Automobile Magazine scribe Jason Cammisa was sent into the desert to referee four carbon-fiber-bodied wild animals fighting it out over the quarter mile: the V8 McLaren MP4-12C, the V10 Lexus LFA, the V12 Lamborghini Aventador and the W16 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. It's a tough job, innit?

The Head 2 Head race was run elimination style, with the winner of each two-up challenge facing the next devil up the totem pole. Although you might not have any doubts about the eventual victor, how each of these supercars fared is good watching. See all the screaming for yourself in the video below.
Continue reading Bugatti Veyron, Lexus LFA, McLaren MP4-12C and Lambo Aventador in 1/4-mile shootout... who wins?

Bugatti Veyron, Lexus LFA, McLaren MP4-12C and Lambo Aventador in 1/4-mile shootout... who wins? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 May 2012 12:31:00 EST. Toyota and Lexus are gearing up for this year's Nüburgring 24 Hours. The two companies plan to take to the track with a total of five entries, including four Toyota GT 86 race cars and one Lexus LFA. Prepped by factory tuner Gazoo Racing, the LFA will compete in the SP8 class while two of the GT 86 models will go fender-to-fender in the SP3 class. Those will be joined by two more GT 86 racers built by Toyota Motorsport and competing under the Toyota Swiss Racing Team banner in the V3 class for production vehicles.

Gazoo Racing has already had a little fun at the Nüburgring this year. While competing at two shorter events at the legendary track, the LFA took home two wins. This year's 24-hour endurance race kicks off this weekend, May 17-20. The even will be streamed online here and here. Scroll down for the quick press release.
Continue reading Toyota GT 86, Lexus LFA racers ready for Nürburgring 24 Hours

Toyota GT 86, Lexus LFA racers ready for Nürburgring 24 Hours originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 May 2012 17:30:00 EST.
Give a Lexus LFA to an auto journalist and there's going to be an attempt to drift it. Give that same LFA to the gents at Blendtec and they're likely to see if it, or at least a piece of it, will blend. Then turn that LFA over to Tony Hawk to use for his birthday and he will, naturally, line the thing up outside of his office and see if he can ollie it.

Sure, he had the help of a generous ramp, but we can't blame him. The LFA is $375,000 of sensitive parts that wouldn't react well, nor inexpensively, to flying skateboard trucks. Scroll down to see the 44-year-old Hawk do what he does best.
Continue reading Tony Hawk jumps Lexus LFA on skateboard

Tony Hawk jumps Lexus LFA on skateboard originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 May 2012 16:59:00 EST.
Many countries have produced supercars with price tags that dip into the six figures, but that rare breed of exotic that fetches upwards of a quarter million is all but completely exclusive to Europe: Ferrari, Lamborghini and Pagani out of Italy, Bugatti from France, McLaren and higher-end Aston Martin models of Britain, top-of-the-line Porsche offerings from Germany, Koenigsegg of Sweden and so on. That's what makes the Lexus LFA so exceptional. It extends beyond the Acura NSX and the Nissan GT-R that previously defined the top end of Japanese supercars and joins its European rivals at the very top of the market. But that, we're reading, is only the beginning.

According to a shadowy anonymous source cornered by AutoGuide, Toyota is already working on a successor to the LFA, and their mole says the car will be even more exotic, more powerful and more expensive. Just what that entails when the LFA is already limited to 500 examples, packs a 552-horsepower 4.8-liter V10 and costs $375,000 has us conjuring up images of an animé take on the Bugatti Veyron. AG suggests the car could nudge the million-dollar mark with production limited to just 100 examples.

