<br />
We can't exactly say that we've always liked the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Rolex+Monterey+Motorsports+Reunion">Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion</a> - mainly because this is the first year that the event, formerly informally known as the Monterey Historics, is using that title. No matter what they call it, though, we have to say that we're glad some things never change. By that we are referring to the fact that the paddock is open to everyone and that the cars you see are some of the most amazing vehicles you've ever laid eyes on. Even the non-race cars that serve as basic transportation for the drivers while in town can be achingly captivating. <br />
<br />
We just couldn't resist walking around for a couple of hours and banging off a few hundred photos. There are race cars returning to their stalls, some heading out to the track, others just parked and still others undergoing open-heart surgery. There are display vehicles and street cars, along with a few celebrities on hand to participate or just admire them. We've put together a gallery of a few dozen of our favorites below.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monterey2010/">Monterey's</a> classic car week means a long days of big events, with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/concorso+italiano/">Concorso Italiano</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/quail/">The Quail</a> anchoring our Friday schedule. We've brought you a sampling of those shows already, but the parade of race cars from Laguna Seca over to the Quail cries out for a little video. The cars come in, the owners take a little break, and then the whole parade heads back to the track. The cars selected for the side trip are usually chosen to match the theme of the year's Quail gathering.<br />
<br />
This year, organizers went with a group of cars that were being featured at the track as well. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bugatti/">Bugatti</a> had a particularly large turnout at this year's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/rolex+monterey+motorsports+reunion/">Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion</a>, bolstered in part by the presence of the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/Veyron/">Veyron Super Sport</a>, which made its first track appearance in the U.S. About three dozen Bugs were entered in class 4A, and most made the trek over to Quail Lodge. As the video demonstrates, they sounded fantastic. Take a look and listen <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/08/15/monterey-2010-bugatti-gp-cars-swarm-the-quail-video/#continued">after the jump</a>.<br />

<br />
As if classic car fans in California weren't spoiled enough with the annual festivities in Monterey, world-class concours in Palm Springs, La Jolla, Dana Point, Palos Verdes, and Pasadena, and first-rate museums like The Petersen and Nethercutt Collection, another incredible collection is being opened to the public this spring. Set to open April 15 in Oxnard, California, the <a href="http://www.mullinautomotivemuseum.com/">Mullin Automotive Museum</a> is the anchored by the vehicles of Pebble Beach-winner and Monterey Historics racer Peter Mullin, and promises to be another must-see attraction.<br />
<br />
According to the press release you'll find <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/05/art-deco-mullin-automotive-museum-set-to-open-april-15/">after the jump</a>, "the Mullin Automotive Museum will pay homage to the art deco and machine age design eras (1918-1941) that produced exquisite art and magnificent automobiles." The centerpiece will be a huge collection of unrestored Bugattis, but expect to find other iconic brands like Delahaye, Delage, Talbot-Lago, Voisin and Hispano-Suiza, with an emphasis on French cars with coachwork by masters like Chapron, Figoni et Falaschi, Gangloff, Vanvooren, Labourdette, Letourneur et Marchand and Saoutchik among others.<br />
<br />
The museum will also feature art and furniture from that era and an entire floor devoted to "Club Bugatti." Besides being home to 100 of the most gorgeous flowing designs of all time, the Mullin will also house some less beautiful but equally significant vehicles including 30 unrestored cars and a whole roster of Grand Prix and Le Mans cars. So if you're in the area, be sure to stop by. Until then, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/05/art-deco-mullin-automotive-museum-set-to-open-april-15/">follow the jump</a> for the full press release.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.singervehicledesign.com/">Singer Vehicle Design</a> rolled out its first prototype, plainly named the "Singer 911," at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance last month. Based on an '80s-era long-wheelbase 911 donor vehicle, the company strips each chassis to its bare shell for "reinvention" into what Singer calls a "celebration of the golden air-cooled era of the world's most important sports car."<br />
<br />
Incontestable is its vintage Porsche 911 look. However, the Singer 911 is far from antiquated. The complete reincarnation includes chassis stiffening, new active aerodynamics, and a lightweight integral backbone structure and roll cage to improve torsional rigidity. Most interestingly, nearly all of the steel body panels are replaced by full carbon fiber composite bodywork candy-coated in Singer's exclusive "Racing Orange" paint. <br />
