Here we have Autocar making an unforeseen comparison: the Nissan GT-R against the Alpina B6 at Brands Hatch and on public roads. Steve Sutcliffe clobbers the circuit in the 3,828-pound, all-wheel-drive sports car, then sees how well the 4,114-pound, rear-wheel drive grand tourer does against it.

Sutcliffe says there are quite a few similarities between the two cars, but that's really only on the spec sheet. The Nissan's got two turbos attached to its 3.8-liter V6, 542 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The Alpina's got two turbos attached to its 4.4-liter V8, 532 hp and 528 lb-ft. But one's brief is to be a monster on the track, the other on the boulevard, and if there's anything the video demonstrates, it's each car's focus.

The results are lopsided, and so is the way the winner was chosen. Sutcliffe's still fun to watch, though, and you'll find him in action in the video below.

Continue reading 2013 Nissan GT-R and 2013 Alpina B6 mix it up on track and street

2013 Nissan GT-R and 2013 Alpina B6 mix it up on track and street originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 May 2013 19:59:00 EST.
In what must have looked and sounded to motorists on the M6 like an invasion of The Swarm, a parade of 50 enthusiast gems leaving a charity event were caught shooting down the on-ramp and merging into traffic. There were plenty of Porsches joining the 959 and Ducktail above, Aston Martins going back to the badboy V8 of the last millennium, a Ferrari Testarossa, a TVR and numerous other Easter eggs.

There were not, however, plenty of turn signals, with someone counting just five among the fifty engaging in proper use of the blinker. One reason put forth for that is the same reason we're posting this video, which is from last Summer, below: "because supercar." Enjoy.
Continue reading Supercar parade entering highway is mesmerizing

Supercar parade entering highway is mesmerizing originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 May 2013 12:43:00 EST.
According to Car and Driver, citing a report in BMW Blog, BMW will be offering performance upgrades - likely called the Competition package - for its M5 and M6 models (including the convertible and Gran Coupe versions of the M6). Both cars will continue to be offered with the normal 560-horsepower, 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engines, but this new performance pack is expected to add an additional 15 hp to the mix.

No need to worry, however - the upgrades won't simply be limited to a small boost in power. These M5 and M6 models will reportedly get new wheels, black exhaust tips, a more direct steering ratio and reworked suspension geometry which will provide better overall handling. Top speed is said to remain governed at 190 miles per hour, but that these extra improvements will shave one-tenth of a second off the cars' 0-60 times.

No pricing information has been revealed as of this writing, though we imagine it'll likely come at a substantial cost over the current starting prices of the M5 and M6 ($90,200 and $108,350, respectively).
BMW readying competition pack for M5, M6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Apr 2013 09:29:00 EST.
BMW has announced updates to the 6 Series lineup today, including a special "Frozen" edition of the convertible, and a 640i Gran Coupe in all-wheel-drive trim.

The 2014 BMW 6 Series Convertible Frozen Brilliant White Edition (catchy name, right?) will be available from select BMW dealers this May, and will offer buyers the signature paint, Frozen Black mirror caps, a black grille and uniquely designed, 20-inch M Performance wheels. Just 100 examples of the FBWE 6er will be produced, with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars in the mix, for starting prices of $106,995 and $110,095, respectively (both prices include $895 in destination and handling charges).

BMW has also informed us that all of its 6 Series Gran Coupe models will now be available with the company's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. No pricing has been given for the xDrive versions of the car as of yet.

Finally, traditionalist Bimmerphiles will be happy to hear that the automaker is now offering six-speed manual transmissions for all flavors of its M6. The M6 Coupe, Gran Coupe and Convertible will all have a no-cost optional 6MT with rev-matching downshifts. Continue on below for BMW's full press release about the 6 Series and M6 updates for 2014.
Continue reading 2014 BMW 6 Series gets Frozen Brilliant White convertible, manual option for M6

2014 BMW 6 Series gets Frozen Brilliant White convertible, manual option for M6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Mar 2013 18:00:00 EST.
If you're anything like us, the first half of that headline made you smile. The BMW 1 Series M Coupe was, without a doubt, one of our favorite cars from the past few years, and according to a BMW Blog interview, Dr. Friedrich Nitschke, head of the company's M division, has confirmed that a successor is in the works.

