Spaceballs hovercraft floats in from obscurity

The Mel Brooks Star Wars send-up Spaceballs may be most memorable for its flying Winnebago, but a hovercraft also features in the hilarious action. Like a lot of movie prop vehicles, the hovercraft that carted Dark Helmet around had no power source of its own (other than a Napoleonic Rick Moranis in some scenes).

The Just a Car Guy blog found the hovercraft in the Justice Brothers Museum, and it turns out that after the movie, this prop became an honest-to-goodness working vehicle much like Lone Star became a prince at the end of the film. Originally built by famous customizer Dean Jeffries in just two weeks, the hovercraft now has a rear-mounted engine and can carry up to eight people in out-of-this-world style. eBay Find of the Day: 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Convertible from The Hangover

Of the many painful moments in The Hangover, watching the cadre of best men destroy a beautiful 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Convertible over the course of the film was perhaps the worst.

Between Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis bouncing the vehicle off of traffic and the sides of a concrete tunnel and allowing a live tiger to chew on the upholstery, this classic piece of German engineering suffered greatly at the hands of the movie's script. But this is Hollywood, where nothing is as it seems. As it turns out, the film used three convertibles and two coupes chopped to look like convertibles for the filming.

One of the convertibles and one coupe received the raw end of most of the damage, leaving three survivors. The two drop tops were then auctioned off for charity, and now one is up for sale on eBay Motors. According to the seller, this vehicle was used for most of the interior filming, and while its cabin was thoroughly destroyed during the making of the movie, it was restored to its original perfection after shooting wrapped. The car is supposedly in solidly operable - but not concours - condition. Looks like a great driver to us. The minimum bid sits at $85,000 with a $95,000 Buy-It-Now price, meaning you're paying a hefty premium for the car's movie provenance. On the Block: Back to the Future III DeLorean up for auction

There are reported to be just three surviving Back to the Future Delorean DMC-12 movie cars left in existence, and only one of those is held in a private collection. Next month, you'll have a chance to take it home. One of the stainless-steel wonders used in Back to the Future III is headed to the Profiles in History auction block. The Icons of Hollywood auction will feature a litany of items from the trilogy, including the vest worn by Michael J. Fox's character Marty McFly and a remote-control hoverboard. This has the makings of the best Halloween costume ever.

According to the auction house, the DMC-12 was used in 1955 drive-in move scene where Marty heads off into the Old West. The vehicle was built specifically for off-road use, though the auction doesn't specify exactly what sort of modifications were made to the gullwing machine to handle bouncing through the desert sand. The auction house expects the vehicle to roll away with a winning bid between $400,000 and $600,000. Hit the jump for the full press release.

A car alleging to be the original hero car from Ian Fleming's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has wound up on eBay, apparently in running condition. According to the seller, the film's production manager insisted that the hero car be a fully-functional road car, not just a mock up.

To that end, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang sports a 3.0-liter Ford V6 and automatic transmission, mounted in a one-off ladder frame. The body features a handmade aluminum hood and red and white cedar boattail rear. Unfortunately, none of Chitty's magical powers made it to the road car, meaning this thing won't fly.

The seller claims that all the brasswork on the car came from actual Edwardian-era cars, to make sure Chitty Chitty Bang Bang looked as true-to-life as possible. That sounds like a lot of work to go into a car for Hollywood, even a hero car.

The seller provides a convincing back story on the car, but there's no official documentation shown or offered. This is no-doubt a well-built car, and very well could be the original from the movie, but at a starting bid of $1,000,000, we'd need a lot of confirmation before pulling the trigger. Not that we could afford it anyway... Thanks for the tip, Matt!

A 1971 Plymouth Barracuda is a wonderful sight to behold. However, for the producers of Furious 5 (the upcoming installment in the Fast and Furious franchise), it's apparently not quite furious enough. How do they solve the problem? By stuffing a 636 Hemi under the hood and attaching a blower larger than Vin Diesel's impression of himself.

