The Dodge Dart, Cadillac XTS and Lincoln MKS all failed to earn a "Recommended" rating from Consumer Reports. When it came to the compact Dart, the organization's testers thought the vehicle offered a quiet cabin, solid-feeling chassis and nimble suspension, but the new model ultimately fell short of the coveted rating due to powertrain issues. The institute's reviewers found the base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to be underpowered and noted "drivability issues" when the available turbocharged 1.4-liter four was paired with the optional dual-clutch transmission (some of our editors disliked it paired with the six-speed manual). CR also dinged the latter powerplant for sounding "raspy." For what it's worth, we think the forced-induction engine offers an excellent and playful exhaust note, but that's just us.

As for the XTS, CR lauded the car for its luxurious cabin, but the vehicle's experience was dulled by its finicky CUE infotainment interface. Overall, the big Cadillac scored much higher than its cross-town rival from Lincoln. While testers found the American luxury sedan to offer a quiet ride and quality fit and finish, they felt the MKS delivered a "cramped driving position, ungainly handling, uncomposed ride, and limited visibility." Ouch. At the end of the day, both cars fell short of rivals from Japan, Germany and Korea. Check out the full press release below with more details, along with CR's musings on the Chevrolet Spark and Lexus ES.
Continue reading Dodge Dart falls short of Consumer Reports Recommended, Caddy XTS and Lincoln MKS, too

Dodge Dart falls short of Consumer Reports Recommended, Caddy XTS and Lincoln MKS, too originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Nov 2012 18:28:00 EST.
I hail from Cleveland, and that means I'm familiar with sports franchises that are always falling short of championships. The Indians, the Browns, the Cavs - they've all come close, but being a resident of C-Town means learning to appreciate the effort more than a reward that never seems to come. So I can appreciate the situation in which Lincoln finds itself today, one where the past is full of repeated attempts to be competitive, and looming on the future's horizon is the next hope on which everything hinges.

That next hope for Lincoln is not the car you see here, but rather the smaller, all-new 2013 MKZ sedan. Like LeBron James entering Gund Arena for the first time, the MKZ will enter dealerships this fall as the brand's chosen savior, markedly more stylish, advanced and desirable than anything offered by Lincoln in recent memory. And that would make this car, the 2013 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost, one of the other 20 guys whose names I can't remember who played alongside LeBron during his rookie season.

Being in the shadow of the Next Big Thing makes it hard for anybody, or anything, to stand out and be noticed. And yet, those 20 other guys suited up each night next to LeBron, and the MKS will continue as Lincoln's flagship large sedan despite the luster of the new MKZ right next to it. Lincoln, however, has given the MKS some significant upgrades for the 2013 model year, and we're here to see if its off-season adjustments can make a difference to buyers willing to give Lincoln another chance.
Continue reading 2013 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost

2013 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Nov 2012 11:57:00 EST.
There's profits in numbers.

That's going to be the approach to new vehicles at Lincoln, Automotive News says. Lincoln will focus on high-volume vehicles instead of low-selling flagships and halo vehicles. That means a steady diet of alphabet soup loaded with MKZ's, MKX's and MKS's for dealers and no more fancy flagships or other vehicles that don't meet the volume metric. We'd rule out high-performance sport cars as well, but Lincoln, by definition, rules that out.

Those big-ticket vehicles costs hundreds of millions of dollars to develop, and, while they may bolster a brand's reputation, they wouldn't help Lincoln's bottom line. So the next big Lincoln to arrive will be a compact car known as the MKC. Then we'll see redos of the MKX, MKT, MKS and Navigator.

Dumping high-level aspirations may reek of desperation, but for Lincoln, these are desperate times. Sales for the brand were down 11 percent in July and two percent for the year, according to Autodata Corp. The brand currently lacks prestige, style or even an unique platform.

