Our sister site, AOL Autos, just dug up one of the largest rebates we've ever seen on a new car. If, for some reason, you must have a Maybach before the brand ceases production altogether, you may in line to snag a tidy $100,000 rebate. Daimler previously let slip that the company will kill the ultra-luxury brand in 2013 and replace it with a new high-end Mercedes-Benz S600 Pullman. Given that Maybach models never exactly jumped off of the showroom floor, we're guessing the German automaker needs all the help it can get moving the Type 57 and Type 62.

Even with $100,000 off the sticker price, you'll still need a suitcase full of C notes to take one of these machines home. The entry-level Type 57 commands a $376,300 MSRP while the Type 62 starts at $427,700. Even at those prices, reports suggest the the company lost a staggering $500,000 on each and every model it sold. It's a wonder the marque stayed around as long as it did.

Maybach lost upwards of $500k on each vehicle sold

Daimler is shuttering Maybach in 2013 after seven years of production. In that time, the company's ultra-ultra-luxury arm managed to sell just 3,000 units, and CAR reports Daimler lost somewhere around $500,000 on each and every one of them.

Even with a ludicrous price tag of over $370,000 for an "entry" Maybach 57, the brand couldn't quite recoup the dizzying $1.33 billion Daimler poured into it since its (re)inception. Rumors ignited over a possible tie up with Aston Martin that would have resulted in a range of new and attractive models, but Daimler has instead decided to snuff out Maybach altogether.

We can hardly blame them.

Mercedes-Benz will pick up the ultra-luxury slack with a new range of sedans based on the S-Class. Those bruisers will likely bow in 2013 just as Maybach turns out the lights for good.

Mercedes-Benz killing Maybach in 2013, replacing with S600 Pullman

According to an unnamed Mercedes-Benz source speaking with AutoWeek, the German automaker is killing off its Maybach line in 2013.

The unsurprising news comes after the brand was resurrected in 2002, but failed to meet sales expectations with its two core models, the Maybach 57 and 62. Further solidifying its fate, a deal with Aston Martin to aid in the development of future Maybachs fell through earlier this year.

According to the AutoWeek insider, the plan is to continue to sell both Maybach models through the end of 2013, after which the fifth-generation S-Class will go on sale. When that happens, three new variants of the S-Class will be available, including an all-new, range-topping S600 that brings back the Pullman moniker and may be better suited to competing with the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

Maybach Cruiserio Coupe bites the dust as Xenatec declares bankruptcy

You just can't catch a break in this world if your name is Maybach. The superlux Daimler division has had trouble selling enough vehicles to seriously challenge the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce - divisions of arch-rivals Volkswagen and BMW, respectively. It can't seem to broker a viable deal with Aston Martin to produce a new range. Even that one-off Exelero wasn't paid for in full after being purchased by a certain hip-hop artist. Now the last ambitious project by the double-M marque appears to have floundered, too.

As you may recall, a German coachbuilder called Xenatec recently launched an initiative, with Maybach's blessing, to produce a series of hyper-exclusive million-dollar Maybach coupes. The idea stemmed from Xenatec's existing business producing armored luxury cars for those with the means. Unfortunately, the program doesn't seem to have attracted enough buyers to make it viable, and the associated costs have reportedly now bankrupted the company.

All-in-all, eight or so Maybach Cruiserio Coupes are reported to have been sold, with another three in various states of build seeking buyers. We're not sure who would complete them even if they were sold, however, as the bulk of Xenatec's workforce has apparently either quit or been laid off.

Perhaps you've heard: two young Britons are getting hitched on Friday, April 29th, 2011. To mark the occasion, the groom, one William Arthur Philip Louis Mountbatten-Windsor, better known as Prince William of Wales, and his bride-to-be, Kate Middleton, have been "honored" by exotic car customizer, Project Kahn.

The Project Kahn Wedding Commemorative Maybach 57 (what, no Bentleys or Rolls-Royces lying around the shop, guys?) is a ~~blatant PR grab~~ "tribute" to the new royal couple that will ~~have nothing at all to do with the royal wedding itself~~ reside at Project Kahn's Bradford headquarters. The touched-up super Benz features Kahn-designed 22-inch wheels, smoked glass, an upgraded interior and darkened taillamps. It also wears the license plate, "4 HRH", which means For His Royal Highness.

