Our friends at Road & Track recently stopped by Cars and Coffee in Irvine, California, with the 2013 SRT Viper and found themselves a place to park between a Lamborghini Aventador and a Lexus LFA. Those machines might as well be the three musketeers of ludicrous exhaust notes, and rather than keep those 24 raging cylinders muffled, R&T set about conducting an orchestra of internal combustion. On seeing these three lined up, we were more than prepared to call the Viper victorious when it came to tickling our ear drums, but the latest domestic V10 sounds down right civilized in this company.

If we're picking favorites, we have to say the LFA takes the cake. There's something about the noise of a street-legal V10 that can wrap it's tachometer all the way to 9,000 rpm that turns our knees to quivering dollops of jelly. Check out the clip below for a listen. We shouldn't need to tell you to get frisky with the volume.
Continue reading Watch an Aventador, Viper and LFA play the songs of their people

Watch an Aventador, Viper and LFA play the songs of their people originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Jan 2013 14:59:00 EST.
Another month, another car pack for Forza Horizon. This time it's the Recaro Car Pack featuring a motley gang of cars and trucks: the 1983 GMC Vandura G-1500, 1995 Ford Mustang Cobra R, 2012 Cadillac Escalade ESV, 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLR, 2012 Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition and 2012 Lotus Exige S.

It'll be up for download on Xbox Live on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 for 400 MS Points. As usual, if you have the Forza Horizon Season Pass you can get them all free, and Season Pass holders will also get a bonus car that's not pictured: the 2009 Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster.

The Pagani is everything opposite to that Vandura, but while you might not ever win anything with the van, you can always use the back of it as a place to give out free hugs. Check out the video and press release below for more details.
Continue reading Forza Horizon announces January Recaro Car Pack with LFA Nürburgring Edition

Forza Horizon announces January Recaro Car Pack with LFA Nürburgring Edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Dec 2012 16:01:00 EST.
Lexus has officially built the very last LFA. The 500th Lexus supercar rolled from the company's Motomachi facility on December 14th wearing all of the goodies of the Nürburgring package and white paint. Toyota's Lexus division started production on the car exactly two years ago on December 15, 2010 and built just one unit per working day. A total of 170 workers were hand-picked to handle parts manufacturing, assembly and painting for the LFA project. While Lexus has made it clear it will produce no more LFA models, lessons gleaned from the vehicle's construction may translate into other future products.

Specifically, Toyota says it may employ its carbon fiber reinforced plastic experience moving forward. As you may recall, the LFA made extensive use of CFRP and carbon fiber, and Lexus even created a special rotary loom to stitch together the supercar's A-pillars. Take a look at the brief press release on the last LFA below.
Continue reading Lexus builds final LFA supercar

Lexus builds final LFA supercar originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Dec 2012 11:14:00 EST.
According to the Twitter musings of one Jeremy Clarkson, the Top Gear UK crew is back in the States for another harebrained adventure, this time in a trio of comely supercars. Judging by some grainy Twitter pics, Clarkson is in Las Vegas with Richard Hammond and James May, set to drive cross-country in a Lexus LFA, SRT Viper and Aston Martin Vanquish.

The ever-wry Clarkson appears to have just landed, having announced on Twitter less than 24 hours ago: "People of America. We have passed muster at your idiotic border controls, and we are here, ready to play."

In fact, the Top Gear action this time 'round might not be limited solely to the US - on November 7, Clarkson tweeted, "We will be in Mexico next week." Earlier missives suggest a sizable journey - some 3,000 miles. We're guessing the trip will work out to be the longest journey by a media member in the new SRT, and not by a little bit. Who knows, that may even hold true for the Lexus and Aston Martin. Viva Lost Wages, boys.

Details about TG's journey or when the story will air on the BBC are otherwise slim... anyone else have information on where they're headed? Let us know in Comments.
Top Gear blokes starting supercar road trip across USA originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Nov 2012 10:45:00 EST. This past summer the Internet happened upon a couple of photos of this supposed LFA GTE prototype (right), an endurance racer that could perhaps be seen at next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. That prediction could be boosted by the Japanese company informing the site Lexus Enthusiast "We have no plan to use the LFA for the 2013 Nürburgring 24 Hours race."