<br />
Under the rear decklid is an air-cooled 3.82-liter flat-six sporting six individual throttle bodies. With a GT3 crankshaft and titanium connecting rods, the powerplant spins eagerly to 8,000 RPM. The engine sends 425 horsepower and 340 lb-ft of torque to a proper Getrag G50 six-speed manual transmission. According to the engineering team, the 2,400-pound Singer 911 will sprint to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Top speed is in excess of 170 MPH.<br />

<br /><span class="headline">As the featured marque at the </span>36th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, Porsche decided to open up their vault and bring out some of their most iconic race cars to entertain the crowd. About 150 Porsches were entered in the various classes of racing action over the weekend, but a special group of unique racers was on display in the paddock as well. All of the cars made it out to the track for some parade laps, but even standing still they had no trouble conveying that Porsche is a company committed to racing. <br /><br />There were about a dozen great racers on hand, but four extra special cars stood out. On loan from the new Porsche Museum in Germany was a 1960 Type <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#38">718</a> Formula 2 car, a 1962 Type <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#32">804</a> Formula 1 racer, the "Grandma" 1962 Type <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#28">718</a> W-RS eight-cylinder Spyder, and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#51">GT1 98LM</a> that helped Porsche score a 1-2 at the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans. Outside that group, you could find a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#2">917/30</a>, a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#6">906 Longtail</a>, a very special cadmium-hooded <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#11">RSK</a>, a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#17">550 Spyder</a>, an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#19">RS60</a>, a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#23">917K</a>, plus a 956C and a newer RS Spyder. In separate display areas, you could also find the Bruce Leven Havoline <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#67">962</a>, a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#69">908 Longtail</a>, and the Jules <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/#71">936</a>.<br /><br />It was a pretty spectacular showing of significant race cars from Porsche, and that doesn''t even include the other 130 or so privateer Porsches that competed over the weekend in several different classes. They remain truly remarkable cars and their owners did them proud. Check out our high-res gallery below and the full press release after the jump.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics">Monterey 2009: Porsche Display at Monterey Historics</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/porschedisplaymonterey_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/porschedisplaysmonterey---01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/porschedisplaysmonterey---02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/porschedisplaysmonterey---03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-porsche-display-at-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/porschedisplaysmonterey---04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Photos copyright (C)2009 Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/20/monterey-2009-porsche-cracks-open-the-vault-for-monterey-histor/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Monterey 2009: Porsche cracks open the vault for Monterey Historics displays</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/20/monterey-2009-porsche-cracks-open-the-vault-for-monterey-histor/">Monterey 2009: Porsche cracks open the vault for Monterey Historics displays</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 08:29:00 EST. Even though it's essentially run just for fun, the track action at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca can be downright menacing during the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/18/monterey-2009-the-monterey-historic-automobile-races/">Monterey Historic Automobile Races</a>. Just ask the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/monterey-2009-ferrari-250-tr-gets-airborn-makes-friends-with-t/">Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa driver</a> who had a severe pucker moment on Saturday. Sure, the cars survived relatively unscathed, but some drivers may probably going to have second thoughts come Monterey 2010.<br /> <br /> Given our current economic and environmental attitudes, it is conceivable (if unlikely) that historic racing might not last far into the next decade. What a pity it would be for vintage racing to go away, but quite honestly, this event could easily continue as nothing more then a classic motorsports car show. The cars themselves certainly draw more than flies - and even at rest, they look so amazingly fast and stylish that simply touring the paddock can be enough entertainment for all but the most jaded fan.