The car features five-point harnesses, leather-lined race seats and a custom dash signed by Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Justin Lin. Based on the "Frankencuda" Muscle Machine diecast toy, this custom 'Cuda is a fantasy car come to life.

This author will be the first to admit that he's not exactly overflowing with love for the Porsche 944, but don't expect any amused looks from this camp about seeing this car degraded into a stumpy rendition of Tim Burton's Batmobile. Sadly, that's just what seems to have happened with this particular 1985 944. According to the seller, the car still boasts the stock 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a five-speed manual cog box, so you won't be outpacing baddies anytime soon. A NOS Sniper system has been installed on the car, but thankfully, it's never been used. We're guessing hitting the go-go juice would be a heckuva lot of fun - but probably just once.

A few of the movie car's more outlandish traits have made their way to this poor Porsche, including those wild batwing fins and a pair of replica .223 machine guns that light up for effect. The car does feature the kind of sound system you'd need to drown out the riotous laughter of those in traffic around you, so that's a plus. The seller says that the front fenders need to be finished, and as such, you can get this puppy for a song. Asking price is a mere $6,500. You can check out the full listing here. Avenge the fallen with The Wraith movie car

Let's take a stroll back through time to an era when droves of people, young and old, would willingly pay to watch bad actors and improbable cars join forces to fight evil on the silver screen. No, we're not talking about 2007, nor Michael Bay's Transformers. We're interested in something altogether more pure - 1986's The Wraith. If you've never seen the film, you're missing out on a piece of cinematic car history that uses plot only as a vessel for plot holes. But never mind that. The star of the show is none other than the 1984 Dodge M4S Concept. Charlie Sheen is there, too.

Using its mid-ship, twin-turbo 2.2-liter Cosworth four-cylinder engine, the newly christened Wraith is no longer a prisoner of the show circuit. Using state of the art special effects, the car spends the length of the film running down gang members and restoring order to society.

And now it's for sale. After being found in pieces, some loving soul has taken the time to restore The Wraith to its former glory, and it's now available for sale in Kansas. According to the site, the seller is open to entertaining offers. Take our advice: don't low ball the guy. The Wraith just might come for your immortal soul.

One of the most recognizable movie cars of recent years is being offered up for sale on eBay Motors this week. Austin Powers' "shagadelic" Jaguar E-Type roadster first appeared in the original 1997 picture featuring Mike Myers as the thawed-out British secret agent.

This particular machine was actually used as a promotional vehicle for the first film, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. In addition to the custom paint job, a specially-made red top and red, white and blue interior have been fitted. The car still has the original powertrain, but the listing doesn't include the mileage.If you simply must have the Shaguar, you can make it yours by surrendering the Buy It Now price of $59,900. The current bid of $24,550 sits below the seller's reserve.

Are these the ultimate performance cars? Maybe not in 0-60 or quarter mile times - although we wouldn't count a few of them out at the dragstrip - but in terms of actually being performers. Some of the random cars and trucks we found at this year's New York Auto Show are perhaps just as famous as their on-screen co-stars of the human variety.

While the A-Team van parked right smack dab in the middle of the entryway was an easy target, we delved a little deeper and found a Mach 5, K.I.T.T., Batmobile, Monkeemobile, and Grandpa Munster's Dragula sitting in a booth in the lower level of the Javits Center. Oh, and your eyes aren't deceiving you...that is the VW Beetle from Uncle Buck that was on eBay last year...just in time for Easter. After the star car turnout at Chicago, this was a nice encore.

When a legitimate Ferrari 250GT Spyder California goes on sale at auction, the ultra-rare droptops can fetch $10 million or more. The are two reasons the 250GT fetches so much cash: because there were fewer than 100 copies made between 1958 and 1963 and because we're talking about a gorgeous Ferrari. Now switch out the legit Ferrari with one of the many replica 250GTs, the payout would likely be so insignificant many auction houses wouldn't bother.

