Louis Filipe de Sousa Carreira fatal Macau GP accident

Phillip Yau Wing-Choi, a touring car driver competing in the Macau Grand Prix, died on Friday after his Chevrolet Cruze race car collided with a barrier and caught fire. Track workers cut open the vehicle to pull the Hong Kong native from the wreckage before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was declared dead 27 minutes after arrival.

The incident marked the second fatal crash at the circuit in just two days, notes Sports Illustrated. Portuguese motorcycle rider Louis Filipe de Sousa Carreira died during qualifying for his event on Thursday.

Despite the tragedies, organizers are defending the course's safety, saying the track has been as it is now for the past 60 years. The Macau GP includes Formula 3, World Touring Car Championship, motorcycle and other events, and holds the honor of being the world's only street circuit to host both motorcycles and cars. The Macau government will reportedly cover all costs related to the deaths.