Without providing any details, Lexus race driver Akira Iida tweeted a photo of an LFA racer on a rolling road, and it is almost a dead black ringer for the car from a few months ago. While we scrounge for more info, it's nice to start imagining another top maker battling through the pack of Corvette, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren and Mercedes models already in the series.
Lexus LFA racer image tweeted by driver Akira Iida originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Nov 2012 13:15:00 EST.
Lexus has brought along a LFA Nürburgring Edition to its SEMA booth this year, apparently for no better reasons than to (a) show us the car in color other than the orange we saw for its Geneva debut and (b) let show-goers take turns running the car on a dynamometer. We'll admit, that last part is pretty good... we're waiting for the crowds to die down to take our turn, and to verify the alleged 562 horsepower output.

While we wait, why not peruse the above gallery of live LFA images? Supercar goodness therein.
Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition pops up at SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 18:40:00 EST.
In August, Lexus held its Unleash the LFA contest on Facebook, with the winner getting to spend the day in its LFA supercar (at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, no less), receive track instructions from pro driver Scott Pruett and also win a three-day High Performance Driving Experience at Skip Barber Racing School. In a random selection, Mark Clemons of Culver City, California was the lucky winner, and on September 18, he collected his prize.

After warming up with some autocross action in a Lexus IS F and getting some instruction about Laguna Seca, Clemons was let loose on the challenging 11-turn track with the 552-horsepower LFA. Then it was Pruett's turn behind the wheel, and he proceeds to give Clemons the ride of his life, something that almost almost goes without saying.

Lexus and its LFA may be still fairly young in the supercar world, but that doesn't mean the model has lacked for variants in its scant two-year existence. Last year we were given the Nürburgring Edition to chew on, and we've seen, periodically, some other very limited-edition models out and about.

The car that you see here - noted on the bodywork as "AD-X" - is another branch on the old family tree, then. Our sources indicate that the AD-X follows a naming convention for LFA special projects, the first of which going by AD-A, with an AD-B model also spotted over the last few months. All of the cars in question have been one-off models, so that is what we are anticipating with this red and white beauty, too.

Accenting the racy red/white livery are a black hood, roof, and wing; all of which are said to be unpainted carbon fiber, rather than a different shade of paint. That the car also wears an even more aggressive than standard body kit - you'll notice an extra chin spoiler on the front fascia of the car - which speaks to what we believe to be a higher level of performance overall. More power than the standard LFA's 552 horsepower could certainly be coaxed from the 4.8-liter V10, too. We'll wait for further word from Lexus and hope for a nice, round 600-horsepower output figure.
Lexus LFA Special Edition AD-X spied originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 16:57:00 EST.
There is only one Jay Leno and there is only one Fuji Speedway. It turns out there is also only one Lexus LFA Roadster. Put them together and you have the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage. Leno, as you may recall, recently did a tour of Japan which previously saw him at Nissan discussing the future of the Z. In this video, the comedian heads to Toyota City to watch the LFA being built and then to Oyama, Japan to drive the aforementioned fresh-air version of the V10 supercar around Fuji.

Jay says this is the only roofless LFA that's going to be built (we're not sure what that says for the maroon model they showed at auto shows in 2008 - perhaps that one wasn't a runner or it's been repainted white). In this case, you can can take the word "roofless" literally - the top isn't stowed somewhere, the LFA Roadster doesn't have one at all. That never seems to curtail the enjoyment, however, with Jay exclaiming "Oh my God!" more than once and declaring of other supercars, "None feel as refined as this."

The LFA Roadster, Jay's Serious Driving Face, glorious V10 revving and a matte black LFA built for a Buddhist monk are all in the video below.
Continue reading Jay Leno drives Lexus LFA Roadster in its motherland

Jay Leno drives Lexus LFA Roadster in its motherland originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 19:15:00 EST.
It was a little more than four years ago that Lexus announced it would campaign an LFA in the Nürburgring 24-hour race. From 2008 with a black prototype that no one would talk about, the Gazoo Racing LFA has raced every year since and suffered breakdowns, fires, more mechanical issues and high-speed encounters with guardrails.

There were enough literal hard knocks that this year, of the team's drivers said that that they were still rookies. Even so, the five-year "novices" took SP8-Class honors ahead of two Aston Martins and an Audi A8, getting some silverware to go along with that scintillating exhaust note.