That's almost universally true, but if you're talking about the actual 1961 Ferrari 250GT replica used in the classic John Hughes movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the same rules don't necessarily apply. The one-of-a-kind replica, built off of a far more pedestrian MG platform, is being auctioned off at the Bonhams Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia auction on April 19 at the RAF Museum London. The price tag for a piece of automotive movie history? The auction house is reportedly looking to snag £30,000 to £40,000 ($45,000 to $60,000 in U.S. funds) for the little red ragtop. The fake Ferrari is reportedly ready to be driven, but rumor has it that the replica wasn't even reliable when the movie was being shot back in the mid-80s.

Maybe we're just big fans of the film, but we thought it might go for a bit more - perhaps it would have more potential at a Stateside auction. Either way, we're hoping that whoever just bought Cameron's house (it was up for sale last year) splurges a little and reunites these two. Chicago 2010: Volo shines the light on some famous movie cars

One of the most fun parts of the Chicago Auto Show every year is that Illinois is also host to the Volo Auto Museum. Volo is one of those museum/used car dealerships that always has some of the most entertaining and outrageous cars in its inventory. One of the things they are best known for is their collection of rolling Hollywood memorabilia, and at this year's show, they have rolled out about a dozen vehicles that show off their range of Tinseltown metal.

First up is the Mellow Yellow NASCAR racer that Tom Cruise piloted in Days of Thunder. They even have a monitor running movie clips featuring Cole Trickle beside the very seat he sat in for the filming - and no, it wasn't a booster seat. Next to that is Speed Racer's Mach 5, signed by Kustom Kar King George Barris. That sits alongside one of the General Lee Dodge Chargers from the Dukes of Hazzard movie and a really odd Buick Grand National. The GN is one of the cars that Vin Diesel drove in Fast and Furious 4. It is totally gutted inside and has a wild rear steering system that made us do a double-take.

Across from that is the villain car from The Great Race and the awesomely wacky Turtle Mobile from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Our favorite star car, though - and the one that looks most at home here in Chicago - is the Blues Mobile, driven by one Joliet Jake and one Elwood Blues, a.k.a. "The Blues Brothers." It even has the comically oversized loudspeaker still strapped to the roof. All-in, the Volo display is fun attraction here in Chicago and an example of why this show is always so popular with the public.

Auction find: Duel Peterbilt for beating up on Valiants

One of the most sinister automotive movie characters ever, the tanker-hauling Peterbilt from the seminal Spielberg picture, Duel, is up for auction. Perhaps only a little less evil than the '58 Plymouth in John Carpenter's adaptation of Christine, nearly 40 years have done little to dull this truck's malevolent countenance. The MotoExotica and Manheim event in St. Louis started on Friday, and finishes up today, October 17th.

The 1960 Pete has an overhauled engine, and air and electrical lines on the chassis have been replaced, too, according to the seller. It appears that this truck is the second of three used in the filming of the movie. It's a 1960 Peterbilt 281 made up to look like the 1956 model that was used for most of the scenes. Since that '56 was on its last legs, this truck was its double, and has also appeared in other productions, like a David Lee Roth video. We can't find out if there's a reserve, but it did just come out of a restoration, so it'll likely be well above the $20,000 range that normal 281s seem to trade for. Add in its matching vintage trailer and the movie provenance, which is purportedly documented, and this truck could well go for more money.

For a work vehicle, it's likely pulled its last real load a long time ago. Movie appearances tend to make people all kooky about a vehicle having some sort of added value just because it exists on a few million frames of release print somewhere. GTR-bodied buggy from Fast & Furious -- Click above to watch video

Among the numerous cobbled-together blue GT-Rs used in Fast & Furious for Paul Walker's character, the strangest one in real life could be this one: a tube-framed buggy with a VW engine. So instead of an RB engine up front, it's got an empty engine bay and a People's Wagon lump in the back, under the trunklid. It was used for jumping and driving down a flight of steps, and it sounds like it's headed to Baja. Not quite life, not quite art, follow the jump to see video.

