For the majority of us, Memorial Day is synonymous with things like swimming pools, barbecues, road trips and, most of all, a day off from the nine-to-five grind. It's the unofficial start of summer.

But we mustn't forget about the real reason why we celebrate Memorial Day - to pay tribute to the men and women who have fallen while serving our country. What's more, Memorial Day reminds us to pause and tip our hats to the fine, dedicated folks who voluntarily serve to protect these United States each and every day.

We at Autoblog are taking the day off to enjoy some pre-summer fun, but never fear, the hopper is chocked full of automotive content to get you through until we're back in full swing tomorrow.

Finally, we couldn't resist the opportunity to include our gallery of the 2010 Tribute Chevrolet Camaro, so if you've never seen it before, scroll through the gallery below to get your fix. And from all of us at Autoblog, have a safe, happy and relaxing Memorial Day.
In observance of Memorial Day originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 May 2012 09:00:00 EST.
Memorial Day weekend is always a good opportunity to hit the road, and despite the sour state of the economy, AAA feels this weekend will see more travelers in their cars than last year.

Based on responses gleaned from a member survey, AAA estimates that 34.8 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this Memorial Day weekend, an increase of 500,000 travelers over 2011. The survey also predicts that 88 percent of this weekend's travelers will skip planes and trains in favor of cars. 53 percent of those surveyed say that elevated fuel prices won't affect their travel plans.

While the number of travelers will likely go up this weekend, the AAA survey finds that distances traveled should decrease significantly. Respondents say they will travel an average of 642 miles over the holiday weekend, or 150 fewer miles than last year. This is where fuel prices manifest themselves; while high gas prices may not keep people from driving this weekend, they will keep them from driving as far as they might have if costs were lower. You can read over the full AAA press release below.
Continue reading AAA expects more Memorial Day weekend drivers than last year

AAA expects more Memorial Day weekend drivers than last year originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 26 May 2012 14:02:00 EST. Memorial Day weekend is one of the premiere road trip holidays. According to the American Automobile Association, more than 30 million people will hit the road this weekend, averaging 642 miles each. That means, for many, crossing state lines. And nowadays, that's more confusing than ever. Speed limits may vary, but at least those are posted. Cell phone laws, however, are much more confusing.

For example, if you were driving from Michigan to Florida, you could legally text while driving in Ohio and Florida, where there are no laws banning it. But in between, it's illegal, as 38 states have laws against texting while driving.

There are 10 states where you couldn't hold my phone to my ear, as these states ban drivers from using hand held devices and require hands-free cell phone use.

Younger drivers, those with learners permits or under 18, may face stricter enforcement in some states, though it's unclear exactly how a cop can figure out someone's age at 70 miles per hour.

Of course, some cities have their own laws, as well, banning everything from texting while driving to dancing with girls. Make sure you know those laws as well. Or, just stay home, no one really wants to go to Bomont anyway. To see exactly what your state's laws are regarding cell phone use while driving, check out the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety listing or scroll through the maps in our gallery above.
America's cell phone laws, state by state originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 May 2012 18:40:00 EST. To some, Memorial Day is the first real kick-off to summer. Swimming pools open, the grill is fired up for burger and hot dog duty and we all take a day to kick back and enjoy the warmth. (Especially up here in the northern half of the country where the winter seemed to drag on forever.)

But the real purpose of Memorial Day is to pay tribute to the men and women of our armed forces who have died serving our country. So, while you may be enjoying a Monday off from the work-week grind, make sure you take a moment to honor the fallen, and salute those who voluntarily fight to keep our country free.

And if you didn't see it last year, be sure to scroll through our attached image gallery for the most American Chevrolet Camaro we've ever come across.
We may have one less excuse not to visit the in-laws this holiday season. According to the National Motorists Association and State Farm, driving on the holidays may actually be safer than jumping behind the wheel on a normal day. The insurance agency recently took a look at the number of claims it received on seven separate major U.S. holidays - the Fourth of July, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Easter, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas - and found that on average, those days had 2,350 fewer accidents than non-holidays.

