While Google and Audi explore the possibilities of autonomous vehicles, Toyota and its Lexus division are studying the intermediate step of vehicles equipped with a deep suite of technology that help drivers make the best decisions. Introduced at this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Lexus advanced safety research vehicle is an LS sedan fitted with three high-def color cameras to detect objects up to almost 500 feet away, 360-degree Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) lasers that can detect objects up to 220 feet away, three radar units to keep track of other vehicles at intersections, a precision odometer on the rear wheel, GPS that estimates orientation and an accelerometer.

Currently testing at a purpose-built 8.6 acre urban testing ground at the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Susono, Japan the Toyota research vehicle is being used to study how to make better drivers, as well as figuring out how to reduce crashes as the industry's journey through passive and active safety systems progresses. In the event of a crash, new rescue systems are also being tested.

Further investment is being put into the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) that would use shortwave signals to harness information from the car and from other vehicles on the road, as well as roadside infrastructure and even pedestrians. Toyota reasons it could then build a picture of interactions and, for instance, alert the driver to a potential collision at a blind intersection.

Toyota's says its research "could lead to a fully autonomous car in the future," but for now, the point is that "a driverless car is just a part of the story. Our vision is a car equipped with an intelligent, always-attentive co-pilot whose skills contribute to safer driving." Improving driver education in this country would probably be a lot cheaper, but hey, we're for anything that helps make the roads safer places to be. There's plenty more tech-speak in the video and press release below.
Continue reading Toyota and Lexus show off advanced safety research vehicle [w/video]

Toyota and Lexus show off advanced safety research vehicle [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Jan 2013 18:00:00 EST.
Toyota Motorsports GmbH has finally unveiled the super sedan it has been working on, and its official name is the TMG Sports 650. Why 650? Because this Lexus LS-based road rocket generates 650 PS, or about 641 horsepower, from its twin-turbo 5.0L V8 engine that's mated to an eight-speed transmission capable of handling all that force.

We don't know much more than that, as TMG unveiled the scooped, vented and flared body of the Sports 650 on its Facebook page, and while the company provided pics aplenty, details about the car like specs, pricing and availability are still absent. The Facebook post does tell us that the Sport 650's aerodynamics were developed in TMG's wind tunnels and that significant development has been dedicated to its handling, which we already knew based on the number of times prototypes were caught testing on Germany's Nürburgring.

Last we heard, the TMG Sport 650 will be making its official in-person debut at the Essen Motor Show in December. At that time, we might see TMG take one big step closer to becoming the factory performance tuning arm of Toyota, just like AMG is to Mercedes-Benz. Lexus could do a lot worse, with TMG having been the brains and brawn behind the company's last effort in Formula One, as well as its latest push to challenge Audi in Le Mans racing with the hybrid TS303 LMP1 car.
LS With An Attitude: Toyota Motorsports unleashes Sports 650 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Nov 2012 10:11:00 EST.
If the newly improved 2013 Lexus LS is aimed at taking on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, then it sounds like Lexus might have a new model in mind to take on the monstrous S65 AMG. Motor Authority has images of what it claims to be a wind tunnel prototype for a souped-up LS we first saw testing on the Nürburgring a couple years ago. We already knew this car was being developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) which could become a factory tuner arm for Toyota like AMG, and the report says that the car will make its debut at the Essen Motor Show in December.

The car that will be called the TMG Lexus LS 650, but for now, it's only a "feasibility study" designed to gauge interest from customers and the media. We were already interested looking at the widebody version of the LS with massive front air intakes and hood vents, but the article in Motor Authority got our ears perked up a little more with vehicle specs that include a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 laying down more than 600 horsepower giving the big bruiser a top speed near 200 miles per hour.
Lexus LS 650 TMG prototype headed for Essen originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Nov 2012 11:30:00 EST.
When it comes to rear-drive, V8 performance sedans, few do it like HSV. Australia's Holden Special Vehicles makes a high-horsepower hoon-happy saloon called GTS (known elsewhere as the Vauxhall VXR8) based on the Holden Commodore. With General Motors LS V8 power under the bonnet, the GTS makes us pine for the days of the Pontiac G8 GXP and hopeful for the outlook of the forthcoming Chevrolet SS.

Despite tough economic times, HSV is thriving, and to commemorate 25 years of this official Holden tuning partner, it has released this new 25th Anniversary GTS. The special edition comes equipped with the same 435-horsepower LS3 found in the standard GTS, but adds 20-inch forged alloy wheels with Satin Graphite finish. The 25th Anniversary GTS also receives unique 'Vector' hood scoops and side vents for better breathing and a bit more visual intimidation.

