As a following act to the redesigned Quattroporte and the recently unveiled 2014 Maserati Ghibli, Maserati will be releasing a slew of new products in the coming years, including the next-generation GranTurismo, the all-new Levante SUV and a new 911-fighting coupe - possibly called Gran Sport. While all of this information was detailed last year in a leaked product plan document, there were no dates associated with any of the new products. Auto Express is now reporting that the new GranTurismo will be out in 2015 and the new smaller coupe is expected out in 2016.

According to the report, the new coupe will be smaller and sportier than the GranTurismo, and it will feature a mid-engine layout with a platform that isn't shared with the Alfa Romeo 4C. This product onslaught is a part of Maserati's plan to increase sales to 50,000 units globally by 2015.
Maserati's small two-seater could arrive by 2016 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 May 2013 09:28:00 EST.
If you're of the opinion that Maserati has gone soft, you're not alone. The company that once dominated grand prix racing and built mid-engined exotics today builds enticing, but relatively soft grand tourers with automatic transmissions. But there's a reason for that. Since it was integrated into the Fiat group, the Trident marque had to find its own place, and competing head-on with sister-company Ferrari wasn't an option.

So, Maserati's focus was altered to the point that now it's preparing to launch two new sedans and an SUV. But don't book it into a retirement community just yet, because word has it that the Modenese automaker is also working on a hardcore, mid-engined V8 sports car to bring the marque back to its roots and show the world exactly of what it is capable.

The first report on the project came in last month, and now the performance-obsessed auto scribes over at Evo say they have some more details for us. And it's already sounding drool-worthy. The lightweight supercar is to revive the GranSport name last used on the final version of the 4200-series Maserati Coupe that was replaced by the GranTurismo in 2007. The project is reportedly being driven by Harald Wester, who in addition to presiding over Maserati, is also chief executive of Alfa Romeo.

Having witnessed the enthusiasm which the 4C (pictured above in conceptual liquid-metal finish form) has drummed up for Alfa, Wester apparently wants the same for Maserati. The same sort of carbon monocoque construction would be employed, but where the 4C will use a four-cylinder engine, the GranSport would be built around the 454-horsepower 4.7-liter V8 built by Ferrari for the latest GranTurismo Sport. With weight ambitiously targeted to undercut the Ferrari 458 Italia by several hundred pounds, that could prove one devastatingly quick package.

The GranSport would also aim to undercut the 458 in price to take on the upper end of the Porsche 911 range where the Turbo and GT3 models sit. Wester says production wouldn't be limited by design, but he expects they could sell betweem 1,500 and 2,000 units per year after introducing it sometime around 2015. Selling the Fiat board on the idea, however, is another matter entirely.
Maserati GranSport to take Alfa 4C approach... with V8 power originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jun 2012 08:44:00 EST.
If you've gotten used to Maserati being centered around two model lines - GranTurismo and Quattroporte - based on the same platform, get ready to broaden your horizons as the Modenese automaker does the same. Maserati has a vast array of new products in the pipeline, including a pair of new sedans and a new SUV set to be built in Detroit, plus production of the 4C sportscar for sister-company Alfa Romeo. And now reports are emerging that its long-rumored plans to take on the Porsche 911 with a new sportscar are coming to fruition.

According to the reports from Italy fueled by comments attributed to Maserati CEO Harald J. Wester, the model could revive the GranSport - a name last used on the ultimate iteration of the 4200 GT coupe that preceded the current GranTurismo. Only this time, it would be a mid-engined V8 supercar similar in approach to the Audi R8.

If that sounds suspiciously close to the Ferrari 458 Italia, the rumors suggest that it would undercut its big brother's price at under $200k. After all, the sister brands didn't seem to have any trouble bringing the Maserati GranCabrio and Ferrari California into the same arena, or to turning the Enzo into the MC12 - pictured above - the last mid-engined supercar the Trident marque produced. Which gives us hope that this particular product of the rumormill could amount to something. And when we're talking about mid-engined supercars from Italy, that could be a very good thing indeed.
Maserati preparing assault on Porsche 911 with new mid-engined GranSport originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 May 2012 17:32:00 EST.
