Jay Leno upgrades his 1906 Stanley Steamer Vanderbilt Cup Racer

Jay Leno has a special place in his heart for steam power. The comedian has a collection of vintage vehicles that have more in common with a classic train than a modern car, and of those, his 1906 Stanley Steamer seems to be one of his favorites.

In 2007, the Stanley suffered a bit of a catastrophic failure, and Leno and his team of steam mechanics have been working to get the vehicle back into ship shape ever since. Of course, in Leno's vocabulary, "ship shape" means better than ever. The Stanley now wears hydraulic drum brakes from a Jaguar XK120 instead of the manual drums found on the original Steamer.

The crew also worked in a set of electric fuel pumps and replaced the acetylene headlights and oil tail lamps with electric versions. The team also managed to bump up the horsepower. The Steamer originally cruised along with a 23-inch boiler, but Leno had a new 30-inch boiler made and installed. It took his shop 26 tries to design boiler baffles that could accurately and evenly spread heat across the full surface, but now Leno has the equivalent of a hot rod Steamer. Pure awesomeness. Joe Grace, Fiat Vehicle Line Executive, swung by Jay Leno's garage with the brand's new 500 Abarth for a little history lesson and a quick walk around. Here in the States, it's easy to forget that Karl Abarth, the man behind the Fiat tuning division, was as driven as they come when pushing the performance envelope. Abarth got his start racing motorcycles before turning his eye to four-wheeled prototypes and aftermarket performance, and his list of lifelong achievements is as lengthy as it is varied. Abarth was our kind of guy.

Grace took the time to show Leno exactly what makes the 500 Abarth so different from the comedian's own pint-sized hatchback, including its turbocharged, 1.4-liter four-cylinder good for 160 horsepower, along with its unique aesthetics and performance-oriented suspension and exhaust. Is the 500 Abarth cool? Sure. Is it as cool as Karl Abarth racing a steam locomotive with a sidecar motorcycle? We think not. Hit the jump to check the video for yourself.

Jay Leno has driven 11,000 miles in his Chevy Volt, still hasn't bought gas

Here's a fun bit of trivia: Jay Leno has driven his Chevrolet Volt nearly 11,000 miles and doesn't have a single gas station receipt to show for it. According to The New York Times Wheels blog, Leno has had his plug-in for 11 months and, as he told them, "I've never had to put gas in it yet... They gave it to me with a full tank of gas. I've used less than half of that."

Given that Leno has an entire fleet of gas-swilling rides in his garage, he can just take the Volt out whenever he knows he can get to Point B and back without refueling. You have to be kind of careful to put 11,000 miles on a Volt without ever going more than 40 miles (plus or minus) at a stretch. Luckily, Leno said his commute is less than 35 miles a day, and so he uses the Volt as his daily driver. He then makes a fairly good joke at the expense of General Motors, which you can read here.

The Lamborghini Aventador stands to be the new supercar king. For starters, every body part and component is completely new, from the 6.5-liter V12 boasting 700 horsepower to the light-weight carbon fiber monocoque. We're enthralled, but what about enthusiast royalty like Jay Leno?

Lamborghini President Stephan Winkelmann took to the road to bring the Aventador to Leno, and the late night talk show host was thoroughly impressed. Winkelmann talks about how new and impressive the Aventador is, with its 0-60 time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 217 miles per hour. Research and Development Director Maurizio Reggiani followed with an even more in-depth dive into what makes the Aventador special, with Reggiani giving Leno a tour of the Aventador using a body-free version of the Italian exotic.

Proving yet again that there's simply nothing in the automotive world that comedian, late night talk show host and genuinely nice guy Jay Leno can't get his hands on is the video you'll see after the break.

This week, Jay welcomes Horatio Pagani into his garage, and the man who heads his own eponymous automaker brought along a brand spankin' new Huayra for show-and-tell. Perhaps best of all (since we obviously didn't get to drive it ourselves), we now know the proper way to say Huayra: Why-ra.

