In advance of this year's 24 Hours of Nürburgring race, and as a "thank you" to German motorsports fans, Mercedes-Benz has arranged quite the driving demonstration at the legendary German track. Seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher will pilot a the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W02 - the team's 2011 F1 car that carried the Silver Arrow name - around the Nordschleife. As far as we know, this will be the first time that an F1 car will have lapped the North Loop since Nick Heidfeld drove a BMW Sauber car around it in 2007.

This will be far from Schumacher's first go with the Nürburgring: In 2011 he drove a classic Silver Arrow Stromlinie W196 (pictured above) for a demo lap around the Grand Prix track, and in 2007 he infamously punted a Ferrari prototype on the Nordschleife.

There's no word from Mercedes as to how exactly Schumacher will drive for his 'Ring run this time. Heidfeld's lap was slowed massively by his car wearing hard, demonstration tires and for slow-downs to film the event. We have every expectation that Schumi will be subject to the same demands of safety and public relations.

Of course, having the all-time fastest lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in your CV is something that we'd guess might tempt the über-competitive driver, and he'll certainly have the car to make that happen. Stefan Bellof holds the record for the fastest-ever lap of the 'Ring in its current configuration and length, with a time of 6:25.91 in 1983, at the wheel of a Porsche 956. (Niki Luada has the record at the original length, with a lap of 6:58.6 in 1975, in a Ferrari 312T.) Pundits analyzed the fast bits of Heidfeld's 2007 run, and figured his full-pace time, on admittedly unsticky tires, would have clocked in at around 6:12.

Again, we're not suggesting that Schumacher will have the green light to drive at full speed, but it does sound as though the now one-year retired driver is amped for the opportunity. Said Schumacher, "Posting a lap in a modern Silver Arrow on the most beautiful and most testing circuit in the world, what a brilliant mix - it's every motor racing driver's dream!" We'll keep our fingers crossed on May 19, and hope that the lap is a hot one.
Continue reading Schumacher to drive Mercedes F1 car on Nürburgring Nordschleife

Schumacher to drive Mercedes F1 car on Nürburgring Nordschleife originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 26 Apr 2013 18:31:00 EST.
You will probably remember the ads for the Ford Figo hatchback in India, the ones that showcased the extra large boot of the little hatchback by joking that you can fit three of your enemies in the trunk. One of the ads had Michael Schumacher in the front seat, obviously pleased about having Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso tied up in the back. But the other two had Paris Hilton and ex-Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi up front and three bound and gagged women in the back - in Hilton's case (shown above), it was the Kardashians.

This did not go over well, and Reuters reports that certain employees at JWT India have been fired over the matter. It is also reported that the images weren't actual advertisements, nor were they part of an actual campaign; JWT said they "were never intended for paid publication, were never requested by our Ford client." A JWT rep said the employees who created the ads did so on their own, Ford commented to Automotive News that the ads were "part of a creative exercise intended to test concepts for an advertising competition."

The problem, if the story is to be believed, is that the employees skipped the regular review protocols and uploaded their work to an ad industry site - they were found on Ads of the World. That page, like the employees, has been removed.
Ford bondage ads reportedly trigger firings at Indian ad agency originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 14:30:00 EST.
Apparently sensibilities in India, at least in the case of some Ford marketing partners, are downright lascivious at times. Case in point are a new series of print ads, presumably touting the vast cargo capacity of the Ford Figo hatchback, that involve more than a whiff of T&A, S&M and other sexy abbreviations.

In all seriousness, the advertising campaign is taking some major heat in the Indian press for being outrageously sexist. All three images - which seem to be produced by a graphic artist with some Heavy Metal work in his/her portfolio - show bound and gagged people stuffed into the Figo's boot. With a tagline reads, "Leave Your Worries Behind." one version features a peace-sign throwing Silvio Berlusconi holding hostage three buxom and barely clad women, all wearing ball gags with hands and feet bound. Charming. Another version shows Paris Hilton similarly kidnapping a trio of Kardashians, while a third (tame in terms of the clothing at least), has Michael Schumacher toting Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, and Lewis Hamilton.

Clearly in bad taste, at least, the Indian source also questions the timing of these risqué Ford ads, as the follow by days new anti-rape legislation passed by the Indian Parliament. Ford has responded in a statement, that it and its advertising partner (JWT India) "deeply regret" the ads, and claim that they "never should have happened."
Ford of India in hot water for Figo celebrity bondage ads originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Mar 2013 11:35:00 EST.
With so many different cars, competitions, rulebooks and drivers gunning for wins each weekend in various racing events all across the world, how do you go about crowning the best of the best? Put more simply, Who is the best racing driver in the world?

