Test driver crashes Lamborghini Aventador, accosts spy shooter

Being a spy shooter is tough work. It's all about being in the right place at the right time, hoping to train one's lens on a glimpse of verboten sheetmetal. We know from our colleagues that it's hard enough to just catch a blurry glimpse of a distant mule when the quarry doesn't want to be photographed, making this series of photos from our friends at CarPix that much more remarkable.

Not only have they captured a Lamborghini Aventador cold weather testing in the frigid Arctic Circle, their shutters were snapping as the test driver lost control and went sailing through an intersection and into a snowbank, documenting the crash frame-by-frame. Fortunately for all those involved, the snow wasn't packed too hard and both driver and Lamborghini emerged miraculously unscathed.

Apparently not happy with his good fortune, CarPix reports that "the driver then leaped out of the car, nearly falling down in the process, and came at our photographer in a fairly aggressive manner."

Thankfully, the embarrassment and anger was short-lived, as a winch-equipped Audi A6 Allroad came to the rescue. Seeing that his nearly $400,000 test subject was unharmed, the driver apparently cooled off enough to give our man a thumbs up before going on his way.

Lamborghini Aventador Zamboni edition, anyone?

With nearly 700 horsepower and a stunningly angular supercar skin, the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 is one impressive exotic. And speaking of impressive, the resume of Fifth Gear presenter Tiff Needell is nothing to shake a stick at either. Two titans in their respective fields, but do they go great together?

The racecar driver turned Fifth Gear star took the bull by the horns, experiencing the Aventador on the UK's public roads and on the track. The Aventador was strong enough to achieve one very impressive Fifth Gear speed record, but does Tiff love it? About as much as a stiff neck. We at Autoblog love a good supercar battle, and of all the rivalries within the land of the exotic sports car, perhaps none is as fierce as Ferrari versus Lamborghini. And while Ferrari doesn't exactly have a direct competitor for the absolutely bombastic Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, the folks at Underground Racing may have come up with a suitable (and awesome) solution.

The Ferrari 458 Italia you see here isn't just your stock coupe. Underground Racing has fitted the 458 with its Stage One bolt-on twin-turbocharging system, bringing the Italia's output up to a staggering 700 horsepower - at the wheels. Naturally, a race was in order.

Now, we'll go on record right away and say we're shocked that the team decided to do an acceleration race on a public highway, but nevertheless, it's clear that the addition of two turbochargers have indeed helped the Ferrari's performance. Here's your official spoiler alert warning, as the following video is taken from a Top Gear episode that has yet to air on this side of the Atlantic.

Top Gear tests automobiles that are pure dream fuel for the average enthusiast. The Top Gear Test Track has pushed truly tenacious machines to the limit courtesy of both the trio of presenters and, of course, The Stig. Since Lamborghini has a new big bull, it was only a matter of time before the largest Lambo arrived on the set of the world's greatest motoring show.

Richard Hammond is up first, and his date with the Aventador goes rather swimmingly. After he gets a shot in the control seat, the Stig has the chance to run the Lamborghini around the track. We're smitten with the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 - the Italian automaker's latest hotness. And while it's no secret that crafting the V12-powered supercar is no easy task, the folks at Lamborghini want to show the world just how much attention to detail and quality craftsmanship goes into the production of each Aventador.

To create the new supercar, Lamborghini started with sketches, transferred those drawings to a computer, began testing the materials used to craft the car and then work to build the twelve-cylinder heart found just behind the passenger compartment. It's an intense process, and the end result is a car that will no doubt go down in history as one of the greatest Lamborghini products ever made. Follow the jump to watch the video for yourself.

Automakers try to keep upcoming models secret, meting out limited details on their own terms until the vehicle in question makes its debut. But the best laid plans of mice and men, wrote Steinbeck, often go awry. And in many cases, it's government agencies that can be held responsible, whether it's the vice-president leaking information or a patent offices releasing regulatory sketches.

In this case, it appears to be the Environmental Protection Agency and its fueleconomy.gov website, which has apparently let slip the arrival of the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster. The information in the EPA data sheet is roughly the same as the existing Aventador coupe's, but it's not these sorts of details that count here. After all, how many Lamborghini drivers are really that concerned with fuel economy or carbon emissions?

Now, this should come as no surprise, as we've been expecting the open-air Lambo to arrive at some point, particularly since its predecessors - the Murcielago and Diablo before it - offered convertible models. But this appears to be our first real confirmation.

In yet another happy chapter of our lives, we've been among the first to hop in the year's most hotly anticipated exotic, the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. After the super sport's debut at this year's Geneva Motor Show in March, plus some previous prototype drives while still in camouflage, all that remained was the tell-all day behind its wheel on a hot circuit. We survived. And the seat of our pants is permanently creased by the Aventador's electrifying, world-conquering performance.

It's about time that Lamborghini put its V12 model front-and-center again, and this is what the four-year development of the Aventador has been all about. Only at the very start of its life did the Murciélago ever garner this type of attention. Once its Gallardo V10 sibling was launched, the poor old Murc didn't take it so well and lived deep in the shadows of Lambo's popstar "people's car." Continue reading...