Could it be a production version of the LF-LC concept? It's probably too early to tell. In fact, we're going to go ahead and take this entire rumor with a few shakers-worth of salt and advise you to consider doing the same.
Toyota working on even more exotic followup to Lexus LFA? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Apr 2012 17:31:00 EST.
We can attest to the joys of driving the Lexus LFA, having spent several days this past fall becoming addicted to the 4.8-liter V10 and race-bred suspension. We aren't the only ones who have developed an affection for the $400,000 Lexus supercar, though. Alex Wurz, former Formula 1 driver and two-time Le Mans winner, recently got behind the wheel of the LFA and seemed duly impressed.

Not one to just take the LFA out for a lazy drive, Wurz makes proper use of all 552 horsepower and 9,000 rpm running the Estoril Circuit in Portugal. After a few laps of pushing the supercar around the track, Wurz heaps praise on the LFA for its super-aggressive looks, neutral handling, and the sound of the downshifts from the V10.

Last we checked, there were fewer than 90 Lexus LFA models in the United States. So imagine our surprise to find not one, not two, but four of the automaker's carbon-fiber exotics parked under the lights in the Lexus booth at the Chicago Auto Show.

Normally, when four of the same models occupy the same stage it's hardly news. However, this quartet of Lexii represents nearly five percent of all LFA models on our shore. Five percent. To put that in perspective, if five percent of Toyota Camry models sold last year were parked in the Toyota booth there would be about 15,000 sedans crammed onto the carpet.

Unexpected appearances aside, the 40-cylinder assembly (with a retail value of more than $1.5 million) gave us the perfect opportunity to see the LFA in red, black and yellow - with an assortment of factory wheels and finishes. And before you make a crack about the LFA not selling, understand these are all customer cars. In fact, one even has an EZPass still in its window. Check out our extensive gallery and let us know which is your next... um, lottery car.
Lexus plays us like a fiddle with its LFA quartet originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 19:01:00 EST.
If top-down motoring is your cup of tea, there are few droptops that could elicit as many smiles per sun-drenched hour than the long-rumored Lexus LFA Roadster. We first saw the V10-powered 552-horsepower machine at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, but the automaker has kept its lips firmly sealed on the potential of a production version since that showing.

Interestingly enough, though, it appears that Toyota's luxury division may not be done trotting proproduction LFA Roadsters around the auto show circuit. As can be seen in the video after the break, the Lexus droptop stunner made an appearance at the most recent Tokyo Auto Salon, where it took part in an exhibition run for the D1GP Kick Off Drift event.

Here's where things get a little murky. We have no idea if this is a factory-made LFA Roadster - it could be a custom job, or it could be the same exact car Lexus showed off in Detroit four years ago, albeit wearing a new coat of white paint and an unfortunate rollbar. Whatever the case, you can see exactly how easily the V10-powered machine can smoke its rear tires after the break.

Special Bonus: Watch now and you'll see extra drifting footage of a Toyota GT 86!
Continue reading Lexus LFA Roadster makes appearance at Japanese drift event

Lexus LFA Roadster makes appearance at Japanese drift event originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 19:28:00 EST.
When society finally crumbles and the human race vanishes from the face of the Earth, the cockroaches will still be passing around certain automotive rumors. Their antennae will twitch with whispers of an independent-rear-suspension Mustang and a mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette. Now it appears that they'll have a new story to chew on. The rumor of the V10-powered Lexus GS simply refuses to die off. Autocar reports that Lexus has its eye on crafting a BMW M5 fighter, and that the vehicle will boast none other than aversion of the snarling V10 found at the heart of the Lexus LFA.

Don't get us wrong. The mere thought sends our saliva glands into overdrive, even if hopped-up GS would come packing 4.6 liters instead of 4.8 as Autocar suggests. The report claims that the reduced displacement would yield around 450 horsepower. Don't get too excited, though. All of this rumor-stoking appears to be based on the sole fact that shadowy figures inside Lexus have said that the company "would love" to build a high-performance V8. That's far from being carved in stone.
The LFA-powered Lexus GS rumor that won't die originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 21 Nov 2011 18:33:00 EST.
The chief executives of any two companies will inherently have something in common to share. All the more so for the CEOs of automakers, never mind how big or how small. But Akio Toyoda and Ulrich Bez share more than job descriptions. The heads of Toyota and Aston Martin also share a passion for motorsports and actively race themselves.