Pagani tells us that, while the Zonda was inspired by Le Mans racing cars, the Huayra draws its inspiration from the moment an aircraft leaves the tarmac and begins to take flight. We have to admit, from the way the doors open like the portal into an aircraft to the wing-like splitters at the rear and the airfoil-shaped side mirrors, we can see clear evidence of aeronautical design in the Huayra.

That said, it's impossible to truly appreciate how special this latest Pagani is until you gaze upon its exquisitely crafted interior. Leather, bare aluminum and carbon fiber surround the driver and passenger in what we think may be the most impressive single element of the Huayra's look and feel. Well, that and those amazing wheel hubs. Oh, and the sound it makes when the turbochargers kick in. Guess the entire thing is pretty impressive, eh?

Jay Leno checks out some strange and beautiful American things at Pebble

Jay Leno always gets to take his turn behind the wheels of lots of big, fast, beautiful things that make the enthusiast get all choked up with high-horsepower emotion and exhaust gasses. But he can also check out things that are just weird and beautiful without actually driving - and in these two cases, those things are American.

There are two videos after the jump from last week's Pebble Beach festivities in Monterey, California - one of the 1960 Plymouth XNR Concept designed by Karim Eddie but named for powerhouse designer Virgil Exner. Long, red and asymmetrical and powered by a Valiant engine, there's only one, which is only right.

The other vid is of Edsel Ford's 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster. Certainly one of the most compelling cars of the entire weekend, Jay takes his time with Edsel Ford's grandson and Pebble concours judge Ken Gross to dive into the speedster's creation and restoration. Jay Leno and GM design boss Ed Welburn peruse the Cadillac Ciel concept

The Cadillac Ciel concept is a convertible showstopper that wowed crowds at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Not surprisingly, Jay Leno managed to secure some talking time with General Motors VP of Global Design Ed Wellburn, and the two chatted about the ultimate Art and Science-mobile while Leno got a look at some of its features.

The Ciel concept is powered by a 425-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that's paired with a lithium-ion battery pack powering an electric motor. Basically, it's one of the best-looking hybrid vehicles on the planet at the moment, and it's even more intriguing when Wellburn shows off the rear power suicide doors.

It may be wearing a different badge, but Cadillac has seemingly built a modern-day homage to the fourth-generation Lincoln Continental. Click past the jump to see what we're talking about.

Jay Leno teaches us about the Bugatti Type 51

Jay Leno seems to own just about every car he's ever desired, but not even the late-night talk show host has a Bugatti Type 51. So we're sure it was with great anticipation that Mr. Leno took delivery of a gorgeous, race-ready Type 51 for a few minutes in his envy-inducing garage.

Beyond the jump is the latest installment of Jay's garage series. Leno is admittedly very fond of Bugatti models, and he seems to know an awful lot about the Type 51. He talks up the twin overhead cam engine, shows off it's start-up process (it's got more steps than Ikea furniture assembly) and demonstrates one of the sweetest engine sounds we've ever heard.

Fiat 500 Prima Edizione rolls into Jay Leno's Garage

Most automobiles on this planet find their rubber resting on the clean floor of Jay Leno's garage at some point in their life. The latest to get the Big Dog denim treatment is the Fiat 500, and Chrysler arrived in Burbank, California with a one-of-500 Prima Edizione just for the occasion. Jay lines the car up alongside his own 1937 Fiat Topolino, which looks like a toy car by comparison, albeit a rather handsome one at that.

Leno has enough room for more than the limited-edition 500, however, and two other Fiat subcompacts get camera time. One is the 500C, which receives a brief mention while the other is a Road Race Motorsports-prepped 500 hardtop that captures quite a bit more of Leno's attention.

Jay takes both the Prima Edizione and the Road Race Motorsports 500 out for a spin. That means, despite the small subject matter, the clip posted after the jum p is twice as long as the standard Jay Leno video. Still, with all this Fiat cuteness, it's definitely worth your time.

