One of the many reasons we love Jay Leno's Garage is the depth of the comedian's collection and his appreciation for the unappreciated. Most men of his financial and social standing with even a passing interest in automobiles would occupy their driveways with six- and seven-figure high performance and luxury cars - they wouldn't even know what something like this 1966 Volga GAZ-21 is, let alone offer it a spot in their garage mahal.

Yet here is Leno, pouring over this ex-KGB staff car in detail and trying on his best labored Russian accent, genuinely fascinated by this small sedan. With a three-on-the-tree, primitive leaf-spring suspension and 95 horsepower from its 2.5-liter four-cylinder, this unrestored sedan - still riding on made-in-USSR tires - doesn't sound terribly exciting on paper, but Jay does a good job of outlining its features and putting it into historical context. He even tells a brief-but-amusing yarn about driving the car through Russian immigrant neighborhoods in the Los Angeles area. Learn more about this Cold War curiosity by scrolling below to watch the video.
Continue reading 1966 Volga GAZ-21 pops into Jay Leno's Garage

1966 Volga GAZ-21 pops into Jay Leno's Garage originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 May 2013 16:29:00 EST.
Jay Leno looks inward on this episode of his eponymous garage, checking out a 1963 Jaguar XKE that he bought earlier this year. It is an example of his favorite kind of car, that being original and unrestored. He bought the E-Type from its first owner, a woman who purchased it new, held on to it for 50 years and took excellent care of it. Having never been in an accident, Leno says even the paint is 85- to 90-percent original.

In the video, the XKE sits in front of two heavily modded XK120s and another '63 XKE, but Leno said all he's done - and all he plans to do - is clean it up and put on a modern set of wire wheels for safety.

He's not on any junket and there are no guests, it's just a guy talking about an object dear to his heart. If you need a refresher on the excellent genes of the new F-Type, check out the video below.
Continue reading Jay Leno's Garage features funnyman's 1963 Jaguar E-Type

Jay Leno's Garage features funnyman's 1963 Jaguar E-Type originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Apr 2013 12:45:00 EST.
Jay Leno always seems to lay his hands on some of the best cars - new or old - that have ever been created, so you'd think there aren't many new models that can impress the comic any more. Well after watching the latest installment of Jay Leno's Garage, the collector car king has had some time in newly updated 2014 Aston Martin Vanquish, and if we're not mistaken, he's downright giddy about it.

Leno spent a week with the Vanquish, and during his video walkaround, he has almost nothing negative to say about the British coupe, labeling it the "perfect combination" of sports car and a grand touring car, even defending it against very different cars like the Porsche Carrera GT and the Ford Shelby GT500. Starting at almost $300,000 and having a powerful V12 under its long, carbon-fiber hood, Leno notes the Vanquish is sophisticated, astounding him with how well-balanced it is between performance and comfort. Oddly enough, the only thing Leno didn't like about this particular car was its bright blue color, which is probably only a shade or two brighter than Leno's own denim outfit.

Scroll down to watch Leno give his opinion about the Vanquish and then have some real fun taking it for a spin.
Continue reading 2014 Aston Martin Vanquish graces Jay Leno's Garage

2014 Aston Martin Vanquish graces Jay Leno's Garage originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Feb 2013 20:00:00 EST.
Stepping away from the trendy and arcane, the next guest in Jay Leno's Garage is a 1968-69 Lamborghini R485 tractor. In case there's anyone who doesn't know, the same Ferruccio Lamborghini ultimately responsible for giving us the Aventador started off making tractors in his native Italy after World War II.

The specs are a long way from anything we'd expect from the company's road-going products. The vineyard and orchard tractor has a 5.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 85 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque, a two-foot clutch and 12 forward gears that get it from 0.3 miles per hour to 14 mph. It's also got a starter motor from a Countach.

