Formula One is boring, say the detractors. It's always the same drivers and teams who win. Nothing new ever happens. That's what they said, at least, until this season.

With an unprecedented six world champions on the grid holding a total of fourteen titles between them, this season has been one big wild card. So far five different drivers from five different teams took the checkered flags in the five races so far. And not all of them rank among the aforementioned champions.

But if the season has been unpredictable until now, would Monaco - traditionally the least predictable grand prix of all - prove even more so? Keep reading to find out.
Continue reading 2012 Monaco Grand Prix does the full Monte Carlo [spoilers]

2012 Monaco Grand Prix does the full Monte Carlo [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 27 May 2012 23:43:00 EST.
Few marques get auto collectors riled up quite like Ferrari, and of classic Ferraris, few are as highly sought-after as the legendary Testa Rossa. We're talking, of course, about the 50s-era roadster (as opposed to the 80s-era cheesegrater supercar), and the originals continue to fetch top dollar (or euro) whenever and wherever their fortunate owners are willing to part with them.

That when and where came this past weekend in Monte Carlo during the Historical Grand Prix of Monaco where RM Auctions sold some highly desirable classic metal. Topping the list was the rare 1957 Ferrari 625 TRC Spider you see here, one of only two built, which sold for a whopping €5,040,000 - equivalent to over $6.4 million at today's exchange rates. That's considerably more than the $4m four-cylinder 500 TRC that RM auctioned last year, but substantially less than the record $12m it garnered for a 250 TR in 2009.

Of course the Testa Rossa wasn't the only car sold at the event, which brought in an astonishing €33.5 million (~$43m) in sales on 87 percent of all lots sold. In fact it wasn't even the only Ferrari represented there, though it was the most expensive by a wide margin. A 1966 Ferrari 206 S Dino Spyder and a 1952 Ferrari 225 Sport Spyder 'Tuboscocca' (one of only 12 Vignale Spyders produced) each fetched €2.5 million ($3.2m), a rare factory Daytona Spyder brought in over €1 million ($1.3m), the car which Michael Schumacher drove to the 2000 Formula One World Championship and that Ferrari hydroplane each brought in over €800k (about a million greenbacks).

Other notable racing machinery sold at the auction included a Peugeot 908 LMP (which won several Le Mans Series races), a Lamborghini Gallardo LP600 GT3 (raced by Blancpain CEO Mark Hayek in the Super Trofeo series), a Ferrari FXX Evoluzione and a pair of Ducati Desmosedici MotoGP racing bikes. Follow the jump for all the juicy details and scope out the headline Testa Rossa in the high-res image gallery above.
Continue reading 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa sells for $6.4M in Monaco

1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa sells for $6.4M in Monaco originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 May 2012 12:33:00 EST.
If the idea of building a four-seat hard-top convertible supercar in Holland strikes you as off-the-wall, then its racing counterpart should blow your mind. We're talking about Savage Rivale, the markers of the Roadyacht GTS and the competition-spec GTR model it just unveiled at the Top Marques show in Monaco.

Packing upwards of 700 horsepower from a turbocharged 6.2-liter V8, the Savage Rivale GTR is said to be good for 2.8-second sprint to 62 miles per hour and a 360-km/h (234-mph) top speed. With those capabilities, the race-ready Savage is earmarked to tackle the Nürburgring Norschleife lap record for four-door automobiles, a distinction which (to the best of our understanding, anyway) currently belongs to a Subaru Impreza WRX STI driven by rally ace Tommi Mäkinen for Car and Driver in 2010 to a 7:55 lap time, edging out Pikes Peak legend Walter Röhrl in the Porsche Panamera Turbo at 7:56 the previous year.

Only 69 examples are slated for production. We're still waiting on final specifications to be released, but in the meantime you can check out the gallery of high-resolution images from its unveiling in Monte Carlo in the gallery above.
Savage Rivale GTR earns Top Marques in Monaco originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 May 2012 18:32:00 EST.
Legends come and legends go when it comes to supercars, but few remain etched as indelibly in our hearts and minds as the McLaren F1. Still capable of trouncing 99% of the performance machinery being built today, the legendary F1 is one icon whose successor has been anticipated arguably more than any other.