Jay Leno puts Jaguar XKR-S through its paces around the Nurburgring

Jaguar put Jay Leno behind the wheel of the company's newest heathen - the XKR-S - for a handful of quick laps around the fabled Nurburgring, and Leno, thankfully, brought along a production staff to record the occasion.

The comedian was able to squeeze in a few lead-follow laps with Sascha Bert on point and eventually worked his speed up to a best time of 8:41. Not too shabby for a guy who's used to putting along under steam power. It's clear from the clip that Leno holds the Nurburgring to be sacred ground.

Leno doesn't spend too much time pontificating on the merits of the XKR-S. While we're treated to plenty of great shots of the car dancing around the track and the sound of its vicious dual-exhaust, the clip is absent any real driving impressions. Our greedy automotive journalist hands are shaking because we've yet to get seat time in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. A few lucky folks outside of the company have gotten seat time, and it seems video of their excursions serve to make our jealousy meter ping harder into its stop. This time around, it's Jay Leno that's been given quality time with the drop-top exotic. Leno may think he's the first, but someone else beat him to the punch.

It's no surprise, then, that Bugatti has arrived to give Jay an up-close look at the latest super stallion in the stable. Leno spends time chatting with Bugatti's American marketing director John Hill before hitting the roads of Southern California.

Jay Leno talks about ordering his McLaren MP4-12C

Most of us will never know what it's like to order a supercar. Thankfully, we have collector extraordinaire Jay Leno to share the process. Leno is the proud owner of a 2012 McLaren MP4-12C, and he recently discussed how he went about buying his new toy.

Leno says that normally, acquiring the latest exotic can be annoying. Sales associates want to tell you that the car is sold out while also pushing options you may or may not need. Not so with McLaren.

When Leno ordered his MP4-12C, he simply phoned the McLaren office and went through the options list. When doing so, he found a refreshing level of honesty in the person helping him buy the car. Leno said he wanted the carbon ceramic brakes, and the sales associate asked whether Jay would be tracking the car or not. Leno said no, and the salesperson told him he wouldn't need the ceramics, then, as the standard steel brakes were cheaper, lighter and very effective. The associate also informed Leno that the carbon fiber interior accents were merely decorative and offered no weight savings, helping Jay save even more on the bottom line.

All told, it seems Jay Leno is just as smitten with the car as he with McLaren's operation as a whole. The MP4-12C will occupy a space in Leno's giant garage, positioned, we assume, right next to the McLaren F1 he already owns. Before purchasing the MP4-12C, however, Leno took a trip to Woking to see how the car is made. He got some track time, too, which you can watch in the clip posted after the jump.

When we reviewed (and fell in love with) the Morgan 3 Wheeler, we said that deliveries in the United States would start in the first quarter of 2012, though TV personality and car enthusiast Jay Leno would probably get his a bit earlier. And after watching this video of Leno getting his first stint behind the wheel of the 3 Wheeler, we bet he's counting down the days until the open-top beast arrives in his garage.

Leno recently drove the 3 Wheeler and wrote a subsequent review for Wired, having this to say:

You know, when you drive cars like the Bugatti SuperSport or the McLaren, 100 miles per hour feels like 40. When you drive a car like this, 40 miles per hour feels like 200. And that's the fun of it really. You get that wonderful sensation of speed, you're close to the ground - you can scrape your knuckles as you go along. It's sort of... the ultimate motorcycle. It just makes you smile.

Jay Leno's job rules. Besides earning him enough scratch to buy and maintain just about anything he feels like in his now-famous garage, auto manufacturers are seemingly more than willing to jet him around the globe to sample their cars.