Custom cars and B-Movies, they go together like vinegar and baking soda. The results, while momentarily interesting, fizzle out quickly.

We're not really sure what the heck the full version of Accelerator will be about - if indeed there will be one at all - other than some kind of horror intercut with scenes of new and vintage Shelby Mustangs and an Andrew Probert homage "Area 51" car. Any vehicle that can befuddle a speed trap is at least worth a look, though we warn you, you will not get your 1:41 back. Video posted after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Dan!

Poor Maxwell Smart. In the original series, Agent 86 started off pretty cool with a Sunbeam Tiger before the relative demotion to a Karmann Ghia convertible. This summer's retread of the Don Adams vehicle has Steve Carell fighting KAOS with an appropriately crime-fighterly Vespa LX150. With fuel prices pushing or past $4/gallon in a lot of places, things are tight at CONTROL, and the Vespa gets better mileage than pretty much any car. If you want to see what it's like to roll like Maxwell Smart, pay a visit to a Vespa dealer, they're offering free Subway gift cards in exchange for a test drive or product demonstration (hear that, Neff? Free lunch!). A Vespa did feature in the original series, so giving a role to the scooter in the new version isn't without precedent, though an Eos might have been more historically correct.

Classified Find of the Day: Robocop 3 Ford Taurus cop car

There was a Robocop 3? Apparently so, it even had theatrical release, but it should have gone directly to video. The most memorable thing from the Robocop franchise, at least for us, were the Taurus police cars. They featured prominently in all of the installments, 3 included. Now for those of us who had the AMT/Ertl kit (I had the SHO cop car, not the Robo 1), you can pick up the real thing. This isn't just a hand-me-down Taurus that got a rattlecan paintjob, either, but the last surviving automotive cast member from the final installment.

A longing for the movie and TV icon cars of the 1980s seems to be a common dork affliction - witness the fact you can buy flux capacitors and KITT, uh, kits. It takes a special breed to consider spending more on this '88 Taurus than it likely cost new. If you have no problem dropping $20,000 of today's dollars on yesterday's prop, the Volo Auto Museum has your ride. The car is fully documented and carries a George Barris signature (George seems to have signed any and everything...) and several other prop items. There's even a Robocop suit for an extra three grand if you want to go all-out.

We're willing to bet that more than a few Autoblog regulars have made use of The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) to keep tabs on their favorite star, or answer trivia questions like 'Who was the voice of Jazz in the Transformers Movie?' (A: Scatman Crothers).

But how many of you know about IMCDb - Internet Movie Car Data Base? The website chronicles the use of automobiles in movies of all ages and genres, and it's a fun and occasionally useful tool. Available in English, French and German, IMCDb boasts entries for a good number of vehicles used in films originating outside of Hollywood, as well as a large number of lesser-known marques like Hotchkiss and Innocenti. Well-organized with a powerful search utility that allows searches by manufacturer, vehicle type or film title, the massive database offers thousands of screen captures and allows users to participate by identifying 'mystery' vehicles.

'What Would Lindsay Lohan Drive?' Wonder no more.

eBay hosting pair of Tinsel Town trucks

eBay seems to be the place for moving pictures to unload their four-wheeled props as of late. Currently on the virtual block are a pair of pickups, one that's an Oscar Best Picture nominee and one that's really liked by a guy named Oscar.

The first is the truck driven by Jack Twist (played by Jake Gyllenhal) in the movie Brokeback Mountain, a 1950 GMC half-ton with nearly 61,000 miles. It still has its original engine that is reportedly in superb working condition, and its interior has been restored as per the movie. See the eBay auction here.

The second truck is a true Blue-Light Special: Larry the Cable Guy's 1977 Chevy half-ton, as seen in the movie Health Inspector. Unfortunately, this hauler isn't in as good a shape as Mr. Gyllenhal's truck. Actually, it's not even street legal and wears its salvage title as a badge of honor. However, proceeds of this auction, go to diabetes research.
