Toyota allegedly wants pricing comparable to Mitsubishi's all-electric car, which is set to debut this month to fleet customers in Japan (both vehicles are eligible for government subsidies).<br /><br />Toyota's plug-in vehicles will be powered by lithium-ion batteries co-developed with Panasonic EV Energy Co. and are expected to offer a full-charge range between 20 to 30 km (12.4 to 18.6 miles) on battery power alone. According to the paper, Toyota would not comment on future product plans.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090704/ANA02/907049996/1186&amp;AssignSessionID=373322640144936">Automotive News</a>, subs. req'd]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/05/toyota-plans-to-manufacture-up-to-30-000-plug-in-hybrids-in-2012/">REPORT: Toyota plans to manufacture up to 30,000 plug-in hybrids in 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 05 Jul 2009 13:05:00 EST. <br />When the average enthusiast thinks of Mitsubishi, the first thing that jumps to mind is likely the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/10/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-mitsubishi-evolution-x-mr/">Evolution</a>, but the Japanese automaker's bread is buttered by the sales of large SUVs. This means that profits are pretty tough to come by these days as anything that guzzles gas has rapidly seen itself falling out of favor. In light of this fact, Mitsubishi now says that it has halted development of everything that isn't eco-friendly. SUVs and large cars are out; electric cars, plug-in hybrids and small cars are in. What does this mean for future developments for the Evo platform? We don't know, but it doesn't sound promising.<br /><br />According to CEO Osamu Masuko, the automaker can't abandon its SUV roots entirely, so the future strategy will be two-fold: continue to offer larger cars like the Lancer and Galant and four-wheel drive SUVs in hybrid form, while focusing on fully electric machines on the smaller end. The first fruits of Mitsubishi's new green plans may be production versions of the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/tag/imiev">i MiEV electric car</a>, but plug-in hybrid versions of its larger cars and SUVs are likely by 2013. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mitsubishi-i-miev-sport-air-1/low/">Mitsubishi i MIEV Sport Air</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mitsubishi-i-miev-sport-air-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/09imievsportair_hi_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mitsubishi-i-miev-sport-air-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/09imievsportair_hi_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mitsubishi-i-miev-sport-air-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/09imievsportair_hi_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mitsubishi-i-miev-sport-air-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/09imievsportair_hi_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20090202/ANE03/901309934/1179">Automotive News</a> - sub. req'd]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/02/mitsubishi-focuses-development-on-green-cars-plug-in-hybrid-c/">Mitsubishi focuses development on 'green' cars, plug-in hybrid coming in 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 02 Feb 2009 18:02:00 EST. It has just introduced a new research platform, the i MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle), a four-passenger EV based on the company's podlike i kei car. <br /><br />The i MieV will make its public debut later this month at a Japanese alternative vehicle conference. After that, two Japanese power companies will be provided with i MiEVs for internal research on how to integrate EVs into their business plans, including the development and deployment of a rapid-charge infrastructure. In January, Mitsubishi will bring in two additional power companies and commence fleet testing with all four to gauge whether or not an EV is a commercially viable proposition for all parties. <br /><br />The i MiEV electric motor is mounted in the standard engine's rear-midship location and generates 47kW (63 hp) peak power. The car has an operating range of approximately 80 to 100 miles with a top speed of 80 mph and is actually much torquier than its conventionally-powered counterpart, generating 130 lb-ft to the standard i's 69. <br /><br />(Press release, diagram, specs after the jump)<br /><br />[Sources: Mitsubishi, LA Times]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/12/mitsubishi-looks-ahead-with-an-electric-i/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mitsubishi looks ahead with an electric i</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/12/mitsubishi-looks-ahead-with-an-electric-i/">Mitsubishi looks ahead with an electric i</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 12 Oct 2006 17:24:00 EST.