Xenatech turning Maybach 57S into a limited-production luxury coupe

Daimler's ultra-premium brand Maybach may be able to compete with the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce when it comes to sedans. But with the menacing Exelero concept remaining exactly that, the Double-M marque has nothing to rival the Bentley Brooklands and Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe. Enter Xenatech with the solution you see here.

The German engineering firm is committing to produce a short run of coupes based on the Maybach 57S. The two-door retains the sedan's 5.7-meter length, but the track has been widened and the roof chopped down, moving the B and C pillars aft to accommodate longer doors. Power comes from the same 612-horsepower, 6-liter twin-turbo V12 as the sedan, estimated to propel the coupe to 62 mph in five seconds flat.

Word has it Xenatech has Daimler's blessing on the endeavor, and may even have received cooperation on the adaptation. Only 100 examples are slated for production - each with a price tag of €650,000 ($800k) - from the firm's factory in Weinsberg, near Maybach's own facility in Sindelfingen. Given how slowly 'ordinary' four-door Maybachs have been to move beyond the factory gates, that volume target seems quite optimistic, but the Xenatech renderings shown here at least hold promise. Maybach unveils updated range for 2011 [w/video]

Reports of Maybach's demise may have been slightly exaggerated - for the time being, anyway. The ultra-premium Daimler brand has released updated versions of its range, which is essentially the same vehicle with different configurations.

For MY2011, the Maybach 57, 57S, 62 and 62S feature a handful of cosmetic, mechanical and interior equipment upgrades. The exterior benefits from a new grille (now different between the standard and S models), hood, tail lights and door mirrors, which - in addition to refreshing the limo's looks - also reduces wind noise for a quieter ride. Underneath the new hood, meanwhile, Daimler has optimized the V12 engine for marginally reduced emissions and fuel consumption, and while the standard engine stays pegged at 542 horsepower, the S version gets an 18-horse boost to 630.

Inside there's a partition to separate passengers from chauffeur, and the reclining seats previously available only on the longer 62 model can now be fitted on the passenger side in the rear of the 57 as well. The 62 can be fitted with an electro-chromatic tinting glass roof panel, and customers can also specify a 19-inch rear screen instead of the individual 9.5-inch monitors, on which they can view camera feeds from around the vehicle. The perfume atomizer from the Zeppelin model can also be ordered on the rest of the range now as well, and there's available wireless internet and seat piping either braided or embedded with Swarovski crystals.

The revised Maybach range debuts this Friday at the Beijing Motor Show, where Bentley is also presenting a pair of special editions, Volkswagen its new Phaeton and Audi the long-wheelbase A8 L. If we didn't know better, we'd think the Chinese had a thing for limos. Make the jump for a promo video.

Rumormill: BYD interested in buying Maybach from Mercedes?!

According to one of China's largest auto-related websites, BYD is interested is acquiring the Maybach brand from Mercedes-Benz within the next few years. The site, auto.sina.com is reporting that an undisclosed official from BYD confirmed the companies interest in Maybach. The source stated that BYD would "launch the acquisition" when Mercedes finalizes its decision to end the Maybach nameplate.

Mercedes and BYD have already joined together in an effort to market electric vehicles in China, so the companies have a working relationship, but whether or not this relationship translates into the acquisition of Maybach is unknown. It seems unlikely that Mercedes would hand over the Maybach nameplate to another company, but it just might happen. BYD's expansion efforts have been strong and luxury cars such as the Zeppelin, pictured above, tend to sell well in foreign markets so it could be a fit for BYD. For now, we will just have to wait it out and see what develops.

Report: Maybach to get facelift in Beijing before brand gets the axe

If a recent report out of the UK is to be believed, Maybach is set to get the axe in the very near future. However, as a last hurrah, all three models from the ultra-luxury division of Mercedes-Benz (57, 62 and Landaulet) will receive facelifts this year. The last round of top-zoot Maybachs will debut in late April at the Beijing Motor Show. Expect the changes to the lineup to be very minor - new grilles and LED lights should be about the only differences from the sedans currently on sale.

So, why kill off Maybach? Ever since the brand was resurrected in 2002, it has suffered from very slow sales. Not surprising, considering the high price tags, comparatively low content levels and the hard financial times the world has fallen on in recent years. Furthermore, parent company Mercedes-Benz has big plans to expand the S-Class range, which includes adding more upmarket versions which should fill the void of Maybach's current offerings. Look for the new S-Class to arrive in 2014, along with a fully updated version of the R-Class people-mover, as well.