"We haven't made a decision yet, but the 1M coupe was so successful, that in my opinion, I am absolutely sure we will build a successor," Nitschke told BMW Blog. Currently, BMW only offers the M135i version of the new 1 Series hatch in Europe, which Nitschke says is "not a pure M car."

Moving elsewhere in the M range, BMW Blog asked about the M6 Gran Coupe that recently debuted at this year's Detroit Auto Show. The obvious competitors for this car will be higher-power versions of the Porsche Panamera and Audi RS7, but while both of those offer all-wheel drive, the M6 only sends power to its rear wheels.

"We will not bring an all-wheel drive, only a rear-wheel drive," Nitschke said in the interview. The main reason is that adding AWD means additional weight has to be tacked on, and even so, the BMW executives said that the car was developed to have specific handling and steering characteristics common to a rear-wheel-drive car. "I think it's perfect the way it is," Nitschke stated.
BMW says yes to 1 Series M successor, no to M6 Gran Coupe with xDrive originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Mar 2013 09:58:00 EST.
We've known about the ins and outs of the lovely BMW M6 Gran Coupe for a while now, but that doesn't mean we weren't happy to see the thing in the metal for the first time, here in Detroit.

The M-tuned Gran Coupe utilizes the same 4.4-liter forced-induction V8 that powers both the BMW M6 and the M5, with an output of 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. The fast four-door brings up 60 miles per hour in just 4.1-seconds - the same sprint time as the M6 coupe and a few tenths quicker than the M5 - and up to a limited top speed of 155 mph.

We love those performance figures - this is one new Bimmer that we're amped to get some seat time in - though we're not super crazy about the selection of chrome wheels on this particular show car. Tells us what you think about the hotted up Gran Coupe in comments, below.
2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe is ready for your favorite roads originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 14 Jan 2013 17:23:00 EST.
Risden Engineering is a bit of an unknown, if we're being completely honest - we have yet to report on the company to date, and its corporate website is really an information desert save for the name and a few email addresses. Even the press release that we requested from Risden's contact person is short and vague. That's all pretty much okay with us as long as the shadowy tuners, you know, make good on this sweet-looking BMW M6 racecar thing.

Dubbed the Risden 6R, we're told that the M6 modification will result in a vehicle that is more adept at track work, while still being street-legal. In terms of specifics, we read that a full aero kit will be involved, with one fixed and one retractable rear wing (hard to miss). There are obviously new wheels, and the company has also added a fully adjustable suspension, a four-point roll bar and a new braking system - all while reducing curb weight overall.

Apparently more details are to follow after the 6R's official release in the first quarter of 2013. We wait with bated breath.
Continue reading BMW M6 amped up for track duty by Risden

BMW M6 amped up for track duty by Risden originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 22 Dec 2012 13:01:00 EST.

The new BMW M6, and to an even greater extent this M6 Convertible, often causes automotive apoplexy in your typical armchair motoring enthusiast. That's because as soon as the M badge is applied to any BMW, all sorts of expectations are heaped upon it. Mostly those entail remembering what we, collectively, loved about the E30 M3, the E28 M5 and to a lesser extent, the E24 M6. Then cue bemoaning the added weight, complexity and unasked-for modernity of the new M.

Of course, those perceived infractions are all tantamount to treason for lovers of BMW history, but they're also critical elements of building a new, safe, stunningly competent luxury car that real buyers in the segment will take seriously. And the really good news is that, despite the sheer bulk, turbocharged engines, the continued existence of iDrive and a lack of manual transmissions, cars like this 2012 M6 Convertible are - shock, horror - far better overall than their storied precursors.