No single event or series is ever going to answer that question properly, but the annual Race of Champions at least does a good job of choosing the most talented drivers in their respective disciplines and lining them up against each other and the clock.

There are actually two winners, one country and one driver. Yesterday, Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher defeated Romain Grosjean and Sebastien Ogier to take the Nations Cup to Germany for the sixth year in a row. Want to see how it all went down? Scroll down for two videos, one short recap and one full three-hour-long version.

Come back later today at 7:00 PM EST to see who's crowned the Champion of Champions during individual events!
Continue reading Vettel and Schumacher win 2012 Race of Champions Nations Cup for Germany, again

Vettel and Schumacher win 2012 Race of Champions Nations Cup for Germany, again originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 16 Dec 2012 09:56:00 EST.
In Texas, during what will go down as one of the absolute best inaugural Grand Prix weekends in series history, there was yet another Formula One record set by his lordship, the soon to retire Michael Schumacher of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 squad. And, no, it wasn't his finishing in 16th place and lapped by the leaders that got the attention. Nor was it his recent purchase of a 500-acre horse ranch in Texas.

While watching the broadcast television coverage, the chief commentator announced that, upon the completion of Lap 10 of the 3.4-mile Circuit of the Americas, Schumacher became the most traveled Formula One pilot in history. That lap saw him clock 80,000 kilometers - or 49,710 miles - in competition in an F1 car over 19 seasons. By the time he finishes the 2012 F1 season finale on November 25th in Brazil, that'll be over two-times the 24,901-mile circumference of planet Earth driven in a Formula One car.
This feat outdistanced the record set by his former Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello, though it is not known if Barrichello came to the Mercedes trailer after the race to congratulate the seven-time F1 champ. Rubens was, after all, a guest of honor over at the Ferrari compound.
Michael Schumacher has driven around the Earth twice in an F1 car originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Nov 2012 15:45:00 EST.
Seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher said this morning that he will retire at the end of the current season. Just last week, Mercedes-Benz announced that Lewis Hamilton would be replacing Schumacher for the 2013 F1 season.

Schumacher didn't completely quell the rumors of his taking a spot with another racing outfit next season - Sauber has been mentioned as a potentially soft landing place for the German - saying only that the retirement, "...might be forever."

In an interview with the Associated Press following the Japanese Gran Prix, Schumacher recounted, "Although I was able and capable of competing with the best drivers that are around, at some point it's time to say goodbye and this time it might be forever."

Schumacher retired for the first time following the 2006 F1 season, choosing to return with Mercedes in 2010. Despite being the most successful driver in the history of the sport, Schumacher has underwhelmed in the intervening years since his comeback.
Michael Schumacher retiring from F1 again, 'might be forever' originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Oct 2012 10:57:00 EST.
In 1995, a 10-year-old Lewis Hamilton walked up to McLaren team principal Ron Dennis and declared "I want to race for you one day." That fateful moment began a relationship between Hamilton, Dennis, and McLaren which culminated in the 2008 Formula One Championship. A relationship that, at least professionally, has come to an end.

Word from the UK's Telegraph is that Hamilton has left McLaren for the Mercedes-Benz factory team in a three-year deal that could be worth as much as $100 million. The departure of the 27-year-old driver from McLaren marks one of the biggest driver transfers in motorsport in recent memory. Though the German F1 team has won only a single race since returning to the sport in 2010, Hamilton and Mercedes both appear to be betting heavily on the turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine specifications for 2014.

The move has major ramifications for both teams. At McLaren, team principal Martin Whitmarsh said they had "no plan B" for their lead driver, however, it has already announced Mexican driver Sergio Perez as Hamilton's replacement in 2013.

The more controversial fallout is that Hamilton now replaces Michael Schumacher for next season. The seven-time World Champion first retired from Ferrari at the end of the 2006 season, returning to the sport in 2010 with Mercedes, where he has struggled. In reaction to the announcement, Schumi said that he would concentrate on the remaining races this season, and that he wished Hamilton well.

