Porsche, like the rest of the automotive world, is gearing up for the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of this month. While for us that means carefully calculating our staggered chow-runs to In-N-Out Burger in-between press conferences, for Porsche it involves prepping two more world-class sports cars with which to dominate the competition.

In a press release today, Porsche announced that it would be bringing along its 911 Carrera 4 for a North American debut. Having already seen the all-wheel-drive 911 at the Paris Motor Show (hell, we've even driven the thing), the Carrera showing will serve as nothing more than an appetizer to the main course: a world premiere.

Right now, the German automaker is saying only that the new car is a "compact sports car." Previous reports have said that the next-generation Cayman could be coming to LA, so the mystery may not be especially deep.

Word has it BMW may be planning to bring a new electric vehicle concept to the Los Angeles Auto Show. A report in the French magazine l'Automobile suggests the German manufacturer will show up with a sportier version of the i3. BMW has made big waves about shifting its naming structure to brand coupes, convertibles and sports cars with even-number designations, leaving odd digits for base models and hatchbacks. That means the concept could theoretically wear an i4 badge if and when it rolls across the stage. The report suggests the i4 will offer buyers a lower, more attractive roofline and come with a steeper price tag if it makes production.

Both the i3 and the i4 will presumably make use of the same carbon-reinforced plastic chassis, and odds are the sportier variant will benefit from the same 170-horsepower electric motor found in the five-door. Expect more details as we get closer to the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month.
BMW bringing i4 concept to LA Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Nov 2012 11:33:00 EST. The new Forester arrives with either a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine that produces 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque or a 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will make 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

The exterior adds some more refinement and the turbo model loses its iconic hood scoop - something some of us are glad to see go. Instead, the turbocharged Forester receives a unique front fascia, seen here in the image above. Subaru says that the Forester's fuel economy will improve, but final numbers have not been released. The Forester will debut a new six-speed manual transmission and a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission. (The CVT includes either six- or eight-speed manual modes so you can swap through the 'gears'.)

The fourth-generation Forester also features a new suspension and 8.7-inches of ground clearance for any tough off-road obstacles.

We'll have all the official details (as well as driving impressions) in about one month's time. Volkswagen has pulled back the wraps on the 2013 Beetle Convertible ahead of the vehicle's debut at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show. The drophead makes use of the same flattened roof line of the 2012 Beetle Coupe when the folding soft top is in place. Stow the roof, and the mechanism lays flat to increase rear visibility. Volkswagen says the roof can go from fully stowed to in place in just 10 seconds, and engineers built in an automatic rollover support system comprised of two computer-actuated bars behind the rear seat that pop up in just four milliseconds in the event of a collision.

Buyers can choose between three engine options, including a 2.5-liter five-cylinder good for 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder is also available with 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque and can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Finally, diesel buyers will be happy to hear Volkswagen will offer the 2013 Beetle Convertible with a familiar 2.0 turbo-diesel four-cylinder good for 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. That mill can be bolted to a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG.
During a mid-year speech being delivered in Japan, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President and CEO Takanobu Ito stated that the production 2014 Acura RLX sedan will be revealed at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show in late November. The RLX Concept (pictured) first debuted at the New York Auto Show this past April.

The most significant part about the RLX package will be its use of Honda's new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, which is essentially a through-the-road electric all-wheel-drive system. This new technology uses three individual motors, and combined output is said to be somewhere around 370 horsepower, the bulk of which comes from a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6. When the RLX Concept debuted, there was talk of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, but we'll see if that actually flows through to production.

A less-powerful, 310-horsepower, front-wheel-drive version of the RLX is also said to be in the cards. Acura initially stated that the RLX would be capable of achieving at least 30 miles per gallon in both the city and highway driving cycles.

We'll have more details about the 2014 RLX closer to its debut. The LA Auto Show festivities kick off on November 28. Scroll down to read Acura's press release, containing the full notes from Ito's speech.
Continue reading 2014 Acura RLX to debut at LA Auto Show

2014 Acura RLX to debut at LA Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 11:28:00 EST.
For the last nine years, the Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge has been part of the LA Auto Show, pitting design studios from around the world against each other in a forward-thinking competition.

