in the future. For example, we're suggesting that Kojak's Buick, Priest's Eldorado from Superfly, and the APC from Aliens all get posterized.

Any suggestions of your own? Sound off in the comments. Likewise, if you place an order, let us know which posters you picked up.

UPDATE: We've discovered that these movie-car posters appear to be more than heavily inspired by original artwork from graphic designer Dean Walton, whose work can be seen and purchased at his Mr. Shabba! Shop. In addition to movie car posters, Walton also created an 'Iconic Racing' and 'Japanese Masters' series.
Prepare to spend all your money on these movie-car posters [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 12 Feb 2012 20:00:00 EST.
As we revealed last month, the theme for this year's LA Design Challenge is Hollywood - more specifically, what the silver screen's next iconic automobile might be. For some reason, this year's challenge features a lot fewer entrants than year's past. In fact, half of the field comes from Daimler, with concepts submitted by Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Smart. The other three competitors are Honda, Hyundai and Subaru.

Their challenge was to dream up the next DeLorean, Highland Green Ford Mustang or Black Audi S8 that will capture the attention of moviegoers in the year 2050. Each entrant picked a different style of film; everything from westerns to thrillers to fairy tales and vampire movies is represented.

We've collected all six entrants, including descriptions of a blockbuster Hollywood storyline that goes along with each vehicle, after the jump. Check them out and then vote for your favorite in our poll. We'll see if the Autoblog community was right on November 17 when the winner is announced at the 2011 LA Auto Show.

Richard Hammond and James May - two of the stars of Top Gear in the UK - have teamed up to film a short trailer on YouTube for an upcoming DVD based on the television show. Naturally, the video revolves around cars, but there's a unique twist: the video is said to celebrate the most memorable automotive moments in cinema history.

We imagine there will be more than a little bit of James Bond action in the film along with a slew of British machinery... not to mention explosions, gunfire and beautiful camera footage. And, judging from the video you'll see after the break, there will be no shortage of tire smoke and that hard-to-quantify British humour we all know and love. See for yourself.
Continue reading Hammond and May tease Top Gear at the Movies

Hammond and May tease Top Gear at the Movies originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 19:59:00 EST.
You don't have to be born in the 1960s or 1970s to be able to recognize the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard and the Pontiac Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit. These old school four-wheeled stars seem to transcend demographics thanks to the miles of film that show the orange 1969 Dodge Charger and the jet-black 1977 Pontiac Trans Am performing seemingly impossible stunts.

The folks at Hot Rod magazine are obviously hip to this fact, and they put together a fun video in tribute of the instantly recognizable duo. Hit the jump to watch on as Sam Young and James Smith replace Bo Duke and The Bandit for a bit of dirt-road shenanigans in a pair of otherwise well cared for classics. We're not so sure we'd call it the best chase scene ever, but it sure looks like a lot of fun.

More importantly, which of these two cars would you rather own? Have your say in our poll below.

1985 Porsche 944 Batmobile Tribute - Click above for high-res image gallery

This author will be the first to admit that he's not exactly overflowing with love for the Porsche 944, but don't expect any amused looks from this camp about seeing this car degraded into a stumpy rendition of Tim Burton's Batmobile. Sadly, that's just what seems to have happened with this particular 1985 944. According to the seller, the car still boasts the stock 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a five-speed manual cog box, so you won't be outpacing baddies anytime soon. A NOS Sniper system has been installed on the car, but thankfully, it's never been used. We're guessing hitting the go-go juice would be a heckuva lot of fun - but probably just once.

A few of the movie car's more outlandish traits have made their way to this poor Porsche, including those wild batwing fins and a pair of replica .223 machine guns that light up for effect. The car does feature the kind of sound system you'd need to drown out the riotous laughter of those in traffic around you, so that's a plus. The seller says that the front fenders need to be finished, and as such, you can get this puppy for a song. Asking price is a mere $6,500. You can check out the full listing here. Thanks for the tip, Kris!

Let's take a stroll back through time to an era when droves of people, young and old, would willingly pay to watch bad actors and improbable cars join forces to fight evil on the silver screen. No, we're not talking about 2007, nor Michael Bay's Transformers. We're interested in something altogether more pure - 1986's The Wraith. If you've never seen the film, you're missing out on a piece of cinematic car history that uses plot only as a vessel for plot holes. But never mind that. The star of the show is none other than the 1984 Dodge M4S Concept. Charlie Sheen is there, too.

Using its mid-ship, twin-turbo 2.2-liter Cosworth four-cylinder engine, the newly christened Wraith is no longer a prisoner of the show circuit. Using state of the art special effects, the car spends the length of the film running down gang members and restoring order to society.

