After the turmoil of last year, 2013 is getting off to a much better start for Mazda. The company has issued a release indicating that the forthcoming plant in Salamanca, Mexico has had its production capacity raised even though it isn't scheduled to go online until March 2014. The original plans called for a 140,000-unit capacity, 90,000 of that allotted for the Mazda2 and Mazda3, the remaining 50,000 for a small car Mazda would build for Toyota that would be based on the Mazda2. The new plans call for raising that by 90,000 units to a total of 230,000 units within two years, by the end of March 2016, and it looks like it will all go toward Mazda production to satisfy growing demand for Skyactiv vehciles. The Mexican plant's opening will be the return of Mazda manufacturing to North America, after Mazda6 production was moved back to Japan last year.

More good news for the company is that it projects 10 billion yen ($114 million) in net income for the financial year that will end in March. That would be a welcome turnaround from the 100-billion-yen loss in the previous financial year, part of a series of three annual losses in a four-year span.

Small seems to be the big new trend among automakers, and Mazda is trying to decide if it wants a piece of the potentially huge tiny-car pie.

The Mazda1 would slot beneath the company's B-segment Mazda2, says Mazda's GM of global sales and marketing, Yasuhiro Aoyama, and could might be ready for sale toward the end of this decade.

Aoyama was interviewed by GoAuto at this week's Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

Rumors indicate Mazda could go one of two ways with the little car. It could either shoot for low cost and compete with cars like the Tata Nano or Mazda could instead take on Volkswagen's Up at a higher price point. Aoyama admits the company will eventually have to address the city car market to meet new European emissions regulations.

A Nano competitor would give Mazda a low-cost presence in the ever-growing southeast Asia market.

Either plan would be easier to implement with a partner or government incentives, and Mazda has several options there. Mazda1 production costs could be lowered by building the car in a country with lower labor rates - Indonesia perhaps. Or Mazda could leverage its long-running relationship with Ford or its newly-formed partnership with FIAT to co-develop a sub-B-class competitor.

With sales of the Mazda2 not exactly huge, chances for a Mazda1 on sale here are, well, tiny.
Mazda1 under study originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Oct 2012 11:30:00 EST.
As with its platform-mate, the Ford Fiesta, the Mazda2 hasn't exactly made hay with the monthly sales numbers. Unlike it's Ford relative, however, Mazda isn't committed to sticking it out with the Mazda2 in the U.S. Ford has gone on record as saying it will remain committed to the Fiesta here, while a report in Automotive News claims the next-generation Mazda2, due around 2014, might skip our shores. The lack of momentum in the U.S. subcompact market is one of the causes, as is the Mazda2's price: with an asking price of $14,530, it is only $670 less expensive than the four-door Mazda3.

The Japanese company is focusing on its volume models and on getting its Skyactiv technologies fully integrated throughout the line. We've now got a full look at the Mazda6, and AN suggest the 2.2-liter twin-turbo diesel with 170 horsepower and 310 pound feet of torque could come to the U.S. after the sedan is launched here.

The next Mazda3 will be a showcase of lightweight and efficient Skyactiv tech, with 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter direct-injection engines on offer, a diesel and i-Eloop regenerative braking being considered. The lighter, more powerful MX-5 Miata is expected to be here in about two years time, and a rotary-powered sports car is still being worked on well behind the scenes.
Slow-selling Mazda2 may not be renewed for U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Aug 2012 09:14:00 EST.
We love crazy promotional videos with hair-raising stunts that seem to defy gravity, and this particular spot certainly checks all those boxes. Mazda has teamed up with The Demon Drome crew to determine if its Mazda2 can successfully whirl around a motor drome.

The motor drome is essentially a cylinder about 30 feet in diameter with wooden planks that are positioned at an impossible angle. Trained men and women have traditionally used motorcycles in these stunts, but the Japanese automaker evidently thought its tiny Mazda2 would be an ideal four-wheeled replacement.

We knew the Mazda2 was nimble, but this is pretty sweet. Hit the jump to watch the video for yourself... and try not to be alarmed by the demonic-sounding backwards talk.
Continue reading Watch a Mazda tackle the Wall of Death, live to tell the tale

Watch a Mazda tackle the Wall of Death, live to tell the tale originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST.
If the Mazda2 needs anything, it's a little more pep in its step. Mazda has moved to address that ail with the SEMA 2011 Turbo2 Concept. Boasting a direct-injection 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the small hatch is crammed with 263 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Those are the kinds of figures that are sure to slather a grin across your face, especially given that Mazda has managed to trim the concept's weight down to a skinny 2,300 pounds. Mazda also reminds us that this vehicle wears the company's largest forced-induction four-cylinder engine in its smallest vehicle platform. Zoom-Zoom indeed.