In July, Lincoln sold 6,975 units, making it a distant last place out of mainstream luxury brands. Inifiniti had the next lowest total, selling 11,619 units.
Lincoln to focus on volume models, not halo car originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Aug 2012 15:45:00 EST.
Don't get ahead of yourselves: This is not yet another Lincoln-badged Mustang rumor post, the likes of which seem to crop up every few years. Instead, Ford's wayward luxury division is reportedly hoping to gain access to the bits and pieces that will underpin the next-generation pony car - specifically, the MacPherson front and independent rear suspension setup.

Having this rear-wheel-drive platform could do a number of good things for Lincoln. For example, it could finally give the brand a proper entry-level luxury fighter for the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS, Infiniti G and so on, though brand officials will still insist that the all-wheel-drive MKZ suits this need just fine.

According to Car and Driver, this forthcoming rear-wheel-drive architecture could be used to better place the awkward MKS in its mid-size luxury segment. Rather than being simply a more expensive Ford Taurus, the MKS could transform itself into a genuine 5 Series or CTS fighter. Perhaps it could even look something like Lincoln's 2007 MKR concept shown above. Furthermore, a proper rear-wheel-drive flagship could be in the cards for Lincoln, though the Mustang's platform would need to be seriously overhauled and stretched to handle such a task.

But for Ford, as C/D points out, would it really make sense to go through all the trouble of creating a bona fide rear-wheel-drive sedan and not just slap a Blue Oval badge on it? If the automaker truly wants Lincoln to survive, then many pundits would say yes.
Lincoln pushing for access to next-gen Ford Mustang platform originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 19:29:00 EST.
Lincoln has released the first 30-second ad spot for the 2013 MKS, with its seventeen intial seconds spent covering the era of Lincoln glory from 1922 to 1976. The ad almost feels like an apology for the MKS, as if the ad team really wanted to sell the 2013 MKZ but was assigned the penalty-box MKS and had their protestations silenced with, "Just make something!"

We think the MKS deserves a little more love than that.

For a while there, it looked like Ford forgot about Lincoln, and dismal sales numbers reflected the marque's lack of attention. But just when it was beginning to look like Lincoln was on its last leg, Ford's luxury arm unveiled the refreshed MKS and MKT at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Those models may not go far enough to usher Lincoln back to relevance, but chief Lincoln designer Max Wolff mentioned at the show that the real changes begin with the 2013 MKZ, which was teased during a video prior to the reveal of the revamped MKS.

We'll see what the new MKZ looks like at the Detroit Auto Show, but at the least we can say that Ford is again paying attention to Lincoln. Wolff seems excited about the future of the brand, and he focused some of his excitement in a new video that takes a look at the Lincoln design studio. Designing a vehicle certainly isn't as easy as grabbing a pencil and paper any more, but today's tools look much cooler if you ask us. Hit the jump to watch the video for yourself.
Continue reading Lincoln offers peek into new styling direction with design boss Max Wolff

Lincoln offers peek into new styling direction with design boss Max Wolff originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 21 Nov 2011 15:30:00 EST.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and for Lincoln, that all-important first stride is represented by the 2013 MKS. The big Lincoln sedan has been given a mid-cycle refresh that includes upgraded power, a newly refined suspension and a restyled beak, all of which are on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The newly redesigned front end of the MKS is likely to gather the most attention when it hits the streets in spring, as Lincoln designers have added more and thinner elements to the grille. Lincoln has also tweaked front and rear fenders, added a new hood and fresh HID headlights along with new LED taillamps.

Engineers would likely argue that the mechanical changes for 2013 are even more significant, as the MKS benefits from a host of suspension tweaks and more power. The 3.7-liter V6 now boasts 300 horsepower, 26 more than the 2012 model. Despite this welcome infusion of grunt, Lincoln tells us that this big sedan now gets three more miles per gallon. A base V6 MKS will achieve an estimated 19 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The EcoBoost 3.5-liter engine will continue to output 355 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque.

The ride and handling of the MKS should benefit from Lincoln's new Continuously Controlled Damping, which can enact changes at a hair-raising clip of 20 times per second. The MKS will also feature Lincoln Drive Control, which gives the driver the ability to switch from Normal, Sport and Comfort driving modes at the press of a button. And speaking of switchgear, the 2013 MKS will feature available MyLincoln Touch, which has been tweaked for quicker performance and improved ease of use.