Since the end of its production run in 1998, McLaren has gone on to produce the SLR for Mercedes-Benz and branch out on its own once again with the MP4-12C (pictured above in Monte Carlo). But as capable as these machines have proven, everyone's been waiting for the F1's true successor to come rolling out of Woking. And now, like a child anticipating Christmas, we just may have that launch date to look forward to.

According to reports, McLaren Automotive is planning to unveil the new seven-figure, 800-horsepower hyper-car not at a major auto show and not at its own dedicated event, but at no less a celebration of speed than the Monaco Grand Prix.

The 70th running of the most iconic of Formula One races, which McLaren has won no less than 15 times (more than any other team), is on the calendar for May 27, so if the rumors prove accurate, we've only got a few months to wait.
McLaren to unveil F1 successor at Monaco GP originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 16:29:00 EST.
There are any of a number of places you'd expect to find a Ferrari: at the race track, on the auction block, in the showroom, parked in front of the swankiest restaurants in town... To see one in the water usually spells trouble, but history is not without its exceptions.

Back in the 1980s, Italian boatbuilder Riva collaborated with Ferrari for a rather Testarossa-inspired speedboat, but long before that, the House that Enzo Built lent its expertise and 4.5-liter V12 engine to Achille Castoldi to build the hydroplane power boat you see here.

Castoldi was bent on setting a new speed record on the water, and with this spectacular watercraft - dubbed Arno XI - he did just that. The Ferrari-powered vessel hit an astonishing 150.19 miles per hour at Lake Iseo in northern Italy on October 15, 1953. That's mighty impressive in its own right, but what's even more astounding is that the record stands in the 800kg category to this day.

To get there, Ferrari and Castoldi took the same Type 375 4.5-liter V12 engine that powered José Florian Gonzalez to his first grand prix victory at Silverstone, marinized it and fitted two superchargers to crank out more than 600 horsepower.

Now Arno XI is heading to the auction block in Monaco, where RM Auctions expects it will fetch around $1.5 million. Whether you've got that kind of cash or not - and whether or not Monte Carlo is in your travel plans for May - you can pull up alongside it in the gallery of high-resolution studio and archival images above.
1950s Ferrari-powered world record hydroplane heading to auction in Monaco originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 14:30:00 EST.
Car accidents are never fun and often expensive. In certain parts of the world, accidents can be push expenses into the stratosphere, and Monte Carlo has reportedly just played host to such a fender bender. A woman was driving a Bentley Azure near the Monte Carlo Casino when she doubled-down on a nearby Mercedes-Benz S-Class. That scrape led to the Azure meeting a Ferrari 430, Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche 911.

For the drooling bodyshop owners reading along, the UK's Daily Mail notes this collision involves over a million dollars worth of machinery. Total damage estimates are reportedly much more modest, however, somewhere in the neighborhood of $65,000, but judging by some of the pictures we've seen, such estimates seems laughably low.

Adding insult to injury? The driver and passengers of the Bentley droptop couldn't get out of their car. Hundreds of tourist snapped photos of the carnage while the occupants of the Azure could only sit and smile for the cameras.

Every racing series has its iconic race. F1 has Monaco. NASCAR has Daytona. Indy and Le Mans hardly need any elaboration. And rallying has Monte Carlo. The thing is, the Monte Carlo rally hasn't been part of the World Rally Championship for several years now. But that's about to change.

The legendary event - organized by the same Automobile Club de Monaco that puts on the Monaco Grand Prix and a number of vintage racing events - dates all the way back to 1911, and aside from notable breaks for a couple of world wars, has been held pretty much ever year since. From 1973 through 2008, it was an integral part of the World Rally Championship, but after that it went to the rival Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

A landmark announcement, however, reveals that the Monte Carlo Rally is returning next season to the WRC, but not at the expense of the IRC. Instead, the round will act as the season opener for both rally championships.

