The V16 Hydra Schmidt Roadster is the kind of bolide that makes kids rather be villains than do-gooders. It was the personal carriage of Johann Schmidt who, as alias Red Skull, was Adolf Hitler's head of weaponry, Captain America's nemesis and one of "the greatest threats to humanity." In his spare time as a member of the Hydra terrorist group, Red Skull had access to alien technology that went into lots of motorized Hydra goodies, but his roadster earned its title of fastest fictitious road car in the world from nothing more exotic than a ginormous airplane engine.

In the "real" world of movies, Red Skull's movie car for Captain America was one of the concepts created by Daniel Simon, a former Volkswagen Group concept car designer who left the nest to make fantastical things. Underneath bodywork cued off of the Mercedes-Benz 540K, Mercedes G4 four-wheel drive and vintage Duesenberg and Bentley design language is a V8 dragster engine from Ford, all settled on a truck chassis and truck wheels.

Our suggestion for a Time Waster of the Day is to check out the rest of Simon's site, where he scoops on more of his work like the light cycles from Tron Legacy, the Lotus LMP2 livery and the Bugatti Veyron Hermès. His tagline is "Style For All Galaxies." Right on.
What would a superhero movie be without the fancy cars? Well, it would still be a superhero movie, we suppose, but we prefer the kind that has some flashy wheels. Like the upcoming Marvel flick The Avengers.

As you may have heard, Acura signed a multi-picture deal with Marvel to have its cars featured in a series of superhero movies, and indeed several already have. But for The Avengers, Acura had to work up something special enough to replace Tony Stark's Audi R8. Since the old NSX was long out of production when they began shooting and the new one wasn't ready yet, the Japanese automaker and the film studio put together something of a hybrid.

Not a hybrid as we tend to use the term in automotive spheres, but an amalgamation of the old NSX and the new one. They took a 1991 NSX and gave it a new roadster body to mimic the concept car that's been making the rounds of the auto show circuit.

Our compatriots over at Inside Line got a behind-the-scenes look at the roadster, along with the kitted-out MDX crossover and a TL with a similar treatment. Scroll down to watch the video clips they put together, and the corresponding article here.
Continue reading Inside Line snags drive of Acura NSX Roadster from The Avengers

Inside Line snags drive of Acura NSX Roadster from The Avengers originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 20:00:00 EST.
We have to admit to being fairly smitten with the promise of the low-slung Acura NSX concept that debuted at the Detroit Auto Show back in January. But for this moment - and for the next several moments - "promise" is all it is, because Acura says we shouldn't expect an NSX in showrooms until sometime around 2015. (Back in January, Acura advised that the production car is "expected to debut in the next three years.") Until then, Honda's premium outpost is going to do whatever it can to stoke the fires to keep interest high, including star-studded Super Bowl commercial appearances and this - a drophead spinoff that will be Tony Stark's ride in this summer's The Avengers blockbuster from Marvel.

We first saw this car thanks to some intrepid movie set shots by would-be paparazzi back in early October, but this is the first official acknowledgement and image of the car that we've seen. Early in March, we told you about alleged patent drawings of an NSX convertible that was very similar to the Detroit showcar, which some interpreted as Acura planning both a fixed-head coupe and a roadster for production. However, those drawings look an awful lot like the car shown here with the exception of small details like a unique wheel pattern and differing seatbacks, so while it's possible that Acura is pondering a topless NSX, the renderings could have simply been to protect design rights to the movie car, especially considering that neither Stark's ride nor the patent drawings appear to have headlamps.

We'll have to wait and see what Acura decides regarding its Ohio-built all-wheel-drive hybrid supercar, but we suspect that even if it does greenlight a convertible version, we probably won't see it until 2016. Which is... a really long time to keep believing in a promise.
Continue reading Acura previews Tony Stark's NSX roadster from The Avengers

Acura previews Tony Stark's NSX roadster from The Avengers originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 16:30:00 EST.
As children of the '80s, we remember Marvel's What The-? series of comic books with fond memories. More recently, it appears the series has migrated to video on YouTube. Either way, playing parodies with Marvel's most beloved characters makes for a romping good time, and Toyota has decided to buddy-up with the comic producer to help sell the Yaris.

The first episode of the Marvel/Toyota universe features one Dr. Bruce Banner, also known as The Incredible Hulk. After a brief cameo by Red Hulk, Mr. Banner hooks up with Dr. Strange and the two of them go on a road trip. In a Toyota Yaris, of course...

Along the way, they happen upon The Punisher, and add a third wheel to their roving band of superheroes. Oh, and they decided to head for Cleveland, Ohio, which has become amazing. Trust us when we tell you it's all rather humorous. Click past the break to watch The Incredible Drive, Part 1.
Continue reading The Incredible Hulk drives... a Toyota Yaris?

The Incredible Hulk drives... a Toyota Yaris? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 19:59:00 EST. Volkswagen created a serious stir with its Super Bowl commercial featuring an adorably pint-size Darth Vader, and now Marvel Comics is riffing on the same theme as part of the run-up to the upcoming Thor feature film. The studio has gone through the trouble of recreating the German automaker's "The Force" ad nearly scene-for-scene... with one notable exception.

Despite the fact that Acura has saddled up with Marvel for the latest comic flick, the hero car in this particular spot is not the new TL. That's probably all for the best given the final outcome.

While Volkswagen's tiny Vader couldn't quite bend the force to his will, this runt manages to have a little better luck with Thor's hammer. We won't spoil the ending for you. You'll just have to check out the full spot in the video after the jump.