There's a whole lot more interesting info on the farm implement, the man who built it and the man who currently owns it in the episode below.
Continue reading Jay Leno's Garage gets agrarian with Lamborghini tractor

Jay Leno's Garage gets agrarian with Lamborghini tractor originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Dec 2012 19:01:00 EST.
In this latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage, Jay brings out a longtime resident of his personal motorcycle collection, a lovely 1976 MV Agusta 750 America. The bike, which Leno has owned for some 25-plus years, has been dubbed the "Ferrari of motorcycles" by some (including our host) and really achieves the status of motive sculpture.

$6,000 when new - three or four times what most bikes were going for in 1976 - chances are good that the Italian classic could command ten times that (if not more) at auction today. Pricey to ride, then, but if you're merely interested in a sample of the lovely engine note, scroll down to watch the video and push play.
Continue reading Jay Leno's 1976 MV Agusta sounds like sex

Jay Leno's 1976 MV Agusta sounds like sex originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 09 Nov 2012 19:59:00 EST.
Jay Leno has a pretty big soft spot for alternative-fuel vehicles. From his steam-powered relics to his beloved Chevrolet Volt, the comedian's automotive interests are nothing if not varied. In the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage, Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen stops by the Big Dog Garage to show off his company's new Model S. Jay gets a closer look at the five-door EV's interesting touchscreen controls, expansive moonroof and yes, even the third-row jump seats, before taking to the road. The clip explains why Tesla eschewed the chunky standardized EV charger for a more svelte unit and how the company managed to serve up impressive aerodynamics without sacrificing styling.

Leno takes the time to whir the Model S around the greater Los Angeles area before hopping on the freeway for a quick spin. This particular model features the largest battery pack available, which gives the Model S a total range of around 300 miles. Check out the clip below for a closer look.
Continue reading Jay Leno burns rubber in Tesla Model S

Jay Leno burns rubber in Tesla Model S originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Oct 2012 20:00:00 EST.
If anyone can get their hands on rare and one-of-a-kind cars, it's Jay Leno, but some cars even elude the well-funded clutches of the funnyman-turned car collector. In this episode of Jay Leno's Garage, Jay meets a car that he thought he would never get a chance to drive; the Toyota 2000GT. And yes, we're extremely jealous.

This is the latest stop in Jay's trip to Japan, where he has already played with the Datsun 240Z and Lexus LFA, but this has to be the crescendo of his trek. Venturing to Toyota's own museum, Leno is rewarded by something even more rare than your average 2000GT. The car in question is one of only two convertible 2000GT's ever built. They were specially commissioned for use in the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice.

Due to its rarity, Leno was only allowed to drive it in what appears to be the museum parking lot. Still, that is more seat time with a 2000GT than most others will ever get to spend. Click below to watch Jay's test drive of what is arguably one of the most collectible Japanese cars ever made, as well as its use on the silver screen.
Continue reading Leno drives James Bond's 1966 Toyota 2000GT Convertible

Leno drives James Bond's 1966 Toyota 2000GT Convertible originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 19:59:00 EST.
There is only one Jay Leno and there is only one Fuji Speedway. It turns out there is also only one Lexus LFA Roadster. Put them together and you have the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage. Leno, as you may recall, recently did a tour of Japan which previously saw him at Nissan discussing the future of the Z. In this video, the comedian heads to Toyota City to watch the LFA being built and then to Oyama, Japan to drive the aforementioned fresh-air version of the V10 supercar around Fuji.

Jay says this is the only roofless LFA that's going to be built (we're not sure what that says for the maroon model they showed at auto shows in 2008 - perhaps that one wasn't a runner or it's been repainted white). In this case, you can can take the word "roofless" literally - the top isn't stowed somewhere, the LFA Roadster doesn't have one at all. That never seems to curtail the enjoyment, however, with Jay exclaiming "Oh my God!" more than once and declaring of other supercars, "None feel as refined as this."

The LFA Roadster, Jay's Serious Driving Face, glorious V10 revving and a matte black LFA built for a Buddhist monk are all in the video below.
Continue reading Jay Leno drives Lexus LFA Roadster in its motherland

Jay Leno drives Lexus LFA Roadster in its motherland originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 19:15:00 EST.
Typically Jay Leno's Garage gives us cool insights on rare, old and sometimes forgotten car models. In the latest episode, however, Jay takes us along to visit Nissan in Japan, where he talks about the next-generation of Z car.

