<br />If you were <em>this close </em>to purchasing an SLR but recent events concerning a guy named Lehman severely reduced your amount of disposable cash, then allow us to introduce you to the SL Carbonite. For the price of a 2003-2008 Mercedes SL, plus $47,400 for Carbonite's hood, fenders, front and rear fascias, lowered suspension and Mandrus 20-inch wheels, you can have an SL(R) for a song that's a lot less pricey than the Mercedes-McLaren. Carbonite has also said it will only build 20 of these cars per year, which means your money could get you even more exclusivity than the real thing. Of course, what your money can't do is erase the fact that you don't actually have the real thing -- but that hasn't stopped so many others... Check out the high-res gallery of doppelganger shots below.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sema-2008-carbonite-sl-r">SEMA 2008: Carbonite SL(R)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sema-2008-carbonite-sl-r/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/01_carb_sl_r_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sema-2008-carbonite-sl-r/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/02_carb_sl_r_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sema-2008-carbonite-sl-r/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/03_carb_sl_r_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sema-2008-carbonite-sl-r/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/04_carb_sl_r_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sema-2008-carbonite-sl-r/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/05_carb_sl_r_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/09/sema-2008-carbonite-sl-r-for-the-economic-downturn/">SEMA 2008: Carbonite SL(R) for the economic downturn</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 09 Nov 2008 16:31:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"><small>Click above for high-res gallery of Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 S Roadster</small></span><br /></div>
<br />As the era of the Mercedes McLaren SLR winds down to its conclusion sometime in 2009, Mercedes-Benz is releasing what may be the ultimate example of the breed. The SLR 722 S Roadster picks up where the 722 coupe left off dropping the 650-hp supercharged 5.5L V8 into the open top body shell. With a top speed of 220.6 mph, this may be the fastest open top production car ever built. And unlike the first generation Dodge Viper, Mercedes has devised a soft top that can withstand sustained 200 mph+ top speeds. Mercedes has tapped into McLaren's F1 experience to create the fully carbon-fiber body that can provide the structural integrity needed at those speeds. The semi-automatic top just needs to be unlatched from the windshield header manually before the rest of the process is handled by the electrical actuators. The vehicle dynamics are also aided by dropping the suspension by 10 mm at each end of the car and recalibrating the spring and damper rates. Only 150 examples of the 722 S Roadster will be made available starting Jan. 1 2009.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-slr-mclaren-722s-roadster">Mercedes SLR McLaren 722S Roadster</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-slr-mclaren-722s-roadster/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/677014_1218286_5616_3744_08c1171_18_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-slr-mclaren-722s-roadster/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/677015_1218289_4565_2736_08c1171_19_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-slr-mclaren-722s-roadster/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/677016_1218292_5616_3744_08c1171_20_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-slr-mclaren-722s-roadster/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/677013_1218283_5616_3744_08c1171_17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mercedes-slr-mclaren-722s-roadster/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/676996_1218234_5616_3612_08c1171_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Mercedes-Benz]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/29/mercedes-benz-reveals-slr-mclaren-roadster-722-s/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mercedes-Benz reveals SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/29/mercedes-benz-reveals-slr-mclaren-roadster-722-s/">Mercedes-Benz reveals SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 29 Sep 2008 12:33:00 EST. <p> </p>
<p>The images - which appear to have been released by the manufacturer itself - confirm our previous report that the roofless supercar will have little in the way of protection from the elements, with an F1-sized wind deflector screen as the only thing between the driver and the wind rushing by at breakneck speeds. Inspired by the original '50's-era 300 SLR, the new speedster will be faster than any previous SLR and be built in a small serial of 75 examples.</p>

A <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/02/racing-spec-mercedes-benz-722-slr-gtr-found-in-germany/">pre-production model</a> was spotted at the start of the month in Germany and this is likely to be the same car seen here.<br /><br />According to Auto Motor und Sport, the new hyper-performance Mac Daddy managed to complete the notorious Nurburgring Nordschleife or 'Northern Loop' in a blistering 7m 38s, but apparently can go even faster. Driving on the test day was McLaren test pilot Chris Goodwin, who was forced to take it slower than usual because of problems with the transmission. Further tests will continue between the 20th and 24th of this month near the village of Le Castellet in France. <br /><br />The car features the same 650hp supercharged V8 from the 'regular' SLR 722 but has been put through an extensive weight saving program, which sees almost 660 lbs. shed from the vehicle's curb weight. It's thought this new model has been developed as a homologation special for an upcoming FIA GT race car ,but no official word has been given.<br /><br />[Source: Auto Motor Und Sport]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/19/racing-spec-mcmerc-722-at-speed-on-the-ring/">Racing-spec McMerc 722 at speed on the 'Ring</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 19 Oct 2007 14:02:00 EST. <p />There isn't much left to do with a supercar. That's why they're called "super." Tuners of late, thankfully, seemed to be restraining themselves from going buck wild on them. On that note, with traditional British understatement, the tuning house Project Kahn has taken the Mercedes McLaren SLR and done, well, not all that much to it.
<p>The car gets Kahn's trademark RS-X wheels, 20-inch up front and 21's in the rear. It also gets a 60 HP power boost to 677, a lowered suspension and high-flow pipes. Kahn expands on the smattering of colors that Mercedes offers by providing custom leather upholstery and paint jobs. Sure, it's not much, but at this level of the financial stratosphere, every little bit of individual luxury counts, no?</p>