In the past, there have been a variety of challenge themes, including last year's "movie cars" challenge. This year the competition is turning to the likes of the California Highway Patrol, attempting to portend what law enforcement vehicles may hold for us in 2025. While previous competitions have set the future date as far as 2050, this date is a more tangible one, meaning that each entrant may be more closely rooted in the realities of cities throughout the world in the next decade and beyond.

According to Chuck Pelly, director of Design Los Angeles, "Adding the element of law enforcement to this year's competition creates another layer of importance that makes a challenge equal to the level of our participants."

Thus far, Bentley, BMW, General Motors, Hyundai, Honda, and Subaru have put their design studios to the task and accepted the challenge. The winner will be announced at an event during the LA Auto Show on November 29. See below for the complete press release.
Continue reading Highway patrol car of the future picked as this year's LA Auto Show Design Challenge theme

Highway patrol car of the future picked as this year's LA Auto Show Design Challenge theme originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 14:29:00 EST.
According to Autocar, a new range-topping Jaguar XFR-S is set to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November.

If the current XKR-S coupe and convertible models are anything to go on, the four-door XFR-S should be powered by a more potent version of Jaguar's 5.0-liter supercharged V8, producing around 550 horsepower. Expect some suspension enhancements to be on board, as well, along with some exhaust tuning to make the big cat growl louder than ever before.

When it launches, the XFR-S will battle head-to-head with the likes of the 560-hp BMW M5 and 518-hp Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG (or 550 with the optional AMG performance pack). For reference, the standard XFR produces 510 hp from its detuned version of the supercharged V8.

We expect more details to arrive closer to the car's alleged November debut. For now, click through the attached high-res gallery to see spy shots of the XFR-S testing at the Nürburgring.
Jaguar XFR-S to debut at LA Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 Jul 2012 18:59:00 EST.
The SC 430 wasn't exactly a hot ticket item, but it was the only Lexus model available with two doors until the model was discontinued in 2010. That could change for the 2014 model year, as Inside Line reports that Lexus is primed to unleash a coupe version of the all-new GS.

While Lexus hasn't officially announced that a two-door GS is forthcoming, IL points out that there are plenty of signs that point towards a performance coupe. For instance, Lexus Boss Mark Templin reportedly stated that he was interested in a sport coupe in the $60,000 to $70,000 range. Further, Lexus planning chief Karl Schlicht reportedly told Automotive News earlier in the year that the brand needed a coupe to round out its lineup of sedans and utility vehicles. Certainly not a confirmation of a sleek new coupe, but the puzzle pieces appear to be coming together.

One small glitch is that the GS sedan starts out at $46,900, which is a far cry from $60,000. The pricing difference could come in the form of a high-performance F-Sport engine or perhaps a more performance-oriented hybrid.

Chances are if Lexus does add a sporty coupe to its lineup, we're going to hear about it by the time the Los Angeles Auto Show rolls around this fall. We're more than okay with more GS variants, and a performance coupe always sounds like a good idea to us.
Lexus GS coupe slated to arrive in 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 May 2012 09:58:00 EST.
Say what you will about the whole retro design trend that gave us such vehicles as the Mini, the Chrysler PT Cruiser, the Ford GT and the Fiat 500, but it has been (neo Thunderbird notwithstanding) a rather successful formula for several automakers, Volkswagen chief among them. The German automaker is now on its third generation of Beetle, and is preparing to launch the new convertible version at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the fall (previewed by the E-Bugster concept pictured above). And when it does, it is slated to go even more retro.

That much, according to Car and Driver, will come in three special launch editions. Each one will be dedicated to a specific decade from the original Beetle's long history - tipped to center around the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Special touches will be period-specific, including unique colors, seat upholstery and even white-wall tires. We'll have to wait a few months to see how many of these particular details pan out, but recent history has been replete with launch editions from Volkswagen.
Volkswagen to launch new Beetle convertible with three decade editions originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 May 2012 18:32:00 EST.
Few automakers make crossovers quite like Nissan does. And that extends to its luxury division Infiniti, as well. Infiniti crossovers tend to be, well... rather small. The FX combined a sportscar with a crossover long before BMW thought of the X6, and the EX is barely bigger than most hatchbacks. Want something bigger from Infiniti? That'd be the QX, but it's a proper truck-based SUV, and that behemoth just isn't for everyone. Enter the JX.