Let us immediately jump into defending that last statement, lest we be pilloried into early retirement by our razor-tongued commentariat. There are two real missions for this M6 droptop: go really, really fast, and make your driver look and feel like a million bucks. The convertible even more than the coupe, is meant to be a special-occasion car; where the occasion in question is a grand touring road trip more often than a day at the track, for instance. On these fronts, the 2012 version of the M car is far better off than was its ancestor, which was objectively slower and less richly appointed.
Continue reading 2012 BMW M6 Convertible

2012 BMW M6 Convertible originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Dec 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Considering that we've pretty much known for some time what the 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe will look like, thanks to numerous spy shots, spy video and even some shadowy images direct from BMW, the official reveal of this car was a bit anticlimactic. But it's never hard to get excited about a new M-branded BMW product. Positioned smack dab in the middle of the M6 Coupe and the M5, the new M6 Gran Coupe will fill yet another small niche in the BMW lineup when it goes on sale next summer to take on the Audi S7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS63.

Like the M5 and M6 models, power in the M6 GC comes from a direct-injected 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that lays down an impressive 560 horsepower and offers up peak torque of 500 pound-feet that kicks in at just 1,500 rpm and last up to 5,750 revs. This power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an exclusive electronically controlled Active M Differential for optimal traction. In all, BMW says M6 GC has a top speed of 155 miles per hour to go with a 0-60 mph time of just 4.1 seconds. As expected, the brakes have also been upgraded with massive rotors front and rear (measuring 15.7 and 15.6 inches, respectively) and six-piston calipers. For better customization, the driver can choose from M1 or M2 modes by using the steering wheel-mounted buttons; M1 delivers a sportier setup and M2 is for track duty.

Visually, the car's coupe-like profile has been accented by all of the usual upgrades we'd expect from a BMW M car including a more aggressive body kit, exposed carbon fiber roof panel, painted brake calipers and stylish 20-inch wheels wrapped in ultra-high-performance summer tires. Inside, the M6 Gran Coupe will get similar upgrades as its two-door counterpart with plenty of Alcantara trim, a sportier, three-spoke steering wheel and well-bolstered, leather-wrapped seats.

Matt Mullins has done everything from stunts in movies to driving with the United States secret service, but the BMW Performance Driving School chief instructor has never done this before. "This" in this case is creating postcards using a BMW M6 as the printing press.

A pressurized ink system was mounted in the trunk, which spayed ink up at the rear tires. It was controlled via a switch in the cabin of the turbocharged BMW coupe. Mullin then took the M6 out onto the track at Blackhawk Farms Raceway, where pieces of paper were placed in straight lines. Matt just had to spray the ink and drive over the paper, but keeping a high-powered machine such as the M6 in a perfectly straight line is still a little challenging. You'll just have to check out the video to see how he did.

When it was all over, the results of this little experiment were cut up into one-of-a-kind postcards, which BMW is sending out to M enthusiasts across the country. Sure you could create another BMW art car, or use the rear tires to do your best Jackson Pollock, but this way a great many fans will get to own a piece of yet another great intersection of BMW life and the art world.
Continue reading How to make art prints with your BMW M6

How to make art prints with your BMW M6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Nov 2012 19:58:00 EST.
When it comes to the M version of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, we've already seen spy photos and video of the car testing, but we've yet to see any shots of it in production trim until now. The new M6 Gran Coupe has done plenty of testing on the Nürburgring, but Car Magazine snapped a picture of the car sitting idle at the 'Ring, which was reportedly on hand for a BMW event.

Differing from the 640i Gran Coupe, this new four-door M6 looks to have the same aggressive body kit as its coupe counterpart, including the massive front air intakes and vented front fenders. The M6 GC does appear to be getting a unique design for the 20-inch wheels not currently available on other M6 models. Also like the recently released M6, key differences inside the M6 Gran Coupe include an M-exclusive steering wheel that has been completely redesigned from the 640i Gran Coupe and gets the signature red and blue stitching, a different shifter and bezel for the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission ,and we can also see that this M6 will be equipped with the Auto Stop-Start feature.