<br /> <br /> Just by strolling around the paddock you can see, feel, taste and hear things that will instantly elicit a smile every time the memory rises in your brain. While working our way around the infield on Saturday we came across dozens of cars, bikes, and people that left us in awe... but even so, we still hope that the racing continues, if only for the noise and added visuals. <br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races-paddock-walk">2009 Monterey Historic Automobile Races paddock walk</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races-paddock-walk/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/montereyhistoricspaddock---01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races-paddock-walk/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/montereyhistoricspaddock---02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races-paddock-walk/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/montereyhistoricspaddock---03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races-paddock-walk/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/montereyhistoricspaddock---04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races-paddock-walk/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/montereyhistoricspaddock---05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> <em><strong><small>Photos copyright (C)2009 Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/19/monterey-2009-vintage-racers-exude-speed-even-at-rest/">Monterey 2009: Vintage racers exude speed even at rest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 19 Aug 2009 17:40:00 EST. <br />In the mid-Eighties, Porsche released the 962, a long-wheelbase variant of the 956, to compete in IMSA's GTP class and later in Group C (as the 962C). Even though IMSA's GTP rules stipulated that only one (unfortunately named) KKK turbocharger could be used, the 962 was bloody-your-nose fast. <br /><br />This past weekend at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/MontereyHistorics/">Monterey Historics</a>, Mark Hotchkis proved just how fast the 962 was/is by lapping half the field in his class during a <em>ten lap</em> race. That's kinda ridiculous. In fact, the only car that gave Hotchkis any trouble at all was a nine-year newer ALMS Kremer-Porsche Spyder K8 (the same type of car Derek Bell raced at his final Le Mans). Anywho, we've got a righteous video of the 962 quite literally eating up Laguna Seca at 10/10s <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/18/video-hotchkis-porsche-962-at-laguna-seca/">after the jump</a>. Oh, and that metal wheel Hotchkis's left hand keeps fiddling with? That's the boost dial which can summon up to 50 pounds of pressure. Put another way, crank your computer's volume all the way up. <em>Thanks to Dan K for the video. <br /><br /></em>[Source: <a href="http://www.grandtouringprototype.com/videos/gtp-hotchkis-porsche-962-in-car-mazda-raceway-laguna-seca-540/">Grand Touring Prototype</a>]<br /><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/18/video-hotchkis-porsche-962-laps-up-laguna-seca/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VIDEO: Hotchkis Porsche 962 laps up Laguna Seca</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/18/video-hotchkis-porsche-962-laps-up-laguna-seca/">VIDEO: Hotchkis Porsche 962 laps up Laguna Seca</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 18 Aug 2009 16:58:00 EST. <strong> <br />
</strong>Another year, another weekend of vintage car racing at the Monterey Historics. Our only complaint is that we could spend just one day at Laguna Seca with all of the other automotive happenings around the Monterey Peninsula occurring at the same time. This year featured Porsche, which made it all the more special. The company's entire racing history through the early-1990s was represented on track, from a 1949 Porsche 356 SL to a 1990 Porsche 962. While the main focus was on the racers from Stuttgart, there were also 200+ other cars to enjoy. We spent our afternoon drooling over <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races/#3">Ferrari 250TRs</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races/#31">Jag D-Types</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races/#48">Maserati Birdcages</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races/#49">Lotus 23s</a>, vintage <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races/#45">Alfa Romeos</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-monterey-historic-automobile-races/#13">Bugattis</a>, and more. Check out our favorite photos from Saturday's races in the high-res gallery below.<br />