A new safety system warns the driver and even stops the JX if something scurries across its path while backing up.

Previewed in concept form at Pebble Beach back in August, the JX35 is now set to make its production debut at the upcoming LA Auto Show. Its design incorporates themes laid down by the Essence show car, but in a much larger form that encompasses three rows of seating for seven coddled souls. The JX is also jam-packed with luxury features and the latest technology you'd expect from a Japanese luxury automobile. That includes the usual suspects: adaptive cruise control, cameras all around, lane-departure warning and a Bose sound system. There's also a new industry-first safety system that warns the driver and even stops the vehicle if something scurries across its path while backing up.

All that tech and cabin space is handled by Nissan's 3.5-liter DOHC V6 driving 265 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque through a CVT to either the front wheels or all four. An independent front suspension handles the load up front, with a multi-link set-up in the back. Vented disc brakes larger than 12 inches in diameter at all four corners work with a host of electronic nannies to keep everything in check and are packed inside 18- or available 20-inch alloys.

Prospective buyers will begin taking delivery of 2013 models next spring, with prices starting at $40,450 - before taxes and delivery - for the front-wheel-drive model. Extra features are bundled into five packages, and together with all-wheel drive, can quickly push the price into the high-$50K range.
Continue reading 2013 Infiniti JX crosses over into the big leagues

2013 Infiniti JX crosses over into the big leagues originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 14:31:00 EST.
The 2006 Azera was the first shot that Hyundai took at going upmarket, a big, soft, front-wheel-drive sedan packed with content and offered at a bargain price compared to the Toyota Avalon and Buick LaCrosse. But today, this Korean import seems more like it comes from the Island of Misfit Toys. Azera has quietly persisted while Hyundai has launched several well-received models, from the Genesis to the 2011 Sonata to the brand-new Veloster. Now comes the Azera's 15 minutes of fame, in the form of a complete overhaul for 2012 designed to make the Azera more of a premium offering.

The new Azera adopts Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture design language that we've loved on the Sonata, but in this application something went amiss. Everything looks good up front, as the Azera's Fluidic front fascia looks similarly aggressive. But follow the attractive chrome trim strip back from the headlights and something goes bump in the night. The Azera's rear quarter panel retains a bulging character line similar to the old model, except that in the new sheet metal the flanks are even more pronounced - and Buick-like. Things get better out back, as the new Azera has an elegant decklid and rear taillights that wouldn't look out of place on any luxury car.

Underhood, the second-generation Azera gets a new 3.3-liter V6 with direct injection. This "Lambda II" powerplant is good for 293 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque, while providing an estimated 20 miles per gallon in the city and 29 on the highway. Hyundai has also fitted the new Azera with its Active Eco mode, which should be good for a five-percent boost in fuel economy, according to the automaker. Like the old Azera, power is fed to the front wheels through a six-speed transaxle.

Standard Azera equipment includes some formerly optional content, like a navigation system with rearview camera, and Hyundai is also equipping Azeras with its Blue Link telematics system. Leather interior with heated front and rear seats, 18-inch alloys, and Vehicle Stability Management are all included, as well.

The 2012 Azera goes on sale in February, and while we will admit to being more excited about some of Hyundai's other launches next year (that's you, Elantra coupe) we're certainly not going to complain when we get our opportunity to chew up some comfortable highway miles, Azera style.

We've got the official press release from the LA Auto Show after the jump, as well as a full gallery of Azera images.
Continue reading 2012 Hyundai Azera goes Fluidic, gets direct injection power [w/video]

2012 Hyundai Azera goes Fluidic, gets direct injection power [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 13:26:00 EST.
Land Rover is continuing to explore how to approach the next generation Defender, as evidenced by this updated version of its DC100 Concept that was initially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The latest version features new 20-inch wheels shod with Cooper all-terrain tires and a new Heritage Blue paint scheme with a Candy Weiss roof.

Land Rover Chief Designer Gerry McGovern, who unveiled the new DC100 Concept to the Los Angeles Auto Show crowd, stressed that while the company is serious about building a new Defender, this particular concept may not be representative of the future production version. "The reality is that we're serious about putting this vehicle into production - not necessarily this design, but a Defender into production," he tells us. "It's one of several design studies under consideration at the moment."