The NMA says that for the majority of the year the average number of claims comes in around 7,435, while the holiday with the most claims - the Fourth of July - netted just 6,031. The figures are without a doubt interesting, but we would be just as interested to see the insurance agency's numbers on the days leading up to and trailing away from major holidays. The majority of people who head away from home typically hit the road just before the actual day of celebration, so we're guessing the number of claims for, say, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving might be higher than the national average.

It's easy to forget that while we spend day-in and day-out banging on QWERTYs and chasing our tails as automotive rumors get confirmed, then denied, then confirmed again, that there are men and women all over the world working to keep us safe and protect our families and our way of life. It's Memorial Day, so regardless of where you stand in the political spectrum, it's worth taking some time out of your day to say thanks to the service men and women in your life.

We're fortunate enough to live in a country where military service isn't mandatory, and we all owe a debt to the souls that that have volunteered to serve in our nation's armed forces. So take some time between your burgers and beers to pay your respects those that have fallen in the line of duty and honor those that are serving right now.

Unless you've had your head glued to a computer monitor for the past month (like we have), odds are you know it's Memorial Day weekend. Thanks to a modestly improving economy and bottom-basement deals on accommodations and flights, this year's summer kick off is slated to see quite a few more travelers than last year. Consumer Reports says that all in all, 32.1 million Americans will be leaving home for a little R&R over the three-day weekend. That number is up a full two million travelers compared to 2009. They won't all be on the road, though. That figure takes into account air travel, buses and cruises, as well as people hopping behind the wheel.

As for us, a few of the Autoblog staff will be brave enough to do battle with the hordes taking to America's roadways this weekend, but the rest of the crew probably won't be going any farther than the back deck. So what about you, loyal readers? Where ya headed? Share your weekend TripTik or other auto-related plans with us in Comments.
Before we usher in summer with the parades and cookouts and camaraderie, take a moment with us to remember the American servicemen and women for whom this day has been set aside. Their ultimate sacrifice is something we humbly honor as we salute the departed.

From all of us here at Autoblog, have a safe and Happy Memorial Day.

[Image: Wikimedia Commons | Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 license]
Happy Memorial Day from Autoblog originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 May 2009 10:30:00 EST. That means it's time to pack your families and all their associated gear in the <strike>family truckster</strike> family sedan and head out to see the relatives. We've already seen one set of choices for the best vehicle with which to hit the open road, and now Kelley Blue Book has decided to throw its hat in the ring as well. They cover all the bases, so regardless of the size of your clan, you'll be sure to find a recommendation that suits you. Some of their choices, like the Grand Caravan sitting at number five, seem pretty obvious and would likely make for a smooth trip. If smoothness isn't really your thing, perhaps the Bugatti Veyron, number two on KBB's list, would be a better choice. Too fuel thirsty for your pocketbook? Consider the Prius at number nine. Take a look at their full list here.

[Source: Kelley Blue Book]
Kelley Blue Book names Best New Road Trip Vehicles for 2008 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 May 2008 16:29:00 EST.
Sometimes, things just work out. The Memorial Day weekend weather forecast called for hot, sunny conditions -- perfect for the unofficial official kickoff to summer. Backyard parties would be devoid of no-shows and parade routes were assured to be standing-room-only. It was going to be a good weekend anyway, and Ford made it even better by entrusting yours truly with keys to an '07 Mustang GT for the duration. The big holiday weekend would be spent with a big, brassy muscle car sitting outside as driveway candy. And oh, what sweet, sweet candy... nostalgic styling covered in a Grabber Orange finish, a thundering V8, and a top that tucks behind the back seats, all to better appreciate the wicked roar coming from the stainless steel pipes in back. The whole thing is glorious Americana.

For Memorial Day weekend, one couldn't ask for anything better.
