Every year on Holocaust Remembrance Day, the people of Israel take two minutes to honor those who died in the Holocaust. When the sirens go off, everything stops, including traffic. This year, the two-minute ceremony was unfortunately marked with a pair of accidents due to the abrupt stop in traffic.

The Times of Israel reports that a woman in her 60s was run over as she was standing outside her car and another was struck as she stood by her vehicle on the highway. Both women were hurt badly enough to require medical attention and the older woman was listed in serious condition.

The incidents scarred an already solemn occasion, but after watching the post-jump video, we're surprised more people aren't injured. Scroll down to watch the unorganized chaos of freeway drivers pulling over at different times. Just as unorganized is the minute after the sirens stop, when everyone seems to want to leave as quickly as possible.
Continue reading Israelis stop on highway to commemorate Holocaust victims, two injured

Israelis stop on highway to commemorate Holocaust victims, two injured originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 16:01:00 EST. Back on October 17, IRL driver Graham Rahal tweeted about auctioning the helmet, gloves and shoes he wore in Las Vegas Indy 300 race that claimed the life of fellow driver Dan Wheldon in a 15-car wreck, with the proceeds going to a trust for Wheldon's family. Those three items from the driver have turned into a cascade of memorabilia from athletes, celebrities and companies alike.

There are currently 68 items up for auction, the most popular being NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson's tribute helmet; which he's currently wearing in the 2011 Sprint Cup Chase. The helmet's visor features a tribute to Wheldon. The current bid is $20,000, and the winner will actually have to wait until Jimmy's done with the helmet at the end of the Chase to collect it.

The auctions, running on eBay as we speak, will send 100% of their proceeds to the Dan Wheldon Family Trust Fund. You can get more information and make a donation on the Dan Wheldon Memorial site, or head straight for the auctions and place your bid.
Dan Wheldon Memorial auction underway, donation website now online originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 29 Oct 2011 10:01:00 EST.
Next year, an underground museum commemorating the attacks on 9/11 will open on the site that once held the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan. And it just got one of its first exhibitions.

A crushed 30-ton fire truck, draped in a white covering and American flags, was lowered by crane down into the site yesterday. The truck carried eleven firefighters to Ground Zero, all of whom died trying to save victims of the monumental terrorist attack. It's a fitting memorial to those who gave their lives to save others, and you can follow the jump to watch the brief clip from CBS News.
Continue reading Crushed NYC fire truck lowered into Ground Zero memorial

Crushed NYC fire truck lowered into Ground Zero memorial originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Jul 2011 13:32:00 EST. A federal appeals court has ruled that crosses set up alongside public roads in Utah to honor fallen state troopers are unconstitutional. The Utah Highway Patrol Association began erecting the privately-owned crosses over a decade ago, each with the trooper's name, badge number and the state seal. Despite not being owned by the state itself, the crosses reside on public land where drivers have no choice but to see them. That, combined with the state insignia was enough for the court to decide that the crosses had to go.

Texas-based American Atheists originally sued to have the nonprofit program discontinued and won, though the crosses were allowed to remain standing as the case went through the appeals process. Meanwhile, the UHPA argued that its message wasn't necessarily a religious one. The court sided with the American Atheists, saying that the size of the crosses and their location didn't gel with the government's need to remain neutral on religion.

We're saddened to announce the passing of Louis A. Perunko, Jr., known to racing fans as Lou Palmer, who passed away this past Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the age of 75.

He became famous for his regular interviews of each year's winner of the Indy 500 from Victory Lane at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and served as a reporter and anchor for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network reporter from 1953 to 1989, as well as being its chief in 1988 and 1989. Palmer was also an announcer on the CART radio network in the mid-90s before retiring some 10 years ago.

A memorial service will be held this coming Saturday, January 26 beginning at 1:30pm at the Camby Community Church in Indianapolis. Our condolences to the family of the dearly departed.