<br />From the second we arrived in Monterey last week, we noticed one thing: there were Porsches everywhere. From the fleet of 30 Panameras that Porsche brought out, to the hundreds of owners that made the trip to Northern California, we couldn't seem to drive for more than a few seconds without passing one. The epicenter of the Porsche party, though, was at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the vintage races. <br /><br />Named as the featured marque for 2009, Porsches made up nearly one third of the competitors and made up most of the field for groups like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#79">1964-1971 FIA Mfg. Championship Cars</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#84">1981-1990 IMSA GTP &amp; FIA Mfg. Championship Cars</a> that were packed with Porsche <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#35">906s</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#41">908s</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#39">917s</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#48">956s</a>, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#45">962s</a>. We also enjoyed seeing the earlier models like the trio of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#31">1960 RS-60s</a>, a couple <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#70">550 Spyders</a>, all the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#16">356s</a>, and the oldest Porsche on the track, a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#13">1949 Porsche 356 SL</a>. Even some of the display cars like a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/#59">1998 GT1</a> that raced at Le Mans were able to get on track during some parade laps that honored the late Bob Carlson, the former PR director for Porsche NA, and Bob Snodgrass, a principal for the Brumos racing team. <br /><br />We've compiled all of our Porsche photos from our day at the track in the high-res gallery below, complete with descriptions for each one in case you aren't familiar with the car. Enjoy!<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics">Porsches at the 2009 Monterey Historics</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/porschehistorics_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Porsche Parade Laps at Laguna Seca" title="Porsche Parade Laps at Laguna Seca" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/porschehistorics_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="1969 Porsche 917K" title="1969 Porsche 917K" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/porschehistorics_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="1982 Porsche 956" title="1982 Porsche 956" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/porschehistorics_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="1955-1961 GT Cars under 2200cc" title="1955-1961 GT Cars under 2200cc" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsches-at-the-2009-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/porschehistorics_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="1960 Porsche RS-60" title="1960 Porsche RS-60" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Photos copyright (C)2009 <a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/">Drew Phillips</a> / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/18/monterey-2009-145-vintage-porsches-take-to-the-track/">Monterey 2009: 145 vintage Porsches take to the track</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 18 Aug 2009 11:20:00 EST. <em><strong><small>2009 Rolex Moments in Time Display at the Monterey Historics - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em></div>
<br />
Along with the hundreds of cars on track, this weekend's Monterey Historics honored six significant racing cars and their achievements in a display called the Rolex Moments in Time. <br />
<br />
This year, there were some truly legendary cars featured, including the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-rolex-moments-in-time-display/#7">1969 Ford GT40 Le Mans winner</a> and the runner-up <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-rolex-moments-in-time-display/#7">Porsche 908LH</a>. The two combined for the closest ever finish at the 24 hour race, with the Ford taking the win by just four seconds. Two other racecars that battled it out on the track, a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-rolex-moments-in-time-display/#7">Porsche 917K</a> and a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-rolex-moments-in-time-display/#2">Ferrari 512S</a> were also on display, and examples of each car could also be seen on track on Saturday. Finally, a 1972 McLaren M20 and a 1976 Porsche 936/81 that raced at Le Mans from 1976-1978 (winning it in '77) finished off the featured cars. You can read more about the storied racecars in the press release after the jump, and be sure to check out the high-res gallery below. <br />

<br />Some of us weren't able to attend the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/2009+Monterey+Historics/">Monterey Historic races</a> over the weekend, but the first thing we heard once the laptop spooled up was that a very expensive Ferrari 250 TR smacked into a bunch of tires at Laguna Seca. This has turned into the crash heard 'round the world for a few simple reasons. Make that thirty four reasons, to be exact. That's right Ferrari only made 34 250 Testa Rossas from 1956 to 1961. Actually, let's just make that 21 reasons, as the 250 TR is the preferred version of the car, and only 19 customer cars and 2 racers were built between 1958 and 1959. And while a 1957 250 Testa Rossa just sold this past May for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/18/ferrari-250tr-sells-for-record-breaking-12-2-million-at-rm-auct/">$12,200,000</a>, making