Hamilton's recent history with McLaren has been highlighted by salary disputes and comments on team tactics. Telegraph writer Tom Cary openly ponders the influence of XIX Entertainment - The London-based firm represents Hamilton, and stands to make more money from the new contract. As for Schumacher, there is no word on his plans after the current Formula 1 season.
Hamilton in, Schumacher out at Mercedes F1 in $100M deal originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 10:02:00 EST.
An article making the rounds indicates that Mercedes-Benz is considering changing its approach to Formula 1 come 2014, but the piece seems a combination of the highest speculation and badly translated French. What has been established is that the newest Concorde Agreement, the document that governs F1, has not been signed by all the teams even though Bernie Ecclestone said there was unanimous agreement more than a month ago. Admittedly, these things can take a while, but previously the hold-up was thought to come from Mercedes, wanting more say in the sport's governance and a larger piece of the financial pie.

According to an English translation of a report in French magazine Auto Hebdo, those aren't the only issues on Mercedes' mind. The translated report asserts that in 2014, when the new V6 engines come in, Mercedes is contemplating pulling back its official involvement and focusing on engineering as opposed to running an entire team. To keep one leg in, the team would be rebaptised as AMG F1 - it's Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 now - but remain run by Ross Brawn, and Mercedes would focus on supplying engines. The translated report says that Michael Schumacher would remain in the cockpit, but the original Auto Hebdo piece states that another role outside the cockpit would be found for Michael. Part of the reasoning for a departure is also attributed the lack of major success and the bribery scandal involving Gerhard Gribkowsky.

Added to the confusion is the fact that the Concorde Agreement awaiting full ratification will govern the sport until 2020. Three months ago it was written that "Ecclestone told CNN that the teams had agreed to sign up to Formula One until 2020, although Mercedes' exact position remains unclear." Depending on how M-B planned to restructure, if it's thinking of doing so at all, it would be strange to sign up for a seven-year commitment when it's toying with an exit in less than 18 months. As with everything else in F1, we'll probably know what's really happening only a few moments before it actually happens.
Mercedes-Benz considering partial pullout of F1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 09:15:00 EST.
That Michael Schumacher has been less than successful in his return from retirement is no great secret. The seven-time world champion - empirically demonstrable as the best driver in the history of motorsport - has yet to score a single podium finish in the past three seasons since returning to the grid. To his credit, the German driver has stuck it out in an effort to rediscover the pace that put him and Ferrari on top for so many years prior to his retirement. But surely he's due for a win sometime soon. He has, after all, done it a staggering 91 times before.

Pirelli just so happens to agree. The Italian rubber company that supplies all the tires to Formula One is expecting that Schumacher could stand to claim the checkered flag in the European Grand Prix this weekend at Valencia. And they ought to know: Schumi has always been a driver who knows how to get the most out of his tires - particularly during the good old days when Bridgestone was creating special compounds around his driving style.

If Paul Hembery, Pirelli's motorsport guru, proves right, it would make for the eighth race winner in as many grands prix so far this season. And in the process it would prove that Schumacher hasn't lost his touch, or has found it again. Although Schumacher has won the European Grand Prix six times before - more than any other driver - those were all at the Nurburgring. The race was only moved to Valencia after he retired. And of course with five other world champions on the grid, each of them younger and at least as hungry for the win, it's still anyone's race. We'll be watching to see how it goes down.
Pirelli predicts Schumacher to win this weekend's European Grand Prix originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Jun 2012 08:28:00 EST.
Sportsmen - whether you'd classify them all as athletes or not - are some of the wealthiest people in the world. And every year, The Sunday Times puts out a list of the richest among them. The list takes all their assets into account - including salaries past and present, endorsements and other investments - and ranks them by their net worth. So who comes out on top?

Golfers, if you can believe it. Tiger Woods tops the Top 20 list worldwide at £538 million (~$870M), joined by Arnold Palmer at No. 4 with £230M ($370M), Greg Norman at No. 9 with £174M ($280M) and Jack Niclaus at No. 11 with £158M ($255M). But just behind them are the racing drivers.

Michael Schumacher just trails Tiger with £510 million ($824M), making him the second richest sportsman in the world, by far the wealthiest racer, and within reach of becoming the first billionaire driver in the world. Little wonder, as he's the most decorated driver the world has ever known.

Also on the list are Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen, who tie for eighteenth place (together with baseball's CC Sabathia) at £100 million ($160M) apiece. But in between these Formula One drivers sits one Dale Earnhardt, arguably the biggest name in NASCAR, who ties basketball star Kobe Bryant at sixth place with £185 million ($300M) in assets.

