A new supercar is a cause good enough on its own; all the more so when the car in question is being auctioned off to raise funds for charity. In this case, the very first U.S.-bound Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder to roll off the assembly line in Sant'Agata Bolognese was auctioned off this past weekend to the highest bidder at the 16th Annual Race to Erase MS event in LA.

This particular Lambo Spyder was prepared especially for the charity event, in black with orange accents in the organization's colors. The winning bid of $270,000 (a good $50k or so over list) was placed together by Kymberly Gold of True Religion Jeans and music producer Victor Newman, who will apparently be sharing the two-seat roadster when it arrives at the beginning of U.S. delivery next month. Proceeds from the auction - part of the $2 million raised at this year's event - go to the Nancy Davis Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis, and the funds will be earmarked for MS research and public awareness campaigns. While Lamoborghini's press conference at the LA Auto Show today doesn't begin until later this afternoon, we can at least show you what the Italians will have on display. Meet the Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder, a natural evolution of the closed-top, mid-engine car with a soft-top mechanism to keep the rain and sun from sullying the Italian-crafted interior. We don't have much information on the 560-4 Spyder yet, except that the new soft-top will open and close in 20 seconds, we love those new wheels and the car's mechanicals will be identical to the standard car. That means the 5.2L V10 still produces 560 hp and this thing will go like a bat, or a bull perhaps, out of hell.

Remember Lamborghini's pledge to attend each major auto show with a new product? Pretty ambitious, but by and large the exotic Italian carmaker has lived up to its promise. In unveiling the LP560-4, the revised version of the Gallardo, Lamborghini opened up a whole new range of possibilities, and we're expecting new Spyder and possibly Superleggera models to follow at coming shows.

The former is likely to be the first to make its debut. While modifying a vehicle - especially one with such dynamic excellence as the Gallardo - to drop its top is a time-consuming affair, remember that the outgoing Gallardo on which the LP560-4 is based had its own Spyder version, so we wouldn't expect too long a development period. Still, the Paris show in October could be a bit soon, so we might have to wait a while longer to see the new Spyder.