It's a relationship helped broker the deal to turn the Toyota iQ into the Aston Martin Cygnet. It's one that has seen not only their teams but they themselves compete against each other in sports car racing. It's also one that only stands to intensify next season in endurance racing when both field LMP1 racers. But before that happens, the two pencil-pushers turned hot shoes swapped cars at the Nürburgring, Toyoda taking to the wheel of the Aston Martin V12 Zagato, and Bez piloting the Lexus LFA. Follow the jump to watch the video footage.
Continue reading Aston Martin, Toyota CEOs swap race cars at Nürburgring

Aston Martin, Toyota CEOs swap race cars at Nürburgring originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Nov 2011 08:29:00 EST.
It's not often that a mainstream automaker sets its sights on building a world-class supercar, but a few standout examples come to mind: cars like the Acura NSX, the Ford GT, the Dodge Viper, and the Lexus LFA.

Of course, none of these projects simply materialized overnight. Each took years of development, fine-tuning, tweaking and, in the case of the LFA, going back to the drawing board. Toyota spent years on the car's development and put some of its best personnel on the job. Lexus has now documented the LFA's development in a ten-minute video.

Toyota was once an automaker known for its two-door sportscars and coupes. There was the Celica. There was the Supra. There was the Lexus SC. But while those have all long since departed, the Japanese auto giant is clawing its way back to the territory it once owned.

The Lexus LFA is one heck of a first salvo, and the FT-86 is around the corner. There's a world of space between those models, though, and according to the latest reports, Toyota is planning to fill that space, too.

Rumor has it that, while not officially sanctioned, a team of engineers is working on a rear-drive successor to the Supra, though where the project stands and what future it may have remain big question marks. A second front-drive luxury hybrid coupe is also tipped to be in the works from Lexus, adopting much of its underpinnings from the CT200h.

Before those arrive, though, we look upwards to the LFA. The convertible version has reportedly been postponed if not axed entirely, but word has it that a special edition is to be presented at and named for the Tokyo Motor Show. The model would reportedly be distinguished by bare carbon-fiber panels for the roof and spoiler and a significant price premium over the stock model.
Toyota coupe range expanding with Supra successor, CT200h coupe, LFA Tokyo edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 15:30:00 EST.
The Interwebs were recently aflutter with rumors that Lexus had set a new Nürburgring production car record with its LFA supercar. The Japanese automaker has stepped forward to lend credence those rumors... by producing an official video of the record-breaking 7:14.64 run. That figure represents a mighty quick 20.6-kilometer jaunt, besting efforts put forth by a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Nissan GT-R and even a Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Lexus used an even more limited-edition version of its already limited LFA known as the Nürburgring Edition. Only 50 examples are to be built, which represents 1/10th of total planned LFA production. The differences on this limited, limited-edition car can be found in the added aero bits, track-tuned suspension, custom wheels and an extra 11 horsepower. That extra oomph brings total power up to 563 horses, compared to the "standard" car's 552.

That power boost is clearly enough to push the LFA around the track more quickly than any production car has gone before. However, the inquisitive minds at The Truth About Cars bring up a good point with regards to "production car" records set on the 'Ring. Lexus only built 500 examples of the LFA, and just 50 of those are Nürburgring Edition cars. Should we consider that small production run enough for the car to qualify? If so, why can't we consider the times produced by a pair of Radical entries and a Gumpert Apollo Sport as part of the production class? If we do, then the LFA's time would actually fall to fourth. None of the aforementioned vehicles are mass-market units, but they are sold in the States, if in very limited numbers.

