Ferrari 599 HGTE

We may have obsessively covered the cars of Pebble Beach Week out in Monterey, California, but it appears that we - and everyone else in the media - may have missed one.

If a letter sent to a Ferrari owner is to be believed (and we're not convinced it should be), the automaker held a special gathering for a select group of owners to view a 599 Roadster prototype. The letter, which you can view at Luxury4Play.com, thanks the attendees for their "first feedback" on this "upcoming limited edition product." There's no way to verify the authenticity of this letter, but if we're honest, it looks kinda-sorta legit.

Ferrari usually does a pretty good job of keeping these things under wraps, and since we didn't get to see the 599 Roadster during our time in Monterey, we wouldn't be surprised if it shows up at a future auto show (Paris, perhaps?). We'll keep our eyes peeled.

As always, we made the annual trek to Monterey, California for Pebble Beach Week with laptops in tow and digital SLR cameras in hand to capture everything worthy of your time. As you can see by our assemblage of posts below, 2010 was another spectacular year for new and old.

From a bevy of new car introductions to a slew of special events and even a couple of high-brow auctions, we'd imagine there's something to see for just about every fan of internal combustion. We witnessed several million-dollar cars go up for sale at RM's auction on Saturday night, but across town, the Gooding & Company auction had even more impressive metal crossing the block. Gooding's two night auction resulted in more than $64 million in sales, including six world records. "We went into this year's Pebble Beach Auctions with high expectations because of the sheer number of extraordinary cars we had consigned," said David Gooding, President and founder of Gooding & Company. "Our highest-ever Pebble Beach weekend results at $64.59 Million speak for themselves and I couldn't be happier."

The record-setting cars auctioned off by Gooding:
In addition, several other cars topped the million dollar mark including a 1995 McLaren F1 at $3,575,000, a 1928 Mercedes-Benz S 26/180 Boattail Speedster at $3,740,000 and a 1966 Ford GT40 Mk I at $1,650,000.

Another Pebble Beach Concours has come and gone, the confetti has flown and the champagne has been imbibed. The somewhat surprising Best of Show selection has been entered into the record books, and now, we, your faithful Autobloggers, can finally get some rest. It's been a grueling week full of new car unveilings, vintage car races, auctions and, of course, the Concours. As much as we enjoy every minute of it, and are sad to see it end, we're always glad to be home again, sleeping in our own beds. But before we crawl back into our caves to slumber for another year, we have some unfinished business to take care of.

There are always thousands of images that don't make it into the official posts, most of which are just as beautiful, and just as interesting. As you probably surmised if you've seen our coverage so far, this year's Concours was truly spectacular - from the Dawn Patrol entrance of the twelve Jaguar XK-SS roadsters to the crowning of the champ, we've shown you the tributes to Indy, Alfa, and Jaguar, to the Ferrari SWB and Ghia... and now it's time to show you all of the rest of the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. We've assembled a gallery of high-res images for you to peruse that covers what we didn't cover to date. Call it a parting nod to you our readers and to all those who make this such a great event. We can't exactly say that we've always liked the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion - mainly because this is the first year that the event, formerly informally known as the Monterey Historics, is using that title. No matter what they call it, though, we have to say that we're glad some things never change. By that we are referring to the fact that the paddock is open to everyone and that the cars you see are some of the most amazing vehicles you've ever laid eyes on. Even the non-race cars that serve as basic transportation for the drivers while in town can be achingly captivating.

We just couldn't resist walking around for a couple of hours and banging off a few hundred photos. There are race cars returning to their stalls, some heading out to the track, others just parked and still others undergoing open-heart surgery. There are display vehicles and street cars, along with a few celebrities on hand to participate or just admire them. We've put together a gallery of a few dozen of our favorites below.

We've already shown you that Jaguar was honored at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with a dozen XK-SS roadsters showing up for the party, but there were other Jaguars on hand as well - lots and lots of remarkable Jags.