it the most expensive car, well, <em>ever </em>-- the 1958 TR that cashed this weekend is "only" worth about $8 million. <br /><br /><span style="MARGIN-TOP: 7px; FLOAT: left; MARGIN-RIGHT: 10px"><script> digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/Multi_million_Ferrari_250_TR_crashing_at_Monterey_Video'; </script><script src=" http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span>Our own <em>meraviglioso</em> photographer Drew Philips had Nikon in hand near Laguna's famed Corkscrew and was able to capture the tragic <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/monterey-2009-ferrari-250-tr-gets-airborn-makes-friends-with-t/">off-track excursion</a> -- which is why we have these amazing photographs. In fact, Autoblog reader James Iovino was so smitten with Drew's work that he took all the individual photos and video-ized them. Which is not only a word we just made up, but pretty dang cool to watch. That is if watching a near-priceless Ferrari jump across gravel and slam into a bunch of dirty old tires can ever be cool. But hey, at least the TR got beat up on a race track instead resting in a garage during an earthquake. Besides, everything ought to buff right out. Full "video" <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/video-sort-of-multi-million-dollar-ferrari-250-tr-crashing-at/">after the jump</a>. <em>Thanks again to James Iovino for his handiwork!</em> <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics">Ferrari 250TR Crash at the Monterey Historics</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/video-sort-of-multi-million-dollar-ferrari-250-tr-crashing-at/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VIDEO (sort of): Multi-million dollar Ferrari 250 TR crashing at Monterey Historics</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/video-sort-of-multi-million-dollar-ferrari-250-tr-crashing-at/">VIDEO (sort of): Multi-million dollar Ferrari 250 TR crashing at Monterey Historics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. <br /> While many events during the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monterey2009">Monterey</a> car week simply involve parking classics on a golf course, we can appreciate the fact that many vintage car owners are willing to put their priceless automobiles on a track. While the Monterey Historics do everything they can to promote the safety of both cars and drivers, there is never a guarantee that accidents won't happen. We were reminded of that fact this weekend when a 1958 Ferrari 250 TR completely lost its brakes before Laguna Sega's Corkscrew, caught air while going through the gravel trap, and came to a stop only after hitting a tire wall. <br /> <br /> This particular TR, owned by David Love, has been a regular at the Monterey Historics and other vintage events for more than 15 years, so it was especially tough to see it get banged up. From what we've heard, Love was shaken up but is okay, and the car can be repaired. <br /> <br /> We happened to be at the Corkscrew, camera in hand, when the 250 TR went off course, and were able to capture Love's off-track excursion. If you can handle seeing a beautiful, multi (<em>multi</em>) million dollar Testa Rossa getting damaged, then check out the entire sequence of photos in the gallery below.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics">Ferrari 250TR Crash at the Monterey Historics</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> <em><strong><small>Photos copyright (C)2009 <a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/">Drew Phillips</a> / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/monterey-2009-ferrari-250-tr-gets-airborn-makes-friends-with-t/">Monterey 2009: Ferrari 250 TR gets airborne, makes friends with tire wall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 12:29:00 EST. <em><strong></strong></em><strong><em><strong><small>Ducat</small></strong></em><em><strong><small>i 1098 S Martini Racing Bike - Click above for our high-res gallery</small></strong></em><br /></strong></div>
<strong><br /></strong>While cars are definitely the conveyance of choice on the track at Laguna Seca during the Monterey Historics, there are enough motorcycles, scooters and mopeds zipping all over the paddock to make you realize that car people can very often be bike people as well. One pair of bikes that really caught our eye were the Ducatis you see above; One in Gulf Racing orange and blue, the other in the classic red and blue stripes on white of Martini &amp; Rossi, better known as Martini Racing. That was the one that really captivated us.<br /><br />Created as a tribute to Porsche, the Ducati 1098 S Martini Racing Bike was built to be displayed alongside the 1971 Martini Porsche 908/3 over the race weekend. This one-off Ducati honors the powerful and highly successful Martini Porsche and Lancia racing machines of the 1960's and 1970's. It looks awesome too, and we wish they would make more. And send them to our garage. Soon.