About six months ago we tested the all-new 2014 Maserati Quattroporte GTS and its 523-horsepower 3.8-liter bi-turbo V8 engine, the latter being built in Maranello, Italy, by Ferrari. There were comments on both sides, mostly positive though, and we came away impressed by the sixth-generation Maserati sedan. This despite the fact that both we and you couldn't seem to get past the questionable aesthetics of the 20-inch Crono alloy wheels slapped on all of the test cars. Awkward looking they are, or is "distinctive" the word we're seeking?

For both the crucial United States market and the rest of the world, the most important version of the latest Quattroporte is bound to be the less powerful (and less expensive) bi-turbo V6 model we have just driven here in northern Italy; both rear-wheel-drive and Q4 all-wheel-drive versions. We spent nearly all day in the 404-hp 2014 Maserati Quattroporte S Q4, and found a lot that we prefer in the six-cylinder powertrain versus the champing aggression and $140,000 price tag of the GTS bi-turbo V8 model. These long and lanky executive-style statements traditionally thrive on the V8 mantra, so it will be interesting to watch how Maserati's need to use stronger and more efficient V6 engines is received by its six-figure customers.

It's a cynical thing to discuss so matter of factly, but descending into five-figure pricing for these rides actually damages their sales potential. It's bizarre, but keeping every trim of the Maserati Quattroporte north of $100,000 was crucial. So, is the 2014 Maserati Quattrporte S Q4 at a projected $108,000 base price worth it? To this stratum of clientele, apparently it is. Even the rear-wheel-drive S with this bi-turbo V6 will come in around $102,000 when it arrives in North America in mid-2014. (Or mid-2015, as yet to be decided.)

2014 Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 May 2013 11:57:00 EST.
Europe's continuing financial woe is forcing automakers to get creative, and while Fiat may be scaling back its volume vehicles, it's looking to ramp up production of the exclusive Maserati brand. Following the debut of a new Quattroporte sedan, Fiat wants to boost Maserati sales to 50,000 vehicles by 2015. Maserati may lose as much as €7 million ($9.05 million) this year, and Fiat is betting big on Chrysler platforms and dealers to turn that around.

Currently regarded as a low-volume boutique carmaker, Maserati sold just 6,159 units last year, and 4,700 units through three quarters of this year. For 2013, Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne is targeting 13,000 in sales of the redesigned Quattroporte alone. Fiat apparently wants the brand's low volume image to change, hoping to position it closer to BMW and Porsche in the market.

The recent unveiling of the new Quattroporte will be followed by more new vehicle launches, including a crossover utility called Levante, and a long-promised sub-Quattroporte sedan, called Ghibli. The latter will share certain components with the Chrysler 300 sedan in an effort to optimize production costs. The Ghibli will be positioned to take on the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It's all in an effort to turn the profit tide for Maserati and its parent company Fiat amidst European economic turmoil.
Maserati looking to book 13,000 sales of new Quattroporte in 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Dec 2012 18:30:00 EST.
If you watched 2011's The Dilemma and thought there's no way automakers would actually pipe artificial engine notes into their cars, think again. Several companies have been developing exhaust-note simulation systems, particularly for electric cars - be it for the sake of enjoyment or safety. But EVs aren't the only cars that will benefit from engine notes reproduced through speaker systems: so will some high-end performance machinery.

When BMW switched its M5 performance sedan from a V10 to a twin-turbo V8, it lost some of the exhaust note for which the model had become known, so it devised a system to pipe engine sounds into the cabin for the benefit of those inside. Now Maserati may be following a similar path.

A new report from What Car? indicates that Maserati is working on ways to simulate exhaust notes on its forthcoming models. Now if you're thinking that Maserati's engines - particularly the V8 developed and built for it by sister-company Ferrari - don't need any help in that department, well, you're right. But soon the Trident marque will be offering diesel engines as well.