Keeping with the M6 similarities, power will almost certainly come from BMW's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that is currently rated at 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. No word yet on pricing, but like the 640i Gran Coupe, the M6 Gran Coupe will likely be positioned between the M6 Coupe ($106,100) and M6 Convertible ($113,100). BMWBlog says that the M6 Gran Coupe will make its big debut in January at the Detroit Auto Show before going on sale next summer. To see full shots of the undisguised M6 Gran Coupe, head on over to Car Magazine.
BMW M6 Gran Coupe caught ahead of official debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Nov 2012 10:00:00 EST.
Catastrophic engine failure... not exactly what you want to hear no matter what you're driving, but especially so when you've just purchased a brand-new 2013 BMW M5 or M6.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "a manufacturing process error" could cause the oil pump's driveshaft to separate from its rotor, leading "to a sudden loss of oil pressure causing the possibility of complete engine failure, resulting in an engine stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash."

As is always the case with such recalls, BMW will be contacting owners and dealerships with plans to fix the problem free of charge. On the plus side, we'd imagine some owners already know of the problem, considering the brand issued a stop sale notice on the M5 and M6 on September 21.

In kinda-sorta related news (hey, Mini is owned by BMW after all), a recall notice has also been issued for certain 2011 Mini Clubman and Clubman S models regarding a glitch that may cause owners to miss an in-dash warning for malfunctioning ABS brakes. Not exactly catastrophic engine failure, and it only affects 75 cars, says NHTSA, but you can find both recalls in their entirety below.
Continue reading BMW recalling 2013 M5, M6 models over potential catastrophic engine failures

BMW recalling 2013 M5, M6 models over potential catastrophic engine failures originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 13:45:00 EST.
According to the M-obsessed boys and girls at M5Post.com, BMW has issued an immediate stop sale on new M5 and M6 (both coupe and convertible) models. The problem stems from the engine oil pump; if the pump doesn't supply the correct amount of oil to the engine's moving parts, "severe engine damage" is the likely result. That's not good at all.

BMW is also "contacting customers that have already taken delivery and recommending customers not drive their cars." Sad news for M5 and M6 owners, to be sure, but we think it beats a bunch of blown engines. Check out the official bulletin above and be sure to contact your local dealer if you happen to be lucky enough to own one of the possibly affected machines.
BMW issues stop sale on M5 and M6 models over faulty oil pump originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 18:29:00 EST.
For those of you looking to snag a brand-new BMW M5 or M6, good news has arrived. The German super sedan and two-door have finally rolled in to U.S. dealerships. (Given how long we've been talking about these cars, you could be forgiven for thinking they've been on sale in the States for ages.)

The M6 coupe and M5 sedan join the M6 convertible, which has been on sale since July. Regardless of which model you choose, the new M cars share the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. According to BMW, 560 horsepower is the peak output, and it's sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Oh, and the M5 offers a six-speed stick as a no-cost option in the States. Tempting, no?
Continue reading BMW says M5 sedan, M6 Coupe finally in U.S. showrooms

BMW says M5 sedan, M6 Coupe finally in U.S. showrooms originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 02 Sep 2012 18:01:00 EST.
The pageant of global automotive finery that is Pebble Beach weekend is under way, and among the many automakers with big plans is BMW. Its prize pony will be the unveiling of the BMW Zagato concept (click the photo above to enlarge) - a different BMW-Zagato collaboration than what was revealed at Villa d'Este earlier this year (see gallery below). This one to be debuted at Pebble Beach has familiar lines, but is a roadster.

Elsewhere on the lawns of Pebble, the 2013 7 Series and Alpina B7 will plant their tires on American soil for the first time and get the 650i Gran Coupe, M5 and M6 for a cheering section. Beyond the grass, a 1986 BMW-March GTP, 1980 BMW M1 Procar and 1975 BMW 3.5 CSL will be heating up the asphalt at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, and the 40th anniversary of the M division will be one of the subplots at Legends of the Autobahn.