Now if only someone paid us that much to drive around in circles, well...we'd still probably be blogging about cars, only we'd be doing it from onboard our own mega-yachts somewhere a lot more glamorous.
Michael Schumacher ranked second wealthiest sportsman in the world originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 May 2012 08:19:00 EST. Eighteen of the world's top drivers returned this past weekend to Düsseldorf's ESPRIT Arena to contest this year's 2011 Race of Champions. Up for grabs was glory for each driver's native land in the ROC Nation's Cup on Saturday, as well as individual glory and the title Champion of Champions in Sunday's elimination competition.

The races are held on the 1.2-kilometer ROC parallel track assembled within the confines of ESPRIT Arena, and this year's crop of vehicles with which to compete included the Audi R8 LMS, Skoda Fabia Super 2000, VW Scirocco, KTM X-Bow, RX150 rallycross buggy, ROC single- and two-seat buggies, and, according to RoC's website, a Chevrolet-powered NASCAR Car of Tomorrow race car.
Continue reading SPOILER ALERT: 2011 Race of Champions returns to Düsseldorf [w/video]

SPOILER ALERT: 2011 Race of Champions returns to Düsseldorf [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 15:29:00 EST.
The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe is going racing, and it has its eyes set on conquering the DTM series. That means the standard C-class Coupe gets the typical DTM outfit of a massive front splitter, seductively wide fender flares and a wing large enough on which to throw a party fit for Dance-centrum in Stuttgart.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe DTM AMG was introduced to the Frankfurt Motor Show crowds by racing greats Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg. It is a fitting reception considering the amount of wins Schumacher has, and just how German Rosberg is. The new C-Class DTM AMG racer will have to live up to both of those men on the racetrack, while also carrying on an impressive history set forth by Mercedes DTM cars of the past.

In 27 years, Mercedes DTM racecars have secured 84 victories in 156 races. Those wins also saw five driver's titles handed to the tri-star-backed teams. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe DTM AMG begins defending its heritage in 2012.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe DTM AMG OMG

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe DTM AMG OMG originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 19:04:00 EST.
Every year, the Race of Champions brings the best and brightest from all disciplines of motor racing together for one winner-takes-all blitzkrieg. Last year's event was hosted in Dusseldorf, and in 2011, the season-closer will once again return to Germany.

The spectacle is scheduled for December 3-4 at Frankfurt's Commerzbank Arena, an enormous, 50,000-seat venue that hosted soccer's World Cup in 2006. (The side-by-side track setup required for the RoC will likely reduce that capacity some.)

The first drivers to sign on at this early juncture are Germany's own Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher - the most recent and most successful Formula One World Champions, respectively. Although neither has won the individual event, the pair have taken the Nations Cup together the last four years running, and will defend their country's glory once again in front of a home crowd. Official announcement after the jump.
With a new race weekend comes a new video clip from Mercedes-Benz making light of the sometimes bitter rivalry between Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg, the company's Formula 1 teammates. This week's clip finds our heroes coming to the rescue of a pregnant woman stranded by a broken-down car.

Despite an impending rain storm and live birth, the woman and her husband can't decide whether Rosberg or Schumacher is the appropriate choice to get them to the hospital the quickest. On the one hand, there's Schumy's 7 championships. On the other, there's Rosberg's 2010 points tally, which doubled that of his veteran teammate. Click past the jump to see the drama unfold.

The internal rivalry between Mercedes GP Petronas drivers Nico Rosberg and the legendary Michael Schumacher is famous. They race almost as hard against each other as they do everyone else on the track, and exist in a world of tense equilibrium between teammates' friendly competition and bitter rivalry.

Mercedes-Benz has released a new clip that makes light of the rivalry while delivering a sharp message about this year's focus. After Rosberg and Schumacher go back and forth, each ordering the other a progressively expensive and more impressive bottle of champagne, Mika Häkkinen shows up to focus the pair.

The Finnish F1 legend orders both drivers a Red Bull, offering a not-so-subtle clue as to who Merc's gunning for this year. Webber and Vettel, you have been warned.
What the heck happened to Mercedes GP last season? The team showed at least as much promise as the three (Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull) that out-paced it at every turn - with Michael Schumacher coming out of retirement to drive for the defending championship team now backed by full factory support - but barely proved capable of keeping pace.

This could be our answer right here. When Brawn and company realized their transitioning team wasn't capable of mounting a serious challenge for the title, it shifted focus mid-season from the W01 they were using to the new W02 for this season. It was the same sort of strategy Brawn undertook when the team was still under the Honda name, and it netted both titles the following year.

