Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione

Italy is unfortunately no stranger to earthquakes, thus neither is the exotic automaker and racing team whose logo bears the country's flag. When disaster struck in Abruzzo, Ferrari launched a special-edition F430 to raise funds for its relief, and has been contributing to rebuilding the stricken region ever since. When the tsunami hit in Japan, Ferrari contributed millions to its aid. Now another earthquake has hit Italy - in the same part of the country that hosts Ferrari's headquarters in Maranello. The company immediately halted operations to let its employees be with their families, and is now preparing for an online auction to raise funds for relief efforts in the region.

The auction will be hosted at FerrariStore.com, and will of course include all manner of Ferrari-branded merchandise - including racing helmets and suits worn in grands prix by Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. But there are some bigger items as well, including a V8 engine from one of the Scuderia's F1 cars, and, at the top of the list, a 599XX Evoluzione. The most advanced of the company's developmental track cars, the 599XX Evo is worth over $1.6 million, but will likely raise far more than that - and help the disaster relief efforts that have forced the new Italian federal government to raise fuel taxes - when the bidding starts next week. Ferrari 250 GT SWB and Breadvan at Ferrari Museum

Surely the most important of the classic Ferraris is the 250 series. Over its decade of production, the 250 series gave us some of the most recognizable models of the marque's history, including the GTO, the Testa Rossa, the Lusso and the original California Spyder.

This year Ferrari is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the series that was built around Giachino Colombo's enduring 3.0-liter V12. To mark the occasion, the Ferrari Museum in Maranello is displaying two unique and important 250s from its historical archives. One is the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta that Stirling Moss drove to victory at four races in 1961. The second is the so-called Breadvan, which was commissioned by Count Volpi di Musurata and developed by Piero Drogo and Giotto Bizzarrini. It was one of the original shooting brakes and provided the inspiration for the new FF.

The two are already on display in the museum for any visitor to see, but if your travel plans aren't sending you to Maranello anytime soon, you can still check them out in the photo gallery above and the press release below.

Gilles Villeneuve in the 1979 Ferrari 312 T4

History has a way of aggrandizing the fallen, but few drivers have been as dearly missed as Gilles Villeneuve. Renowned for his ability to wrestle blistering lap times - often sideways - out of some of the most difficult cars to handle, the French Canadian driver remains a fan favorite to legions of Formula 1 fans and tifosi the world over.

Tragically, Gilles died in a crash while qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix in 1982. With the thirtieth anniversary of his death coming up, Ferrari is planning a tribute event at its Fiorano test track in Maranello that will reunite the Villeneuve name with the Scuderia to which he gave his life.

On May 8, Gilles' son Jacques Villeneuve will pilot the Ferrari 312 T4 that his father drove to three victories and four second-place finishes to help Ferrari secure the constructors' title and his teammate Jody Scheckter the drivers' title.

It may prove the first time in Jacques' career that he'll drive a Ferrari F1 car. A former world champion himself, Jacques had reportedly been offered a seat at Ferrari after winning the title in 1997, but turned it down to pursue the opportunity to build up the British American Racing team that would later be taken over by Honda, win the title as Brawn GP and rebrand itself under the Mercedes banner under which it races today.

Ferrari SP12 EPC patent drawing

You'd expect someone with a nickname like "hotshoe" or "leadfoot" to be behind the wheel of a Ferrari. "Slowhand" less so, but that's the nickname of one Eric Clapton, who in addition to being one of the most highly acclaimed rock and blues guitarists of all time also happens to be a huge nut for the Prancing Horse marque. In fact, Clapton is understood to have swung by Maranello a couple of years back, where he presumably got the reddest of red carpet treatments while placing an order for a custom Ferrari.

That unique one-off, called the SP12 EPC has been dropping on and off of our radar, with some grainy snapshots a couple of weeks ago and some hasty video footage of the custom creation leaving a dealership in the UK a few days thereafter. But if those didn't provide clear enough a picture for you, a batch of alleged patent renderings have now surfaced showing every line of the car's bespoke shape. Fernando Alonso's Ferrari FF

Even at a team like Ferrari (which has more grand prix victories to its name than any other team in Formula One - 217 to be specific), every win counts. Especially these days when they're far more scarce than they were in the Michael Schumacher days of back-to-back championships. So when Fernando Alonso took home the checkered flag in Malaysia this past weekend, there was cause for celebration in Maranello.