The Turbo2 Concept rocks a set of Brembo brakes to bring the whole party to a stop in a hurry, and the suspension has received its fair share of attention as well. HR coilovers, Corksport sway bars front and rear and Yokohama rubber all help keep the tiny hatch glued to the track. In fact, if this is all looking rather serious for a showcar, that's because it is - this car was built by the folks at Autobarn for use in One Lap of America with blessings from the Japanese automaker, though it has since been the recipient of a splashy new look.

So, will we see a version of it production? There's always a chance that Mazda will give the world a Mazdaspeed2 to chew on. In the meantime, if you can't wait and want this exact car, Autoblog reader Pete L. notes that it's for sale by the Autobarn folks, though it's a costly little number: $94,999.
Truth be told, we find most SEMA concepts to simply be gaudy aftermarket overkill. These two Mazda models, however - now these are something we'd like to sink our teeth into.

Let's start with the MX-5 Miata Spyder concept. The most obvious alteration here is the removal of the stock MX-5's folding soft top (or hard top) for the sake of a stretched canvas roof, similar to the rakish and flying buttressed Porsche Boxster Spyder. That, combined with larger wheels, a lowered stance, aero kit and a revised front fascia make this a Miata we'd definitely want to spend a lot of quality time with. We're already madly in love with the standard car, so making it lighter and improving the dynamics promises to be nothing short of motoring bliss.

The second concept is something we've been begging Mazda to create for quite some time, too. The Turbo2 is, according to Mazda, "one of our most powerful turbocharged engines in our lightest platform." That's a recipe for success if we've ever heard one. We can do without the ground effects kit and graphics package, but the thought of a turbocharged engine under the hood of a better-tuned Mazda2 (read: Mazdaspeed2) is a project we're more than willing to get behind.

We'll see both concepts live from Las Vegas next week. For now, feast your eyes on the hotness in our high-res image gallery.
Mazda previews hot MX-5 Miata Spyder and Turbo2 concepts for SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 11:30:00 EST. Episode #241 of the Autoblog Podcast is ready, and this week Chris, Dan and Zach are joined by Autoblog's photo maven, Drew Phillips. Our discussion starts with the new CAFE standards and then moves to Audi future products as discussed by Johan DeNysschen before finishing up with the rumor of Suzuki considering a small pickup. Your questions and comments power the last third of the podcast, and for those of you who hung with us live on our UStream channel, thanks for taking the time.
You'd expect a car labeled Black Edition to actually be, you know...black. Whether it's a Porsche, a Hummer or a Unimog. But then again Mercedes-AMG's top line of performance models are called the Black Series, and you can get those in any color you want. So maybe it's a page out of that playbook that Mazda has taken with its latest special edition.

Mazda's latest specials are available exclusively in the UK, and celebrate the success of the MX-5 GT race car. It's available on both the MX-5 Miata hardtop roadster and the Mazda2 five-door hatch, and while either can be ordered in green, red or white, it's the black trim on everything from the roof to the wheels that sets them apart and gives them their name.

Only 500 examples of the MX-5 Sport Black shown above will be offered, while the Mazda2 Black will give birth to 618 offspring, each packing all the bells and whistles to go along with the darkened trim. Details in the press release after the jump, with images in the high-res gallery.
Continue reading Mazda UK's Black edition MX-5 and Mazda2 can be had in any color... as long as it's not black?

Mazda UK's Black edition MX-5 and Mazda2 can be had in any color... as long as it's not black? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 18:01:00 EST.
Mazda has taken the knife to the company's Demio compact, known as the Mazda2 in this neck of the woods. Along with a minor facelift, the five-door now rocks the first production application of the automaker's direct-injection, 1.3-liter SkyActiv gasoline engine. With an astronomical compression ratio of 14.0:1 and an intelligent start/stop system that requires less fuel to re-initiate the combustion cycle, the small-displacement four-cylinder promises to be one of the most efficient mills to ever wear a Mazda badge. The company says that the Demio returned the equivalent of 58.8 mpg on the JC08 evaluation cycle.

