It was only a matter of time before someone bent the full brunt of their mechanical might toward creating a full-scale, operational version of the light cycle from Tron: Legacy. That someone just happened to be the crew from Parker Brothers Choppers. Using lithium-ion batteries and a 96-volt electric motor, the guys built a real-life version of the bikes made famous by the first Tron. If that's not enough to pique your interest, they're also giving one of the bikes away to one very lucky fan.

If you want to claim a light cycle as your very own, all you have to do is craft a brief, three-minute video describing why you deserve to take the cycle home as your very own, don't do anything illegal or dangerous while filming it and get chosen out of the hordes of other sci-fi fans itching to get their paws on the machine. It's that simple. Hit the jump to check out a video of the light cycle whirring around a mall parking lot, and head over to the Parker Brothers site for more information on the giveaway.
Continue reading Real electric Tron Light Cycle rolls up to suburbia

Real electric Tron Light Cycle rolls up to suburbia originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 19:28:00 EST.
SideQuesting.com is a website focused on discussions about video games that decided to host a competition to see who among its readership could draw up the best Tron Light Cycle. The entries were received and the results are... well, they're pretty amazing.

Two winners were chosen, one from the United States and an International representative. John A. Frye took home the top spot among American artists with an appropriately American interpretation of a futuristic bike, while Raphael Laurent of Switzerland won the international prize. Each winner received a copy of the Art of Tron Legacy book and two Light Cycle toys.

We've assembled a gallery of the top eight submissions, but we think you should still go ahead and take a stroll through all of the submissions at SideQuesting.com. A variety of concepts are on display, and they range from jaw-dropping renders to beautiful hand-drawn sketches.

We'll be the first to admit that we went full geek over Tron: Legacy, and gaming website SideQuesting.com is showing its enthusiasm for the franchise by running a contest to reimagine the famous light cycle. Disney's reworked battle bikes for Legacy were brilliant, but SQ wants to see exactly what designers cruising the web can come up with on their own. There's a hitch, though: Artists are supposed to spend no longer than two hours on each submission.

Each design will be featured at SideQuesting.com, and winners will receive cool prizes including an Art of Tron: Legacy book, a white light cycle figurine and a deluxe light cycle figurine. SlideQuesting says that the total value of all the swag is around $75.

If you think you've got what it takes to work up the best design of them all, head over to SideQuesting.com for a look at the full rules and get started.

Tron Light Cycle Replica by Parker Brothers Choppers - Click above to watch the video after the break

The overpriced custom chopper fad seems to be over, but that doesn't mean enterprising individuals aren't still welding together custom motorcycles in an effort to stand out from the crowd. Exhibit A: The $55,000 custom Tron Light Cycle replica from Parker Brothers Choppers in Florida.

The standing-out-from-the-crowd part is easy enough... just looking at this thing in the garage is likely enough of an enticement that the builders will be able to sell the 10 machines currently planned for production. The actual act of riding one of these suckers, though, looks to be the significantly more difficult part of the equation.

Want proof? Check out the video after the break, where a couple of guys (presumably the builders) take their creation out for a quick spin in a parking lot. First, note how wide the bike is, both in the middle where the rider's legs are splayed and at the front, where the clip-on handlebars are wide enough to clip side mirrors down a narrow street - necessarily so due to the ridiculously wide tires. Looks comfy, no?

Power comes from a 1,000cc liquid-cooled V-twin cribbed from a Suzuki TL, which means the Light Cycle replica should be plenty fast in a straight line. With 474 pounds of mass, a 100-inch wheelbase and those aforementioned steamroller tires, we'd bet that handling won't exactly be this machine's strong suit. See for yourself in the video after the break.

Real-llfe Tron Lightcycle - Click above for high-res image gallery

Just when you thought you had looked everywhere - and failed miserably - to distinguish yourself from the rest of the gang down at your favorite biker bar, the crew at Parker Brothers Choppers has come up with just the bike to, shall we say, kick it up a notch. Ah, yes... a Lightcycle should do the trick just fine. After clicking the the eBay Motors Buy It Now button and placing a "nominal" $500 deposit, all you have do is come up with the other $34,500 and let the fun begin.

According to the listing, Parker Brothers allows for further Lightcycle individuality by adding a neon accent color of red, blue, yellow, green or orange to the black bike. The colored LEDs will shine through clear panels, adding to the whole deadly streak motif of the Lightcycle. But if you really love orange, you better hurry, as only one color will be available for each of the five Lightcycles built. Seem a little frivolous? Not to worry, the ad assures us that "the Lightcycle is being built for everyday use" and will be complete with a certificate of origin and a unique VIN number ending in one through five.

Now, once you've chosen your powerplant, you're almost ready for battle. The two available choices include a high-powered gasoline engine or, for all you cutting edge conservationists out there, a high performance electric motor. No official power figures are available in the listing, just the promise of "high performance." Wow... just bring your personalized TRON plates, and as long as you don't have to make any turns.... ever... this thing promises to be more fun that a barrel of monkeys.

We have a feeling the 22x12-inch wheels will make catching the inside line of your favorite long sweeper a bit of a challenge, but don't worry: the included non-DOT-approved Tron helmet should keep you out of harm's way when shooting off the road! We were almost temped to hit the button and get our own, but the staff simply could not decide between the green or blue accents, so we scrapped it. That means there is still one available for you... and we'll be sure to make way if we see you coming towards us! Thanks to everyone for the tips.

At last year's Comic-Con , one of the biggest throwbacks to '80s geekery was the surprise announcement of an update to the classic film (in our minds, at least), Tron. Attendees got a sneak peek of the new film's Light Cycle sequence, with a pair of the bikes dueling, leaving those signature, impossible-to-negotiate light trails in their wake. Mercifully, it the TR2N moniker used at the end of the clip in 2008 has given way to the much more palatable Tron Legacy. Further, while the teaser leaked onto the web briefly during last year's con, Disney's legal army shut it all down pretty quickly.

Now, a year later, that footage has been officially released for all to see at this year's convention. It seems that the Light Cycles have evolved in the intervening decades and are now much faster and more realistic in appearance. Follow the jump to see it all unfold in the the official Comic-Con 2009 teaser trailer for Tron Legacy, and do your best to hold back your inner fanboy. Oh, and one last thing - yes, that's Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Flynn, though with a decidedly darker tone than before.

[Source: Asphalt and Rubber]
Continue reading Comic-Con 2009: Tron Legacy gives the classic Light Cycle a high-tech update

Comic-Con 2009: Tron Legacy gives the classic Light Cycle a high-tech update originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 26 Jul 2009 13:20:00 EST. Jeff Bridges reprises his role as Flynn, though the character may take on a more menacing tone in part two. Teaser footage was unveiled just yesterday at the San Diego Comic Con. While Tron was just moderately successful at the box office, the film's legend has grown along with its 80s-era fans, enough to earn itself a sequel over two decades later. The Light Cycles starred in what was perhaps the original film's most iconic scene, and they make a grand comeback in Tr2n, the tentative (and very unfortunate) name of the sequel.

Seriously, watch the crappy, clandestinely-obtained footage from the convention panel after the break. Color us super excited based on this early teaser. When we see a proper copy of this, we'll likely be even more stoked. Seriously, how cool are the new Light Cycles? We think they look awesome in their new uncovered form, and the updated graphics make us hope that the new story, said to be written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz from Lost, lives up to our childhood Tron memories.

[Source: Slashfilm]