Project Kahn tries to help the Maybach 57

If you want, say, a custom Chevrolet Corvette or Mercedes-Benz, there's no shortage of aftermarket tuners who'd be glad to help. If your taste (and budget) demand something a little more opulent, however, then there are only a handful of companies at your service. And one of them is Project Kahn.

After taking on the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce, the British tuner has released a catalog of modifications for the Maybach 57. Good thing, too, because the top-shelf Benz could use some help. The package includes special 22-inch wheels designed to accommodate the factory wheel hubs (lest a passer-by mistake this for an S-Class), smoked taillights, tinted privacy glass and an interior that can be fully trimmed to order (not that the standard Maybach couldn't have been in the first place). And with the sky the limit on customization, we're going to go out on a limb here and wager that the price is, too. Images in the gallery below.

Highest and lowest depreciating cars of 2009 in the UK

Car price guide Parker's has produced its latest depreciation lists for cars in the UK. It's probably of most use if you're shopping at the lower-priced end of the car spectrum, since a straight-up comparison would be pointless. Seven of the 10 cars with the least depreciation are Japanese, headed by the Honda Jazz, and all of them are small. Five of the 10 cars with the greatest depreciation, headed by the Maybach 57S, are English, and none of them are cheap.

Parker's doesn't break the list down into model trims, but the least expensive Honda Jazz on Honda's UK site goes for £11,058 on-the-road (OTR). With 10,000 miles on the odo it will lose £1,379 in value a year later, or 12.5 percent of its value. A Maybach 57S goes for £297,945 OTR, and Parker's says it drops by £127,526 a year later after 10K miles, or 43 percent. If, however, you've spent £400,000 on a car after adding special features, you probably have better things to think about than your fleet's depreciation.

At the other end of the least depreciating vehicles is the Mitsubishi i, which loses £2,271 after a year, a slightly whopping 25 percent. That is almost as bad as the Ferrari F430, which does the 'best' on the most depreciating list, losing 'just' £37,188, or 27 percent. Back to that Maybach 57S for a moment, though: a dealer in Surrey has a used one for sale, with 10,000 miles, for £249,990. Perhaps he doesn't read Parker's?

Zetsche: Maybach "not significant or relevant," but a facelift is coming anyway

Maybach's 2009 sales through the first eleven months of this year have declined about 20 percent. That's at the kinder end of the industry average, all the more impressive because the "cheapest" one starts at $358,000. The part that's not so kind is the actual number of sales: 88, versus 110 last year.

Mercedes-Benz boss Dieter Zetsche has told Autocar that there's a facelifted Maybach on the way, but his comments sound like those of a player ready to get out of this game. With an aside that he thinks luxury buyers are becoming more discreet, he admitted that Maybach's addition to the company "is not significant or relevant" and "there are no plans in the long run." Correct us if we aren't remembering correctly, but last we checked Dr. Z wasn't the kind of guy to leave dead weight hanging around.

This is just speculation, but assuming he spoke of Rolls-Royce when he said "there are only two players in this market and we are one of them," (apparently Bentley's Mulsanne doesn't move his needle) perhaps Zetsche sees the top tier luxury race needing only one Maybach hit or a Rolls stumble to even up. Rolls sales have fallen 18 percent this year, but that's from 407 to 330. On the other hand, Zetsche's unwillingness to commit to saying a new Maybach is on the way makes us think you should get one while you can. Or not. Hat tip to Williem D!

Hi everybody! You're looking at the $612,000 Maybach Zeppelin 62. We've already given out opinion as to why the new Zeppelin range of Maybachs probably ain't worth the extra money. So never mind the economics of the car -- at least for a few minutes. What we have here is a big old gallery worth of images of the new ultra-exclusive top of the line Maybach in its natural habitat. That's right, running around the French Riviera. We'll get to sneak a peak at the new Zeppelin's interior come Geneva. Maybe even sit inside it if we can catch a security guard dozing on the job.

We've been hearing rumors of Maybach's demise for quite some time, but as soon as some pundit yells game over, Daimler's uber-luxury brand goes and releases another model -- like the kooky Landaulet. And we don't mean kooky in a derogatory way. We mean it in a "We're kooky and we'd love to pull up to a roller derby game in a white-on-white Landaulet with half a dozen of our closest friends" kind of way. Failing that, we wouldn't mind rolling 'round town in a Zeppelin. Especially if we're not paying.