The engine uses a range of clever tech to help with efficiency, including a cooled EGR system that helps reduce knock, multi-hole fuel injectors that help cool the combustion chamber, a uniquely designed piston, dual sequential valve timing and lighter engine internals for reduced friction losses.
Mazda hasn't released any power figures for the Demio at this point, and it's unclear whether the thrifty little 1.3-liter four-cylinder will show up in U.S.-spec Mazda2 models anytime soon. We've got our fingers crossed. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Facelifted Mazda2 with SkyActiv 1.3L revealed in Japan

Facelifted Mazda2 with SkyActiv 1.3L revealed in Japan originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 10:29:00 EST. Mazda is preparing a fleet of electric vehicles that will be available for lease in Japan. Based on the Demio/Mazda2, these EVs will utilize the automaker's new SKYACTIV powertrain technology. Mazda is shooting for a 200-kilometer driving range (about 124 miles) and plans to begin the leasing program in the spring of 2012.

The target audience for the vehicle will be local government groups and fleet customers. Mazda's ultimate goal of the program is to refine its knowledge of electric vehicles by collecting data on EV requirements and powertrain technology. For the full details, follow the jump for the automaker's brief press release.
Bigger used to mean better, but in the modern era, that old chestnut no longer applies. Mobile phones aren't the size of a brick, we can fit 2,000 songs in our pocket and this review was written on a computer that fits neatly on an airplane's tray table. Sometimes smaller is better, and here's a vehicle that proves it.

While the 2011 Mazda2 might not be out to redefine the subcompact segment, it does offer something largely lacking from the rest of the pack: fun. But are Mazda's Zoom-Zoom driving dynamics enough to overlook its shortcomings in power, packaging and amenities? Find out after the jump.

Racing is a rich man's sport, no question about it. Sure, there are some ways to get into a bit of wheel-to-wheel that cost less than others, such as the 24 Hours of LeMons, but even that is more expensive than you might think. But regardless of the cost, some people still need to scratch that racing itch. One way to keep costs down is to get into spec racing - everyone uses the same type of car and they are typically kept showroom stock minus the addition of safety features such as a roll cage, harness and racing bucket. Mazda and Honda understand this and the two automakers have decided to roll out a B-Spec racing series that utilizes the Mazda2 and Honda Fit.

If the thought of tossing either of these two cars around a track doesn't sound fun, then you clearly have never driven either one. Though they are both down on power, they offer high levels of tossable excitement. Turn them into race-ready hoon machines and the volume knob twists to 11.

A spec series presents an even playing field for the competitors because the engines and chassis remain stock for all cars. Driving skill is what will win in an event like this, and every ounce of that behind-the-wheel prowess will be tested in these low-powered hatchbacks. Hop the jump to read the full press release.

Fuel efficiency is rapidly becoming one of the most influential determining factors when new car shoppers go looking for their next vehicle. And, as our friends at Consumer Reports correctly point out, earning top fuel efficiency marks generally means shopping in one of three categories: diesels, hybrids or subcompacts.

As such, the consumer-oriented magazine has pitted four fuel-sippers against each other in their upcoming January, 2011 issue: the 2011 Ford Fiesta, Honda CR-Z, Mazda2 and Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI. Of these four models, the Jetta is the only one that's currently Recommended - the Fiesta and Mazda2 are too new to have adequate reliability data and, though expected to be reliable, the last-place CR-Z scored too low in CR's own road testing to recommend.

CR tested two versions each of the Mazda and Ford subcompacts, one with a manual transmission and the other with an automatic. The Fiesta was ranked slightly higher than the Mazda2 overall, though the magazine seems to like both vehicles. Of the Honda, CR writes that "the ride is choppy, noise levels are high, and on-limit handling can be tricky." Couple those unfavorable traits with lower-than-expected fuel mileage of 35 mpg and limited utility, and it's understandable why CR wasn't particularly impressed with the CR-Z.

Though somewhat pricey at $27,204, the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI performed admirably, delivering 36 mpg overall and a superb 49 mpg on the highway in the hands of CR's testers. As an aside, CR also took a look at the Fuel Doctor FD-47 fuel-saving device, and rather predictably, found that it basically did nothing at all. Check out the full press release after the break, check out CR's thoughts about the CR-Z, or just wait until the January 2011 issue hits the newsstands for the complete results.

Hipster sneaker Mazda2 - Click above for high-res image gallery

We got a good look at the two funked-up Mazda2s brought to SEMA by the Zoom-Zoom gang, and at least one of them we sorely need to see on the streets. After happening upon a color and materials designer who worked on this and the Mazda Miata Super20, we asked for the details on the whats and the whys. We were told that the slight gray wundercar with the superfine metallic was created to showcase a hipper, in-house side of the 2, à la a Puma sneaker. That means a rich base coat cut by bold graphics and harmonized details that don't detract from the big picture.

