Most vehicle recalls that take place these days are a result of some problem that happens during the manufacturing process by the automaker, but as we see here, parts suppliers can also factor in to problematic safety issues. Automotive News is reporting that a total of 3.4 million vehicles produced by Japanese automakers between 2000 and 2004 are being recalled globally due to faulty airbags produced by an outside supplier, Takata Corp.

According to the report, vehicles from Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda are being recalled because of passenger front airbags that do not inflate properly. Globally, Toyota is said to be recalling around 1.73 million cars including 510,000 in the US composed of Toyota Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia and Tundra as well as the Lexus SC430 for the 2001 through 2003 model years; this is the second time this year the 2003 Corolla and Matrix have been recalled for an airbag problem. Honda is recalling 1.14 million models, Nissan another 480,000 and Mazda 45,463. The article says that Takata supplied faulty airbags to non-Japanese automakers, but it did not specify which ones.

Honda and Toyota have released information on their own websites about the recall, while Nissan and Mazda have not yet commented.
Mazda is recalling has issued a recall of the 2001- and 2002-model-year Mazda Tribute crossover for a possible brake fluid leak. It's been found that fluid leaking from the reservoir cap on the master cylinder might come into contact with the ABS wiring harness connector, leading to potential corrosion and/or fire.

We've been waiting on this action for the better part of a month, as its mechanical twin, the Ford Escape, was the subject of a similar NHTSA recall announced on January 11. The Blue Oval recall covered some 244,000 units for the same problem.

There are 52,390 Tributes affected in total, and Mazda is taking the unusual step of advising that if you have one, you should park it outside until a dealer has made the necessary repairs. You can find a release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on the matter after the jump.
Continue reading Mazda recalls over 52,000 Tribute crossovers, warns owners to park outside

Mazda recalls over 52,000 Tribute crossovers, warns owners to park outside originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 28 Jan 2012 18:01:00 EST. According to Reuters, Mazda is preparing to announce a recall that could affect any Mazda3 built between January 2008 and July 2010. The recall has been issued because of an electronic glitch keeps the windshield wipers from working properly. So far no accidents have been reported that relate to this defect.

Approximately 494,500 cars fall under the umbrella of this recall. In North America, the total number of vehicles potentially affected is 157,700. If you own a Mazda3 built within this time period, perhaps it's time for you to stock up on Rain-X until you can bring the car into your local dealer to have the issue repaired...
Nearly 500,000 Mazda3s recalled over windshield wiper defect originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Jun 2011 18:01:00 EST. People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is offering a unique - if unlikely - solution to 2009-2010 Mazda6 owners who have felt the bite of the company's recall to chase away gas-loving spiders. They want you to donate your ride to them. The animal-rights group is soliciting donations from any of the 52,000 affected Mazda customers who would rather see the spiders saved than murdered at the hands of mechanics.

Once they've chased the itsy-bitsy spiders from the car's evap pipe, PETA says they'll use the donated Mazda sedans to champion their cause. PETA says that this won't be the first time they've received cars from animal loving donors: a PETA member who was terrified of mice once donated a brand-new Jeep to the organization after she found a mouse living in it. The mouse was saved, just as the spiders will be.
Mazda is reportedly looking to issue a recall of the popular Mazda3 compact in its European and Asian markets. According to Automotive News, the carmaker has filed a report with the Japanese transport ministry stating that driving on rough roads for an extended period of time can cause the car's oil hose to rub against the radiator's protective panel. This can cause oil to leak if the hose is worn down. Worst case scenario, Mazda says, is that the car will simply be unable to start.

This recall will only affect 89,822 Axela models (the Mazda3's name in Asian markets) in Japan and China, and an additional 191,503 units sold throughout Europe. The United States is off the hook this time, though, since the recall only covers vehicles fitted with an engine that's unavailable in the U.S. Mazda is currently deciding how to repair this problem in all markets and plans to issue the official recall in the near future.
