You hear the term "one of one" a lot in the classic car realm. It is meant to indicate the utmost rarity in a vehicle with an extremely limited production run. In contemporary cars, other notable examples include a one-off Bugatti Veyron, or the Ferrari P4/5 commissioned by James Glickenhaus.

Here is another supercar that can count itself among the club: the 2012 Mosler RaptorGTR. The RaptorGTR was actually not intended to have a single-unit production run, but according to the press release, "Unfortunately Mosler was pulled into the vortex of the financial downturn and only produced one of its latest products."

Unfortunate indeed, because the world needs more 838-horsepower 7.0-liter V8 supercars. With a curb weight of 2580 pounds, the RaptorGTR has a 649 horsepower-per-ton ratio. Mosler is quick to point out that, while Bugatti boasts 1200hp in the Veyron SuperSport, the car also carries a 4545-lb curb weight, resulting in a 528 horsepower-per-ton ratio.

The press release also points out that the RaptorGTR builds on the legacy started by previous Mosler products, such as the MT900R, which has "the highest percentage of podiums/start of any manufacturer in FIA sports car racing."

So what will this one-off performance exotic cost? Supercar Engineering, which developed the RaptorGTR, and owns the distribution rights, says $700,000. The interior can be customized to suit the buyer's whim, but it remains unclear if said customization is included for that price. We doubt it. The vehicle is also being marketed in Russia, UAE and Saudi Arabia, as well as the United States. Given its near-pefect rarity, there is a good chance that the Mosler RaptorGTR will sell for more than the listed $700k.
Continue reading 2012 Mosler RaptorGTR, #1 of 1, on sale for $700k

2012 Mosler RaptorGTR, #1 of 1, on sale for $700k originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 14:33:00 EST.
Exclusive can be an overused word in the automotive industry, but if anyone can claim the description, it's Mosler. The Florida-based supercar manufacturer recently announced that it will be limiting production of its MT900S Photon supercar to a single unit for 2012. Having that sort of exclusivity comes at a cost, though, and the customer that decides to pick up Mosler's 2012 allocation will have to shell out upwards of $479,000.

So what's so special about the Mosler MT900S Photon? For starters, it's one of the lightest supercars on the market, weighing in at just under 2,500 pounds thanks to a composite chassis and carbon fiber body panels. Motivation comes from a 7.0-liter V8 borrowed from Chevrolet tuned to deliver 535 horsepower, allowing the Mosler to reach 60 mph in less than three seconds and a top speed of over 200 mph. Despite having a design that's more than a decade old, the Mosler still looks somewhat modern (if kit-car like), particularly with in Proton guise that adds additional aerodynamic modications.

We've seen some painful product placement efforts revolving around cars over the past few years. Some of them involve movies or television shows, but more than a fair share come down to music videos. Yet none, absolutely none, can compare with the bizarre spectacle of Abby Cubey behind the wheel of the Mosler RaptorGTR.

For those not yet acquainted, the music video (available after the jump) features a performing artist unknown until now singing some extremely cheesy lyrics in, on and around the Florida-built supercar, accompanied by some very strange sideshow acts. It hardly does the performers any favors, and certainly doesn't help the exotic sports car along any either. But just how did this collaboration come into being?

The story is a little stranger than you might have thought. This wasn't, according to an investigative report undertaken by our friends at Jalopnik, just some American Idol reject getting ahold of a hot car in an attempt to jump-start her career. It actually runs a lot deeper than that, delving deep into a struggle over the business itself responsible for creating the car.

It all seems to revolve around one Todd Wagner, an engineer who, while at Mosler, helped create the RaptorGTR. Wagner has long since been ejected from the company, which is now being controlled by his ex-wife Jill. Todd says he has a distributorship agreement with Mosler in place - a claim that the company flatly denies - and that he created the video in order to promote the vehicle.

Reports also indicate that the terms of Mosler's sale specifically preclude Todd Wagner - who is quickly emerging as severely delusional - from having any involvement. Jill Wagner, meanwhile, speculates that her ex-husband is romantically involved with Cubey, and that the video is part of some misguided effort to promote her career as well as the business that is apparently not his to promote in the first place.

So is it working? Well, with some 40,000 YouTube hits in less than a week, we're reminded of the truism that there's no such thing as bad publicity. But after watching the video ourselves, we're beginning to doubt that very much. Follow the jump for the original video.
Continue reading The story behind that wacky Mosler RaptorGTR video is even stranger than we thought [w/video]

The story behind that wacky Mosler RaptorGTR video is even stranger than we thought [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 19:32:00 EST.
The 2012 Mosler RaptorGTR is one serious supercar. It boasts 838 horsepower and weighs just 2,580 pounds. How does an exotic racer manage to weigh so little when it's packing a twin-turbo, 7.0-liter engine? Extensive use of carbon fiber is the key, and the payoff is a 0-60 time of only 2.6 seconds. If that's not quick enough for you, for another $70,000, the RaptorGTR can be upgraded to produce a neck-snapping 1,212 horsepower.