It's apparent that McGovern's design team at Land Rover has struggled wrestling with rendering a modern day Defender that doesn't abandon the model's loyal followers. "Should it be evolutionary or should it be revolutionary? How much of the design cues based on the original functionality are relevant in a modern context? For us we feel it's important to recognize our past but not be harnessed by it. The retro trap is one we have to be very careful of. If you're too retrospective it can be a kiss of death."

Earlier today at a private event in Los Angeles, Jaguar presented an updated version of the C-X16 Concept that initially debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in September. The car, freshly clad in a coat of White Pearl paint, was presented by Jaguar design chief Ian Callum who all but confirmed that a version of the C-X16 would be put into production.

The C-X16 Concept certainly looks ready to takes its place as a modern rendition of the E-Type with various design cues that pay tribute to the legendary two-seater. The technical aspects of the car are anything but retro, however, with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 under the hood paired with an electric motor built into the 8-speed transmission. The combination produces 468 horsepower and 505 lb-ft torque, which Jaguar says is good for a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 186 mph.

Whether items like the hybrid power system will make it into production is certainly questionable, along with the trick side-opening rear hatch (an E-type tribute) and the stunning red leather interior with carbon fiber race seats that are more likely to remain conceptual features only.

You can see our live photos of the updated C-X16 Concept sporting its new White Pearl paint in the high-res gallery above.
Updated Jaguar C-X16 Concept inches closer to production originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 09:27:00 EST. Just as it has for years with the European-market Fiat 500, Abarth has gotten its hands on the version made in Toluca, Mexico for the North American market, taking what is rapidly emerging as a popular choice for style-conscious American drivers and turning it into a proper pocket rocket. Being introduced today at the LA Auto Show, the US-market Fiat 500 Abarth is about as jam-packed with performance goodies as they come.

The standard Fiat 500 has been turbocharged and intercooled up to 160 horsepower.

For starters, the naturally-aspirated 1.4-liter MultiAir engine in the standard Fiat 500 has been turbocharged and intercooled up to 160 horsepower - quite a punch for such a little car to pack. But the Abarth approach would never stop at just an engine mod: the turbo Cinquecento has also been treated to an upgraded suspension, rolling stock, aero package and brake kit.

Sixteen-inch alloys (or optional 17s, also available painted in black or white) ride on Pirelli rubber and let the red brake calipers peek through. Dual exhaust tips protrude out the back, while racing stripes in white, black or red give it a track-ready look. The electronic nannies are also fully defeatable.

And Abarth didn't overlook the cabin, either There's a thick-rimmed, flat-bottomed, perforated-leather steering wheel; a pair of heavily bolstered racing buckets; a performance-oriented instrument cluster with turbo boost gauge and shift light; and TomTom sat-nav with Blue&Me connectivity.

Like what you've read so far? There's plenty more to digest in the extensive press release after the jump and the super-sized gallery of high-resolution images. Stop crossing off the days on your "Performance Cars of Italy" calendar and check 'em out for yourself, and watch this space for live images from the LA show floor.
Continue reading 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth brings accessible Italian performance to American shores

2012 Fiat 500 Abarth brings accessible Italian performance to American shores originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 00:01:00 EST.
The Motor Press Guild has named the 2012 Audi A7 as the its first-ever Car Of The Year. MPG calls itself the largest automotive media association in the United States, and says that the the A7 was chosen as the first recipient of the organization's Car Of The Year award because of its styling, handling and slew of advanced technologies.

MPG says that the A7 faced some stiff competition from four other finalists chosen by a panel of members. The entire MPG membership then evaluated and ranked those vehicles at the organization's track day in October.

Motor Press Guild President Laura Burstein will present Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen with the Car Of The Year award at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.

Of course, the MPG wasn't the only organization to honor the A7. Automobile Magazine recently named the high-end hatchback its Car of the Year as well. Hit the jump for the MPG press release.
Continue reading Audi A7 wins Motor Press Guild's inaugural Car Of The Year award

Audi A7 wins Motor Press Guild's inaugural Car Of The Year award originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 16:02:00 EST.