The oil-burners are being developed for two new models of the current Quattroporte (pictured above) - one bigger than the current model and one smaller - and probably for the production version of the upcoming Kubang SUV (which will arrive wearing a different name). While the high-revving eight-cylinder gasoline versions may not require any aural stimulation, the diesel versions just might, and Maserati's boffins may just have the answer.
Maserati developing exhaust-note simulation system for upcoming diesels originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 May 2012 19:02:00 EST.
According to Automotive News, Maserati is looking to expand its dealer network in a big way. The luxury Italian automaker intends to double its dealers by the end of next year in an attempt to take advantage of a rash of new models heading for production. All told, Maserati intends to have around 500 showrooms open by the time the new vehicles roll in, and CEO Harald Wester says that the majority of the growth will happen this year. While the automaker sold just under 6,200 units last year, Wester wants to see that number swell to 40,000 in 2014 and 60,000 by 2015.

That's a substantial jump, but with an all-new Quattroporte on the way as well as a production version of the not-yet-named Kubang, Wester believes the numbers are attainable. Maserati has also made it clear the company will offer an entry level sedan positioned below the big Quattroporte, which will likely do a smart job of bringing in even more customers.
Maserati looking to double global dealer network to capitalize on new model push originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 08:59:00 EST.
The global meltdown that boiled to the surface in 2008 was really hard on a lot of car companies, but it was categorically horrendous for the tradition of Italian car craftsmanship out of Turin.

Of the three big players left in the traditional Italian design mecca - Italdesign Giugiaro, Bertone and Pininfarina - only Giugiaro has managed to avoid administrative takeover of its debts and assets by working out a major deal with longtime allies Volkswagen to sell them 90.1 percent of the firm. Both Bertone and Pininfarina are currently trusted to oversee their own operations but are nonetheless bonded to pay off significant operational debts to Italian banks after having hammered out merciful sweetheart low-interest deals. Neither has succeeded in closing mutually agreeable VW-style takeover bids, but both would probably prefer not doing so anyway.

The Geneva Motor Show has been treated as Italy's (and my) hometown gig ever since the once wonderful Turin auto show fizzled away in 2002. One of the great spectacles of the Swiss salon is seeing the three major houses unveil their trinkets to the press, their stands traditionally placed side-by-side for maximum effect. This year, Italdesign Giugiaro will naturally show off some Volkswagen conceptual thinking, while Bertone has once again chosen a whimsical dream showcar approach with its 1970 Stratos-inspired Nuccio concept meant to commemorate Corrozzeria Bertone's centenary.

But the Pininfarina stand will most likely steal the attention of showgoers. How can you lose with a spanking new and hot Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and a concept that seems to hint at a future replacement for the Maserati Quattroporte?
Continue reading Autoblog goes one-on-one with the Pininfarina Cambiano Concept [w/video]

Autoblog goes one-on-one with the Pininfarina Cambiano Concept [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 11:57:00 EST.
A diesel Maserati? Perish the thought! But if Porsche and the BMW M division can make diesels, anything is possible. And that appears to be just what Maserati has planned.

The Modenese automaker, as you may recall, is planning not just one replacement for the current Quattroporte, but two. The Quattroporte itself (pictured above) will grow in size to proportions similar to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Jaguar XJ, while a smaller model - internally dubbed Maseratina - will be closer to the E-Class or XF. It's that model that's tipped to get a diesel version.

According to AutoBild, however, that diesel will be no slouch, packing some 300 horsepower and over 500 pound-feet of torque. With those kinds of figures, it would be significantly more powerful than the Porsche Panamera diesel, which packs about 250 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Its inclusion in the line-up would surely help Maserati increase its market penetration, particularly in Europe where diesels account for a high proportion of sales in the segment.
Maserati planning diesel version of upcoming "Maseratina" baby Quattroporte originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Feb 2012 10:00:00 EST.
We'll forgive you if you haven't heard of the Superstars Series. It's only been around since 2004 (the International category since 2007) and all of the races take place in Europe - in fact over half took place this season in Italy. But similar to other national touring car championships - Germany's DTM, Japan's Super GT and Australia's V8 Supercars come to mind - the Superstars Series packs some serious racing machinery.