Still, we don't want to take anything away from Lexus on a truly amazing blast around this famed German circuit. Click past the jump to watch the video ride-along for yourself.
Continue reading Lexus confirms LFA Nürburgring record with new footage

Lexus confirms LFA Nürburgring record with new footage originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 12:30:00 EST.
The web is afire with news that Lexus has managed to demolish the standing production-car record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The news comes courtesy of EVO Magazine's own Chris Harris and Lexus itself via the miracle of Twitter. Lexus test driver Akira Iida reportedly managed to twist the LFA Nürburgring Edition around the infamous circuit in 7:14. If true, that time puts the carbon-fiber exotic four-seconds ahead of the previous production-car champion, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, at 7:18, and it puts the LFA Nürburgring Edition in the top five quickest vehicles to ever run the track.

Impressive.

We'll keep you posted with more information as Lexus releases details on the run. Here's hoping they had the video cameras rolling while they were out laying waste to the Green Hell.
Lexus LFA Nürburgring Package smashes Nordschliefe production record with 7:14 lap originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 09:29:00 EST.
We can always rely on the good people at Motor Trend to stir up some genuine jealousy thanks to their excellently crafted videos. The team recently got their hands on the Lexus LFA and took the V10 monster out to an abandoned Marine base for a little frolicking in the wide-open spaces. They were kind enough to bring the video crew along for the ride, and the finished result is a lengthy clip that features plenty of sideways action without any prattling voice overs. Unfortunately, we don't get to hear that sinister engine wail or the tires beg for mercy. The whole shindig instead gets set to an impressively dramatic soundtrack.

Still, we'll never complain at the chance to watch the LFA turn its high-dollar wheels in anger. Odds are we'll get another look at the car and find out what the MT gurus thought soon enough. Hit the jump to check out the video clip for yourself in all of its high-definition glory.
Continue reading Motor Trend gets sideways with Lexus LFA

Motor Trend gets sideways with Lexus LFA originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 18:57:00 EST. If you have an issue with the fact that Lexus is going to make you lease an LFA instead of letting you outright buy the vehicle, we've got good news for you. Sort of. Herb Chambers Lexus in Sharon, MA is selling one of the carbon-fiber supercars for some very wealthy, very lucky individual to have and to hold as their own.

What's the hitch? Unsurprisingly, there are a couple of them. We spoke with the dealer, and according to them, before the title changes hands, the new owner will need to sign a first right of refusal contract with Lexus. If the buyer takes the car home and decides to sell it in the first two years, the automaker gets dibs on buying the car back. (Before you cry foul, note that Ferrari has made similar stipulations in hopes of keeping flipping and price gouging on its hot new models for some time now).

The supercar is dipped in sexy copper (Pearl Brown?) paint with a matching saddle interior, and there are a mere six miles on the clock. According to the dealer, the original orderer of the car came in to inspect it, got a walk-around with Lexus' LFA-specific expert who was on-hand to assist, briefly drove it and then decided he would let someone else purchase it.

So... how much will the sales team at Herb Chambers ask for the pleasure of ownership? How does $389,900 grab you? At that price, by our calculations, the would-be buyer is basically paying Lexus 24 months of lease payments up front, plus the balloon payment at the end to buy the car outright. Still interested?
Bradley Hasemeyer has driven some unique vehicles. We've seen him take the helm of a Tango EV, the dolphin-shaped Seabreacher and the electric Z-Kart. Now, Hasemeyer gets behind the wheel of a vehicle that hits a little closer to our Autoblog hearts, the Lexus LFA.

Don't expect a smoky, sideways review of the car - after all, this is Translogic, and the gist is to dive into the technology behind the machine. What you can expect, though, is a well-made video filled with great information... and that's exactly what's waiting for you after the jump.
Continue reading Lexus LFA gets broken down by Translogic

Lexus LFA gets broken down by Translogic originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 19:25:00 EST.
Even amidst the disastrous situation on their island nation, the Japanese are showing no signs of slowing down. At least, not when it comes to its supercars. Honda was recently reported to be forging ahead with on-again, off-again plans to resurrect its NSX supercar, Nissan is hard at work on the new GT-R and now Toyota is said to be working on a new version of the Lexus LFA.