The anniversary model also comes with all of the standard kit found in the GTS, including magnetic ride control suspension, navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, blind-spot monitoring, and a bi-mode exhaust. The GTS also comes with an Enhanced Driver Interface (EDI) system. Much like that found in the Nissan GT-R, EDI is an advanced performance data recorder that provides the driver with information on lap times, G-forces, power and torque.

Interestingly enough, this GTS is also available with optional Liquid Propane Injection to curb running costs. As the name suggests, this system injects liquid propane under certain driving situations. The ECU can switch seamlessly between propane and conventional gasoline, going to full-gas under hard acceleration.

No word on pricing, but production numbers have been limited to 140 vehicles; 125 in Australia, and 15 in New Zealand.
Continue reading HSV celebrates quarter-century of smoking tires with 25th Anniversary GTS

HSV celebrates quarter-century of smoking tires with 25th Anniversary GTS originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 13:29:00 EST. Lexus has announced its intentions to showcase a brand-new concept car at the rapidly approaching Paris Motor Show on September 27, 2012. No, that's not terribly long to wait, but the automaker promises to release "information and pictures of the new vehicle" ten days before its world debut.

We really don't know what the new concept will be, but we wouldn't be surprised to see a conceptual version of the next IS sedan or possibly another stylish hybrid performance coupe. We'll just have to wait and see.

Though not quite as intriguing, Lexus also says it will be showing the new LS 600h F Sport in Paris. It'll most likely look exactly like the LS 460 F Sport, except with blue hybrid badges. Lexus says this will be "the model's first appearance in western Europe." The very brief press release can be found below.
Continue reading Lexus to premiere concept car at Paris Motor Show

Lexus to premiere concept car at Paris Motor Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 19:20:00 EST.
In 1990, Nissan and Toyota both entered the luxury market with two new brands, each boasting a flagship premium full-size sedan. The Infiniti Q45 was aimed at the enthusiast with a powerful V8, limited-slip differential and a multi-link suspension. The Lexus LS 400, on the other hand, was all about luxury. The automaker surrounded its buttery-smooth V8 with aerodynamic (if banal) bodywork and lined its cabin with premium leather and fine wood.

Thanks to a clear message, a strong advertising campaign and a product solid enough to back both, Lexus sold more than 40,000 units that first year. Infiniti, in sharp contrast, was never able to capture the same momentum. By 1995, Lexus had introduced an all-new second-generation LS, followed by an all-new third-generation model six years later - and each introduction only served to drive the nails deeper into the Q45's coffin. By the time the fourth-generation LS arrived in 2007, the Infiniti Q45 was gone, and Infiniti nearly with it.

The Lexus LS continued to develop. What was originally a rear-wheel-drive sedan evolved into a model range of rear- and all-wheel-drive sedans, short- and long-wheelbase, with a choice of gasoline or hybrid drivetrains. The automaker's flagship continued to lead with technological innovation and unsurpassed luxury - but it still lacked a sporty quotient, a model seemingly necessary to run head-to-head with the Europeans.

All that will change in 2013. After a minor update in 2010, Lexus has unveiled a significant refresh for the new model year that encompasses all seven models in the lineup. But most importantly, the LS range now includes its first-ever performance-oriented model, the F Sport.
Continue reading 2013 Lexus LS [w/video]

2013 Lexus LS [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Aug 2012 11:57:00 EST.
It's been leak city for the 2013 Lexus LS line, allowing us to catch the exteriors of the LS 460 L and LS 460 F Sport from practically every angle. The spindle grille might be the most prominent story of the refreshed LS - otherwise there are no monumental changes to the body, but plenty of details did decide to wait for the Lexus luxury flagship's official unveiling in San Francisco.

As we've stated, there are now four flavors of LS from which to choose: the LS 460, LS 460 L, LS 460 F Sport in either or rear- or all-wheel drive and the AWD LS 600hL hybrid. All of them are more rigid thanks to additional body reinforcements and laser screw welding.

Inside, a 12.3-inch nav screen with split-screen capability immediately gets the eye's attention, and surrounding it is something we've not yet encountered in the LS: what Lexus calls "a driver-focused interior." The Remote Touch system places the 'mouse' controller next to the shift level, and in conjunction with steering-wheel controls can operate many of the car's features, and up to five driving modes are possible if buyers choose the optional air suspension. Shock absorbers have been redesigned to improve pitch and bounce control, the variable ratio steering is said to improve accuracy and turn-in and the brakes have been adjusted to provide better power and pedal feel.