Take the Maserati Quattroporte EVO, for example. If that sounds badass to you, just look at the thing, because it is. It's based, of course, on the Trident marque's four-door model, which is already desirable enough on its own, but has been race prepped with an extreme wide-body kit and all the trimmings. It's the car with which Andrea Bertolini - a long-time Ferrari and Maserati factory driver who took the FIA GT1 championship in the MC12 he helped develop - and his Swiss Team just clinched the championship.

It's the first time that a Maserati has won the series title, previous champions having raced cars based on the BMW M3, Audi RS4 and Jaguar S-Type R. The formula calls for V8 engines, no turbos, based on four-seaters with two doors or four, and the rest of the field is made up of everything from the Chevy Lumina (a rebadged Holden) and Cadillac CTS-V to the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and Porsche Panamera S. All in all, ten marques are represented, but this year Maserati was crowned champion of them all. Check out the machine with which they did it in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Maserati claims title in Superstars Series with Quattroporte Evo

Maserati claims title in Superstars Series with Quattroporte Evo originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 08:00:00 EST.
Expanding an automotive empire is tricky business. You can either pit one brand within the group against another, or you have to differentiate them significantly. Volkswagen has opted for the former, with numerous competitors from different group brands in the same segments, but the Fiat/Chrysler group over which Sergio Marchionne presides is going the other route.

As a result, Marchionne insists that Ferrari isn't after the same market that the likes of Porsche and Bentley - both part of the Volkswagen group - currently pursue. Ferrari, he says, is in a league of its own, but in fact it plays against the likes of Lamborghini and Bugatti. So what is Marchionne pitting against Porsche and Bentley? Maserati.

Reiterating that Ferrari will never build an SUV or a four-door sedan, Marchionne points to Maserati to fill those niches. In order to get there, as we know, the Trident marque is launching a pair of sedans - one larger and one smaller - to succeed the current Quattroporte, and the SUV currently known as the Kubang, previewed in concept form at the Frankfurt show last month.

Together with the GranTurismo range - the convertible version of which Marchionne is pictured with above - the new models are pegged to boost Maserati's sales up tenfold over the course of the coming years, from the 5,675 units it sold last year up to 55,000 or even 60,000 units. Ferrari's sales, meanwhile, will be limited to 10,000 units from the 6,573 it sold last year in markets around the world.
Marchionne aims Maserati at Porsche and Bentley originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Oct 2011 18:32:00 EST.
Maserati is recalling Quattroporte and GranTurismo vehicles from the 2009 model year over poorly machined rear tie-rods that could fail. The loss of rear tie-rods is not something to be taken lightly - nothing like rear suspension destruction to soil your luxurious driving experience. The recall should begin next month and affects a total of 763 cars.

The affected cars were built between July and September of 2008. Maserati dealers will replace the shoddy tie-rods, install a tie-rod kit and do a wheel alignment. Of course, the repairs won't cost Maserati owners a cent.
Maserati Quattroporte and GranTurismo recalled over tie-rods originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 11:01:00 EST.
Maserati needs to make major moves if it wants to hit Fiat Group CEO Sergio Marchionne's aggressive sales target. Marchionne wants to see a tenfold increase in Maserati sales, and one of the models that will help him get there is a new sedan, presumably the next-generation Quattroporte. Actually, make that two different sedans, because Marchionne is prepping luxury sleds both small and large.

What will underpin the four-door Maseratis? Since Sergio has the Chrysler parts bin to play with, he will call upon components from both the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Avenger. Also, he has Fiat powertrain parts at his fingertips, so you can expect to see a completely reworked version of the MultiAir engine. In Maserati guise, it will take advantage of forced induction, and should see power output in the 400-horsepower range.
Maserati will use Chrysler and Fiat parts to make Quattroporte replacements originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 10:59:00 EST.
Sergio Marchionne is looking to expand the Fiat Group empire, and one of Mr. M's plans is to bringing more Maserati vehicles into the world. And we're not talking about a small jump in sales either. Marchionne wants to expand Maserati sales tenfold.