After winning the second race of the season and taking the lead in the standings, Alonso swung by Ferrari headquarters for a nice long chat with chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, some training in the on-site gym and the traditional raising of the flag to mark the occasion, after which the two-time world champion apparently was gifted a brand-spankin' new Ferrari FF.

Whether the four-seat, all-wheel-drive, V12-powered shooting brake was a bonus outlined in his contract or a simple gesture of appreciation from his employers is likely known only by Alonso, Montezemolo and very few others, but either way, we doubt Fernando is complaining. The FF joins a growing stable of cars the star driver has received since signing with Ferrari, including a custom 458 Italia, a Maserati GranTourismo Convertible, an Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari and a special edition Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Nice work if you can get it.

snow at Fiorano

If you grew up in a sufficiently northern climate, you probably remember staying eagerly tuned in to the local radio or television station, praying on a cold day that enough snow would have fallen for them to close the schools. Well that's what's happened in the Modena area in northern Italy, but while the school children may be celebrating in their jammies, the racing fans among them will be disappointed to learn that the snow has caused the launch of the latest Scuderia Ferrari single-seater to be canceled.

Enough snow, as you can see from the photo above, has fallen on Maranello to not only close down the team's private Fiorano test track - which was supposed to be used for the car's first demonstration run - but also all the roads leading to and from the site, preventing the motorsport press from getting there.

Ferrari will undoubtedly reschedule or make alternate arrangements to unveil the new car, but for now, the latest scarlet speedster will have to stay under wraps. Official announcements can be found after the jump.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 delivered to Scuderia Ferrari

There's no end to the perks of being a Formula One racing driver, especially if you happen to drive for Scuderia Ferrari. As if piloting one of the fastest F1 cars on the grid weren't enough, Ferrari has gifted each of its gifted drivers his own 458 Italia, Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari and Maserati GranCabrio, to name just a few. And something tells us that if either Fernando Alonso or Felipe Massa wanted anything else from the expansive Fiat-Chrysler product range - say, a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, for example - that would hardly pose a problem.

That's exactly what the talented duo got the other day at the Fiorano test track at Ferrari headquarters in Maranello, where the first two examples of the new SRT8 in Europe were delivered to the pair of stars. Certainly, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 has plenty to love, what with its 6.4-liter Hemi V8 and 5-second dash to 62 mph, but Fernando And Felipe got more than that.

These two unique examples were decked out in Rosso Corso , with matte black front grille, a black offset racing stripe, black roof, carbon fiber trim and white accents. Ride height was lowered by 1.5 inches on unique forged and painted 20-inch alloys, and the interior has similarly been decked out in red leather accents and top-stitching and even yellow dials on the instruments.

Nice work if you can get it. All you have to do is convince the most victorious team in motorsport that you've got what it takes to be world champion, and you can have one too. Otherwise you can follow the jump for the press release and scope out the high-res images in the gallery above.

Ferrari California spy shot

Ferrari has worked hard over the past several years at differentiating its products from each other. Where its lineup once consisted principally of mid-engined supercars of different sizes, today's range includes as well a front-engined GT, an all-wheel-drive shooting brake and a 2+2 hardtop cabriolet. The latter is known as the California, and while it certainly serves a purpose in Maranello's catalog, it's hardly the most heart-pumping Prancing Horse on offer.

That's where these spy shots come in. Following reports that Ferrari was preparing to update the cabrio with a combination of increased engine output and reduced weight, we've now got the spy shots to prove it.

This test mule seen driving Ferrari's private Fiorano test track and the vicinity, aside from sporting a rather garish red and black color paint and wrap job, has its hood all carved up like a pumpkin. There's a pair of NACA ducts on the nose, some strange bulbous protrusion on the passenger side, and the whole hood doesn't seem to want to close. The question is, what's that modified hood hiding?

According to our paparazzi on the scene, the prototype had a distinctive turbo wail. If that's the case, this would be the first time Ferrari's used forced induction on a road car since the F40. Whether the upgrades will feature on a straightforward update for the California or breed a more hard-core version along the lines of the 430 Scuderia or 599 GTO remains to be seen, but Ferrari obviously has something up its sleeve for its most sedate model.

The latest exotic two-door to wear the Cavillino Rampante is the Ferrari 458 Spider, and our friends at eGarage.com hopped a plane to Maranello so they could see it in person. How's it look? How do you think it looks? The already gorgeous coupe has been given a styling kick that also turns the aural pleasure knob to 12 (11 is so last year).