Passengers haven't been left out of the pampering, with the Lexus Climate Concierge controlling the ambient temperature, seat temperature and steering wheel temperature to comfort each occupant individually. Safety gets a boost with an available new Blind Spot Monitor, in operation from 10 mph and part of a system that can detect crossing traffic behind the car when reversing out of a spot. Convenience takes a step up with redesigned seats, more sound insulation "for an even quieter cabin," which we weren't sure was even possible, noise-reducing wheels, and an optional Ottoman Seating Package with Shiatsu Massage, because, well, why not.

The LS 460 F Sport is the halo range topper meant to give the whole line some additional cachet. Its F Sport tweaks outside and underneath include being lowered by almost half an inch, a sport-minded tune for the air suspension, 19-inch forged wheels hiding Brembo six-pot calipers up front, and a Torsen limited-slip differential on the RWD model. Inside it gets heavily bolstered seats, paddle shifters and aluminum trim.

While we're waiting for official pricing, there are more details in the press release below and three galleries with high-res views of every nook and cranny.
Continue reading 2013 Lexus LS 460 goes more intense, more sporty and more luxurious

2013 Lexus LS 460 goes more intense, more sporty and more luxurious originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Jul 2012 09:12:00 EST.
Lexus planned on waiting until July 30 to completely reveal the 2013 LS460 F Sport, but the Internet laughs at PR calendars. So Lexus' latest flagship has had its mug leaked three days in a row. (First here, then officially here, and don't forget earlier spy shots from a Korean website showing the car in the metal) Today's round of leaked images details every inch of hard-edged charm the updated big Lexus brings to the party.

We aren't sure what changes are in store for the interior, but since this is a refresh, expect revisions in detail as opposed to an overhaul. A keen-eyed member of the Club Lexus forum discovered one possible alteration: an immense nav screen of perhaps 12 or 14 inches. With just one day to go, perhaps that story will actually wait for tomorrow's official unveiling, along with the other LS trim levels.
2013 Lexus LS 460 F Sport images flood the web originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 29 Jul 2012 12:01:00 EST.
Ladies and gentlemen, your 2013 Lexus LS 460 F Sport has arrived. Lexus won't be officially unwrapping its new flagship until next Monday, July 30, but the automaker has decided to reveal this single image of the car early via its Facebook page.

Surprised about the new sedan's design? Neither are we. Lexus' new design language is fully present here on the LS, complete with the large spindle grille found on, well, nearly every other model in its lineup. We'll be interested to see what the standard LS models look like without the trim-and-tape F Sport up-do.

Lexus will continue to offer its big sedan in LS 460, LS 460 L and LS 600h L guises, as well as the more athletic looking F Sport model you see here. We'll have the full details on Monday, so stay tuned.
2013 Lexus LS 460 F Sport gets early Facebook reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 13:42:00 EST.
Lexus is poised to whip the sheets off of the newest interpretation of its LS line in San Francisco next week, but a Chinese website is claiming to have an early peek at the machine. The site showed off two images detailing the majority of the exterior changes, including a new spindle grille and bizarre headlamp arrays with what looks to be three projector lenses per side. Word has it what we see here is the new LS 460 F Sport, complete with more aggressive bodywork. Around back, the images show new taillamps and little else.

We reached out to Lexus to see if the images were accurate or not, but have yet to hear back. Either way, we'll find out just how close this sedan is to the real deal when the 2013 Lexus LS debuts next Monday. The company has already said buyers will be able to pick up their luxury sedan in base LS 460, LS 460 L and LS 600h L guise, in addition to the new F Sport model. Stay tuned.
Are you the 2013 Lexus LS? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Jul 2012 13:30:00 EST.
Guess what, folks? It's teaser time again!

This time, it's the 2013 Lexus LS sedan that's being given the painfully slow reveal treatment on Facebook. We know that the next LS will get its official debut on Monday, July 30, which means there's 11 more days of potential teasing to go. Strap in.

Judging from the smoky image above, we can expect a mostly traditional silhouette from the 2013 LS, with perhaps a bit more rake than the outgoing model. We're almost certainly going to see a so-called spindle grille to match the faces of Lexus' other recent models, and we're thinking there may be standard, hybrid and F Sport models on tap.