That's a rather bold undertaking, and would require Maserati to climb from 5,675 units sold last year to over 50,000 per year. How does Marchionne intend to accomplish this feat? Through the introduction of new models to reach a wider audience.

The planned new additions include a Quattroporte replacement, a smaller sedan and a sport utility vehicle. The larger family will certainly help attract more eyeballs, but is it enough to push sales 10 times higher? We think that might be a bit ambitious, but as the number of wealthy citizens climbs around the world it's certainly possible.
Marchionne seeking 10x sales increase for Maserati? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 08:32:00 EST. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has been working hard to improve the automaker's labor situation in Italy, and it appears the effort is beginning to pay off. Automotive News reports that Fiat has come to an agreement with the union at the former Bertone plant, with increased work shifts and more flexible overtime as part of the agreement. The union initially turned down an offer from Fiat, which prompted the Italian automaker to suspend plans to rebuild the plant.

The agreement, which was agreed to by 88 percent of the workforce, makes way for Fiat to invest $739 million to overhaul the facility. Fiat plans to make the next generation Maserati Quattroporte at the facility, which has a reported launch date of mid-2013. The plant is also scheduled to build a midsize Maserati that will be tasked to take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E Class and the BMW 5 Series. The sedan is scheduled to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Fiat workers agree to concessions at former Bertone plant originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 May 2011 16:02:00 EST.
Major automakers take note: if you want to see how far your can go with a single platform, look towards small exotic automakers like Maserati or Aston Martin.

Both these rival marques build their entire lineup on a single platform each (with occasional exceptions like the MC12 or One-77, respectively). In Maserati's case, the latest addition is the GranTurismo MC Stradale (known just as the GranTurismo MC on this side of the Atlantic). And to tie the family together, the Modenese automaker has released this video that showcases the MC against a backdrop that also includes the standard GranTurismo coupe, the GranCabrio (known here as the GranTurismo Convertible) and the Quattroporte flagship.

Fiat has run into resistance from Italian unions in the past, and CEO Sergio Marchionne has been pushing the Fabbrica Italia plan to make things right. The business plan promises to invest in more Italian jobs in exchange for more flexible union deals - a home run for all parties involved, but Italy's cadre of unions have been slow to take Fiat up on its offer.

Automotive News reports that the Turin-based automaker has suspended a $710 million investment in the former Bertone plant after Fiat failed to reach an agreement with the FIOM union that represents the plant. The plant, which Fiat purchased back in 2009, had been earmarked to build the next generation Maserati Quattroporte and a midsized sedan to take on the likes of the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

A Fiat spokesperson reportedly told AN that FIOM's stance isn't acceptable, adding "right now, the conditions are not there to launch the planned investments." That doesn't mean that a deal is permanently out of the question, but it may give FIOM some motivation to see things Fiat's way. The midsize sedan is scheduled to arrive in Europe early in 2012, followed by the next Quattroporte sometime in 2013.

Maserati is likely bringing a replacement for its aging Quattroporte to the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year, along with a first glimpse of its proposed mid-range sedan that likely won't drop until 2014. The addition of a new model means Maserati is looking to expand its global sales total from just over 5,000 units in 2010 to something like 20,000/year somewhere down the road.

As for the new Quattroporte, the design was done in house by Maserati and will likely ape the design language of the GranTurismo Coupe and Cabriolet. For power, Maserati is sticking with its venerable 4.7-liter V8, although a few improvements - including fuel economy - are being made.

No word on what the new Quattroporte will cost, but the proposed "entry level" car is slated to start around $75,000 to compete with the likes of the Porsche Panamera. With that in mind, we'd expect the new Quattroporte to be right in line with the current model, if not a little more spendy.

If you've been listening to the whispers about a new smaller version of the Maserati Quattroporte and wondering exactly what the machine will look like when it debuts, you can quit your pondering. Sort of. Our task force of stealthy spy photographers have managed to lay their lenses on a mule version of the new baby Quattroporte. This particular evaluation car sports a shorter wheelbase and smaller brakes than its bigger brother, and a single exhaust outlet hints to a slightly lower level of performance. Though this tester seems to have raided the parts bin of the larger Quattroporte for some ill-fitting glass, we're told that the production version of the car will look significantly different.