And now it's for sale. After being found in pieces, some loving soul has taken the time to restore The Wraith to its former glory, and it's now available for sale in Kansas. According to the site, the seller is open to entertaining offers. Take our advice: don't low ball the guy. The Wraith just might come for your immortal soul.

One of the most recognizable movie cars of recent years is being offered up for sale on eBay Motors this week. Austin Powers' "shagadelic" Jaguar E-Type roadster first appeared in the original 1997 picture featuring Mike Myers as the thawed-out British secret agent.

This particular machine was actually used as a promotional vehicle for the first film, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. In addition to the custom paint job, a specially-made red top and red, white and blue interior have been fitted. The car still has the original powertrain, but the listing doesn't include the mileage. If you simply must have the Shaguar, you can make it yours by surrendering the Buy It Now price of $59,900. The current bid of $24,550 sits below the seller's reserve.

Car movies have been big business of late - Transformers, Death Race, The A-Team - which makes it unsurprising that the business of getting cars prepped for movies is becoming even bigger business. The upcoming Green Hornet will use 29 classic Imperials; the third film in The Fast & the Furious series needed 200 cars built and modified; and the fourth installment required 240 rebuilt rides.

The New York Times has a look at the outfit that builds the cars that make us go, "Awesome!" Run by Dennis McCarthy in a shop in Sun Valley, California, his crew of 40 teamsters will grab tens of vehicles from eBay and Craigslist and then work 17-hour days to get them ready to jump, fly, flip, explode, and engage in general badassery. For Fast & Furious, they put that Regal GNX body on its frame backwards so it would look like a high-speed chase in reverse.

And yes, they're already at work on the fifth episode in the F&F franchise. Head on over to The New York Times for the rest of the story - it's one of the few chop shops we're glad to have around.

George Barris and the 2010 Chevrolet "Spirit" Camaro - Click above for high-res image gallery

If you happen to be in the greater Burbank area this weekend, you might want to swing by Community Chevrolet on Saturday. Legendary car customizer George Barris is scheduled to unveil his latest project - a kustomized 2010 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS RS - by driving the car straight to the dealer himself. Called the "Spirit" Camaro, the car is designed to be affordable for the working class Joe, meaning there aren't any wild power adders under the hood.

Instead, Barris focused on creating a unique exterior for the General Motors muscle car. The hood and front fenders all get a striking paint job in the buyer's choice of either red or yellow, complete with pearl accents. The grille has been swapped for a new three-bar unit designed to give the car a classic feel. The look won't be for everyone, but it could be your only chance to own an original Barris creation. You can order your very own through your local Chevrolet dealer, who will contact Community Chevrolet in turn.

Barris made a name for himself by creating some of Hollywood's most iconic cars and trucks. His work took center stage on shows like The Beverly Hillbillies, The Munsters and the original Batman. He even turned out the very first KITT for Knight Rider back before NBC had its way with the concept. So far, there's no word on how many Spirit Camaros will be produced, or how much Barris will want for each one. Stay tuned.

Are these the ultimate performance cars? Maybe not in 0-60 or quarter mile times - although we wouldn't count a few of them out at the dragstrip - but in terms of actually being performers. Some of the random cars and trucks we found at this year's New York Auto Show are perhaps just as famous as their on-screen co-stars of the human variety.

While the A-Team van parked right smack dab in the middle of the entryway was an easy target, we delved a little deeper and found a Mach 5, K.I.T.T., Batmobile, Monkeemobile, and Grandpa Munster's Dragula sitting in a booth in the lower level of the Javits Center. Oh, and your eyes aren't deceiving you...that is the VW Beetle from Uncle Buck that was on eBay last year...just in time for Easter. After the star car turnout at Chicago, this was a nice encore.

When a legitimate Ferrari 250GT Spyder California goes on sale at auction, the ultra-rare droptops can fetch $10 million or more. The are two reasons the 250GT fetches so much cash: because there were fewer than 100 copies made between 1958 and 1963 and because we're talking about a gorgeous Ferrari. Now switch out the legit Ferrari with one of the many replica 250GTs, the payout would likely be so insignificant many auction houses wouldn't bother.

That's almost universally true, but if you're talking about the actual 1961 Ferrari 250GT replica used in the classic John Hughes movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the same rules don't necessarily apply. The one-of-a-kind replica, built off of a far more pedestrian MG platform, is being auctioned off at the Bonhams Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia auction on April 19 at the RAF Museum London. The price tag for a piece of automotive movie history? The auction house is reportedly looking to snag £30,000 to £40,000 ($45,000 to $60,000 in U.S. funds) for the little red ragtop. The fake Ferrari is reportedly ready to be driven, but rumor has it that the replica wasn't even reliable when the movie was being shot back in the mid-80s.