For us, it works. And in fact, it works so well that it's just the kind of thing we think Mazda needs to do to introduce some more entry-level Zoom-Zoom to proceedings. Scion has lost its way, but the Focus ST is coming and the Fiesta is selling loaded up with options, so there's no reason the Mazda2 needs to sit in the bargain fuel economy corner. The wheel and tire combo might need a bit more attention, but it'd be a shame for this car to remain a unicorn.

On the other side of the stand was its "Evil Track" twin racing version, with a set of slicks and a roll cage. We certainly wouldn't mind seeing that one, either... but Mazda, come on - the Sneaker2 is the way to go. Bring it. Until that happens, check out this pair of 2s in the galleries of high-res photos below.

Mazda showcases track-ready sports cars at SEMA - Click above for high-res image gallery

Mazda builds plenty of sporty cars that incorporate a fun-to-drive feeling, but calling something a sports car does not automatically equate to a vehicle that is ready for the track. For the 2010 SEMA show, Mazda tweaked a handful of cars to show us just how quickly fun can turn into ferocious.

Looking into its stable, Mazda reached in and pulled out a few Mazda2s, a couple of MX-5s, a pair of Mazda3s and an RX-8, then turned them over to its North American design director, Derek Jenkins.

"The versatility of Mazda vehicles is extraordinary. With just minor modifications to a stock Mazda, it can be ready for the track or a car show. Our SEMA cars demonstrate this ability; taking a vehicle from the dealership and making it a truly unique piece."

The subcompact Mazda2 was given two personalities for the show: a track-ready, lightweight racer and a sporty street car. The track version is called the Mazda2 Evil Track while the other is simply called the Mazda2 Street. Both are great examples of how relatively underpowered cars can still be a total hoot to drive.

Mazda's iconic roadster also arrives in two souped up versions. The MX-5 Super20 celebrates the 20th anniversary of the droptop sports car. Under the hood lies a supercharged Cosworth engine and the paint scheme is black on gray, both of which give this MX-5 a substantially meaner aura. The other Miata at SEMA is the MX-5 Cup Car, which is a full-on spec racer outfitted with a plethora of racing equipment.

Turning its attention to a four-door, Mazda has brought a turbocharged Mazda3 and the Mazda3 Red Line Time Attack car. Both feature a similar paint scheme, but the turbo Mazda3 is a modified street car while the Red Line Time Attack vehicle runs in the Super Modified class of its series and is capable of hitting 180 miles per hour on a long straight. That's awfully quick for a C-segment vehicle.

Mazda has also brought an RX-8 along to serve as a well-deserved pat on the back. The Grand-Am GT Mazda RX-8 just completed its 2010 season and utterly dominated the competition. Of the 12 races run, the RX-8 won six of them. More information on each vehicle is available in the full press-release waiting after the jump.

Mazda's SkyActiv technologies - Click above for high-res image gallery

Perhaps Mazda was given a chance to play with Mercedes-Benz's nomenclature machine, but the Japanese firm has adjusted the name of its Sky technologies to SkyActiv. These represent the updated components that will appear in Mazda's next generation of cars, and represent six particular advances, from engines to bodyshells.

The engines formerly known as Sky-D (diesel) and Sky-G (gas) will be the first to contribute to what Mazda calls "sustainable ZoomZoom." The clean diesel lump has a compression ratio of 14.0:1, touted as the lowest in the world, while the DI gasoline engine has the same ratio, touted as the highest in the world and as having "no abnormal knocking." The increased engine efficiency is said to result in a 15 percent fuel economy improvement. The Mazda Demio (Mazda2) will be the first to get the SkyActive-G, and the company claims it will get 30 km/l, which equals 70 miles per gallon by our math (read more about this car here).

The rest of the line-up includes SkyActiv-Drive, an automatic transmission with a wider lock-up range, SkyActive-MT, a compact, manual transmission with less weight and a "short stroke and light shift feel," SkyActiv-Body, a body-in-white that's eight percent lighter yet 30 percent more rigid, and SkyActiv-Chassis, a 14 percent lighter chassis with a revised suspension. Follow the jump for the full info, and high-res shots of your SkyActiv fantasies are in the gallery below.

We're big fans of the 2011 Mazda2, but of all the good things this little hatch has going for it, fuel economy isn't really one of them. Manual transmission models offer 29/35 miles per gallon city/highway, and while that isn't terrible by any means, it's sub-par when you consider the new standard for B- and C-segment cars: 40 mpg.