With the dust just settling on recent tests of the $113,995 BMW M6 convertible and the start of U.S. deliveries in late May, we now get to attack some traffic-free Spanish two-lanes and the 3.4-mile track at the Ascari Race Resort in the third-generation, or F12, BMW M6 coupe, which sells for the "discount" price of just $106,995.

Let's cut to the chase a bit: The M6 coupe is far more convincing as a big M car with this bi-turbo V8 powertrain than either the M6 convertible or M5 four-door.

Of these three 553-horsepower platform-sharing M cars, it's definitely this sleek coupe that takes home the prize on dynamics. It's some 65 pounds lighter than the M5 and almost 290 pounds lighter than the convertible M6, so just on those numbers, one would certainly hope for a crisper, more responsive road and track manner.

Almost as a way of driving home this chief difference between the intentions of the coupe and convertible, BMW dressed all of the M6 coupes we were testing in both the optional five-spoke 20-inch forged M wheels and big lightweight optional carbon ceramic brake discs. The convertibles on hand at this European drive event all had standard 19-inchers and compound discs. And thus the drop tops were not allowed on the track at all, and that felt right.

2013 BMW M6 Coupe [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Jun 2012 11:57:00 EST.
There is something very right about a rear-wheel-drive sports sedan with over 500 horsepower and a manual transmission, and yet few vehicles check those boxes quite like the BMW M5. Unfortunately, most M5 buyers prefer to leave their left foot out of the gear-shifting equation, which is leading BMW to lose the manual tranny option altogether in favor of a dual-clutch-only approach.

Inside Line reports that the next M5, and the M6 for that matter, will not feature a manual transmission option. BMW M-brand Engineering chief Albert Biermann reportedly told IL that manual-equipped M5 models are topping out at 15 percent of total sales, making the MT a money-loser for the brand. Biermann claims that the volume of manual transmission buyers makes it all but impossible to make another three-pedal M5, adding "nobody wants it in Europe or anywhere else, so this will be the last time we do it."

This is most definitely not good news for stick shift-loving enthusiasts, but at the same time we can hardly argue against Biermann's point. There's no sense in offering a no-charge manual option if the vast majority of buyers don't want it. Fortunately, the M3 doesn't suffer from the same problem, so the M5's baby brother will continue to offer a row-your-own option.
Next BMW M5 to drop manual transmission option originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Jun 2012 13:58:00 EST.
It takes a fast and agile car to keep pace with MotoGP racing bikes. Fortunately the BMW M division is up to the task, providing safety cars (or what we'd call pace cars on this side of the Atlantic) to the race organizers of the top-level motorcycle racing series.

The most recent vehicles to perform the duties have been the 1 Series M Coupe and the X6 M crossover, but now BMW is introducing a the new M6 coupe to the mix. It'll debut in safety car guise as pictured above at the Nürburgring this weekend.

While it's unclear whether any modifications have been made to the 552-horsepower twin-turbo V8, the M6 MotoGP safety car has been upgraded with new spoilers front and rear, special lighting equipment and BMW's traditional blue, blue and red striping on a white body. And if we were betting men, we'd put our money on some upgrades to the brakes, suspension and tires, too.
BMW rolls out new M6 safety car for MotoGP originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 19 May 2012 18:03:00 EST.
When we think of the BMW M division, the 1978 M1 comes instantly to mind, followed by the E30 M3 and then the 2001-2002 M Coupe. But the company's in-house hot rod shop actually dates back to 1972, when it was formed as a subsidiary to manage the company's racing operations, dubbed BMW Motorsport.

It was this month 40 years ago that what is known today as BMW M GmbH was launched. So to celebrate its anniversary, BMW has offloaded some 50 lustworthy images celebrating that performance history. See them all in our gallery.
Pics Aplenty: BMW celebrates 40 years of M originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 May 2012 19:29:00 EST.