The team put together a video recap of its years on the 'Ring, and it's definitely worth a watch. You'll find it posted below.
Continue reading Lexus / Gazoo Racing Nürburgring video is a tribute to perseverance

Lexus / Gazoo Racing Nürburgring video is a tribute to perseverance originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 01 Sep 2012 10:01:00 EST.
Lexus' annual Golden Opportunity Sales Event is in effect, and an additional bit of golden yellow to go along with it this year is the Unleash the LFA sweepstakes. The deal is simple: you log onto your Facebook page, check out the Lexus Facebook page, submit your personal details to enter the contest and then spread the link to your Facebook friends.

Having done that, you'll be entered for the chance to unleash the LFA yourself. If you win, you'll be flown to the Skip Barber Racing School in Salinas, California for some personal training from ex IndyCar and NASCAR driver and reigning Grand-Am champion Scott Pruett, behind the wheel of an LFA. The contest ends August 21, and of course the odds are long, but since you'll be on Facebook anyway... and, come on, have you heard the LFA? If you need a reminder, you'll find one in the video below.
Continue reading Lexus launches "Unleash The LFA" contest [w/video]

Lexus launches "Unleash The LFA" contest [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 07:58:00 EST. Episode #293 of the Autoblog Podcast is here, and this week Dan and Zach are joined by AOL Autos Editor-in-Chief David Kiley to talk about the possibility of an aluminum-bodied Ford F-150, Joel Ewanick's acrimonious departure from GM, the 2014 Mazda6 we've recently seen images of, and the modern Japanese supercar, the Lexus LFA, versus the original Japanese supercar, the Acura NSX. Your questions and comments power the end of the 'cast, and for those of you who hung with us live on our UStream channel, thanks for taking the time. Keep reading for our Q&A module for you to scroll through and follow along, too.
There's a slice of yesterday and a slice of tomorrow in the latest episode of Motor Trend's Head 2 Head. Jonny Lieberman takes the captain's chairs in the Acura NSX, a sports car whose praises are still being sung as if by Greek chorus 21 years after its introduction, and the Lexus LFA, a kinetic banshee whose V10 wailing has seemingly reawakened the moribund Japanese supercar industry.

On top of the driving, Lieberman gives a lesson in the details that behind each coupe's development and the finer technological points that help define each car. We could tell you more, but that would cheat you out of a good show. Oh, and Ayrton Senna makes a cameo. Have a watch below.
Continue reading Motor Trend compares Lexus LFA to original Acura NSX

Motor Trend compares Lexus LFA to original Acura NSX originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 19:57:00 EST.
Yes, it does seem sort of strange to see a prototype Lexus LFA testing on the Nürburgring just as we're hearing reports that the car is nearly sold out. But just because the original supply of 500 cars has been depleted doesn't mean Lexus isn't working on some sort of derivative or last hurrah (our spy shooter friends suggest the car could wear a "Final Edition" designation).

This prototype, painted in a decidedly cool blue, looks a lot like the Nürburgring Edition LFA that we saw last year, albeit with a few tweaks. Most noticeably, the center-mounted tri-exhaust out back has been removed in favor of two dual-exhaust ports below each of the taillamps. A larger rear diffuser has been added, and another inlet has been added to the hood to help with airflow to the engine.

Given all the breathing work done to the 4.8-liter V10, we're guessing that the car seen here offers a fair bit more than the 552 horsepower found in the standard LFA. How much more? Hopefully Lexus will give us a chance to find out.
Radical Lexus LFA Final Edition rounds the 'Ring originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 13:28:00 EST.
Fancy yourself a $375,000 Lexus supercar? Better hurry - according to TheDetroitBureau.com, only a small handful of LFA units are left.

"The supply is down to single digits," Lexus' U.S. vice president of sales, Tim Morrison, told the Bureau. Of the original 500 cars made, only about 200 came to the States, with most of the cars being sold in places like California and Florida.

Despite a rumor here and there, Lexus told TheDetroitBureau.com that "there are no plans for a replacement." The LFA is perhaps the most un-Lexus Lexus that's ever existed, and unless something else just as crazy comes along, it'll certainly be a rare collector's item in decades to come.

So to all you would-be-supercar owners: Get 'em while they're hot.
Lexus LFA almost completely sold out originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Jun 2012 10:45:00 EST.
Automobile Magazine scribe Jason Cammisa was sent into the desert to referee four carbon-fiber-bodied wild animals fighting it out over the quarter mile: the V8 McLaren MP4-12C, the V10 Lexus LFA, the V12 Lamborghini Aventador and the W16 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. It's a tough job, innit?