While the handle being used in the interim might suggest a completely new successor, rumor has it that an LFA II is being developed as a variant of the existing model. Following in the footsteps of the above-pictured Nürburgring package, Japan's Best Car says that the so-called LFA II is expected to push the performance envelope even further. Just what that will entail - or for that matter, if it will come to fruition at all - remains to be seen, but if there's any truth to the reports, we certainly applaud the company's spirit.
Lexus working on even hotter LFA II? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 13:01:00 EST.
Life is tough, ain't it? We pay to see professional racing drivers hurtling around at breakneck speeds on the race track, but then give them tickets and even revoke their licenses for doing what they do best once off the race track. We see it all the time. Lewis Hamilton has run into his share of trouble. So has Danica Patrick. David Coulthard even got one during a Formula One demonstration on public streets. Even F1 team principals like Ross Brawn and Ron Dennis have run afoul of speed limits. And now, Kyle Busch is having his turn.

The front-running NASCAR driver was reportedly busted in Mooresville, North Carolina driving a yellow Lexus LFA supercar at 128 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone. Carry the one, divide by pi... that's nearly three times the posted limit. So did he get arrested and carted off to jail on the spot like the rest of us would? Not quite, but he did receive a citation and will have to answer for his illegal behavior, and could stand to lose his license. Fortunately, NASCAR doesn't require its drivers to have a valid state license in order to race.

The LFA was reportedly on loan to Busch from Lexus, whose parent company's Toyota stock cars he drives in NASCAR. This wasn't the first time Busch has been busted for reckless driving in public, having pleaded guilty to performing a burnout in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in Virginia back in 2006, and cited for going 55 in a 35 zone in 2008 in the same Irdell County, NC, where he was busted again yesterday.

For his part, Busch has apologized for the incident and reportedly acted courteously towards law enforcement throughout the ordeal.
Kyle Busch busted doing 128 mph while test-driving Lexus LFA originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 May 2011 10:29:00 EST. Lexus UK finally has its first LFA on the Queen's home turf. Rather than take it on a glam tour by propping it up in shiny showrooms, Lexus is taking it to the track. It's also bringing along a camera to record the sights and sounds that come along with the two-door supercar.

Recently, the LFA lined up at the Bruntingthorpe Proving Grounds alongside its sibling, the Lexus IS F and both were put through the requisite paces. Unfortunately for the IS F, however, its dulcet exhaust tone was drowned out by the banshee wail spewed forth from the tri-tipped rear of the LFA. Click past the jump to revel in the noise.
Continue reading Lexus lines up LFA against IS F on UK track

Lexus lines up LFA against IS F on UK track originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 May 2011 19:59:00 EST.
If you were one of the many automotive enthusiasts to shed a tear when it became known that Japan's Best Motoring set off for the giant junkyard in the sky, we have a little piece of good news to cheer you up: there's one final track battle for your viewing pleasure.

Even better news: Best Motoring went out with a bang, pitting the Lexus LFA up against such performance benchmarks as the Nissan GT-R, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Porsche 911 GT2 RS and Ferrari F430 GT3.

Yes, there are two almost-race-cars in the mix there along with three machines intended solely for the street, but it doesn't really matter. All such contests should be taken with a grain of salt anyway.

When it's all said and done, what we have here are five mouth-watering supercars on a track together being driven in anger. Want to know how it all shakes out? Check out the video after the break.
Continue reading Final Best Motoring battle pits LFA against GT-R, ZR1, 911 GT2 RS and F430 GT3

Final Best Motoring battle pits LFA against GT-R, ZR1, 911 GT2 RS and F430 GT3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 May 2011 19:57:00 EST.