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-ducati-martini-tibute-bike">Monterey 2009: Ducati Martini Tibute Bike</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-ducati-martini-tibute-bike/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/ducatitribute---1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-ducati-martini-tibute-bike/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/ducatitribute---2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-ducati-martini-tibute-bike/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/ducatitribute---3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-ducati-martini-tibute-bike/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/ducatitribute---4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-ducati-martini-tibute-bike/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/ducatitribute---5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong><small><em>Photos copyright (C)2009 Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, Inc.</em></small></strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/16/monterey-2009-ducati-debuts-martini-porsche-tribute-bike-at-his/">Monterey 2009: Ducati debuts Martini Porsche tribute bike at Historics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 16 Aug 2009 13:33:00 EST. <strong> <br /></strong>In addition to the eight classes of vintage racecars that took to the track at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday, spectators were also treated to a duo of special vehicles. The first was the 2010 Fisker Karma, which made its official driving debut (even though we saw it driving the day before at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/15/monterey-2009-concorso-italiano-returns-to-the-links/">Concorso Italiano</a>). We almost missed it since we couldn't hear it coming and it only did one lap, but fortunately we were able to grab a few photos. The next was the Devon GTX, which set a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/07/devon-gtx-sets-one-lap-record-at-laguna-seca/">blistering lap time of 1:35.075 at MRLS</a> just a few days earlier. After wowing the crowds, the GTX was loaded on a trailer and transported to Pebble Beach for its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/15/monterey-2009-2010-devon-gtx/">official debut</a>. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Monterey Historic Automobile Races personalities - Click above for high-res gallery</small></strong></em></div>
<br />While at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races this year, it dawned on us that the cars taking to the track are really legends in the Pantheon of autodom. The Porsche 917, Ford GT40, Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, Jaguar D-Type, and Maserati Birdcage are all stars in their fields, but the Historics are about so much more than famous cars. <br /><br />First of all, the cars are being driven, and driven hard. That leads us to important point number two: People are needed to drive (and appreciate) these vehicles in order to make the races as entertaining as they are. Some of those people are famous celebrities from outside the car world, some are car people who aren't necessarily household names, others are automotive giants, and still others are just fans. Granted, some of those fans have deeper knowledge and appreciation of the vehicles than even their owners, but other than that they tend to be ordinary people who pay their taxes just like the rest of us.<br /><br />Among the crowds at Laguna Seca, we spotted folks from each of these groups and captured some of them on film in (hopefully) interesting situations or poses. We've assembled a small gallery of those shots to share with you. Click below and you'll see everyone from Sir Stirling Moss to Mike Joy, Hurley Haywood to Vic Edelbrock. We didn't get any shots of Brian Redman, Jay Leno or David Donohue either, but we know they were there. One star who was definitely there was Patrick Dempsey, who could be seen behind the wheel of a Mazda RX-792, even though he wasn't officially there. He was a really good sport as we continually ran into him around the paddock. He also did a pretty good job of driving that Mazda, but we don't want to get him in any trouble.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-faces-and-names-at-the-historics">Monterey 2009: Faces and Names at The Historics</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-faces-and-names-at-the-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/historicsfaces---01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Stirling Moss" title="Stirling Moss" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-faces-and-names-at-the-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/historicsfaces---02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Stirling Moss" title="Stirling Moss" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-faces-and-names-at-the-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/historicsfaces---03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Derek Bell and Stirling Moss" title="Derek Bell and Stirling Moss" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-faces-and-names-at-the-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/historicsfaces---04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Patrick Dempsey" title="Patrick Dempsey" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2009-faces-and-names-at-the-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/historicsfaces---05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Patrick Dempsey" title="Patrick Dempsey" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Photos copyright (C)2009 Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, Inc.<br /></small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/16/monterey-2009-the-faces-and-names-of-the-monterey-historics/">Monterey 2009: The faces and names of the Monterey Historics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 16 Aug 2009 10:36:00 EST. <em><strong><small>Porsches at the 2009 Monterey Historics - Click above for a high-res version</small></strong></em></div>
