You know, we can live without the Laguna and the Scenic. We really can. But when it comes down to the hot hatches, well... we kinda wish we could get out driving gloves on some Renault models on this side of the Atlantic. Certain models in specific, like the Megane 265 Trophy.

Renaultsport's top-of-the-line model holds the record for the quickest lap time of any front-driver around the Nürburgring. But while the hardcore R26.R that preceded it was a little rough-and-tumble, the new 265 Trophy is a properly sorted an everyday driver as it is a blistering performer. That's what the crew over at Fifth Gear found when they took the bruiser out for a spin. Follow the jump to watch their review.
Continue reading Fifth Gear drives Europe's hottest hot hatch, the Renaultsport Megane 265 Trophy

Fifth Gear drives Europe's hottest hot hatch, the Renaultsport Megane 265 Trophy originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 21 Nov 2011 19:32:00 EST.
Following decades of absence, French racing enthusiasts were suitably enthused by the return of the Gordini line. Whether the cosmetic packages that have heralded its comeback are up to snuff is another matter, but according to reports from across the ocean, a couple more are on their way.

We initially reported on the marque's comeback a year ago and brought you the unveiling of the new Gordini Twingo and Clio from the Geneva show this past March. Based on the existing RenaultSport models, the Gordini editions revive the blue-and-white livery of their forebears in an exclusive new package. Feel free to check out high-res image galleries of those cars after the break. Now, it appears that Renault is preparing to give the same treatment to the Megane and the Wind.

In the case of the Megane, a RenaultSport version is already available and widely acclaimed. Reports of a Wind Gordini, however, also suggest that an RS version of the diminutive roadster is on the way as well. So if the racing stripes weren't enough to pique your interest, RenaultSport's legendary tuning prowess in an open-air package should. Or at least give us another European sports model to pine for.

We've said it before but it warrants repeating: Renault makes some of the meanest hot hatches in the business. The (very) outgoing Megane RS has been a favorite among the track day crowd and really any European customer looking for a fast ride with sharp handling that can still serve on the daily grind. With the new Megane now out in the open, the big question on the minds of Renaultsport fans is what manner of fire-breathing demon will follow the established favorite they know and love? Clearly this isn't the answer, but if the production Megane III RS comes even remotely close to this concept car, we'll have yet another European machine to lust after.

The Renault Megane Trophy concept features a Nissan-sourced 3.5-liter V6 mounted amidship like in the old Renaultsport Clio V6, but producing a prodigious 360hp driving through a six-speed sequential gearbox, all wrapped in a competition-grade body with more wing than the Concorde and more louvers than a Parisian museum tour. Currently the car is just a concept, but could end up going into limited production for a spec racing series. Check it out in the gallery below and rest assured that it looks even more awesome in person.