Those are some serious stats, but it gets bizarre from here. The RaptorGTR is featured in a new music video with an artist called Abby Cubey, and we're pretty sure it was shot in an alternative universe. It starts off with some very much appreciated beauty shots and a terrific exhaust soundtrack, then Abby starts singing about various automobile/sexual double-entendres - while people breakdance and sing in front of a wall of fire. Then it gets weird. No, this isn't Jersey Shore, but now we think we know what The Situation will be driving next. Hit the jump to check out the head-scratching video.
Continue reading 2012 Mosler RaptorGTR debut with Abby Cubey is weirdest video you'll see this week

2012 Mosler RaptorGTR debut with Abby Cubey is weirdest video you'll see this week originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 12:29:00 EST.
Ever since Steven Spielberg brought the fiercest of dinosaurs to the silver screen in Jurassic Park, the name Raptor has come to symbolize the most ferocious of creations, from fighter jets and birds of prey to steroid-pumped pickup trucks, and even an NBA basketball team. That last example might not exactly live up to the name, but the next supercar from Mosler looks like it very much will.

The niche automaking Floridian known for its racing cars detuned for road use is reportedly working on a new model that will pack a 7.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 650 horsepower, but less than 2,000 lbs to schlepp around. That stratospheric power-to-weight ratio promises blistering performance, particularly when you consider that its previous creations, like the MT900 GTR XX pictured above or the 550-hp Photon just tested by Automobile Magazine - are already faster than most everything else on the road. Couple that with fresh styling to upgrade on the existing model's dated curves and Mosler (and its clients) could have a real winner on their hands.
*UPDATE: Mosler has informed us that the upcoming Raptor's weight-savings was misquoted by Automobile ("With 100 more horses and weighing 500 pounds less [than the Photon], the Raptor is going to whip the Pagani Huayra"). The Raptor will, in fact, be 500 pounds lighter than the 2,975-pound Pagani.
Mosler promises 650-hp Raptor weighing about <strike>1,900 pounds</strike> 2,500 pounds *UPDATE originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 16:31:00 EST.
There are exotics, and then there are exotics. Some are relatively commonplace, like Porsches, Lamborghinis or Ferraris. But some are decidedly, well... exotic. Like Spykers, Gumperts and Moslers, to name just a few. Those most exotic of exotics are the contents of the latest downloadable content package for Forza 3, the hit racing game for the Xbox 360.

Called, suitably enough, the Exotic Car Pack, it contains the SSC Ultimate Aero, Weismann GT MF5, Devon GTX, Spada Codatronca TS, Spyker C8 Laviolette LM85, Mosler MT900S, Rossion Q1, Radical SR8 LM and Gumpert Apollo S, plus an Australian exotic called the Joss JT1.
As much as we love its tires, we are really upset with Michelin. Where is the annual supercar lovefest that has been the Michelin SEMA booth? Last year's display was an incredible assortment of stock, tuned and race vehicles from Audi, Chevrolet and Porsche. The year before that the Michelin booth had a Caparo T1, Koenigsegg, RUF, Saleen S7, McLaren F1, Bugatti Veyron and Pagani Zonda. Those are tough acts to follow for supercar fans, so Michelin just decided to stop trying and didn't show this year. In all fairness, a lot of companies are absent or here with a much smaller setup. Something about the economy. Although it's a little tougher now, it's still possible for a SEMA showgoer to get a healthy dose of supercar exposure, though. It just takes a little more shoe leather or a click of your finger to see some of this year's supercars in our gallery below. In it you'll see cars from Mosler, Spyker, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Chevy, Factory Five, Porsche, Aston Martin and more. There were also quite a few race cars scattered around the halls this year that we thought you might like to see, as well. Check out the huge gallery by clicking on any image.

Gallery: SEMA 2008: Supercars

Gallery: SEMA 2008: Racecars

Photos copyright (C)2008 Frank Filipponio/Weblogs, Inc.
SEMA 2008: Supercar sightings from show floor originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Nov 2008 14:58:00 EST.
The standard Mosler MT900S is a supercar by anyone's standards. It's got a sleek body made of carbon fiber, a 7.0-liter V8 with 550 horsepower, and can hit 60 mph in just over three seconds. But for one of Mosler's customers it just wasn't enough. The owner of this MT900S enlisted the help of Nelson Racing Engines in Chatsworth, CA to build the ultimate motor for his supercar: a twin-turbo 427ci V8 producing up to 1800 horsepower on race fuel and around 1100 horsepower using 91 octane. To help make the car more streetable, boost can be controlled every 100 rpm in each gear. The first few gears are limited to around 6-8 psi, while higher gears can take full boost -- over 30 psi! We recently got the chance to see the car in person at the NRE facility where they were doing final testing on the engine. The dyno run we witnessed netted nearly 1600 horsepower before the intake collapsed from the pressure. We were told that the car should be completely finished in the next couple weeks and that we could come back for a ride. We'll be sure to take them up on the offer!