The history of Jaguar actually began almost 90 years ago when two young men hell-bent on motorcycle glory set up a small company to produce sidecars under the Swallow name in 1922. The younger of the two was William Lyons, who later became Sir William Lyons, mainly because Jaguar went on to bring Britain so much motoring glory. The sidecar business eventually turned into an automobile coachworks, with custom bodies on a bespoke Standard brand chassis that became know as the S.S.I. and S.S.II.

For the follow-up to those early S.S. models - Standard Swallow some think - Lyons had commissioned a new overhead-valve six-cylinder engine that was about 50 percent more powerful than the old side-valve engines they had been using. They put the new engine in a new chassis, enclosed it in the company's first four-door sedan body and Lyons personally chose what he thought was the most appropriate name from a list of choices given to him by his advertising people - Jaguar. On September 23, 1935, the company unveiled the SS Jaguar to London's assembled press. That car led to the short-wheelbase SS Jaguar 100 sports car that helped establish Jaguar's reputation for performance with its early racing success.

After World War II, the company decided to change its name to simply 'Jaguar,' dropping the newly infamous "S.S." label. The automaker also started focusing less on inexpensive sportscars for the homeland market, and more on luxurious models aimed at capturing rich American buyers. One way to do that was with new product and Lyons and his crew were cooking up a duesie - a new sportscar featuring a double overhead cam engine just like the race cars of the era. The goal was 160 horsepower from the engine's 3.4-liter capacity and a 120 mph top speed. That car was the iconic XK120 - "XK" for the engine and "120" for the car's top speed. That begat the XK140 and 150 and a whole slew of other legendary vehicles that bore the Jaguar name.

Indianapolis 500 100th Anniversary at Pebble Beach

The 95th running of the Indianapolis 500 this May represented the 100th Anniversary of "The Greatest Spectacle In Racing." The unbroken streak halted a total of five years during our involvement with the two World Wars. It's hard to believe we've had this legendary race for that long, but the centennial was certainly deserving of recognition - and although perhaps a bit incongruous to some, it was celebrated in grand style at no less than the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. As America's premier race, why not have America's - and perhaps the world's - premier classic car event host the festivities?

A large class of past Indy winners and notable contenders gathered in Pebble Beach on Sunday. Take a look at our gallery and you will see most, if not all, of the entrants - many on rare special loan from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum:

Ferrari 250 GT Scaglietti SWB Gathering at Pebble Beach - Click above for high-res image gallery

Although most Ferrari modelsare highly coveted, the 250 GT Short Wheelbase Berlinetta is one of those cars that sportscar enthusiasts dream of even catching a glimpse of someday. Well, "someday" was Sunday at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance for those who attended. And not only did they get the chance to see a 250 GT SWB up close and personal, but there were eight of them on hand so everyone could share. How clever.

As the historians among you will know, Ferrari had been building street and race cars since 1947, and through the '50s they also made some of the most exquisite dual-purpose cars of all time as well - cars that could be driven to track then raced there. In the late '50s, the best known of these was Ferrari's 250 GT Long Wheelbase Berlinetta - a.k.a. the "Tour de France." At the Paris Auto Show in 1959, its replacement was shown for the first time - the 250 GT Passo Corto, or Short Wheelbase Berlinetta. As its name suggested, it rode on a shorter wheelbase than the TdF, but also had other significant changes.

The engine was a classic 3.0-liter Ferrari V-12, producing between 240 and 280 horsepower. Less than 160 SWBs were built from 1959-1962, no two exactly alike. There were "Lusso" versions with a steel body, a full interior, door panels, sound deadening materials and wind-up windows. There were also light alloy cars with smaller diameter tube frames, no sound deadening, sliding Plexiglas windows and race-ready high-compression engines. These were for people who definitely wanted to track their car,s and although faster than the Lusso editions, they didn't quite match the ultimate SWBs - the Comp/61 or "SEFAC Hot Rods."

The SEFAC cars had the alloy body but also some subtle changes like a more laid-back windshield. They also used the highest spec, with almost 300 horsepower. So-equipped, they could run 0-60 mph in five seconds and had a top speed over 150 mph. Ferrari only built 21 of these Comp/61s and four of them were in the mix at Pebble this year. What a treat.