Maybe we're just big fans of the film, but we thought it might go for a bit more - perhaps it would have more potential at a Stateside auction. Either way, we're hoping that whoever just bought Cameron's house (it was up for sale last year) splurges a little and reunites these two. Bonus video footage of both from the movie available after the jump.

Volo Auto Museum collection at Chicago Auto Show - Click above for high-res image gallery

One of the most fun parts of the Chicago Auto Show every year is that Illinois is also host to the Volo Auto Museum. Volo is one of those museum/used car dealerships that always has some of the most entertaining and outrageous cars in its inventory. One of the things they are best known for is their collection of rolling Hollywood memorabilia, and at this year's show, they have rolled out about a dozen vehicles that show off their range of Tinseltown metal.

First up is the Mellow Yellow NASCAR racer that Tom Cruise piloted in Days of Thunder. They even have a monitor running movie clips featuring Cole Trickle beside the very seat he sat in for the filming - and no, it wasn't a booster seat. Next to that is Speed Racer's Mach 5, signed by Kustom Kar King George Barris. That sits alongside one of the General Lee Dodge Chargers from the Dukes of Hazzard movie and a really odd Buick Grand National. The GN is one of the cars that Vin Diesel drove in Fast and Furious 4. It is totally gutted inside and has a wild rear steering system that made us do a double-take.

Across from that is the villain car from The Great Race and the awesomely wacky Turtle Mobile from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Our favorite star car, though - and the one that looks most at home here in Chicago - is the Blues Mobile, driven by one Joliet Jake and one Elwood Blues, a.k.a. "The Blues Brothers." It even has the comically oversized loudspeaker still strapped to the roof. All-in, the Volo display is fun attraction here in Chicago and an example of why this show is always so popular with the public.

Gallery: Volo Museum Hollywood cars at Chicago Auto Show

Live photos copyright (C)2010 Frank Filipponio/Weblogs, Inc.

Chicago 2010: Volo shines the light on some famous movie cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Feb 2010 14:30:00 EST.
One of the most sinister automotive movie characters ever, the tanker-hauling Peterbilt from the seminal Spielberg picture, Duel, is up for auction. Perhaps only a little less evil than the '58 Plymouth in John Carpenter's adaptation of Christine, nearly 40 years have done little to dull this truck's malevolent countenance. The MotoExotica and Manheim event in St. Louis started on Friday, and finishes up today, October 17th.

The 1960 Pete has an overhauled engine, and air and electrical lines on the chassis have been replaced, too, according to the seller. It appears that this truck is the second of three used in the filming of the movie. It's a 1960 Peterbilt 281 made up to look like the 1956 model that was used for most of the scenes. Since that '56 was on its last legs, this truck was its double, and has also appeared in other productions, like a David Lee Roth video. We can't find out if there's a reserve, but it did just come out of a restoration, so it'll likely be well above the $20,000 range that normal 281s seem to trade for. Add in its matching vintage trailer and the movie provenance, which is purportedly documented, and this truck could well go for more money.

For a work vehicle, it's likely pulled its last real load a long time ago. Movie appearances tend to make people all kooky about a vehicle having some sort of added value just because it exists on a few million frames of release print somewhere. Either way, we've found both the movie's trailer and the full feature (they're embedded after the jump), where you can see the Peterbilt in action. Thanks for the tip, Greg.

Among the numerous cobbled-together blue GT-Rs used in Fast & Furious for Paul Walker's character, the strangest one in real life could be this one: a tube-framed buggy with a VW engine. So instead of an RB engine up front, it's got an empty engine bay and a People's Wagon lump in the back, under the trunklid. It was used for jumping and driving down a flight of steps, and it sounds like it's headed to Baja. Not quite life, not quite art, follow the jump to see video.

The Volo Classic Car Museum in Illinois has this pink treat from the movie Uncle Buck for sale. The Funny Bunny is a Volkswagen Bug that was turned into a mouse that, according to the Volo, has been turned into a bunny. Even though it's got a mouse nose, mouse whiskers, mouse eyes, and mouse ears, it has "a buck tooth bumper" and a white, poofy bunny tail -- but it still comes with the pink mouse tail in case you're really set on a rodent.