The Italian Rally is also scheduled to return next season. An anticipated rally in Abu Dhabi, however, was excluded from the 2012 WRC calendar, which encompasses 13 rounds mostly in Europe. The Jordan Rally, which was so problematic this season, was also excluded, with overseas rounds held only in New Zealand, Mexico and Argentina. However, unlike F1, whose schedule is also set by the FIA, the Latin American rounds are not paired, but instead punctuated by a return to Europe for the rally in Portugal. Follow the jump for the full schedule.
Continue reading Monte Carlo rally returns next season to World Rally Championship

Monte Carlo rally returns next season to World Rally Championship originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 07:58:00 EST.
The funny thing about speed is that it's relative, at least in a cognitive sense. Sure, you can measure the pace at which a moving object travels over ground, water, air, or even space. But place a Formula One race car on a wide-open track-say, Turkey's Istanbul Park, for example-and it doesn't look or feel like it's going nearly as fast as the same car does along the tight, winding streets of Monte Carlo. That's what makes the Monaco Grand Prix so exciting. This year's especially, packed as it was with nail-biting action. Follow the jump to read how it went down.

If you want to pick up a new supercar, there are few better places to do so than at the Top Marques show in Monaco. This year's Monegasque exposition featured a staggering array of exotic machinery packed into close proximity, and for the first time included a closed-off section of the street course used for the Monaco Grand Prix, placed at the disposal of automakers and interested customers for test drives.

Among the debuts this year was the Porsche Cayenne-based Tornado, made by Gemballa as its first new product since the mysterious passing of its namesake founder. Along with the Panamera-based Mistrale, the Tornado was set to be available for test drives around the iconic Rascasse corner by the Monte Carlo marina, but it didn't quite make it there. Not because of a problem in transit or some mechanical issue preventing it from starting or anything like that, but because an unnamed Arabian sheikh snapped it up before anyone else could get their hands on it. A mere 16 seconds after the doors opened, according to show organizers. Think he got good terms on a finance deal?

2011 Mini Countryman WRC in Monte Carlo - Click above for high-res image gallery

Back in the 1960s, the Monte Carlo Rally ran from Marrakech to Monaco (the opposite direction from the Paris-Dakar) and the old-guard Mini made headlines when it took the checkered flag in '64 an '67. These days, the Dakar rally has moved to South America, and the much shorter Monte Carlo rally is part of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge instead of the premier World Rally Championship. But though the scene has changed, Mini's back, and back in a big way.

That Mini will be challenging the WRC with a competition-spec Countryman prepared by Prodrive isn't news - we've been covering that story for over a year now. But as the final version enters its last stages of development before the 2011 season, the Mini WRC has taken a rapid trip down memory lane by reuniting with its '60s forebear at the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique.

Not only did the trip prove an excellent photo opportunity - the vintage Mini rally machine driven by the same Ruano Aaltonen that finessed it to victory in '67 appearing alongside its much larger successor - but also gave us our first look at the rally-ready Countryman WRC before it undergoes its final testing in Spain. After that, it will challenge a few select stages at the hands of Kris Meeke and Dani Sordo before contesting the full calendar next year. Follow the jump for the full press release, and don't miss out on the photos in the gallery below.

Some terms we use in the automotive lexicon are absolute. Others are relative. Take "subtle" for example. Most wouldn't call painting a car bright red "subtle", but when you compare it to the last rally-edition Skoda Fabia we reported on, that's exactly what this is. Whereas the S2000 edition Fabia vRS sported full livery taken from the company's IRC-winning S2000 Fabia, this one's decidedly more low-key, but not without its dose of flair.

The Monte Carlo edition celebrates 100 years of the namesake rally - and 110 years of Skoda's motorsport program - with a red and black paint scheme. While the body is painted bright red, everything else has been blacked out, from the roof to the 17" alloys, including the mirror housings, grille and smoked headlamps. The red and black theme continues inside with either black or red and black seats, complemented by black roofliner, and color-keyed steering wheel, shifter and handbrake lever.

Based on the SE specification and available with a range of engines from 1.2 to 1.6 liters, the Fabia Monte Carlo will make its debut at the Monegasque rally later this month. Details after the jump with photos in the gallery below.
One of the benefits of having an F1 team at your disposal is that, in the off season at least, you've got some of the world's best professional drivers on call for test driving duties. And promotional detail, too.

