<img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="0" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/05/10013sp.jpg" />Following more than a week of controversy regarding its livery, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ferrari/">Ferrari</a> has capitulated for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. For more than a decade, the Ferrari Formula One team has been sponsored by Marlboro cigarettes. Ever since tobacco sponsorship was banned from F1, however, traditional Marlboro branding has been absent from the Italian cars.<br />
<br />
In recent weeks, though, accusations flew, alleging that the replacement "bar code" logo adorning the Ferraris' engine covers was merely a subliminal reference to the tobacco brand. After Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo insisted just days ago that the "argument was pointless," the cars appeared in Barcelona devoid of the controversial livery. Instead, the cars now have a simple red rectangle wear the bar code once was. <br />

Someone within Ferrari has apparently had a change of heart, as many noticed at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/07/the-tables-turn-at-the-bahrain-grand-prix-spoiler-alert/">Bahrain Grand Prix</a> earlier this month that the F2008 car was without its familiar cigarette advertisements, despite the laws of that country allowing their presence. In their place was what's been referred to as the "barcode" livery, which some say looks like the Marlboro branding from a distance, but is really just white markings that don't mean anything. After the race, Ferrari did confirm that Marlboro logos would no longer appear on its cars, which kind of ends an era of sorts. Despite the absence of its logos on the F2008, Marlboro is reportedly still happy to be a sponsor of Ferrari and will remain so until at least 2011 when the contract it signed worth around $1 billion runs out.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-f2008-in-bahrain">Ferrari F2008 in Bahrain</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-f2008-in-bahrain/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/78799931_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-f2008-in-bahrain/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/78796321_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-f2008-in-bahrain/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/78796329_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-f2008-in-bahrain/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/78796385_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-f2008-in-bahrain/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/78842925_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.homeofsport.com/f1/news/item.aspx?id=21742">Home of Sport</a>, Photos by VINCENZO PINTO/AFP/Getty]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/16/ferrari-sends-marlboro-logos-to-the-ashtray/">Ferrari sends Marlboro logos to the ashtray</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 16 Apr 2008 19:57:00 EST.