We tried playing with the teaser photo to eke out more details, but sadly there's not much else to see. That said, feel free to click on the image above for a larger view.
Lexus uses smoke but holds the mirrors for 2013 LS teaser originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Jul 2012 18:30:00 EST. Lexus has announced the automaker will show off its new 2013 LS line in San Francisco on July 30. The shindig will be an invitation-only event, thought the premium automaker isn't serving up too many details beyond the locale and the date. The LS family will eventually be available in a total of four variants, including a racier-looking F Sport model. We're also holding out hope that eventually the much fussed-over LS TMG Edition we've seen racing around the Nürburgring recently will make the scene. Lexus has kept a pretty tight lid on what we can expect from the next-generation LS, though odds are designers will apply the company's new spindle grille to vehicle's fascia.

New headlights with LED daytime running light accents and metal elements will also likely show up. As you may recall, Lexus let slip a glimpse of what could have been the 2013 LS during a presentation back in March. Beyond that, don't be surprised to see the usual battery of improvements in fuel efficiency, power and toys. Take a look at the skimpy press release below.
Continue reading Next Lexus LS to be revealed in San Francisco on July 30

Next Lexus LS to be revealed in San Francisco on July 30 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 15:44:00 EST.
Picking up a used luxury car is a great way to save some coin. Letting the previous owner take the fall on depreciation is a smart move, but it's worth remembering that high-end autos carry with them high-end maintenance and repair costs. Using Edmunds.com data, 24/7 Wall Street has compiled what it says are the 10 most expensive vehicles to own, and the list is populated by some not-so-surprising names. BMW and Mercedes-Benz soak up the lion's share of the offenders, though other manufactures make a showing as well. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG takes top honors as the most expensive of them all with a "true cost of ownership" of $245,469. That's in addition to the gullwing supercar's $210,875 MSRP.

The calculations not only factor in deprecation, but also things like fuel, maintenance and insurance costs.

All told, Mercedes-Benz models takes four of the 10 spots on the list. That's twice as many as BMW, and the rest are split between makes like Land Rover, Audi and Nissan. If that last one seems a bit out of place, keep in mind Nissan makes the mighty (and mighty complex) GT-R. Check out our gallery below for a full list of the biggest offenders.
America, these are your top 10 most expensive cars to own originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 May 2012 13:00:00 EST.
We love four-door convertibles, reciprocating saws and watching other people make bad decisions, so the video seen here is a bit like our perfect YouTube cocktail. In it, the owner of a slammed Lexus LS decides he's had enough of living under the oppressive shadow of his sedan's roof. While at StanceWars Belgium 2012, he decides to fire up a generator, plug in his trusty sawzall and go to town. Not surprisingly, the sheetmetal on the roof gives up quickly, and the whole extraction takes less than eight minutes from start to finish.

We hope you like the look of the new Lexus GS. The Japanese luxury automaker has made it clear it aims to spread the new "spindle" grille found on the sedan across the brand. During an interview with Takayuki Katsuda, chief engineer for the RX line, four teaser images were splashed across the screen, including what looks to be the next-generation LS. If that's true, the model will wear a heavily accented version of the Predator maw, complete with a chrome or brushed metal accent frame. Likewise, the headlamps will boast metal (or metal-effect) trim work of their own, complete with a dual-projector array.

Other reports have indicated the teaser may hint to what buyers can expect to see from the LS 600h F Sport when the model arrives.

In addition to the LS teaser, the video also flashes a brief glimpse at vehicles like the GS 450h, CT 200h F Sport and the upcoming ES. Hit the jump to take a look for yourself.
Continue reading Are you the next Lexus LS?

Are you the next Lexus LS? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Mar 2012 10:44:00 EST.
Lexus has introduced a slew of 2012 special edition models, including unique variants of the LS 460, ES 350 and CT 200h. The rear-wheel-drive Lexus LS 460 Sport Special Edition offers buyers standard equipment that includes Brembo brakes, a sport-tuned air suspension and sport front seats in addition to 19-inch split-10-spoke wheels and a two-tone leather interior, among other amenities. Expect to hand over $77,000, excluding destination.

Meanwhile, the ES 350 Touring Edition comes laden with 17-inch 10-spoke wheels, a steering wheel and shift knob trimmed in leather and wood, navigation and saddle-tan leather heated and cooled seats. Additional equipment is also part of the package, and all that kit will bump the ES 350 Touring Edition MSRP to $40,475, excluding destination.