This time, it's the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle, the arched-roof recipient of a top-to-bottom redesign. To give the story a little historical context, Leno drives VW's latest back-to-back with a 1938 Beetle, the oldest in existence. Needless to say, Jay was duly impressed with both cars (bonus points for anyone who can correctly tell us how many times he says "iconic"), but, and here's a shocker, Leno figures he'd rather drive the 2012 model on a daily basis. It would be great to have a garage so large that entire sections were devoted to specific makes or models. Jay Leno has such a place, and, as befitting one of the best-known car junkies in the world, one section of his Big Dog Garage is home to nothing but Duesenbergs.

In case you're not familiar with the marque, the Duesenberg was (and still is by some) regarded as the absolute pinnacle of automotive engineering. One vehicle in particular has an interesting story, as it was discovered unrestored in a Manhattan garage. Suffice it to say - and you knew this was coming, right? - it's a Duesy.

This 1931 Duesenberg Model J was parked in New York City with just a few thousand miles on the odometer. The original owner's son attempted to restore the car sometime in the 1950s, but the car was returned to its parking spot, and left to rot. After that, Leno became the second owner when he acquired the car in 2005.

It may have come to him as the last original owner, unrestored Duesy, but per Jay, the car was too trashed to be left in that condition. So, the Model J underwent a complete restoration, and is now in better shape than when it was originally parked in that Manhattan garage. Jay Leno's Garage managed to pull a very special interview this week with Lee Iacocca, the legendary American businessman credited with fathering the original Ford Mustang and with bringing Chrysler back from the brink in the 1980s. The interview rehashes Iacocca's success with the Mustang and direct involvement with the creation of Carroll Shelby's first cars in the '60s.

The video concludes with a walkaround and test drive of the Lee Iacocca 45th Anniversary Mustang, a (very) limited edition 400-horsepower supercharged tribute to the father of the Mustang. Leno even sneaks in a burnout in Lido's personal example. Check it out after the jump. Top tip, Brent!

A few years back, we wrote about the Drag Tag simulator setup in Australia. It allows you to use your own car in a virtual environment that simulates hundreds of locations. Time of day and weather conditions can change and the whole experience sounds like a fun way to waste a few hours. Jay Leno was recently paid a visit by the Tag simulator crew and they brought an example of their setup into Leno's garage.

With his yellow Chevrolet Corvette Z06 strapped into the dyno, Jay takes a tour of the simulators various tracks and driving conditions. The rolling road allows Leno to push the car as hard as he pleases with no legal or safety repercussions.

A machine makes sure air is blowing into the front of the car while an extractor pulls gases from the rear. It's a slick setup that would look great bolted into the floor of the Autoblog garage. Jay Leno today gives us a rare glimpse into the Lamborghini Section of his Big Dog Garage, where his two Miuras share space with a Countach and an Espada. Must be nice, eh? As much as we love those Italian steeds, the subject of today's visit to the garage is the awesome, flat black, fighter jet-inspired Reventón.

Specifically, we're ogling number 007 of 20 Reventón supercars that Lamborghini produced after the tremendous reception the car received after being introduced at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. All 20 of these cars were delivered to paying customers, so the only way to get one now is to go out on the open market... and, for what it's worth, 007 is for sale.

Because this car is privately owned (and not by Jay), the late night comedian and automotive enthusiast went a bit easy on it, eschewing burnouts for rolling full-throttle starts. No matter, the sound from that 650-horsepower 6.5-liter V12 engine is plenty intoxicating, and judging by how it jets away from the camera car, it's plenty fast. Do you have a "Bentley Section" in your garage? You probably have an "Oil Stain Wing" and possibly a "Random Pile of Parts Vestibule" but we're willing to bet the majority of you don't have a whole portion of your garage dedicated to one specific marque. Among many things, that's what separates Jay Leno from the rest of us peons and he's also utilizing his Bentley Section to play host to a new member from the First Family of Crewe: the 2011 Bentley Mulsanne.

Leno looks the luxosedan over in the confines of his Big Dog Garage before hitting the surrounding Southern California streets, and the video is waiting for you just past the jump.