Sure, the 458 coupe will be the choice of those seeking adventure on the track. The 458 Spider, however, will provide the perfect soundtrack to a life well lived. The affluent among us will have to live in Europe to get first crack at the car, which goes on sale there in the spring of 2012. Ferrari faithful here in the U.S. will have to wait until the end of 2012 to put a droptop 458 in their garage.

Ferrari summer camp

Did you go to camp when you were a kid? If you did, what kind of camp was it? These days there's all kinds: day camp, country camp, sports camp, sailing camp, fat camp... you name it, there's a camp for it. But after watching this video, we get the distinct feeling that we went to the wrong one. Where we should have gone was Ferrari camp.

Ferrari's headquarters in Maranello, you see, isn't just a factory and an office tower. It's got a full village for employees, complete with a gym, restaurant, bar... you name it. And come summer time, it's even got a day camp. You know, for the kids.

Recently, the company's affable chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo stopped by the camp to see what the bambini were up to, and brought along Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa and a few others for the day. Back in the early 1990s, an impressive 85 percent of all Ferrari models were dressed in red paint. While we can understand that Ferrari and red go together like peanut butter and jelly (or red white and... green), it's tough to understand how 85 percent of all customers could buy such a rare horse, yet insist upon such a common color. Apparently, more recent Ferrari owners agree, since the number of Prancing Horses in rosso have dropped to "only" 45 percent for 2010.

Greater differentiation is one reason for the decrease in the color red, but it also helps that Ferrari has become far better at utilizing the rest of the color spectrum. The automaker tells us in the post-jump press release that two-tone liveries have become one of the latest crazes, with the roof painted a different color than the rest of the body. Ferrari has also says it has perfected a three-layer painting technique that utilizes three coats of paint for a deeper and more brilliant color than has been offered in the past.

Perhaps the coolest thing Ferrari is doing with color is customizing its finish to just about any paint the customer desires. For example, if you like the color of the yellow fire hydrant at the end of your street, simply send a sample to the folks in Maranello, and they'll match it. Not that we'd recommend it...

Ferrari's efforts to add a bit more color to the most famous lineup of exotic supercars is obviously paying dividends. The automaker claims that special-order finishes have gone up from only one percent 10 years ago to 10 percent today. So go ahead, don't be yellow. Order your Ferrari in Blu Scozia, Avio Met or Vinaccia.

The 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia is magnificent. With a vast array of electronic wizardry, a glorious 570-horsepower mid-mounted V8, statuesque bodywork, the track manners of an F1 car and the street manners of sleeping kitten, it may be the finest supercar available.

There is, however, a catch. The myriad controls for all those electronics and the information output by the car is enough to give even the most ADD driver sensory overload. With that in mind, Ferrari has released a video to walk you through the 458 Italia's controls one at a time, breaking down their use and functionality.

Study the vid carefully a couple times, and you can stop worrying about hitting the turn signal when you simply wanted to tune the radio. Tired of turning off traction control when what you wanted to do was de-couple the suspension? The electronic instruction manual has you covered. The collaboration dates back to 1964, when Enzo Ferrari himself teamed up with company founder Umberto Zanasi - the rest, as they say, is history. And as you can tell from the video after the jump, Zanasi's facility is a touch more impressive than your average panel-beater wielding his rubber hammer in some greasy garage.

Earlier this month, we mentioned that Ferrari was getting ready to release an online simulator. It's time for Scuderia fans to brush up on their virtual F1 skills, because the Ferrari Virtual Academy is now available for download. The racing sim took 12,000 hours to develop and utilized the input of Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella.

The first course available for purchase is the Fiorano circuit. It costs €14.90 (about $18.97 USD) and allows players from around the globe to compete against each other in Ferrari F10 Formula One race cars. Lap times are already up on the Ferrari Virtual Academy website and the competition will continue to heat up as more tracks are released. Next up is Mugello, and then players will get their shot at taming the Nürburgring. The two extra tracks will run €9.90 (about $12.60 USD) each, with all three tracks painstakingly reproduced down to the tiniest details.

All drivers will be able to record and post their lap times as part of an international competition and each week, Ferrari will send out prizes for the top times. At the end of the competition, the five fastest drivers will win a trip to Maranello and take part in a Ferrari Driver Academy course.

Time to stretch those gaming thumbs and take on the world.

