Mercedes-Benz is taking steps to position itself amongst the automotive technology leaders with help from Google. This week at Google's massive I/O tech convention in San Francisco, Mercedes showed off its new DriveStyle App. Many of the features we're already familiar with, as they come directly from Google.
Automotive News Europe reports Ernst Lieb, the former Mercedes-Benz USA CEO, has lost a wrongful dismissal suit against his former employer. As you may recall, parent company Daimler fired Lieb claiming the 57-year-old executive used company funds to upgrade his personal home, though he has denied the claim all along, going so far as to sue his former employer. Here's the problem with decking out a high-end Mercedes-Benz with a range of infotainment functionality: The average S-Class buyer doesn't use it and the "digital natives" – those born with a mobile phone in their hands – can't afford one. Daimler AG chief executive officer, Dieter Zetsche, told the Bild newspaper that if the German government doesn't offer subsidies for plug-in vehicles, then the nation will fail to hit its goal of having at least one million plug-ins on its streets by the end of 2020. During a recent interview with the Bild, Zetsche predicted that, without incentives, Germany will have 500,000 electric cars by then.