Although ruggedly handsome, with an aggressive stance and tight proportions, the appeal of the SWB goes further. The SWB is forever coupled with that time in racing history when the Italians started to feel the pressure from a new foe - The Americans...and one particular Texas chicken rancher/racer who was helping Ford take down the Maranello firm. The threat posed by the Shelby Cobra was countered by another evolution of the dual-purpose Ferrari sports racer - the legendary 250 GTO.

(Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, or Lombardy Car Manufacturing Company) is 100, having been established in 1910. That was the year that a group of Milanese enthusiasts decided they could build cars better than the stuff they were getting from foreign automakers. ALFA wasn't very successful at first - at least not financially - but during World War I, the company was taken over by a young engineer, Nicola Romeo, and the rest, as they say, is history. 100 years later, we have some of the most incredible and memorable sports and racing cars of all time wearing the cross-and-serpent or the Quadrifoglio.

At the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday, the automaker received a warm welcome, with two dozen or so of their most significant models on hand for the festivities - many from the factory museum. Those 24 cars represented just a small sample of the sports and racing cars that made the company famous - everything from one of their first 1910 A.L.F.A. 24-hp Torpedo model, to the bio-mechanical 2010 Alfa Romeo Pandion Bertone Coupé.

It was a great gathering of incredible cars to honor this legendary automaker as it enters its second century, a century that will thankfully see its return to the United States market. It's hard to say if today's models will stand the test of time like the classics gathered at Pebble, but we think that the 8C Competizione will look sensational out there on the 18th fairway in 40 years, just like it does today.

Okay, full disclosure - We have to tell you that we have a conflict of interest on this one. The Jaguar XK-SS is one of this author's top ten sports car designs of all time. This partially-civilized, D-Type-derived, semi-comp car is just plain awesome. Seeing one of them at a museum or event is like glimpsing the Pietà as you enter the Vatican - Its beauty can overwhelm you if you're not prepared to see it. Imagine our delight, then, when we learned that the organizers of the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance had put together a small gathering of XK-SS roadsters to celebrate Jaguar's 75th birthday. It's their birthday, and we get the presents.

Just 25 of these incredible machines were built during their short run - a tragic fire at the factory took nine of them and halted development of not just the XK-SS, but of the D-Type as a whole. Try as they might, the Pebble Beach folks simply couldn't get all 16 of the survivors together for this occasion...but how does a full dozen sound? Any event that has one SS in the field is pretty remarkable in our books. Having more than one is almost unheard of. Having a dozen on hand, all in one place at one time... in an almost perfect line on the Pebble Beach golf links with nothing behind them but the course and bay? Sublime.

Why does the XK-SS draw such admiration? Well, all you need do is look at it and you have your answer, but there is much more to the story. When Jaguar withdrew from racing at the end of 1955, they had a few spare D-Type chassis on hand. They also had something of a budget crisis at the time. Why not make a few changes for road use and offer the unfinished cars to the public? Jaguar added an extra seat, another door, a full-width windshield, luggage rack and folding top and the SS was born. It weighed but 2,000 pounds and had the D-Type's 250-horsepower 3.4-liter straight-six under its shapely bonnet. It only weighed about 100 pounds more than the full-on racer and was sold at a 30 percent discount over the D.

Doesn't that strike you as something of a bargain for a wild, hairy beast for the street? Steve McQueen thought so. In fact, the legendary actor and racer owned the same example twice. After buying one new, he had the interior customized by artist Von Dutch. He later sold the car but missed it so much that he bought it back a few years later. He had the car in his collection until the day he died. It's now in the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles, but was in Pebble Beach for the Concours on Sunday...along with eleven of its friends. Last year's announcement of the Pebble Beach Best of Show felt almost anti-climactic. The winning Horch 853 was so stunning that we instantly thought it would be the grand champion the moment we laid eyes on it.

In contrast, this year's show was a bit more wide open. There were literally dozens of cars that we thought had a chance to bring home the honors - but in the end it was The Patterson Collection's 1933 Delage D8S De Villars Roadster that brought home the gold.

