We're not sure if you heard, but Chrysler likes to celebrate the fact that it's from Detroit. You know, with the whole "Imported from Detroit" campaign featuring Eminem? It seems brand synergy may have reached its peak in the form of the Chrysler 300 Motown. According to Chrysler, this special edition sedan sedan "pays tribute to the Motor City's resurgence and determination through Detroit-born style and world class ingenuity." In real terms, that means extra chrome bits here and there, including a chrome grill and 20-inch polished "heritage" style aluminum wheels, all accented with black Chrysler and "Motown" badges.

Inside, the 300 Motown gets unique Pearl White Nappa leather seating, while the rest of the interior fittings are black. In a nice nod, the Uconnect 8.4 infotainment system's SD card reader has been pre-loaded with 100 tracks from original Motown artists. That collection of music pumps though the 10-speaker Beats Audio system, complete with 12-channel amplifier. The 2013 Chrysler 300 Motown is set to arrive this spring, with an MSRP of $32,995, which does not include a $995 destination charge.

This special edition is no random celebration of Detroit's music, as "Motown: The Musical" is arriving to the Lunt Fontanne Theater in New York City today. To that end, Chrysler has a new television spot, featuring Berry Gordy Jr., founder of Motown Records. Check out the video and learn more about the new 300 Motown by scrolling below.
Continue reading New Chrysler 300C Motown Edition spot features music mogul Berry Gordy Jr.

New Chrysler 300C Motown Edition spot features music mogul Berry Gordy Jr. originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Dec 2012 19:14:00 EST.
We often think of the 1950's as being the heyday for Detroit's fortunes, but even in the early-to-mid Sixties, it remained something of a modern marvel, thanks largely to its world-leading auto industry. This archival video was apparently commissioned as part of a failed bid for the 1968 Summer Olympics (which went to Mexico City instead). Reportedly filmed in 1965, Detroit - City on the Move shows the area in full bloom - a startling contrast to the shell of an empire that remains just 44 years later.

With the harmonies of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as a backdrop, Mayor Jerome Cavanagh takes us through footage of downtown streets bustling with some of the city's two million residents, shots of a startlingly clean and new Cobo Hall (including scenes of the Detroit Auto Show itself), the crisp campuses of the (then) Big Three, and of the city's once-mighty cultural draws. It even has footage of the late John F. Kennedy talking up its virtues as part of the Olympic bid.

Interestingly (and perhaps tellingly), this sanitized look at Detroit all but glosses over mounting troubles with blustery talks of 'rebirth,' it utterly omits mention of the hitmakers at Motown Records, and in retrospect, it fails to adequately address growing racial tensions in the city (Detroit's infamous riots would lay siege just two years later in 1967).

Admittedly, such promotional films show a city in its best light by design, but even still, there's no getting around the fact that the World's Automotive Capitol ain't what it used to be. This video, part of the Prelinger Archives, gives us a glimpse into what Detroit used to be, and perhaps more than anything, what it sought to be. It's an amazing yet sobering look into mid-Sixties America, and it's worth a look. When C-SPAN sent out a call for students to make a video address to President Obama and tell him what they thought were the most pressing issues facing the U.S., Pentis grabbed her camera. Her subject: the turmoil in her own home - the imploding auto industry.

In her eight-minute vid entitled "Auto Industry for America's Past, Present, and Future," Pentis lists the numbers and makes her case for what the auto industry means for America, and uses a history lesson and interviews with several industry workers to back it up. Admittedly, the numbers she uses are debatable, but it can't be argued that the vid is heartfelt.