<br />
When it was announced that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/30/porsche-named-as-feature-marque-for-2009-monterey-historics/">Porsche would be the featured marque at this year's Monterey Historics</a>, we knew we were in for a vintage racing treat come August. That time has nearly come, and we can't wait to see the dozens of Porsches that will be at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend. One third of the 450-car field will bear the Porsche shield, many of which are already at the track to prepare for the upcoming three days of racing. <br />
<br />
As is tradition, the Porsches gathered on the straight between turns three and four for a group photo. As you can see, the collection of legendary racecars is unbelievable. Along with the Porsches that will be on track, special models will be on display from the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/06/first-look-new-porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/">Porsche Museum</a> in Germany, and hundreds of owners have also traveled to Monterey to join in the festivities. Be sure to check back over the next few days for full coverage and high-res galleries of the races.<br />

<p>One of our favorite events of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monterey+2008/">Monterey Weekend</a> is the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/17/monterey-2008-saturdays-monterey-historic-automobile-races/">Historic Automobile Races</a> featuring hundreds of vintage racecars at the famed Laguna Seca racetrack. The historical value of the automobiles combined with the ease of access to the cars and owners in the paddock make it a spectator favorite. Ensuring that each event is unique, the races feature a different marque or theme every year. The past few years have seen fantastic collections of Alfa Romeos, Indy Roadsters, Coopers, and Chaparrals. For 2009 Porsche will be the featured marque (previously featured in 1982 and 1998), joining Ferrari and Alfa Romeo as the only makes to be selected three times. Everything from early Speedsters to the 956 Group C cars will be on track. If you're a Porsche nut, we would highly recommend that you start making travel plans for next August. More details in the press release after the jump. </p>

Saturday was actually day two of the Historics, which will conclude on Sunday. While the races are exciting and the action very real, the results are slightly less important here than just witnessing the spectacle. The sounds alone are worth a trip to Laguna Seca in August. Saturday's action featured the Toyota Race of Legends, with several other classes having their day in the sun as well. <br /><br />We had photographers all around the track capturing glimpses of the action, so make sure to click through the gallery to see what you are missing. After witnessing Mario Andretti throw the checkered flag for the Legends and then completing what seemed like dozens of "demo" laps in his old Lotus F1 car, we thought we knew what makes this event so special. And then we saw Patrick Dempsey getting some demo laps in an old Chrysler, and we had to rethink our theory. Okay, Dempsey is probably a bit more maligned here than he deserves, but he does seem to be featured here a lot lately. Personally we were happy to see the Keno twins of <span style="FONT-STYLE: italic">Antiques Roadshow</span> fame just as much.<br /><br />Look through the gallery and you will see some of these encounters and dozenz of pics of the great cars you practically trip over in the open paddock. It's just sick how many of the greatest cars from throughout automotive history are here and being driven as they should be. Saturday's classes included the finals for Pre-1940 Sports and Touring Cars, 1925-1950 Racing Cars and Indy Roadsters, 1950-1960 Sports Racing Cars, 1966-1972 Historic Trans-Am Cars, 1966-1974 Historic Can-Am Cars and 1964-1975 FIA Sports Racing Cars. We also got to see some of the cars that will be running Sunday as their owners tweaked them for the final day of competition. If you make it out to the track on Sunday you'll likely catch the featured Alfa Romeos as well as 1955-1966 Production Sports Cars, 1967-1978 Historic F-1 Cars, and 1972-1983 Historic IMSA Cars. If you can't find something you like in those groups, you're not trying.<br /><br /><span style="FONT-STYLE: italic">Press release after the jump with results and quotes from Saturday.