Car enthusiasts, rejoice! Our beloved racecar in the evergreen Hasbro board game Monopoly has been saved. The Monopoly-loving world has spoken, and the newest game piece is... a cat. In a democratic move, Hasbro let the Internet decide which token would be kicked off the game board, and, in the end, it was the lowly iron that will now get locked away in the Monopoly vault. Bye-bye iron, hello kitty.

The boot and the wheelbarrow were close to getting canned as well, while the dog and racecar were the two most popular pieces in the voting. As for the new piece, the cat was chosen over other possibilities including a helicopter, guitar, robot and diamond ring.

Scroll down to watch a cheesy short video welcoming the new player's piece as it navigates all 40 squares of the board game hoping to collect $200 each time it passes "Go."
Continue reading Monopoly racecar saved [w/video]

Monopoly racecar saved [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Feb 2013 14:58:00 EST.
One of the reasons for Monopoly's nearly 80-year reign, and its hundreds of millions of copies sold, especially in the last few decades, has been game maker's willingness to heavy-up on the special editions. And, the occasional inclusion of a Prius token notwithstanding, the iconic racecar playing piece has been all that we motoring enthusiasts have had to get us fired up about the game. You know, other than naked capitalism and low-level fraud. (What? Like you never slid a few extra hundred under your side of the board...)

Now, in another attempt to spice up the old girl, the makers of Monopoly are threatening to lock up one of the classic tokens... forever. That means that either the Scottie dog, top hat, thimble, battleship, wheelbarrow, iron, shoe or the ever-loveable racecar is going to be stripped from the gaming icon. Replacing the lost token will be one of the following hollow imposters: a diamond ring, a guitar, a toy robot, a cat or a helicopter.

Monopoly is putting the choice of both banished and replacement tokens up to its fans, and allowing for votes to be cast on the game's Facebook page. Obviously, it's our duty as car nuts, one and all, to vote for to support for ol' Racy himself. Follow your heart.
Continue reading Cast your vote to save the Monopoly racecar

Cast your vote to save the Monopoly racecar originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Jan 2013 19:15:00 EST.
Investigators are currently expanding the scope of an automotive component price fixing probe. Officials in Australia, the U.S., Europe and Japan are collaborating to discern the breadth of the issue. So far, 20 automotive suppliers have been identified as being part of the investigation, though it's thought that authorities are looking into a significantly larger number of companies. In fact, a government official has already declared this investigation the largest such probe in U.S. history. Those that have been identified so far are publicly traded and must disclose such investigation to their shareholders by law. Private companies have no such obligation. According to Crain's Detroit Business, the companies in question supplied parts to both automakers and the aftermarket.

So far, only one company has been convicted of price fixing in the investigation. Furukawa Electric Company of Japan has been handed a fine of $200 million and three U.S.-based executives are headed toward incarceration. Sentencing has yet to occur for those workers.

The report says the scandal spreads across automotive systems, and subpoenas have been handed down for raids against at least 19 suppliers over six supply sectors. Even so, those subpoenas may be aimed at securing evidence against a company's competitor, not the manufacturer itself.
Massive auto parts price fixing probe spreads to four continents originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 11:00:00 EST. When General Motors ditched its 20 percent stake in Fuji back in October 2005, Toyota snapped up 8.7 percent and the two have been undertaking a series of joint ventures since.

But that wasn't nearly enough for the Toyota Motor giant that's getting closer and closer to the #1 global automaker spot with each passing day. An acquisition of Subaru would bring them even closer, if only they could.

Continues after the jump.

It's official, our favorite Monopoly piece did not survive Hasbro's update in its new Here and Now edition. While the trusty racecar (What? You thought we would be fans of the top hat?) can still be found in classic versions of the game, the new 'Here and Now' Limited Edition Game will include the more environmentally friendly Toyota Prius as an icon for modern day transportation. Besides the game piece update, the rest of the game has be revamped to reflect today's world. Airports have replaced railroads, the monetary demominations are significantly higher, and the Community Chest and Chance cards have been updated. Also of note is the change to what properties are listed on the board, "I'll take Times Square New York for $4 Million". If you're a Monopoly fan, we suggest you go out and snap up your own box of the Monopoly Here and Now Limited edition, but if you invite us over to play, be prepared to see our smuggled racecar do donuts as we build a hotel on the Fenway Park property (good thing we passed the Go to Jail space!).
