<br />
Often imitated, never duplicated. We're talking about the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/maybach">Maybach</a> Exelero, the high-speed test bed commissioned from Daimler by Fulda tires. Unfortunately, only one was ever made, and it was subsequently sold for nearly $8 million, reportedly to an African diamond tycoon named <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andr%C3%A9_A._Jackson">Andr&eacute; A. Jackson</a>.<br />
<br />
Since then, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/exelero/">Exelero</a> has prompted a few wannabes in various forms, from the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/20/brabus-builds-its-own-exelero-hits-205-mph-at-nardo/">Brabus-tuned Maybach 57 Nardo top speed test vehicle</a> to the "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/23/one-off-million-dollar-black-ruby-rolls-royce-coupe-up-for-sal/">Black Ruby</a>" and the latest <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/05/20/xenatech-turning-maybach-57s-into-a-limited-production-luxury-co/">Xenatech coupe</a>. Now a company in Switzerland is apparently offering replicas of the original Exelero based on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/dodge/viper+srt10">Dodge Viper</a>.<br />
<br />
Little in the way of details is available at this point, save for the Viper's 8.3-liter V10 and 23-inch wheels. The manufacturer is offering the replicas - made to order to the buyer's specifications - on luxury classified site JamesList for &euro;550,000 (about $670k). That may seem like a lot, but it's still a far cry from the eight million asked for the original.<br />

Although we doubt anybody over at Mercedes would admit it, this car appears to be the inspiration for the Maybach Exelero show car from a couple of years ago. OK, probably not, but both are huge black coupes that seem to have been fashioned for comfortably touring the underworld. The biggest difference is that this Rolls is 80 years older than the Maybach. Officially it is a 1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Aerodynamic Coupe with coachwork by Jonckheere, but most people call it the "Round Door" Rolls. Originally delivered to its owner wearing a more humble Hooper Cabriolet body in 1925, it was sold to the Raja of Nanpara soon after. It changed hands again but stayed in England until 1934, when another owner sent it to Belgium to be re-bodied by Carrossier Jonckheere. <br /><br />[Source: Car Collector]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1925-rolls-royce-phantom-i-aerodynamic-coupe">1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Aerodynamic Coupe</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1925-rolls-royce-phantom-i-aerodynamic-coupe/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/06/petersenrolls---1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1925-rolls-royce-phantom-i-aerodynamic-coupe/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/06/petersenrolls---2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1925-rolls-royce-phantom-i-aerodynamic-coupe/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/06/petersenrolls---3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1925-rolls-royce-phantom-i-aerodynamic-coupe/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/06/petersenrolls---4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1925-rolls-royce-phantom-i-aerodynamic-coupe/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/06/petersenrolls---5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/06/04/most-ominous-rolls-ever-created-makes-l-a-appearance/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Most ominous Rolls ever created makes L.A. appearance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/06/04/most-ominous-rolls-ever-created-makes-l-a-appearance/">Most ominous Rolls ever created makes L.A. appearance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 04 Jun 2007 18:30:00 EST. These are low numbers even for an ultra-exclusive personal limo manufacturer. We can personally attest to the Maybach sedan being a very fine road car that is sumptuous and coddling, while simultaneously being capable of amazing alacrity when given the spur. Sure, it couldn't quite keep up with its corporate cousin CLK DTM, but it will more than hold its own against a Silver Spur or Phantom. But even a good car can get a bit stale, and although the line was expanded with the "S" models, the 57 and 62 won't personally guarantee the marque's future. As much as we'd love to see the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/12/05/video-jay-z-taps-maybach-exelero-for-new-video/">Exelero</a> reach production (so would <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/12/05/la-auto-show-ab-stalked-by-the-governator/">The Governator</a>), it's far more likely we'll be seeing a cabrio/landoulet version of the current sedan, and possibly an SUV, as well.<br /><br /><em>CAR Magazine</em>, in fact, is reporting that the 57 and 62 sedans will go topless, with a power cloth top dropping to expose that huge passenger compartment. They also predict that a version of the corporate Mercedes-Benz GL will get a Maybachover to create the ultimate SUV. Picture a new nose and tail and those Concorde-like seats inside. They guess that these models could quintuple Maybach output by adding 25-50 ragtops and up to 1,500 Sport Utes. We see the cabrio as a must-have in light of the debut of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/29/first-us-bound-rolls-royce-phantom-drophead-coupe-sells-for-2-m/">Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe</a>, even if Mercedes brings the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/12/20/mercedes-benz-reveals-ocean-drive-concept-for-detroit/">Ocean Drive</a> to fruition. The SUV seems like less of a necessity, but with a possible <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/07/26/spy-shots-bentley-cross-continental-suv/">Bentley SUV</a> in the future, this would make sense, too.<br /><br />[Source: CAR Magazine<a href="http://news.windingroad.com/body-stylesmarket-segment/convertibles/maybach-to-spawn-convertible-suv/" />]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/20/maybach-expansion-may-include-convertible-suv/">Maybach expansion may include convertible, SUV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 17:33:00 EST. Not so much for his awesome music, but for the cars he uses in his vids. Just a few weeks ago we showed you the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/18/video-cruisin-monte-carlo-with-jay-z-dale-jr-and-danica/">Monte Carlo-set video</a> for "Show Me What You Got" with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Danica Patrick racing around in a Ferrari F430 Spider and Pagani Zonda Roadster respectively, and now he brings forth one of our favorite concept cars of recent years, the Maybach Exelero. It is featured in his new video for "Lost Ones." Such a badass car. <br /><br />We've been very fortunate to see this car close up on several occasions starting with Pebble Beach in August and continuing up to last week, when The Governator stopped to admire it at the LA Auto Show. As enticing as it looks on the show floor, it looks even better rolling under street lights, if we do say so ourselves. Makes us think a limited run could sell pretty quickly if Maybach decided to greenlight it.<br /><br />Thanks Iculookin2 for the tip!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/12/05/video-jay-z-taps-maybach-exelero-for-new-video/">VIDEO: Jay-Z taps Maybach Exelero for new video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 05 Dec 2006 18:03:00 EST.