With the next-generation 2, Mazda plans to completely overhaul the powertrain, using its new SKYACTIV engine and transmission technology. The result is a Mazda2 that the automaker says will achieve 70 mpg without the help of an electric motor, making it the most fuel-efficient gas-powered car on the road.

The next Mazda2 will launch in Japan sometime in the first half of 2011 and will quickly make its way to other markets over the next few years. The 2 may be an all-new entry to the United States, but it's merely a mid-cycle refresh of the car that's been on sale overseas for years. We're certainly eager to see what the Japanese automaker has up its sleeve, and while 70 mpg is indeed a lofty goal, it isn't too far fetched these days.

In case you missed it, we just published our First Drive of the brand-new Mazda2 today. If your attention spans is anything like ours, allow us to remind you that we've also driven the Ford Fiesta once or twice. Since both cars are built atop the same platform and will be competing for your hard-earned bucks in short order, the natural question is: Which one would you choose?

If you don't have time to read both of our drives, here's a quick glance at some of the more salient details:

2011 Ford Fiesta

2011 Mazda2

Base Price

$13,995 (four-door sedan), $15,795 (hatchback)

$13,980 (hatchback)

Engine

120 horsepower, 112 pound-feet of torque

100 horsepower, 98 pound-feet of torque

Transmission

Five-speed manual, Six-speed dual-clutch auto

Five-speed manual, Four-speed auto

Base Weight

2,537 pounds

2,309 pounds

Efficiency

29/40 (auto), 28/37 (manual)

27/33 (auto), 29/35 (manual)

Naturally, there's more to the equation than the tale of the tape. For instance, if you're in the market for an automatic transmission, the six-speed dual-clutch gearbox in the Fiesta seems to be a much more attractive option than the old-school four-speed automatic in the Mazda. Also, the Fiesta can store more cargo and has more comfortable seats.

It would seem that the scales are tipping in the Blue Oval's favor. Consider too that the Fiesta is available as both a sedan and a hatchback while the Mazda2 is a hatchback only. Add in an available navigation system, leather interior, SYNC infotainment system and heated seats - none of which are available on the Mazda - and we've got a slam-dunk win for the Ford. Right?

Perhaps not. Our man Steven Ewing, the only member of the team to have driven both U.S.-spec models, tells us that the Mazda2 is notably more fun to drive than the Fiesta. Plus, he claims the 2 looks better in its specific shade of green, if that kind of thing is important to you. So, is the promise of an added dose of driving enjoyment worth the significant loss in comfort, convenience and economy? That's up to you to decide.

Mazda says there's a little bit of Miata in everything it does. While it's easy to chalk that up as marketing frippery, when the automaker launched the Little Roadster That Could back in 1989, it proved that great things can come from a machine developed to be simple, reliable and driver-focused. Even now, none of Mazda's wares offer class-leading fuel economy or practicality, but they've proven to be some of the best drivers in their segments. And as enthusiasts, it's easy to exchange a bit of functionality for a larger helping of fun.

Now, Mazda hopes to achieve this same sort of positioning within the B-car segment - a class that's grown substantially in America and is projected to double in size within the next few years. The 2011 Mazda2 comes to town right on the heels of its sister car, the Ford Fiesta, but as we found out after a lengthy drive through the city of Montréal and the countryside of Canada's Québec province, it's a wholly different machine. And while the Fiesta is sure to provide some serious competition for the 2, there are plenty of other well-to-do B cars in the U.S. that are ready to be sized up against the minuscule Mazda.

If you only look at the stats, you wouldn't think Mazda has positioned the 2 to be anything overly special. Not only is it the least powerful car in its segment, but it doesn't offer some of the clever technology or unique packaging to make it stand out from its kin. But Mazda is immensely proud of the new 2, and though we looked on with skeptical faces, the people in charge simply told us that the little hatch's story is best told on the road. So let's get to it.
You only have two more months to wait for the Mazda2 to appear in your local showroom, but you can start practicing your mixing and matching right now with the newly freed dealer order guide. The 2011 Mazda2 starts at $13,980 plus a $750 destination charge and goes all the way up to $16,980, including destination charges for the top-flight automatic Touring model. That last figure is actually $945 more than the larger Mazda3, so if you might want to crunch some numbers if you're pondering going high-end, but even if you do, you're still looking pretty sweet against competitors like the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent.

On top of the a 100-horsepower, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that comes with the car, you can play around with options such as fog lights, portable Garmin navigation, a Motorola hands-free device and a kayak carrier. Check out the guide in our gallery below and let the configuration games begin.