Mosler Automotive, which has had tremendous success in the last few years of GT racing in Europe, has announced a new race series specifically for MT900 race car owners. The spec series will tag along with the Dutch Supercar Series and have 11 different events throughout Europe in 2008. In conjunction with the announcement of the new series, Mosler also launched a new model called the MT900 Challenge. Similar to Mosler's GT3 car, the Challenge features a race-spec LS7 V8 engine, carbon fiber monocoque chassis, AP Racing brakes and lightweight BBS wheels, but replaces or takes out some of the more expensive components for a base price of 150,000 Euros compared to the race car's 225,000 Euros. Follow the jump for more information on the series or visit Mosler's web site for detailed specs on the new Challenge car.

More power, less weight. That's what we like to hear, and Florida-based supercar-maker Mosler has answered the call with its new MT900 GTR XX. Based on the MT900 GTR, which itself is as barely legal as the Olsen twins, the XX spec packs an extra 20 horsepower and loses 150kg in dead weight.

To trim the fat, Mosler fitted a new six-speed sequential transmission weighing 10kg less than the "conventional" version, installed a titanium exhaust system that weighs 5.5kg less than the steel tubes, replaced the brakes with aluminum brake calipers and carbon-ceramic discs, reworked the carbon-fiber body panels, developed seats that weight 4kg less apiece and cut 5kg out of the air-con. The Richard Simmons weight loss program further unburdens the 620-hp 7.0L Corvette LS7 V8 to bring the sprint to 100km/h (62mph) down to three seconds flat, and 200km/h (124mph) down to 8.7 seconds. If that sounds bonkers already, consider the rumors that Mosler is working on a twin-turbo version for the future, which is looking brighter and faster by the day.

While wondering the halls of the LA convention center we happened upon this Mosler MT900S with an... interesting paint scheme. It's even got color-matched carbon fiber Dymag wheels and yellow brake calipers to go with the Big Bird interior. While it may look like it just dropped out of a bag of Skittles, this Mosler has an LS7 V8 on board with 550 horsepower and 490 lb-ft torque for a 0-60 mph time of three seconds flat. We'll take ours in Darth Vader black like the one George Lucas got, thank you very much.

Mosler Deutschland, the German importer for Mosler Automotive, has created a special road-going GTR edition of the MT900S. The GTR will be powered by a 600 bhp 7.0-liter GM LS7 engine from the latest Corvette Z06. The MT900GTR includes a carbon front splitter, carbon fiber rear spoiler, and further underbody carbon fiber aerodynamic goodies to suck the car to the tarmac. It will be outfitted with a KW Automotive suspension, Recaro seats, Movit ceraminc brakes (with racing ABS), WORK wheels, and a custom Alpine stereo with, what else, carbon fiber speakers. What all this boils down to is a racing machine customized for the street. It even has air conditioning, and is built to both European and U.S. safety standards.

Moslers are racing cars for the road in the truest sense, and until now, the cockpits of these exclusive lightweight American supercars reflected that. Early road-going Moslers had interiors that were little more accommodating than their racing counterparts. More modern versions feature extensive leather trim, but the ergonomics are little more advanced. Now the Florida-based niche carmaker is taking a giant leap forward by offering fully customized interiors on its faster-than-spit, Corvette-powered MT900.

Buyers can opt to have custom dashboards, door panels and center consoles crafted from scratch according to their exact specification. Mosler's technicians will lay it out using CAD software, create the mold and fabricate the panels for a completely unique interior.

This kind of exclusivity comes at a price, of course, and it's a hefty one to be sure. A custom dash will set you back $120k, plus another $60k each for the doors and center consoles. This is of course in addition to the approximately $250k it'll cost you to buy the car into which your new custom interior can be installed. That's a serious chunk of change, but some would argue you can't put a price on individuality. Certainly not when the individual is being propelled to sixty in under four seconds....

Mosler gave the nod to wheel and composite technology specialists Dymag to develop the 18- and 20-inch magnesium/composite wheels for its mid-engined supercar.

Dymag has offered composite motorcycle wheels for some time, but the Mosler is the first production car to carry the lightweight rollers. And we mean light - the Mosler's front wheels come in at 14 pounds, and the rear wheels at 17.5 pounds, making each wheel more than 10 pounds lighter than the OZ forged aluminum wheels they replace. Given such a sizeable reduction in unsprung weight, fortunate buyers can expect huge dynamic benefits in almost every aspect of the car's on-road performance, particularly because the MT900S weighs just 2,450 pounds (1,950 pounds in the "Photon" version).

[Source: Sports Car Market]
Mosler announces first production car with carbon fiber wheels originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 May 2006 11:24:00 EST.