</span><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-monterey-historics">2008 Monterey Historics</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/01_historics08a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/02_historics08a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/03_historics08a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/04_historics08a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/05_historics08a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong>Photos Copyright (C)2008 <a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/">Drew Phillips</a> / Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, Inc.</strong></p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/17/monterey-2008-saturdays-monterey-historic-automobile-races/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Monterey 2008: Saturday's Monterey Historic Automobile Races</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/17/monterey-2008-saturdays-monterey-historic-automobile-races/">Monterey 2008: Saturday's Monterey Historic Automobile Races</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 17 Aug 2008 13:01:00 EST. Basically they are the same cars that are used in Long Beach for the Pro/Celebrity Race. The lineup of drivers included last year's winner, Derek Bell, along with other former F1 and sports car racers like Eddie Cheever, Danny Sullivan, Johnny Herbert, Alan Jones, John Watson, Jean-Pierre Jarier, Patrick Tambay, and Alain de Cadenet, as well as current Toyota F1 hot shoe, Timo Glock.<br /><br />As a bit of a twist in the proceedings, local tuner and sometime racer Bruce Canepa had won a spot on the grid during a charity auction. Bruce quickly promised to beat the pants off the pros, citing his experience at Laguna Seca (his shop is just down the road), his prior racing experience (he has teamed with Bobby Rahal and Rick Mears at the Daytona 24 Hours and was on the Porsche AG 935 factory team), and his recent Scion tC track training.<br /><br />Alain de Cadenet, for one, wasn't about to take that challenge lying down. He told us as much on Wednesday night at the Jet Center. A little friendly rivalry could only add to the fun. The stakes were raised when the officials held the draw for starting positions. Wouldn't you know it, Canepa landed the pole. Well, the gauntlet was thrown down and when the flag was waived, it was time to put up or shut up. Follow the jump for a brief rundown of the results.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2008-toyota-race-of-legends">Monterey 2008: Toyota Race of Legends</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2008-toyota-race-of-legends/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/raceoflegends08_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2008-toyota-race-of-legends/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/raceoflegends08_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2008-toyota-race-of-legends/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/raceoflegends08_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2008-toyota-race-of-legends/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/raceoflegends08_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/monterey-2008-toyota-race-of-legends/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/raceoflegends08_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong>Photos Copyright (C)2008 <a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/">Drew Phillips</a> / Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, Inc.</strong></p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/17/monterey-2008-the-toyota-race-of-legends/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Monterey 2008: The Toyota Race of Legends</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/17/monterey-2008-the-toyota-race-of-legends/">Monterey 2008: The Toyota Race of Legends</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 17 Aug 2008 07:01:00 EST. We'll just shorten that to the Monterey Historics from now on, unless the Rolex and Toyota folks are looking in. We actually covered the races in two posts a couple of weeks ago. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/19/pebble-beach-week-2007-the-monterey-historics-at-laguna-seca-p/">Part one</a> covered Saturday's main action, while <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/25/pebble-beach-week-2007-the-monterey-historics-at-laguna-seca-p/">part two</a> showed some of the events earlier in the week. The tape starts with some vintage open-wheel racers from old GP cars to the featured Indy Roadsters of the mid- to late-'50s. You'll also catch some of the most famous sports and GT racers of the mid '60s, like the Ferrari 250 LM and GTO, Shelby GT350 and Corvette pictured above. Not a lot of coverage, but we were juggling still cams and video cams so it was a bit difficult. The thrill of seeing these iconic race cars from throughout history is something that is hard to impart. Hopefully this gives you at least a little taste. The YouTube clip is after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/03/video-2007-monterey-historics-sampler/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VIDEO: 2007 Monterey Historics sampler</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/03/video-2007-monterey-historics-sampler/">VIDEO: 2007 Monterey Historics sampler</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 03 Sep 2007 16:56:00 EST.