The car has been restored and is in great running condition, so sayeth the museum's eBay listing. And you don't have to worry about spending money on it, because "people will pay you to attend their events." If you're looking for attention or an "in" for your local Easter parade, look no further.

Gallery: Bunnymobile

[Source: eBay]
eBay Find of the Day is just in time for Easter originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Mar 2009 14:59:00 EST. It costs $305,000, and it is a special car. But we drove one that was even more special. We drove one of the Aston Martins that was in Quantum of Solace, driven by the man who plays The Man. We didn't even have to break into some supermax-like vault-within-a-vault to get to it. Aston Martin delivered it to us for a day of spy play, yet that didn't make the experience any less thrilling. Follow the jump for the story.

Click above for a gallery of the cars that make the movies about cars

We dig the cars in car flicks -- but what about the cars that make the flicks about cars? Looking less like Transformers and more like space junk peddled by the sand people, it's hard to imagine what it takes to turn a regular old car into a mobile studio worthy of Deja Vu (pictured).

The Dukes of Hazzard TV series was barely better than those campy 60s movies, with a scenery film running in the back window of the General Lee during in-car shots. The General Lee from the movie is practically two car lengths longer than what you seen on the screen due to the equipment needed to make realistic rolling footage (and a roll of really bad film). Who'd have thunk it? Have a look at the gallery below, and follow the link to check out a bunch more shots of the rolling sound stages. Thanks for the tip, Brian!

Gallery: Movie Camera Cars

[Source: Oobject]
Lights, camera, throttle: Movie camera cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Sep 2008 20:01:00 EST. All those license plates in movies and TV shows are fake! OK, most are fake. Some apparently are actually legit.

Not only are most of them fake, but someone's gotta make em. That somebody has been CR8APL8, and they have amassed an impressive portfolio of famous Hollywood plates.

Check out this site for some of the more famous, or click here for a PDF of more.

CR8APL8 will even make a custom plate for your car. Yes, they say it's legal to display on the front of cars in states not requiring a front plate, and even then there are loopholes. The key, their FAQ says, is that these plates are not made of metal, which is a federal offense. Instead they're fabricated of federally-favored fiberglass.

Before we get our "AB KICKS S" tag, we're hoping some of you will try it out first. And, sure, we'll take collect calls from whatever county slammer you might find yourself in.

[Source: Hemming's ]
He MKS PL8S 4 HWOOD originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 22 Jul 2007 09:33:00 EST. Flying cars are big, naturally, as are semi-automated machines like the Lexus Tom Cruise drives in Minority Report (on sale at eBay Motors for a Buy it Now price of $76,000) or the Audi featured in I, Robot. CNN is running a cool interactive poll where readers can rank ten pre-selected "future cars" in the order they feel best represents what the car of the future should be like. Personally, I lean more towards Rick Deckard's ride than that of, say, George Jetson. Bruce Willis' cab from The Fifth Element is up there on my list, too. But that's just me. Check out the poll, get your votes in, and feel free to tell us what your faves are in the comments.

[Source: CNN.com]
Geek Alert! But the little French deux chevaux has been named the best James Bond chase car in a new 4Car poll. Piloted by Roger Moore in the classic 1981 film, "For Your Eyes Only", the duck managed to steal the top spot in the poll, which was done as part of an upcoming Jeremy Clarkson special, MPH Show '06.

For those who might not remember, the 2CV wasn't even Roger Moore's first choice. As Bond, he had to abandon his destroyed Lotus Esprit for the bright yellow 2CV to escape hitman Hector Gonzales and his henchmen. The 2CV incomprehensibly out-ran Sean Connery's Aston Martin DB5 from the Goldfinger chase scene. And that classic AM only managed a tie with Pierce Brosnan's destructive tank chase in 1995's Goldeneye. Shame on you, Channel 4 voters.

Clarkson and co-presenter James May will be hosting the live MPH Show '06 event that leads up to the premier of the newest Bond flick, Casino Royale. A live audience of 12,000 is expected at Birmingham's NEC (October 26-29) and London's Earls Court (November 2-5) where they'll see such stupendous sights as "a Ninja fighting a Vauxhall Monaro, a 3D helicopter gun chase and 'Parkour' experts defying gravity by jumping over moving cars." In the wake of Top Gear co-presenter Richard Hammond's recent jet-car crash, it is good to see Jeremy hasn't lost his taste for the fun stuff.

Full top ten list after the jump.

[Source: Channel 4's 4Car]

Continue reading Best Bond chase vehicle a Citroen 2CV?

Best Bond chase vehicle a Citroen 2CV? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Oct 2006 14:54:00 EST.