The new face of the MKS is more attractive in person than it is in photos, but we get the feeling that the more telling changes for the Lincoln brand will present themselves when the 2013 MKZ arrives at the Detroit Auto Show in January. If Ford really hopes to gain traction with its luxury marque once again, a much more thorough product rethink is clearly in order. Hit the jump to read over the Lincoln press release.
Continue reading 2013 Lincoln MKS hits the Hollywood spotlight

2013 Lincoln MKS hits the Hollywood spotlight originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 14:01:00 EST.
Think about the position that Cadillac was in over a decade ago; that's about where Lincoln is today. The rebirth of a brand doesn't happen overnight, so until Lincoln debuts its next generation of fully redesigned and reimagined products, subtle evolution and continued refinement are the order du jour. Hence the 2013 Lincoln MKS.

The greenhouse of Lincoln's flagship sedan carries over unchanged, but the front and rear fascias, fenders, hood, HID headlights and LED taillamps are all new and punctuated by the reworked grille. That last bit is far and away the most radical change, making the 2013 MKS come off as less baleen and slightly more elegant.

Stuffed behind the standard 19-inch aluminum wheels (or optional 20s) is all new braking hardware to address one of the MKS' most glaring dynamic faults, with the front discs upsized to 13.86-inches - more than an inch larger than the outgoing stoppers - and 13.58-inch rotors in the rear. More impressive is the standard fitment of Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD), which monitors and adjusts the suspension up to 500 times a second to balance handling and comfort. CCD works in conjuction with a torque vectoring differential and the new Lincoln Drive Control, which modifies ride, throttle, shifting, steering and traction control on the fly when changing the system from Comfort to Sport mode.

The powertrains are also largely carry-overs, with the standard 3.7-liter V6 getting a boost in horsepower from 274 to an even 300, all while returning 19 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway in FWD spec. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 - standard with AWD - outputs 355 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque and is projected to return fuel economy ratings of 17/25.

On the tech front, the MKS comes equipped with the recently reworked MyLincoln Touch system, with standard Operator Assist, WiFi hotspot functionality and a tweaked UI to match the updated interior. Also included for 2013 is the new Lane Keeping System and Lane Keeping Aid, which alerts the driver if he or she is drifiting out of a lane and applies a small amount of torque to the wheel to bring things back in line.

We'll have full impressions of the MKS from the floor of the LA Auto Show later today, but in the meantime, get all the details in the press release below the fold.
Continue reading 2013 Lincoln MKS evolves new nose, bigger brakes

2013 Lincoln MKS evolves new nose, bigger brakes originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 00:01:00 EST.
Yesterday, Lincoln released the teaser you see above on its Facebook page, showing what's in store for the automaker's revised design language that's coming soon (we're guessing it's the hood and fender of the redesign MKT). Lincoln states that its new styling direction will be "forward-looking and more elegantly crafted," and it appears that we'll get our first glimpse at the fruits of the company's labor at the LA Auto Show next week.

Autoblog reader Tony tipped us to this page on the LA Auto Show website, which lists all of the vehicles that will debut at the Los Angeles Convention Center next week, and both the Lincoln MKS and MKT are listed under the "world debuts" section. Makes sense, since we've already seen the refreshed versions of the Ford Taurus and Flex on which the Lincoln vehicles are based, respectively. When asked, a Lincoln spokesperson was unable to confirm that we would see the new sedan and crossover in LA.

Unlike the current vehicles, the 2013 MKS and MKT are expected to differ greatly from their respective Ford kin. While not officially confirmed, sources within the automaker have suggested that the updated vehicles will use new running gear in order to fully differentiate them from their Ford counterparts. Of course, Ford's EcoBoost engine technology will be on hand, though other enhancements like suspension and steering upgrades will also likely be in the cards.