Kudos to them and the rest of the winners this year. We've assembled a gallery of the champion below and are working on a few more galleries showing you all of the featured classes as well. Oh what teases those Bugatti folks are. They brought the new Veyron Super Sport to Laguna Seca during classic car week here in Monterey... and did a parade lap at a pace about one-tenth of the car's record-breaking 268-mile per hour top speed. We never expected it to take to the track in anger, but getting out of first gear would've been nice. Despite the slow speeds, we captured a bit of video that we think you might like.

Bugatti also announced a few details about the Super Sport that we hadn't heard before. First, the SS will account for the final 40 Veyrons built in the car's 300-unit run. Second, owners of the Super Sport might be saddened to learn that the car is going to be limited to just 258 miles per hour, 10 mph short of the terminal velocity it reached to set the land speed record for a production car back in early July. Bugatti was a bit tight-lipped on why, so we're speculating it might be the tires. Actually it could be that the gas tank will now empty in 30 seconds while traveling at the car's top speed, but who knows.

This year's Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion was actually the first one ever run, as there was a name change to go along with last year's change in management. The former Historics are now the Reunion, but name change aside, the event was still the same old week of wheel-to-wheel racing action. Now we know that you can see that kind of action on any given Saturday or Sunday, but the players are usually much, much newer.

Classic and vintage race cars from every era of motorsports are what make this such a wonderful event. There are literally hundreds of your favorite old race cars running in the nearly twenty classes of racing action. Legendary race cars like Ferrari SWBs and Lotus 23s, Porsche 962s and Trans Am Mustangs, Cobras and Vettes as well as F1 cars, Can-Am racers, NASCAR, Indy cars, and so on and so on. The classes take you from the under 1500 cc Minis up to the 1,000-horsepower 917Ks, with almost everything imaginable in between.

We were out there for hours and hours watching, listening to, feeling, smelling and enjoying these vintage racers, and we've assembled a sizable gallery to help convey what that was like. Click any image below to see our massive high-res gallery.

While we've heard rumblings that Porsche was going to show its hot new 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept here at Pebble Beach, it appeared that the car was only going to be shown to a select few at private events scattered around the Monterey Peninsula during the week.

Well, today at the Pebble Beach Lodge, site of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the company surprised us by driving the hybrid supercar up to the concept lawn for all to see - and hear. They did a quick turn around after sitting still for a second and as the V8 rumble died away, the car started moving forward again. A couple of people were taken by surprise as they thought the driver may have forgotten to engage the parking brake, but no, the car had switched over to battery power.

We shot a little video and took a few pics as we pushed through the massive scrum surrounding the car when it finally came to rest. Follow the jump to see the video and click below to see our high-res images.

UPDATE: Porsche has revealed that the 918 Spyder actually made its driving debut a couple days earlier on a closed road in Monterey. The company kept the drive a secret, though produced a nice video of their own that really shows off how the car sounds under its own power. Added after the jump.

2010 Concours d'Lemons - Click above for high-res image gallery

Monterey's main event - the Concours d'Elegance - is underway on the 18th hole at Pebble Beach, but before the winner takes to the podium, here's what the rest of us poor, oil-soaked wretches can related to.

The second annual Concours d'LeMons played host to the tired, huddled masses at the Toro Regional Park, with a random assortment of French, German, Japanese and American iron that will never grace the surgically manicured lawn behind The Lodge.

We started off watching a shortened VW van doing wheelies and stoppies in the parking lot, then took in the sights and smells of a rotary-powered Beetle, an Opel GT coated in Compuware 'Vette livery, a 1948 Davis Divan, a few Pacers, a 2CV, a Gulfed Datsun 1600 and, yes, an Aztek, complete with full camping gear.

Pebble Beach is fast becoming one of the best places for new car debuts. Besides seeing the McLaren MP4-12C, Fiorvanti SP1, Perana Z-One, Morgan EvaGT, Jaguar XK175, Jaguar XJ75 Platinum, Boss 302 Mustang, Veyron Super Sport, Lotus Exos T125, Lotus Evora GT4 Cup, and so on and so on, we just got to see the new Bentley Continental GTC and GTC Speed 80-11 Editions. These 80-11 models, designed exclusively for the North American market, will be limited to just 80 units each. The "11" in the title refers to 2011, the model year of these specials.