The usually well-informed Leno starts the episode not knowing exactly what he's driving in a very special edition Nissan Fairlady 240ZG, though he does pronounce himself a fast fan of the original Z. After briefly motoring around Zama, Japan, The Chin drops in on the Nissan Technical Center, and gets the chance to ask Nissan design boss Shiro Nakamura, if there will be a new Z to mark Nissan's 80th anniversary in 2013. Jay also takes the opportunity to offer some insight as to what he'd like to see in a 2014 successor to the current 370Z.

According to Jay Leno, "The only time people in L.A. go off-roading is when they are about to get a D.U.I." That may be the case, but if you are looking to hit the trails with something inherently tough, but with a classic look, the folks at Icon are the people to see about it. The builder, known for retro-look off-roaders with serious trail chops, has done its thing with the CJ and FJ. Now the Icon brand (not to be confused with Iconic the makers of a reinterpretation of the Shelby Cobra) has rolled out its Bronco redeux, and brought it by Jay Leno's Garage.

Icon CEO and Lead Designer Jonothan Ward dropped in at Jay's with one of his creations. Ward explains that he goes around the country looking for rust-free, unmolested Bronco bodies, and fits them to a fully modern chassis. There are disc brakes all around, front and rear lock-on-the-fly differentials and a brand new Ford Coyote engine shoehorned under the hood. The 5.0-liter mill makes an ungodly sound.

Jay Leno owns all kinds of cars: Steam powered, 100-year-old electric and modern-day supercars. His legendary garage is teeming with millions of dollars of iron.

But his dream car has always been the 1963 1/2 Ford Falcon Sprint. So when he saw exactly the car on BringATrailer.com, he plunked down the $26,000 for the mint condition, seriously modified Falcon and sent a trailer.

This Falcon Sprint is built out exactly the way Leno says he would have built it. It has a 1965 289-cubic-inch small block under the hood with 360 horsepower and the battery in the trunk. It has a stiffened suspension, aftermarket wheels and a five-speed manual transmission (the original came with a four-speed). Leno, who says he regularly reads BaT, released a video on his website, Jay Leno's Garage, of his Falcon find, taking the Mustang precursor for a ride around Southern California.

Check out Jay's video below. We particularly like how he shamelessly hugs his new Ford, which is likely going to live a very good life from here on out.
Continue reading Jay Leno shows off the BaT Falcon of his dreams

Jay Leno shows off the BaT Falcon of his dreams originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Jul 2012 12:45:00 EST.
Jay Leno has finally gotten around to getting his hands on the Scion FR-S. The latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage is all about the new low-buck sports car from Toyota. Jack Hollis, the vice president and General Manager of Scion, stops in to give the TV personality a full walk-around of the 200-horsepower coupe. While Leno's collection includes every shade of high-horsepower machinery, the comedian is also a fan of cheap driving fun for the masses. Hollis hits the high points of the model's development, including the tie-in with Subaru and not-so-subtle nods to the ghosts of Toyota performance past.

As usual, the cameras follow Leno as he takes the FR-S onto the streets around Los Angeles for a quick sprint. He also submits the boxer four to his typical "immaturity test" with mixed results. We approve all the same.
Jay Leno has finally turned out the Tata Nano episode of Jay Leno's Garage. As it turns out, the television personality actually found a way to purchase the tiny machine for himself, and the show follows the car all the way down the production line and to the Big Dog Garage in Los Angeles. Leno rolled out a whole passel of Bollywood dancers to mark the occasion and even abandoned his traditional denim uniform for an elegant Indian suit. Unfortunately, the Nano isn't legal to operate on U.S. roads, so the comedian had to come up with a place to play with his new toy.