Stay tuned for the full details from the LA Auto Show next week.
Lincoln teases new design language; 2013 MKS, MKT headed for LA Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Nov 2011 13:28:00 EST.
Ford's hourly workforce is having a tough time ratifying the tentative agreement struck between the Blue Oval and United Auto Workers union last week, despite that deal being the most generous among those made this year between the Big 3 automakers and their respective unions. For example, Ford workers will receive a $6,000 signing bonus if the contract is ratified, compared to $5,000 for General Motors workers and $3,500 for Chrysler workers. GM was the first to strike a tentative deal with the UAW in September and has already seen its contract ratified, while Chrysler's deal is the most recent with voting expected to begin soon.

Earlier this week, UAW Local 900, a chapter that represents three Ford plants near Detroit, rejected the deal by a narrow margin. Automotive News is now reporting that Ford's Chicago Assembly plant is joining them in rejecting the offer, though this time "overwhelmingly." Chicago Assembly handles production of the Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKS and Ford Explorer. Of the 2,317 workers who voted, 77% cast their ballots against the proposed deal.

At the same time, the UAW is reportedly making it known that, should the tentative agreement not be ratified, the organization will strike. Of the three major U.S. automakers, both General Motors and Chrysler workers lost the right to strike while those companies were restructuring in bankruptcy. Only Ford workers can strike, that company having avoided bankruptcy and its restrictions, and they may do so if the deal is not approved by the majority.

As of this writing, the UAW Ford Department Facebook page reports that 3,256 workers (45.4%) have voted to ratify the contract and 3,915 (54.6%) have voted against. That's a far cry from Ford's 41,000-strong union workforce, and the union has until October 18th to finish voting.
UAW workers in Chicago reject Ford deal, strike possible originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 15:58:00 EST.
Lincoln is moving away from its current grille design, a source tells AutoWeek. Using diplomatic terms, the source says the new design will be less pronounced, which will hopefully translate to "a less disfiguring overbite" in the metal. The MKR-inspired waterfall grille has been applied across the entire line of Lincoln vehicles with varying degrees of success. What works on an MKS makes an MKT resemble a baleen whale.

There's a pile of cash being thrown at Lincoln right now, and with good reason - the brand sorely needs to differentiate itself from the lineup of parent company Ford if it has any hope of competing in the wider luxury marketplace. The new grille design may show up at the Los Angeles Auto Show on refreshed MKS and MKT models, which are expected to ride atop revised suspensions, redone brakes and updated steering.
Lincoln waving goodbye to the waterfall grille originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Sep 2011 11:30:00 EST.
The Lincoln lineup is in desperate need of a design intervention, and Automotive News reports that help is on the way. Ford product development boss Derrick Kuzak reportedly told dealers that Lincoln will receive seven new or refreshed models by 2014, including a little love for the long-ignored Lincoln Navigator.

The Navigator will reportedly receive the twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine option for the 2012 model year, giving large luxury SUV buyers a more fuel efficient option. The Navigator could also receive some design tweaks, but we're not expecting anything close to a full redesign.

The Lincoln sedan lineup will also get some attention, with the MKS and MKZ receiving substantial updates for the 2013 model year. The MKZ will reportedly be completely remade, with all-new sheetmetal that should look very little like its Ford Fusion counterpart. The MKS will also distance itself from its more pedestrian platform-sharing Ford Taurus, with a sleeker design and more premium materials.

Lincoln may also diversify their crossover offerings, including a new compact 'ute based off the Ford Focus platform that should arrive during the 2013 model year. The MKX, which was just re-penned for 2011, is also scheduled to receive an all-new platform based off Ford's global mid-size architecture for 2014. The MKT could receive a minor refresh for 2013, but then again Ford could wind up ditching the big crossover altogether or relegate sales of the model to livery and fleet customers.

A key component to future Lincoln redesigns will be minimizing any connection between the luxury make and any Ford siblings. Changes could include far more differentiated sheetmetal, different wheelbases and unique powertrains.
Lincoln planning seven new/improved models, includes Navigator EcoBoost originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Aug 2011 08:28:00 EST. This is going to be a serious effort, and the early signs are encouraging.

The Ford Motor Company is finally marshaling the resources and money to transform Lincoln into a true luxury brand again. While the company is guarded in discussing the full details of its plan, it's divulging enough for now to let the world know that this is going to be a serious effort. And the early signs are encouraging.