Maserati has been itching to tango with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class, Jaguar XFR and BMW M5, and this machine could be the beast that allows the company to do just that. As of right now, there's no indication as to exactly what will lurk underhood when it debuts in 2012, though with a mule running around, we're guessing it won't be too long before we hear more about the smaller Quattroporte's drivetrain.

MC. The letters are sacrosanct to fans of the Trident marque and its venerable racing prowess. They stand for Maserati Corse, and you may recognize them from the MC12, the Enzo-based homologation special that's still kickin' ass and taking names in the FIA GT1 series. More recently the Modenese automaker rolled out a racing version of its GranTurismo coupe bearing those same letters, which has since been followed by a roadgoing version of said racer called the MC Stradale. There've been MC Sport Line accessories for the GranTurismo S as well, but until now the Quattroporte has been left out of the fun.

Kicking things off for its four-door model, Maserati has unveiled the Quattroporte MC Sport in Sydney at the Australian International Auto Show. So what are we looking at, a road-going version of the touring car currently being flogged around Italy's best circuits in the Superstars series? Unfortunately not. What you're looking at here is the existing Quattroporte Sport GT S - already one heck of a car - with some added trim: carbon fiber interior accents and aluminum pedals, and little else. Not much on their own, but then this is how Modena kicked off the MC program for the GranTurismo, so we're hoping this is the harbinger of things to come.

We've heard the rumors about a Baby Quattroporte for some time now and Inside Line managed to wrangle up some new details on the upcoming Maserati. The car is expected to arrive sometime next fall and will take aim at the likes of the BMW M5, Jaguar XFR and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. While the Quattroporte received its lines from Pininfarina, the smaller Maserati will be penned at Centro Stile Fiat - Fiat's in-house design studio.

Currently, the automaker is deciding where the sporty luxury sedan will be built. The Modena factory is running at full-tilt so the next choice seems to be Bertone's Turin plant.

Maserati Quattroporte Hearse - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Remember when we told you about Intercar Modena turning a Maserati Quattroporte into hearse? We're not sure if this is one of theirs, but the number of Maserati hearses built has to be very low, but that hasn't stopped some fortunate soul from capturing one in the wild. The video after the jump is quick but the car is clearly visible. It's a rare spotting of a vehicle people are dying to get into (Thank you! Try the veal!).

When you get set to leave this world, you may want to go out in style. Cadillacs and Lincolns are the chariots of commoners. A Mercedes is a step in the right direction. There are some, however, with a privileged palate and serious sense of style, and some of them will doubtlessly opt for coachbuilt Italian splendor. The Maserati Quattroporte hearse is a wonderful example of how someone can shoot through to the other side in fine style. Put on your best black suit and make the jump to see the video. Thanks for the tip, Monty!

1989 Chrysler TC by Maserati

As excitement and anticipation mount for the arrival of a new "entry-level" sedan from Maserati, so do the rumors. The new model, expected to slot in below the current Quattroporte, has been the subject of much conjecture and speculation, but the latest hits a little closer to home.

According to reports, the junior QP could share its underpinnings with the next Chrysler 300C. This in contrast with previous reports that the Trident marque was looking to develop a new platform for the model, a move that would be decidedly more expensive for a Fiat/Chrysler empire already spread too thin. (Closer collaboration is expected between the Chrysler and Lancia divisions, which could also lead to a next-gen 300-based successor to the discontinued Lancia Thesis.)

As sources point out, this wouldn't be the first time that Maserati and Chrysler have gotten into bed with each other. Close ties between onetime Chrysler chief Lee Iacocca and Alejandro de Tomaso (of the eponymous sportscar company that once owned Maserati) led to the disastrous badge-whoring exercise known as the Chrysler TC by Maserati (pictured above). If the latest reports come to fruition, we'd certainly hope the outcome would be in a different league altogether.