Spy Shots: Maybach gets a nose job...sorta

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again .As if it knows already that slapping the Zeppelin name on its slow-selling flagship limo wouldn't do the trick, Daimler is back at it with a very mild facelift to its Maybach line.

It's so mild, in fact, that the test mule was able to circulate undisguised, as we really had to compare side by side to see what had been changed. But if you squint your eyes and tilt your head just so, you can see that the Maybach in the spy shots has a slightly different bumper and grille, and is said to be carrying LED headlamps, with similar mods to the rear. Maybach may be giving the interior a slight refresh, too, but they can't expect the almost indiscernible facelift to help it gain any territory on arch-rival Rolls-Royce and Bentley, can they?

Seemingly nothing - not the credit crunch, not miniscule sales, not its own lengthy, lugubrious looks - can kill the Maybach. People who have wondered how long Mercedes will keep dishing out tiny servings of the enormous cars can wonder no more: top guy Dieter Zetsche has said Maybach is here to stay, and that the brand "is not losing money."

We don't know how a division that moved just 146 cars last year, even if they start at $372,000, isn't losing money. But the $1.35 million Landaulet should help things, and to be to be fair, Zetsche has said before that Maybach's profitability or otherwise is not the issue - the car is a suitable competitor to Rolls-Royce and Bentley. And Daimler has demonstrated patience: it waded through the rough times with the smart car division for ten years, and now has black ink and a hot brand to show for it.

Dubious pioneer: Russia's first stolen Maybach

Picture this, you're stuffing your face full of gourmet food, giving your gullet a real workout, and you look up from your plate just in time to see your Maybach speed by. That last bite sticks in your throat, refusing to budge. Whoever absconded with your über-uglified super S-Class boots your driver out the door while rounding a corner. Now would not be a good time to recall that your €530,000 car is insured for a mere €300,000. Whoops. Vikotor Markov was enjoying a meal at the De Marco café when thieves swiped his Maybach 57. While introducing Mr. Chauffeur to Mr. Chlorfoorm is itself a dicey undertaking, Markov's 'Bach is the first to be swiped in Russia. The band of thugs that ambushed the driver and made off with the car is believed to be responsible for multiple luxury car thefts, including a passel of Bentleys. Perhaps it would have been wiser to just take the Metro.

Price of exclusivity rising: Maybachs get $3500 price increase

Mercedes has a novel idea to simulate sales of its sluggish-selling Rolls-Royce competitor. Since it's not selling as well as the company had hoped, why not crank up the price? The Maybach 57 and 62 have both received a $3,500 price increase for the 2008 model year, bringing their total tallies to $341,750 and $392,750 respectively. The Maybach marque has not lived up to Mercedes' expectations, so the German automaker been quietly smothering franchises with pillows, reducing the count of Maybach stores to 29 from an original number of 71. While the brand seems to be floundering, rumors abound of expanding the model count by offering a GL variant and a smaller S600-sized (but not priced) model. For now, though, with only two models, exclusivity seems to be Maybach's stock in trade, and now it's got an even higher price to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Maybach expansion may include convertible, SUV

By most accounts, Maybach managed to move less than 300 units in all of 2006. These are low numbers even for an ultra-exclusive personal limo manufacturer. We can personally attest to the Maybach sedan being a very fine road car that is sumptuous and coddling, while simultaneously being capable of amazing alacrity when given the spur. Sure, it couldn't quite keep up with its corporate cousin CLK DTM, but it will more than hold its own against a Silver Spur or Phantom. But even a good car can get a bit stale, and although the line was expanded with the "S" models, the 57 and 62 won't personally guarantee the marque's future. As much as we'd love to see the Exelero reach production (so would The Governator), it's far more likely we'll be seeing a cabrio/landoulet version of the current sedan, and possibly an SUV, as well.

CAR Magazine, in fact, is reporting that the 57 and 62 sedans will go topless, with a power cloth top dropping to expose that huge passenger compartment. They also predict that a version of the corporate Mercedes-Benz GL will get a Maybachover to create the ultimate SUV. Picture a new nose and tail and those Concorde-like seats inside. They guess that these models could quintuple Maybach output by adding 25-50 ragtops and up to 1,500 Sport Utes. We see the cabrio as a must-have in light of the debut of the Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe, even if Mercedes brings the Ocean Drive to fruition. The SUV seems like less of a necessity, but with a possible Bentley SUV in the future, this would make sense, too.