The linchpin to this turnaround will be daring new products and significantly upgraded dealerships. And the key to accomplishing that is a new organizational structure for Lincoln. Up through the 1950s, Lincoln was a stand-alone "house" with its own headquarters, designers, engineers and assembly. The new organization will not recreate that original "house" concept, but it's a big step in the right direction.

Lincoln says it will not abandon its traditional customers, but it must attract a new generation of buyers, people with a different psychographic mindset than those who have been buying Town Cars for the last quarter century. Yet, while it may not abandon those buyers, saying they'll suffer from benign neglect may not be too far off the mark.

Of course, other luxury brands are not sitting still, and new entrants like the Hyundai Equus are getting into the game. Everyday that goes by only makes Lincoln's comeback all the more difficult. Even so, the Ford Motor Company has formidable resources and here's how it plans to put them to work.

Of Detroit's three automakers, Ford may have emerged the strongest from the economic crisis, but its luxury division, Lincoln, isn't looking too rosy these days.

While Cadillac has been steadily rejuvenating itself with exciting new vehicles, Buick has reinvented itself from a stodgy old-man's brand into a fresh face of entry-level luxury, and even Chrysler has a strategy in place by pairing up with Lancia, Lincoln appears to be spiraling downwards. The days of luxury behemoths like the Town Car and Navigator are behind us, and the brand's latest products have failed to fill the void.

Sources anticipate Lincoln's sales will drop below 80,000 units this year, but a plan is reportedly in place to nearly double that number by 2015.

So how does Lincoln expect to get there? According to reports, through a large cash injection from its parent company. Sources state that Ford is preparing to invest $1 billion into Lincoln over the coming years.

So what will Lincoln get for all those zeros? As many as seven new products. The Navigator will reportedly be phased out by 2016, and the MKT is tipped to be dropped in favor of a luxury version of the Ford Explorer. A Focus-based C-segment sedan and crossover are also in the works, along with a new MKS sedan.

Dearborn reportedly plans to differentiate new Lincolns from their Blue Oval-badged counterparts with fresh sheetmetal, higher specification levels and stronger engines. Will that be enough? It had better be, as Lincoln is reportedly asking its dealers - many of which lost their Mercury lines when that brand was shuttered last year - to invest heavily in their showrooms as an integral component in bringing Lincoln up to the level at which it can compete with its German rivals.
Ford pumping $1 billion into Lincoln revival originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 13:02:00 EST.
It's been years since Lincoln had a credible performance option, but if recent rumblings are true, the situation could be rectified soon.

Nearly every luxury automaker has some kind of branded performance line, be it BMW's M, Mercedes' AMG, Lexus' F or Audi's S and RS models. To compete in that rarified air, Lincoln needs to join the fold. But what form could it take?

With Lincoln buyers snatching up all-wheel-drive models in droves and turbocharged EcoBoost engines beginning to proliferate throughout the line-up, these two technologies could be leveraged to give Lincoln a much-needed injection of excitement. Crank the boost on the turbocharged MKS - something to the tune of the 365-hp engine found in the Taurus SHO - fit a rear-bias AWD system and Lincoln could have a serious sports sedan offering on its hands. Do the same to the MKZ fitted with the EcoBoost 2.0-liter four-cylinder and maybe a revamped dual-clutch gearbox, and Lincoln's off to the races with a fun and fuel-efficient four-door.

But would it find favor with performance-minded buyers?

One Lincoln spokesperson we contacted wouldn't confirm or deny plans to enter the fray, only saying that the automaker is "fully committed to making Lincoln a world-class luxury brand" and that it is "studying the luxury automotive market very closely in defining Lincoln's future." Wishy-washy as that might be, if Lincoln wants to compete with the Bimmers and Benzes of the world while pulling itself away from an aging customer base, making a play for the performance set should be part of the plan. And we suspect we'll hear something more solid by year's end.
Lincoln considering performance line originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 May 2011 09:58:00 EST.
Audi may be the king when it comes to premium vehicles fitted with all-wheel drive. Lincoln, however, must be taking notes because its customers prefer their luxified-Fords with the four-wheel motion as well. Every model in the automaker's current lineup is available with all-wheel drive, and lots of folks are checking that particular box on the order form.

