Lotus has set about proving that the Evora is more than just a pretty face, just recently putting its Evora Cup GT4 and 2-Eleven GT4 racers through their paces at the infamous Nürburgring and most recently at Laguna Seca. Both cars were hooned 'round the Green Hell by none other than Olie Hancock, the Lotus rookie test driver. The company didn't release any lap times for either car, but we're guessing the two are plenty quick. Lotus has entered the Evora Cup GT4 in the European GT4 Championship, where it will campaign against the best and brightest of the sports car world.

In order to get the car fit for battle, the company trimmed a total of 441 pounds from the car's curb weight, landing the track-going Evora at just 2,623 pounds. Throw in a 360 horsepower V6 and you've got yourself a recipe for tarmac glory.

Meanwhile, a total of four 2-Eleven GT4 racers will be entered into the same championship, two of which will be campaigned by NFS Racing Dubai. The other two will be flying under the Scuderia Giudici banner - the team that currently leads the GT4 Super Sports category.

Lotus has managed to snag two car of the year honors from EVO magazine for two different machines. The new Evora came out on the top of the heap among the new road going cars, while the Evora went into production earlier this year and as of last month, Lotus has apparently delivered about 800 examples. EVO did their testing in Scotland at the Isle of Skye and the Lotus bested the likes of the Ferrari 458, Aston Martin V12 Vantage and Porsche 911 GT3.

EVO also evaluated track cars at the Bedford Autodrome for their own award and here Lotus again took the top prize. Running against an assortment of competitors from the Ford Focus RS and Mitsubishi Evo to more extreme machines like a Lamborghini Gallardo and the latest Arial Atom, the Lotus 2-Eleven got the best score. The 2-Eleven had the second best time and was found to be the most fun to drive. Considering the 2-Eleven looks more like a pure race car, it's astonishing that under British rules you can actually get single vehicle type approval to drive them on public roads. 'Scuse me Lotus? We'd love to try out the 2-Eleven!
The car was campaigned by the Empire Motorsports team from Malaysia that took it easy in qualifying for a 36th starting position, but then worked their way up to 9th overall after 18 hours of racing. Unfortunately, the sequential gearbox packed it in at that point. The team consisting mostly of automotive technology students spent the next three hours replacing the gearbox, dropping the car to 50th overall. Over the final three hours, the drivers managed to work their way back up to 44th overall out of 59 finishing cars.

[Source: Lotus]
Continue reading Lotus 2-Eleven GT4 finishes first 24 hour race in Dubai

Lotus 2-Eleven GT4 finishes first 24 hour race in Dubai originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Jan 2009 08:31:00 EST.

In 2007, Lotus released the 2-Eleven track car for customers who wanted an affordable club racer for their weekend fun time. Now the gang at Lotus Sport, the motorsports and tuning arm of the English sports car maker, has created an even more ferocious 2-Eleven, dubbed the GT4 Supersport. As the name implies, this one is designed to conform to the SRO GT4 Supersport technical rules. The modified body work is accompanied by more power, a sequential gearbox and full roll cage. The GT4 gets an extra 15 horsepower taking it to 270 with 181 lb-ft of torque. Power is put down to the ground through a new 6-speed sequential gearbox with a fore-aft shift lever. Lotus has also tied the gear position and shift indicator into the engine management system to manage torque output during shifts. Racers can upshift without lifting their foot while the engine automatically blips the throttle for downshifts. Lotus is only planning to build 10 cars initially for delivery in March 2009. This professional race car will run £78,255, although Lotus says some of the changes can be applied to existing cars for those looking to improve performance.

Gallery: Lotus Sport 2-Eleven GT4 Supersport

[Source: Lotus]
Continue reading Lotus Sport reveals 270-hp 2-Eleven GT4 Supersport racer

Lotus Sport reveals 270-hp 2-Eleven GT4 Supersport racer originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 11:28:00 EST. Turned out the owner was our friend, Patrick O'Neill, who had graciously agreed to be the lone Lotus representative in the supercar category. Apparently when Patrick lined up in the paddock to take his shot at the hill on day 2, a familiar face appeared at his side. While he wasn't sure exactly who it was, he knew he knew that mug from somewhere. Turned out it was another American named Patrick - Patrick Dempsey. That's right, McDreamy himself. While O'Neill chatted with Dempsey he learned that the actor was quite a Lotus fan as well as a promising racer. Dempsey asked if he could go along for the ride and O'Neill obliged. It took a little while, but O'Neill just sent us a video clip of their encounter.

What you'll see in this video clip is just a snippet of the hour or so that the two Patricks spent together on that morning in West Sussex. As O'Neill describes it, "This was a cool experience...I was very lucky to be able to drive my Lotus 2-Eleven in the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year. Patrick Dempsey. AKA Dr. McDreamy, is a Lotus fan and asked for a ride. I got to spend over an hour with him and he is a great guy and a real racer." Watch the clip closely and you'll notice the Pininfarina P4/5 custom Enzo of James Glickenhaus ahead of them and an Aston Martin behind being driven by former F1 champion Damon Hill behind. Enjoy. Thanks for sharing, Patrick!

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading VIDEO: Taking McDreamy up the hill at Goodwood

VIDEO: Taking McDreamy up the hill at Goodwood originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 14 Jun 2008 19:01:00 EST. While it was hard to argue with the 2-Eleven's performance, particularly when you consider that it could be driven to and from the track in the UK when fitted with the right kit, the £39,995 price was out of reach for the average enthusiast. Lotus decided that open-air thrills should be a bit more financially achievable, so it's unveiled a new version of the 2-Eleven packing the Elise R's naturally-aspirated, 189 hp four.

The entry-level 2-Eleven still tips the scales around 1,500 pounds and comes equipped with most of the bits found on its blown big brother, but at a slightly more manageable £27,995. Start ticking the options and that price starts heading north... quickly. Two limited-slip differentials are available, as well as a carbon fiber tonneau cover, four-piston brakes, removable steering wheel and an FIA-approved 70-liter fuel tank. Choose the Aero pack and you get an adjustable carbon fiber spoiler and front splitter, while the Sport pack adds the ever-popular Ohlins two-way dampers.

Sales will begin abroad later this year and there's no word on whether we'll be able to get this new 2-Eleven here in the States, yet.

Hit the jump for Lotus' press release.
Continue reading Lotus releasing entry-level 2-Eleven track tool

Lotus releasing entry-level 2-Eleven track tool originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Mar 2008 09:02:00 EST.