In this case, we're talking about Mercedes-Benz - specifically its upcoming 2012 SLK and star driver Nico Rosberg. Vehicle engineer Michael Scheer shot some footage riding shotgun in the new roadster around Monte Carlo as Rosberg gave us a glimpse of what to expect from the new SLK, demonstrating as well that trick Magic Sky Control tinting roof.
We'll admit that we're not exactly up-to-date on the rules or goals of a lowrider hop off. It's been awhile since we dusted off the Monte and threw down, but the last time we checked, flipping the car wasn't part of the plan. Unfortunately, the gentleman in the video after the jump must have missed that memo. In the quest for ever more height for his remote-controlled monstrosity, his Chevrolet goes shiny side down after a few epic bounces. Impressively enough, the car doesn't flip the easy way. Oh no. Instead of just rolling over and playing dead, the big coupe goes vertical before falling on its head.

After watching the car pancake itself, we're suddenly fans of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's new focus on rollover protection. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.

IndyCar racing has the Indianapolis 500. Sportscars, Le Mans. NASCAR, the Daytona 500. Rally-raid has Dakar. And while the Formula One calendar may not count any one round higher than any other, if there's one headline event, it's surely the Monaco Grand Prix.

Held on the streets of Monte Carlo, the Monaco Grand Prix is one of the oldest - and easily the most iconic - races on the calendar. It's also one of the slowest, in terms of average speeds, and one of the most technically difficult and challenging grands prix of the year. Tight corners and narrow straights also make it notoriously difficult to pass. Yet the seaside principality always makes for an exciting venue. So did this year's headline race disappoint? Follow the jump to find out.

We've seen F1 teams pulling all kinds of shtick in an effort to edge out the competition. But embedding diamonds into the helmets and steering wheels? Well, it seemed to work in 2008 for Lewis Hamilton, and he, for one, is hoping it'll work again this year at the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix.

McLaren has partnered with Steinmetz Diamonds to carry off the bedazzling, creating commemorative wreath emblems for both its world champions. The results were unveiled on Wednesday at Steinmetz's villa in Monte Carlo, and both Hamilton and Button will be using them during this weekend's race. Only in Monaco, kids. Details in the press release after the jump.

Call it a sign that the recession is abating, or count it as an indicator that, for the extremely wealthy, the recession hardly ever crossed their minds. But any way you cut it, classic Ferraris continue to fetch record prices at auction. And exceptional though it was, this past weekend's Sporting Classics of Monaco event, held by Canadian firm RM Auctions, was no exception.

The event marked the first time that the venerable auction house - a growing force to be reckoned with on the classic car scene - held an event during the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. Yet RM still managed to rake in a mind-blowing €33,235,917 ($45 million), matching the all-time record for single-day auction results, which RM itself set in Maranello in May 2007.

The headline results were boosted by the sale of a rare 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina SWB, which went for a high bid of €2,800,000 ($3.8 million), exceeding its estimate and fetching the highest price ever paid for such an example. Several other Ferraris went for seven-figure prices as well, including a 1957 250 GT Tour de France ($3.2M), a 1959 250 GT California Spyder ($2.8M), and a pair of mid-60s-era 275 GTBs that each fetched a million and change.

The rare Prancing Horses were joined by such other notable examples as a 1960 Maserati Birdcage ($3.3M), a 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C Zagato Spider ($1.2M), a Le Mans-spec '63 Shelby Cobra 289 ($1M) and a whole slew of Rolls-Royce classics. Follow the jump to delve further into the auction results, and check out the high-resolution images of the headline Superamerica in the gallery below.

We've wrapped up our Beijing Motor Show coverage as April closes and May begins, signaling the end of the major international auto show season. We'll have a spring and summer full of concours, racing, meets, exhibitions and more to keep us busy though until the new car reveals pick up again in October at the Paris Motor Show.

This month racing fans will be busy with Formula 1 action from Spain and the legendary Grand Prix de Monaco. NASCAR stops at Richmond, Darlington and Dover before the two-week extravaganza that leads up to the Coca-Cola 600. IndyCar starts off with the Road Runner 300 from Kansas City, but the month of May means only one thing to open-wheel fans - The Indy 500.