It seems 2011 will go down as Lincoln's assault on four powered wheels. So far this year, 72 percent of MKT customers have opted for AWD while 62 percent of those purchasing the MKX have done the same. Of course, as you move into the automaker's sedans these numbers begin to fall, which is to be expected. Still, 46 percent of MKS shoppers choose the all-wheel-drive version and a quarter of MKZ sedans purchased are prepped for bad-weather driving.

Let's not forget the Navigator (yep, they still make it), which gets all-wheel drive 62 percent of the time.

Lincoln is enjoying this shift in consumer desire, as all-wheel-drive vehicles command anywhere from $1,850 to $6,890 extra when compared to their non-AWD counterparts. Full press release from Lincoln after the jump.
Due to a pigment shortage stemming from the March 11 earthquake in Japan, Ford has had to stop taking new orders for cars in Tuxedo Black, and is limiting orders of three shades of red. Officials from Ford say they're working on another source for the pigment as you read this, and have enough cars in each color to satisfy demand until production resumes.

The paint shortage affects the F-150 and Super Duty lines of pickups, as well as the Explorer, the Expedition, Focus, Taurus and the Lincoln MKS and Navigator. Ford's slowdown follows General Motors, who slowed production of pickups in Shreveport, Louisiana, as well as compact cars in Europe following parts shortages.

Honda, Toyota and Nissan have all experienced slowdowns as a result of the quake, though none have had to limit color choices.

Talk about a sleeper. The folks at Hennessey Performance have gotten their hands on a Lincoln MKS fitted with Ford's new EcoBoost V6 engine, and the end result is pretty darn cool.

In its standard form, the twin-turbocharged MKS produces 355 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, but by adding Hennessey's MaxBoost 435 upgrade kit, that very same engine now cranks out a whopping 435 hp and 405 lb-ft. That means the Hennessey MKS is capable of putting down 0-60 times of only 4.5 seconds (that's as quick as a BMW M5) and will run the quarter mile in just 13 seconds at 106 mph.

The MaxBoost 435 package includes a dual cold air induction system, as well as a polished intercooler piping upgrade, engine management software upgrade, and a stainless steel cat-back exhaust. What's more, Hennessey installs all of the equipment itself and backs the package with a one year/12,000 mile warranty. Without any crucial suspension or brake upgrades, we doubt that the MaxBoost MKS will outrun an M5 on the track, but it'll certainly blow the doors off of your Grandfather's Lincoln any day of the week. Hit the jump to see a video of the MaxBoost 435 MKS in action.

2010 Lincoln MKT - click above for high-res image gallery

In a nutshell, the problem with Lincoln is that on the Taurus SHO launch, Ford brought along an Audi A6 4.2 for comparison's sake. Says one Lincoln dealer, "It's hard to sell a $48,000 MKS when the Ford guy down the street has a Taurus with the same features for $10,000 less." Put another way, despite the polarizing new sheetmetal, it's still obvious to consumers that the MKZ is a Fusion, the MKS is a Taurus, the MKX is an Edge and the MKT is the Flex.

"I have more dedicated Lincoln-Mercury employees than Ford Motor Co. does. They don't have any executives who wake up every day thinking about these brands." Says Lincoln/Mercury dealer owner Chris Lemley to The Detroit News in what might just be the "ouch!" comment of the year.

Part of the problem is without question the not-so-great state of the economy, with luxury sales tanking by nearly 25 percent in 2009. Still, with Lincolns priced lower than the competition, one might think they'd be selling better. For instance, the Lincoln MKT (priced at $49,995 with all the fixins) matches up quite well with the much more expensive Audi Q7 ($61,825). However, "If people were cross-shopping Audi and Lincoln, that would be great," said one analyst. "Audi buyers are shopping for a style statement. They're not even looking at Lincoln. Lincoln still has not gotten back up to first-tier luxury." Hence all that dealer fury.