These are basically trim packages, adding things like 20-inch, 14-spoke polished wheels, and red calipers on the Speed, but they at least look tasteful. While the 80-11 Editions will be available in any Bentley color, they've introduced a new color - Midnight - that will be exclusive to these models.

If the wheels or special color don't tip you off to the special nature of these vehicles, you might be able to spot them by their little Union Jack badges on the front fenders. Check out the full press release after the jump for more details and be sure to peruse our gallery as well.

Dan Gurney is one of America's most accomplished motorsports personalities. Drawn together for this year's Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion were a couple dozen examples of the cars that helped transforme Gurney into a living legend. Dan got behind the wheel of over 50 different types of cars during his 312-race driving career. His All American Racers (AAR) team was responsible for creating and campaigning some 157 more race cars piloted by 66 different drivers over a period of about 35 years. Gurney's touch was felt in Formula 1, sports cars, NASCAR, Indy, Trans Am, Can-Am, Formula Ford and Formula 5000.

Click through the gallery and you'll see cars like the dark blue Eagle Gurney-Weslake V-12, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful Grand Prix cars ever built. The Henry Ford Museum also shipped out the same red Ford GT40 Mk IV that Gurney and A.J. Foyt drove to victory in the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans. That win marks only All-American victory in the legendary 24-hour enduro's storied history. When Gurney took to the winner's podium after the race, he spontaneously shook his congratulatory magnum of champagne and used it to spray everybody within range. That victory celebration has been copied by countless racers ever since.

Other highlights from the gallery include some of the Eagles that played major roles at Indianapolis in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as the Toyota GTP Eagles that defined that era of IMSA Sports car racing. There's also his Formula 1 Porsche; his game-changing, rear-engined Indy 500 Lotus-Ford; the 1960 "Birdcage" Maserati that he and Stirling Moss drove to victory in a rainy and fog-shrouded Nürburgring 1000 km race; his 1963 NASCAR Riverside 500 winner; the Can-Am "McLeagle" and a 1970 Trans Am series AAR 'Cuda just to name a few. RM Auctions always reserves its most prestigious cars for Saturday night during the Monterey car week, and this year's lineup of vehicles was one of the most impressive in recent history. No less than 14 cars broke the million dollar mark, although the highlight of the auction, a 1958 Ferrari 250 TR, failed to meet its reserve price despite a $10.7 million offer on the table. Here's a rundown of the million dollar cars at the auction:

The Jaguar XKR175 isn't the only special kitty making its debut out in Monterey. Jag's new limited-production coupe is joined by the one-off XJ75 Platinum concept created to honor of the brand's 75th anniversary. Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance attendees will find it parked on the Concept Car Lawn.

Pearlescent white paint provides a stark contrast to the big saloon's blacked-out grille, D-pillar, and custom 22-inch wheels. Inside, black leather seats get quilted, diamond-stitch suede inserts. The same material also adorns the headliner. Additional glitz comes courtesy of the Bremont Watch Company, which is responsible for the bespoke clock installed in the XJ75's console.

If the 470-horsepower supercharged 5.0-liter V8 doesn't provide enough entertainment, the XJ75 Platinum also features a 1,200-watt, 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system. The Morgan Motor Company has been making new cars all along, but some people seem to have forgotten that fact as most of their "new" models looked a heckuva lot like their old models. That started to change with the introduction of their Aero cars a few years ago - and we predict the name "Morgan" will be a little more common once their latest concept hits showrooms. The company took the wraps off their new EvaGT in Pebble Beach on Sunday, right in front of the Pebble Beach Lodge on the concept lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. We had seen a partial sketch a few weeks ago, but holy wow is this car stunning in person. There's a full press release after the jump and a gallery of high-res pics for you too, but the basic stats are these: It uses a 3.0-liter BMW straight six that produces 306 horsepower, a six-speed automatic or manual transmission, weighs just 2,755 pounds, gets 40 miles per gallon (Imperial) and can scoot from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.