Finally, the CT 200h is getting the sport treatment as well with the F Sport Special Edition (seen above). The model is equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels of its own, along with an F Sport suspension that includes specific springs and sway bars. An F Sport appearance package is also along for the ride, and includes a mesh grille, larger rear spoiler, aluminum sport pedals and a perforated leather-trimmed steering wheel. Asking price? A cool $37,995. Lexus will politely ask for $875 for delivery on each model. Hit the jump for the press release.
Continue reading Lexus releases new ES, CT and LS special edition models

Lexus releases new ES, CT and LS special edition models originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 15:45:00 EST.
With each passing day, our lives become more intertwined with the latest sporting machine from Lexus. Previously contained only through still photography, the Lexus LS TMG Edition has now been captured by a video camera: The 641-horsepower sport sedan was seen in its native habitat, which is stalking the twists and turns of Germany's Nürburgring.

We are still waiting to learn more about this oddly enticing product born from the Cologne garage of Toyota Motorsport GmbH. So far, all we've got to go on is the leaked spec sheet. That slip of conveniently laid-out paper has us eager to get quite a bit closer to the LS TMG.

Lexus fans are abuzz over the sight of a potential new LS-based super sedan, and details about the mystery machine are leaking out across the intertubes. The folks at AutoGuide have somehow managed to get shots of the Nürburgring-running prototype parked in a garage along witha a conveniently displayed spec sheet which gives us a lot more information about the sporty four door shown testing on the 'Ring.

According to their information it's called the Lexus LS TMG Edition, and the TMG stands for Toyota Motorsport GmbH. That would be the European motorsports branch for the Japanese automaker, which helps to explain the Cologne plates spotted on the car. According to the spied spec sheet, the LS TMG boasts a 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 641 horsepower and 524 pound-feet of torque. That should be enough to push the large luxo rocket from 0-62 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds and on to a top speed that's a hair under 200 miles per hour.

While we have no idea whether this is a production prototype, a one-off exercise or something else entirely, the very existence of a 641-horsepower, 200 mile-per-hour Lexus LS suggests that the crew behind the LFA are holding increasing sway over the Toyota luxury asylum. Needless to say, we're okay with that.
Super Lexus LS has a name (and specs): TMG Edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 13:00:00 EST.
We spy, with the lens of our spy guy, a rather unique Lexus LS that's taken to the track. Spotted lapping Germany's Nürburgring, this particular LS is wearing puffed-out fenders, a strongly styled decklid spoiler, what appears to be a faux nose hiding new bodywork, deep side skirts and a pair of vents on the hood. Something sporty is afoot, and we're itching to know more.

Toyota is clearly testing a super sporty version of its flagship luxury sedan. What's not clear, however, is what exactly is going on underneath the bodywork. We do know that this is work of the automaker, and not an aftermarket tuner testing some new performance parts out. The license tags on the car are from Cologne, and the car was spotted at the automaker's garage nearby.

Could we be staring at a Lexus LS F in disguise? The automaker has hinted in the past at such a car coming to market over the years, and this luxury sedan is certainly wearing some athletic upgrades. Funny, we thought for sure that a variant of the new GS was going to be next in line to get the F Sport treatment. Could this just be a one-off piece for the Tokyo Motor Show or Tokyo Auto Salon, or is it indicative of something more?

Final amusing note: The wheelman at the helm of this mystery "LS F' must be new to the 'Ring - that giant "L" on the rear window indicates he's a Learner.
Mystery super Lexus LS spotting lapping Nürburgring originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 12:32:00 EST. Staffers here at Autoblog have been fortunate enough to drive cars like the Porsche Panamera and Bentley Continental at our weddings, but it takes a very high-ranking person to get an automaker to build a special vehicle just for the knot-tying ceremonies. His Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco is getting married in just over a week, and when he does, Lexus will have this very special LS 600h L Landaulet waiting to handle chauffeur duty.

Yes, it's being called a Landaulet - you know, like the Maybach - but instead of the rear seat passengers being completely alfresco, there's a transparent bubble roof, in this case, one without any reinforcements or pillars. Lexus says that the roof was built by one of the world's leading transparent component-production companies in France. The entire Landaulet conversion was handled by Belgian coachbuilder Carat Duchatelet in close collaboration with Lexus, and it took just over 2,000 hours to complete. Even the Midnight Blue livery paint is a special touch - it was applied manually using several coats of bespoke, water-based paint.