The Los Angeles Police Department was more than happy to offer Leno a little time on their test track to stretch the Nano's legs. Despite the small engine, the car seems plenty entertaining to drive, though its suspension is clearly set up to handle the rough streets and byways of the Indian countryside. Check out the clip for yourself.
Continue reading Jay Leno's Garage releases Bollywood-inspired Tata Nano episode

Jay Leno's Garage releases Bollywood-inspired Tata Nano episode originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 May 2012 19:31:00 EST.
It looks like we weren't the only ones to get our hands on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500. Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief nameplate engineer, recently stopped by the Big Dog Garage to show off both the Mustang Boss 302 and the GT500. It's no secret that Leno has always been a Mustang fan, and with the ridiculously powerful supercharged 5.8-liter pumping out more grunt than the comedian's own Ford GT, the 2013 Shelby has earned itself another proponent. Leno takes the big horse out for a ride around town, including over some of the more punishing stretches of Los Angeles freeway before heading home.

Of course, it wouldn't be an episode of Jay Leno's Garage without a proper burnout, and the clip doesn't disappoint. Looks like fun to us. Now the only question is whether Leno will add one of these machines to his own personal collection. Scroll down below to watch the video, which concludes with a little tribute to the recently deceased Carroll Shelby.
Continue reading Jay Leno gets nostalgic driving Shelby GT500 and Boss 302

Jay Leno gets nostalgic driving Shelby GT500 and Boss 302 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 21 May 2012 20:01:00 EST.
Back in 2009, General Motors whipped up a special-edition Chevrolet Camaro for Jay Leno. With a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 engine, unique aerodynamic and cooling work, Brembo brakes on all four corners and a Pedders coil-over suspension kit, the vehicle was designed to be a modern interpretation of the old Z28. Small aesthetic tweaks abound as well, from a revised front fascia to functional brake duct inlets on the rear quarters and unique exhaust outlets. GM even slathered the vehicle in the same paint as the original Camaro Concept. Very sexy.

Why do we bring up the 420 horsepower special edition now? Because Leno just took delivery of it. The latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage pours over every last detail of the car before hitting the road.

We like the idea of a better-handling, more track-focused Camaro, and while the Camaro ZL1 has scratched that itch for plenty of people, Leno's V6 bruiser is very cool. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Continue reading Jay Leno Camaro finally finds its way home

Jay Leno Camaro finally finds its way home originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 16:56:00 EST.
Jay Leno has a special place in his heart for steam power. The comedian has a collection of vintage vehicles that have more in common with a classic train than a modern car, and of those, his 1906 Stanley Steamer seems to be one of his favorites.

In 2007, the Stanley suffered a bit of a catastrophic failure, and Leno and his team of steam mechanics have been working to get the vehicle back into ship shape ever since. Of course, in Leno's vocabulary, "ship shape" means better than ever. The Stanley now wears hydraulic drum brakes from a Jaguar XK120 instead of the manual drums found on the original Steamer.

The crew also worked in a set of electric fuel pumps and replaced the acetylene headlights and oil tail lamps with electric versions. The team also managed to bump up the horsepower. The Steamer originally cruised along with a 23-inch boiler, but Leno had a new 30-inch boiler made and installed. It took his shop 26 tries to design boiler baffles that could accurately and evenly spread heat across the full surface, but now Leno has the equivalent of a hot rod Steamer. Pure awesomeness. Hit the jump to check out the lengthy video for yourself.
Continue reading Jay Leno upgrades his 1906 Stanley Steamer Vanderbilt Cup Racer

Jay Leno upgrades his 1906 Stanley Steamer Vanderbilt Cup Racer originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 16:55:00 EST.
Joe Grace, Fiat Vehicle Line Executive, swung by Jay Leno's garage with the brand's new 500 Abarth for a little history lesson and a quick walk around. Here in the States, it's easy to forget that Karl Abarth, the man behind the Fiat tuning division, was as driven as they come when pushing the performance envelope. Abarth got his start racing motorcycles before turning his eye to four-wheeled prototypes and aftermarket performance, and his list of lifelong achievements is as lengthy as it is varied. Abarth was our kind of guy.