Lamborghini is continuing to share footage of the latest addition to its stable with the commoners of the world. The newest clip follows two Aventador models as they make short work of a rolling piece of country asphalt. There's no weird CGI or apocalyptic theme here. Oh no. Instead, you're treated to a quick vision of what life would be like if you and your significant other managed to fork over the ransom necessary to bring not one, but two examples of the Lamborghini Aventador home for the enjoying.

Life would certainly be different. The company has also showed off an additional clip of the same duo dashing through downtown Rome.

As you may recall, the Aventador is the latest in the evolution of the Raging Bull. The 691 horsepower carbon-fiber beast weighs in at feathery-light 3,472 pounds, which gives it the kind of power-to-weight ratio typically found on a race track. If you like what you're smelling, the suits at Sant'Agata will put you in the driver's seat for around $370,000. If you can't quite swing that (or if you're not sure you if you want to buy a pair of these or that island you have your eye on), we'll have a first drive of the Aventador for you shortly. It's hard to put into words why someone should buy a 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 without sounding like an energy drink-swilling high schooler. It's just hard to describe its level of performance, styling and je ne sais quoi without using the hackneyed standbys like "epic" or "awesome" or "dude."

That's probably why Lamborghini isn't really bothering with words. Instead, they've put together a three-minute clip of the Aventador thwarting a geological disaster to amply illustrate its appeal. Sure, it still doesn't answer how you're going to put groceries in it, or what kind of gas mileage it gets or how much it costs to insure, but if you're still worried about those sort of mundane details, you're a lost cause.

As if the video's impressive CGI, magnificent driving and glamor shots of the new Lamborghini flagship weren't enough, the clip ends with an apt way to describe the car. Check out the video after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Zachary!

The 2011 JEC Composite Show is currently taking place in Paris, and if we were there, our eyes would be treated to the naked beauty that is the Lamborghini Aventador's rolling chassis.

Lamborghini's Aventador LP700-4's chassis is a perfect fit for the JEC show, as it's constructed with a reinforced carbon fiber composite. The composite material was developed by Lamborghini, working in conjunction with engineers at Boeing. Composite materials are also used in the construction of the wheels, frame, seats and a handful of other Aventador parts. Follow the jump for the full press release.

Our compatriots over at Edmunds' Inside Line said it best: The new Lamborghini Aventador looked pretty striking sitting still upon its debut at the Geneva Motor Show this year, but a Raging Bull like this one shouldn't be sitting still. It needs to be run, and run hard.

The newest raging bull from Lamborghini's stables, the 2012 Aventador LP700-4, is a technologically advanced devourer of roads. Case in point: The 691-horsepower beast boasts a monocoque passenger compartment made out of reinforced carbon-fiber. It was developed thanks to assistance from Boeing and weighs-in at a mere 324 pounds. Because of this advanced passenger cell, the Aventador is light, stiff and very strong.

Cars like this end up in the hands of a privileged few, but they also occasionally end up stuffed into guardrails. So how do you fix an Aventador with a carbon-fiber boo-boo? You have Lamborghini send one of its so-called flying doctors, according to Automotive News.

Armed with a suitcase of tools and an extensive knowledge of carbon fiber repairs, the Lamborghini flying doctor is trained to mend fractured Aventadors. In the States, the damaged supercar is sent to the University of Washington in Seattle. There, the flying doctor can fix any sections of shredded carbon fiber.

We can only imagine who expensive the process of shipping and repairing a 2012 Lamborghini Aventador will be. With a $379,000 price-tag, it has to be a bit more than the local body shop charges to pull out a dent.

Everything You Need To Know About Italy's New Raging Bull

Before the Geneva Motor Show press conference on Tuesday, Lamborghini let us in on a private Bologna-area photography studio so that we could get our own sex-machine shots of their raging new V12 firestarter, the 691-horsepower Aventador LP700-4.

First off, we're glad they didn't call it 'Jota' as some were peas-and-carroting about because it's just a silly and unpronounceable name. It probably belonged to some wimpy minor league bull, too. Only one true Jota was ever built in 1970, and it was a just an amped-up and flared Miura (we prefer not to think about the mid-90s Diablo anniversary upgrade kits).

"Aventador" was, according to the best detective work we can muster, a bull whose career peaked in 1993 in the town of Saragozza, Spain, when he and the torero had a particularly spirited encounter prior to ol' Aventador's inevitable skewering. This particular beastie belonged to the breeding stables of the sons of Don Celestino Cuadri Vides and, for unknown reasons surely banal, he bore the number 32 singed on his hide. And now he gets the strongest Lamborghini ever built named after him. And about damned time! The British were getting tired of mispronouncing "Murcièlago" over the past ten years and now they have a new proper name to mutilate.

Assembling an exotic supercar like a Lamborghini is a painstaking process, making sure every last bit fits just right. Most of the time, we don't see that process in such minute detail, but Lamborghini has made sure we get the full experience with its latest supercar.

Dubbed "Aventador LP 700-4" by the press in anticipation of its launch, the long-awaited replacement for the Murciélago is now officially confirmed for debut at the fast-approaching Geneva Motor Show next week.