The Head 2 Head race was run elimination style, with the winner of each two-up challenge facing the next devil up the totem pole. Although you might not have any doubts about the eventual victor, how each of these supercars fared is good watching. See all the screaming for yourself in the video below.
Continue reading Bugatti Veyron, Lexus LFA, McLaren MP4-12C and Lambo Aventador in 1/4-mile shootout... who wins?

Bugatti Veyron, Lexus LFA, McLaren MP4-12C and Lambo Aventador in 1/4-mile shootout... who wins? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 May 2012 12:31:00 EST. Toyota and Lexus are gearing up for this year's Nüburgring 24 Hours. The two companies plan to take to the track with a total of five entries, including four Toyota GT 86 race cars and one Lexus LFA. Prepped by factory tuner Gazoo Racing, the LFA will compete in the SP8 class while two of the GT 86 models will go fender-to-fender in the SP3 class. Those will be joined by two more GT 86 racers built by Toyota Motorsport and competing under the Toyota Swiss Racing Team banner in the V3 class for production vehicles.

Gazoo Racing has already had a little fun at the Nüburgring this year. While competing at two shorter events at the legendary track, the LFA took home two wins. This year's 24-hour endurance race kicks off this weekend, May 17-20. The even will be streamed online here and here. Scroll down for the quick press release.
Continue reading Toyota GT 86, Lexus LFA racers ready for Nürburgring 24 Hours

Toyota GT 86, Lexus LFA racers ready for Nürburgring 24 Hours originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 May 2012 17:30:00 EST.
Give a Lexus LFA to an auto journalist and there's going to be an attempt to drift it. Give that same LFA to the gents at Blendtec and they're likely to see if it, or at least a piece of it, will blend. Then turn that LFA over to Tony Hawk to use for his birthday and he will, naturally, line the thing up outside of his office and see if he can ollie it.

Sure, he had the help of a generous ramp, but we can't blame him. The LFA is $375,000 of sensitive parts that wouldn't react well, nor inexpensively, to flying skateboard trucks. Scroll down to see the 44-year-old Hawk do what he does best.
Continue reading Tony Hawk jumps Lexus LFA on skateboard

Tony Hawk jumps Lexus LFA on skateboard originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 May 2012 16:59:00 EST.
Many countries have produced supercars with price tags that dip into the six figures, but that rare breed of exotic that fetches upwards of a quarter million is all but completely exclusive to Europe: Ferrari, Lamborghini and Pagani out of Italy, Bugatti from France, McLaren and higher-end Aston Martin models of Britain, top-of-the-line Porsche offerings from Germany, Koenigsegg of Sweden and so on. That's what makes the Lexus LFA so exceptional. It extends beyond the Acura NSX and the Nissan GT-R that previously defined the top end of Japanese supercars and joins its European rivals at the very top of the market. But that, we're reading, is only the beginning.

According to a shadowy anonymous source cornered by AutoGuide, Toyota is already working on a successor to the LFA, and their mole says the car will be even more exotic, more powerful and more expensive. Just what that entails when the LFA is already limited to 500 examples, packs a 552-horsepower 4.8-liter V10 and costs $375,000 has us conjuring up images of an animé take on the Bugatti Veyron. AG suggests the car could nudge the million-dollar mark with production limited to just 100 examples.

Could it be a production version of the LF-LC concept? It's probably too early to tell. In fact, we're going to go ahead and take this entire rumor with a few shakers-worth of salt and advise you to consider doing the same.
Toyota working on even more exotic followup to Lexus LFA? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Apr 2012 17:31:00 EST.
We can attest to the joys of driving the Lexus LFA, having spent several days this past fall becoming addicted to the 4.8-liter V10 and race-bred suspension. We aren't the only ones who have developed an affection for the $400,000 Lexus supercar, though. Alex Wurz, former Formula 1 driver and two-time Le Mans winner, recently got behind the wheel of the LFA and seemed duly impressed.

Not one to just take the LFA out for a lazy drive, Wurz makes proper use of all 552 horsepower and 9,000 rpm running the Estoril Circuit in Portugal. After a few laps of pushing the supercar around the track, Wurz heaps praise on the LFA for its super-aggressive looks, neutral handling, and the sound of the downshifts from the V10.

If you want to see a video of the Lexus LFA being driven the way it was intended, then hit the jump and turn up your speakers.
Continue reading Alex Wurz gets behind the wheel of the Lexus LFA

Alex Wurz gets behind the wheel of the Lexus LFA originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 26 Feb 2012 20:01:00 EST.