The ALMS guys and gals head to Monterey for their annual crack at the corkscrew of Laguna Seca. WRC fans can see action from New Zealand and Portugal, while Rally America stages the Oregon Trail Rally. The NHRA schedule finds the Southern Nationals in Atlanta and the Summer Nationals in Topeka following the conclusion of the Midwest Nationals that start at the end of April.

Other racing action in May includes the Speedfest at the Classic Motorsports at the Mitty at Road Atlanta, Jefferson 500 at Summit Point, Historic Grand Prix of Monaco, Portland AHRMA Classic, SCCA Pro Racing at NJMP, SVRA Spring Vintage Weekend, 20th Annual Vintage Racing Celebration at NHMSNew Jersey Vintage Grand Prix and Family Festival, and the Olthoff Racing VIR Track Day with the SVT Cobra Mustang Club.

May auctions include two biggies - The RM Auctions Sporting Classics of Monaco and the Mecum Spring Classic.

Concours, meets and shows are beginning to fill out the calendar again as the weather improves and May is the month for the Newport Concours as well as Keels and Wheels, All-AMC Show in Gettysburg, Britfest 2010, Long Island Car Show, Pindar Vineyards - Run Out East, The Petersen Museum Discovery Days: Pop-up Greeting Cards, East Coast Boardwalk National Car Show, The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, MOPARS in May, Meguiar's Orange County Get-Together, Saratoga Automobile Museum Spring Invitational and Auto Show, Marin Sonoma Concours d'Elegance, and Micro/Mini Car Cruise - Bear Mountain Silver Mine Roundup among many others.

Alec Issigonis' Mini began production in 1959. By 1960, there were half a dozen works teams entering the car in the Rally Monte Carlo. By 1964, Mini had won with the pilotage of Irishman Paddy Hopkirk, and in 1967, the automaker won again with Rauno Aaltonen at the wheel.

Those two gents got behind the wheel of a modern Mini JCW Cabrio (top down in the snow!) and tackled the Col de Torrini again, in the process sharing a few thoughts on the cars and the racing. We can't say we'd want to be in the back seat, but it's terrific to watch and to remember where Mini and the checkered flag really got to know one another. Follow the jump to see the vid.

Let's see The New York Times ignore this! Next Spring, Kings Dominion amusement park in Virginia will be introducing an all-new giga-coaster not only named "The Intimidator" after the late, impossibly great stock car king, but featuring cars designed after Dale Sr's signature black Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

We're not entirely sure what a "giga-coaster" is either, but we'll go out on a limb and assume it's bigger than a regular roller coaster. A lot bigger. How giga? How about a 305-foot main drop? Exactly, dang. Not only that, but lucky riders will be hurled through time and/or space at speeds over 90 mph. Which for a coaster is very, very fast. Oh, and that whole thing about the NYT ignoring Earnhardt's death? 100% false. And if you'd like to watch a teaser virtual video of the Intimidator coaster in action, make the jump where you'll not only find the footage, but the official press release as well.

Gallery: Dale Earnhardt Intimidator Roller Coaster

[Source: intimidator305.com]

Another race, another week of wondering whether the other Formula 1 teams would make enough progress to catch Brawn GP. Saturday's qualifying session for the Monaco Grand Prix looked pretty familiar, save for a sorely missed flash of red on the front row. This week's top three? Not surprisingly, Brawn's Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello bracketing Ferrari's former champion, Kimi Raikkonen. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was fourth, with last year's runner-up, Felipe Massa fifth in the other Ferrari. Massa had shown the updated F60's potential by qualifying fourth last time out in Spain, but it was refreshing to see both Ferraris in the front three rows for a change. Would KERS help Kimi grab the lead going into turn one? Would Brawn show any chinks in its previously impervious armor? Would Vettel somehow get through to bring Red Bull its second victory of the season? Follow the jump to find out.

Gallery: 2009 Monaco Grand Prix

Continue reading Spoiler Alert: 2009 Monaco Grand Prix recap

Spoiler Alert: 2009 Monaco Grand Prix recap originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 May 2009 08:59:00 EST.