Along the way, Sant'Agata has shown us the engine and gearbox, the suspension and the monocoque frame, not to mention the myriad spy shots of camouflaged test mules romping around. And now Lamborghini is showing us the full rolling chassis - sans bodywork or interior (save for one seat) but with just about everything else fitted - which it unveiled at an Audi TechDay event. We'll have to wait another week to see the full monte, but for now you can peruse through what we've got so far in the galleries below.

Don't be foolish, Lamborghini. You should have known that a couple of stock "spy" shots of the Aventador LP700-4 wouldn't be enough for us to call off the hounds. Our crack team of camera-wielding warriors managed to lay their lenses on the upcoming Murciélago replacement while the vehicle was undergoing extreme weather testing near the Arctic Circle. If you can look through the snow and the trippy tornado camouflage, you just might notice a face that's even more sinister than that of the old king of the Lamborghini hill. We're guessing that the production version of the vehicle will make use of an even more angular front fascia and rear valance than what we're used to seeing from the already trapezoid-happy supercars.

Rumor has it that we can expect a 0-60 mph time of around three seconds thanks to a 704-horsepower V12 engine with 509 pound-feet of torque on hand. The engine is supposedly mated to an electrohydraulically-actuated transmission that can swap cogs in around 50 milliseconds. Lamborghini hasn't released too many details on the tech behind the transmission just yet, but from the sound of things, it's a new level of quick.

The engineers at Sant'Agata have been so kind as to give the world a glimpse of the carbon fiber reinforced polymer monocoque that will eventually serve as the backbone for the Aventador LP700-4. Using the high-tech (and similarly high-dollar) material should serve up some serious rigidity while keeping weight as low as possible at the same time. Lamborghini says that the entire body structure of the Aventador will hit the scales at an incredibly light 505 pounds, and that the monocoque you see above will make up just 324.5 pounds of that figure.

While using CFRP for a vehicle's body structure is nothing new, Lamborghini says that it has taken the process one step further by making the body molds themselves out of carbon fiber instead of the typical metal. We can't imagine that the change will make a whole heck of a lot of difference in the final product, but it's interesting to know that there's carbon-fiber on carbon-fiber action going on somewhere in Italy as you read this. Typically, when an automaker is preparing to unveil a new car, we get a look at the styling and then the technical details. But Lamborghini is used to doing things backwards. It was, after all, one of the first automakers to build a mid-engine sportscar, and was also the one that got its start reverse-engineering Ferraris with tractor parts. And the backwards tradition continues with the highly anticipated Murciélago successor.

Though Sant'Agata has been gradually releasing details of the supercar's mechanicals - including the pushrod suspension, 6.5-liter V12 and ISR transmission - glimpses at the car's design have been few and far between. This swirly job "spy shot", ostensibly leaked from the factory, has been circulating the internet like a viral video, and gives us one of our best looks yet at the car's shape.

Though the camouflage does a good job of breaking up the body's lines, you can still discern a healthy dose of Reventón-like fighter jet-inspired design cues in the beast expected to be called the Aventador LP700-4. Asian markets are proving increasingly vital for exotic automakers like Lamborghini, but the latest reports in from the Far East show an unprecedented enthusiasm for Sant'Agata's newest model before it's even made its debut.

According to reports, more than 50 examples of the tentatively-dubbed Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 - whose specs were just recently leaked in advance of its anticipated debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March - have been ordered in Singapore alone. Potential customers in the Southeast Asian republic, which just relaunched its own Formula One grand prix a few years ago, received an advance preview of the highly-anticipated new supercar before it went on tour to Hong Kong, mainland China and Japan.

The LP700-4 reportedly costs SGD $1.5 million (or about $1.14 million) in Singapore, where the 50+ advance orders for the new model already eclipse annual sales figures for Lamborghinis, to say nothing of Aston Martin and Bentley, with Ferrari's sales figures squarely within sight. We've heard plenty of speculation about Lamborghini's upcoming Murciélago replacement, the LP700-4, and now a leaked dealer order guide gives us a glimpse of exactly what we can expect from the new flagship Raging Bull.

The LP700-4 (or Aventador, or Jota, as it's been known) is powered by a 6.5-liter V12 with 690 horsepower and 509 pound-feet of torque on tap, routed to the ground via all-wheel drive. Lamborghini's new seven-speed independent shifting rod (ISR, read about it here) transmission is fitted to the new supercar, and the automaker is claiming super-quick shift times of just 50 milliseconds. That, combined with a dry weight of only 3,472 pounds, means that the LP700-4 will sprint to 62 miles per hour in just 2.9 seconds. That, friends, is fast.

In the leaked dealer order guide, which you can see for yourself in our high-res image gallery, Lamborghini details out the whole host of standard and optional equipment for the new LP700-4. New colors like Grigio Estoque and Arancio Argos are available for the exterior, and many different color choices can be had for the Sportivo interior, with or without Alcantara. Of course, high-tech goodies like sat-nav, iPod and USB connectivity and Bluetooth are standard fare, not to mention a giant heaping of street cred.