Grace took the time to show Leno exactly what makes the 500 Abarth so different from the comedian's own pint-sized hatchback, including its turbocharged, 1.4-liter four-cylinder good for 160 horsepower, along with its unique aesthetics and performance-oriented suspension and exhaust. Is the 500 Abarth cool? Sure. Is it as cool as Karl Abarth racing a steam locomotive with a sidecar motorcycle? We think not. Hit the jump to check the video for yourself.
Continue reading Fiat 500 Abarth visits Jay Leno's Garage

Fiat 500 Abarth visits Jay Leno's Garage originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Dec 2011 19:58:00 EST.
Here's a fun bit of trivia: Jay Leno has driven his Chevrolet Volt nearly 11,000 miles and doesn't have a single gas station receipt to show for it. According to The New York Times Wheels blog, Leno has had his plug-in for 11 months and, as he told them, "I've never had to put gas in it yet... They gave it to me with a full tank of gas. I've used less than half of that."

Given that Leno has an entire fleet of gas-swilling rides in his garage, he can just take the Volt out whenever he knows he can get to Point B and back without refueling. You have to be kind of careful to put 11,000 miles on a Volt without ever going more than 40 miles (plus or minus) at a stretch. Luckily, Leno said his commute is less than 35 miles a day, and so he uses the Volt as his daily driver. He then makes a fairly good joke at the expense of General Motors, which you can read here.
Jay Leno has driven 11,000 miles in his Chevy Volt, still hasn't bought gas originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 16:00:00 EST.
The Lamborghini Aventador stands to be the new supercar king. For starters, every body part and component is completely new, from the 6.5-liter V12 boasting 700 horsepower to the light-weight carbon fiber monocoque. We're enthralled, but what about enthusiast royalty like Jay Leno?

Lamborghini President Stephan Winkelmann took to the road to bring the Aventador to Leno, and the late night talk show host was thoroughly impressed. Winkelmann talks about how new and impressive the Aventador is, with its 0-60 time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 217 miles per hour. Research and Development Director Maurizio Reggiani followed with an even more in-depth dive into what makes the Aventador special, with Reggiani giving Leno a tour of the Aventador using a body-free version of the Italian exotic.

Hit the jump to see Leno and his new Italian friends go in-depth with the Aventador. Of course Leno gets to drive the Aventador at the end, but even he had to hit the road with a chaperon.
Continue reading Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann stops by Jay Leno's Garage with Aventador

Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann stops by Jay Leno's Garage with Aventador originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 20:01:00 EST.
Proving yet again that there's simply nothing in the automotive world that comedian, late night talk show host and genuinely nice guy Jay Leno can't get his hands on is the video you'll see after the break.

This week, Jay welcomes Horatio Pagani into his garage, and the man who heads his own eponymous automaker brought along a brand spankin' new Huayra for show-and-tell. Perhaps best of all (since we obviously didn't get to drive it ourselves), we now know the proper way to say Huayra: Why-ra.

Pagani tells us that, while the Zonda was inspired by Le Mans racing cars, the Huayra draws its inspiration from the moment an aircraft leaves the tarmac and begins to take flight. We have to admit, from the way the doors open like the portal into an aircraft to the wing-like splitters at the rear and the airfoil-shaped side mirrors, we can see clear evidence of aeronautical design in the Huayra.

That said, it's impossible to truly appreciate how special this latest Pagani is until you gaze upon its exquisitely crafted interior. Leather, bare aluminum and carbon fiber surround the driver and passenger in what we think may be the most impressive single element of the Huayra's look and feel. Well, that and those amazing wheel hubs. Oh, and the sound it makes when the turbochargers kick in. Guess the entire thing is pretty impressive, eh?

Do yourself a favor and watch the entire video after the break, it's worth it.
Continue reading Jay Leno's Garage welcomes Pagani Huayra and Pagani himself

Jay Leno's Garage welcomes Pagani Huayra and Pagani himself originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 20:28:00 EST.