A few weeks ago, Ferrari officially debuted its latest Challenge race car, based on the 458 Italia. Now they've released new photos of the car during its test session at the Vallelunga race circuit. Factory test drivers Maurizio Mediani and Jaime Melo were on hand to provide feedback on the 458 Challenge, and predictably, both seem impressed with the car's capabilities. Mediani described his drive as "very quick and extremely good fun," while his counterpart commented, "I am sure that Prancing Horse competition owners will be very pleased with the car."

Using the standard roadgoing 458 Italia as a base, Ferrari creates the Challenge version by increasing output of the 4.5-liter V8 to 570 horsepower, cutting weight via thinner and lighter body panels, adding a race-specific suspension setup, fitting 19-inch BBS wheels with Pirelli racing slicks, installing a set of carbon ceramic Brembo brakes and more.

So equipped, Ferrari claims the 458 Challenge can lap Fiorano over two seconds per lap quicker than its predecessor, the F430 Challenge, while pulling a cornea-yanking 1.6g's worth of lateral acceleration. The folks in Maranello unleashed it's king Horse to the public earlier this week before its official unveiling next month at the Beijing Motor Show, with the promise to build precisely 599 examples carrying the venerable GTO designation. The good news is Ferrari created a vehicle configurator that lets you customize your 599 GTO to your heart's content. The bad news: at an estimated $460,000, most of us couldn't afford it.

But still, it's fun to dream, and with the hundreds of available combinations you'll have plenty of time to play. Hues for the 50s and 60s are available, along with metallic finishes, and you can choose your own seat type (racing buckets come in small, medium and large), steering wheel type, a host of available carbon fiber accents, over a dozen different interior stitching options and plenty more. So let's say you've got yourself a Ferrari F50, and it just doesn't quite have the exhaust-flame-to-throttle ratio you'd hoped for. Never fear! A company by the name of Tubi will be more than happy to provide you with a set of pipes that will not only give your winged stallion a proper bark, but also allow that 4.7-liter V12 to spit fire like the good lord intended.

According to Tubi, the company is practically kissing cousins with Ferrari itself. The exhaust manufacturer has its headquarters located in none other than Maranello, and has been cranking out tubes for Lamborghini, Ferrari and Maserati since 1987. If you're thinking the throaty F50 in the video after the jump sounds quite a bit like the Prancing Horse's Formula One racers of old, you're not too far off. Make-believe Ferrari 458XX

Ferrari has stumbled upon one heck of a formula with its XX development programs. They've found that their most wealthy clients aren't just willing to help Maranello develop new components for future supercars, they're actually willing to pay for the privilege. And pay big, too - as in $2 million big.

The program started with the Enzo-based FXX, evolved with the FXX Evoluzione, and carries on with the Fiorano-based 599XX. So what's next up Ferrari's sleeve? A 458XX wouldn't be too far off the mark.

If the outgoing lineup (and those that came before) can serve as any indication, the new mid-engined V8 sports car is poised to spawn numerous variations, including the requisite Spider, a new Challenge-spec racer, a replacement for the existing F430 GT2, a stripped-down successor to the 360 CS and 430 Scuderia, and, if this speculative rendering from Luxury4Play has its way, a 458XX as well. If and when it does come along, we'd expect it to look something along these lines - which is to say, "tasty."

Felipe Massa's homecoming - Click above to watch the video after the jump

It doesn't seem like it's been that long, but for Felipe Massa, it must feel like it's been an eternity since he's been up to speed. The Brazilian Formula One driver hasn't been at work since July when he suffered a major blow to the head from some flying debris at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

A lot has happened since then: his mentor and former team-mate Michael Schumacher prepared for a comeback and then had to cancel it due to health concerns of his own, the Scuderia promoted test driver Luca Badoer for a couple of races before sending him home, and then Maranello hired Giancarlo Fisichella to fill in and stay on as a reserve driver for the future. Then they picked up Fernando Alonso to be Massa's wingman next year, and somewhere in the middle of it all, Ferrari launched its first all-new mid-engine production car in a decade. (Not to mention the new engine chief they hired, the senior executive they lost or the new designer who is said to be taking over).

Now, after his prolonged absence, Massa has returned home to Maranello for the first time since the crash. He got some practice time in the simulator before hitting the track in a privately-owned, retired F2007 with GP2 tires to reacquaint himself with his craft. And while he was at it, he stopped by the production line to check out the new 458 Italia.