Can the new W02 follow the same path? Is it better suited (along with the new Pirelli spec tires) towards Schumacher's driving style? Or will wingman Nico Rosberg prove capable of getting the better of him once again? Only one way to find out, and we'll all be watching. In the meantime, follow the jump for the full press release and the images in the gallery below.

Düsseldorf's Esprit Arena hosted this year's Race of Champions, making it the first time the event has been held in Germany and the first time it's been held indoors. The 1.2 kilometer track, consisting of an outside and an inside loop, would play host to one of the finest collections of motorsport champions ever assembled: Formula One World Champions Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb, 500cc motorcycle World Champion Mick Doohan, Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, World Touring Car champion Andy Priaulx and British Touring Car champ Jason Plato. However, it was a rookie from a country not known for its motorsports that took the fight to all of them and walked away with the belt. Make the jump for our detailed recap.

The 2010 Race of Champions, a motorsports event with global intrigue, is scheduled for November 27-28 and will be held at the ESPRIT arena in Düsseldorf, Germany. There are currently eight confirmed drivers gunning to be the number one worldwide wheelman.

Representing the United States will be 2007 NASCAR Champion Carl Edwards and 11-time X-Games Gold Medalist Travis Pastrana. Edwards ran in the 2008 ROC event along with Tanner Foust, who replaced Patrana after the rally-racer broke his hip a week prior to the event. Pastrana has competed in the Race of Champions as far back as 2005, including a stint in 2006 where he drove every round for the Stars and Stripes. Both Jimmie Johnson and Scott Speed were injured that year with no replacements lined up. Pastrana still managed to come in second that year.

The Race of Champions was started back in 1988 by rally extraordinaire Michèle Mouton and IMP president Frederik Johnsson. The goal was to find out who was the best rally driver, but the competition has expanded to allow competitors from all types of motorsport disciplines. In addition to Pastrana and Edwards, we know that Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost, Sébastien Loeb, Sebastian Vettel, Tom Kristensen and Andy Priaulx are all confirmed for the 2010 ROC.

Mark the date on your calendars now because that lineup (plus more drivers to be announced) is sure to provide plenty of breathtaking displays of driving precision, and hit the jump for a video.

Michael Schumacher's triumphant comeback has been anything but. The seven-time world champion has been consistently outpaced by his junior team-mate Nico Rosberg, who most recently scored a podium finish at this past weekend's British Grand Prix while Schumi could manage no better than ninth. The question on everyone's minds, then, has been whether he'll stay for another season.

According to Jackie Stewart, Michael could - or at least should - call it quits. Sir Jackie retired at the top of his game, a three-time world champion, and evaluates Schumacher's return from retirement as a mistake. Bernie Ecclestone seems to agree, but blames the team and the car they've provided, claiming that if Schumi were driving a Red Bull, he'd be back on pace immediately instead of languishing behind the wheel of a sub-par chassis. For Schumacher's part, the champ has conceded that his performance this season has eliminated his chance for the title, and that he's shifted his focus on preparing for the 2011 championship instead.

If he does retire at the end of this season instead of fulfilling his contract through 2012, who would fill Schumacher's seat? Related rumors suggest Kimi Raikkonen. The Finnish champion, who left F1 for the World Rally Championship at the end of last season, has been tipped to join Renault next season, but was reportedly visited recently by Mercedes racing chief Norbert Haug.

Every Fall, the Race of Champions stands as the season's final show-down between drivers from a wide variety of motorsport disciplines. But while the last few years have seen DTM champ Mattias Ekstrom and WRC czar Sebastien Loeb alternating for the individual crown, the Nations' Cup has been won the past three years running by the German team of Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. Against a backdrop of such international domination, it's little wonder that the event is heading back to Germany this year.

Reach way back into RoC history, and you'll discover that the second running of the event (after the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry outside Paris in 1988) was held in Deutschland, at nowhere less vaunted a location than the legendary Nürburgring. Since then, it was held in Barcelona and Madrid before moving to Grand Canary Island for over a decade, then back to the Parisian suburbs at the national Stade de France. The race was then held in London's Wembley Stadium before being contested overseas for the first time at the olympic Bird's Nest stadium in Beijing. This year, however, the season-capping event heads back to Europe.

The 23rd Race of Champions will be contested on November 26-27 at the Esprit Arena in Düsseldorf, a 50,000-seat soccer venue, at which the necessary tracks will be constructed. Schumacher and Vettel will be back again to defend Germany's honor in the Nations' Cup as well as challenge for the individual title of Champion of Champions less than two weeks after both finish off the Formula One season in Abu Dhabi. Video and press release after the jump.
