Race fans that look forward to the motorsports mecca that is the 24 Hours of Le Mans will have to wait one additional week.

According to an Autosport report, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest had announced the dates for the 2013 race as June 15-16, but following a request by the FIA, the dates had been changed. The race will now take place the 22nd and 23rd of June. The test date for the race will now be on June 9th.

In a statement from the ACO, the change was made, "in order to harmonize the world calendar of motor racing events."

The schedule change will not alter the fact that the 24 Hours of Le Mans remains as the centerpiece of the FIA World Endurance Championship season. The current season includes 12 Hours of Sebring, and six hour races at Spa, Silverstone, Sao Paulo, Bahrain, Fuji, and Shangai.
Next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans pushed back a week originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 Aug 2012 14:30:00 EST.
The LMP1 racer standing on its nose is the No. 8 Toyota TS030 driven by Anthony Davidson, having just recently begun his driving stint and only five hours into the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while the red car next to it is the No. 81 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia driven by Piergiuseppe Perrazini. Davidson took the inside line down the Mulsanne Straight, and based on the vantage point in the video, it looks like Davidson had got a decent chunk of the Toyota ahead of the Ferrari when Perrazini turned into him.

The result were hard runs into the tire wall and the end of the race for both drivers. Davidson got out on his own but was sent to the hospital for observation until Monday morning, but thankfully Toyota has released a statement saying Davidson shows "no signs of any injuries." However, reports indicate Davidson has fractured two vertebra, and he soon tweeted from the hospital "Well that was a big one! Lying in a French hospital with a broken back wasn't what I had in mind at this stage in the race..."

The safety car came out while the accident was cleared, but the Toyota team's woes were compounded when the No. 7 TS030 driven by Kazuki Nakajima drove into the Nissan DeltaWing of Satoshi Motoyama on the restart. The contact sent the DeltaWing into the wall (and despite efforts to revive it, out of the race) and the No. 7 Toyota headed back to the pits for repairs and a steep drop down the order. As of this writing, Audi's brace of R18 E-Tron Quattro racers appear to have the inside track on a victory.

Today's practice session for the 24 Hours of Le Mans has our anticipation of this weekend's race at a fever pitch. The four Audi R18s (two diesel and two hybrid quattro cars) have ended the day of practice in 1-2-3-4 order with the quickest lap times, followed very closely by the pair of petrol hybrids from Toyota. Having battled the quicker LMP1 cars from Peugeot for years, though, Audi knows better than anyone that you don't need to be the fastest car at Le Mans to win. The oddly shaped Nissan DeltaWing, meanwhile, ended the day of practice with a best lap of 3:43.576, which puts it squarely in the midst of the LMP2 class cars.

With Le Mans on the brain today, we were just about to start putting together a top-to-bottom guide for the best spectating experience of this weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans, but then we discovered our friend and former colleague Reilly Brennan beat us to the punch.

Part of Reilly's patent-pending "Couch Kit" series, his 24 Hours of Le Mans guide tells you everything you need to know about this weekend's race, from when and where to watch the action to what stories will be the most interesting to follow. We've included a few of the most essential items from his guide below, but you'll want to click through to his site to make sure you're fully prepared to watch the race.

In real estate, the three most important things are location, location, location. In motorsports, it's preparation, preparation, preparation. Le Mans is only a few days away and the Pratt & Miller team has put together a five-part series examining what they do to get the Corvette C6.R ready to win its class.

The first episode is called "The Prep." You quickly find out that work on this year's race began at the end of last year's race, and that you need 12 months of getting ready because once you're trackside, "You can't go back." You'll find the short yet packed video by scrolling down.

*UPDATE: Pratt & Miller has just uploaded the second video in this series, The Team. You can watch it by scrolling below.
Continue reading Watch the Pratt & Miller Corvette team prep for Le Mans *UPDATE

Watch the Pratt & Miller Corvette team prep for Le Mans *UPDATE originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Jun 2012 11:29:00 EST.
The DeltaWing project now has two major corporate backers and, more importantly, an engine. Nissan and Michelin have signed on with the innovative project of designer Ben Bowlby, Dan Gurney's All-American Racers and Don Panoz. Now called the Nissan DeltaWing, the Japanese firm will provide a turbocharged, direct-injected 1.6-liter, four-cylinder with an output of around 300 horsepower. Known as DIG-T, the powerplant shares the same roots as the engine in the Nissan Juke.

That's about 200 hp down on the 510 horsepower developed by the diesel V6 in the Audi R18 e-tron Quattro and about half the horsepower developed by other LMP1 racers. However, Nissan says the engine is half the weight of a typical LMP1 motor, and paired with the DeltaWing's minimal aerodynamic drag, the lap times are said to be somewhere between those of the LMP1 and LMP2 classes. Why does this matter? Because Nissan and Co. are taking this needle-nosed baby to Le Mans.

Of call cars and classes, Nissan says this strangest looking effort is one that will "showcase the pioneering technology that will show one potential direction for the future of motorsport and will feed into the research and development of future technologies, that filter down to Nissan's road car product range."

The Nissan DeltaWing will be allowed to run in the 24 Hours of Le Mans following a special dispensation for an experimental car that doesn't follow any technical guidelines offered by ACO, the organizer of Le Mans. It will use Garage 56, it will wear Number 0, and won't be classified in the results. Even so, we'll be watching closely. Follow the jump for a video of the racecar's development and a press release detailing Nissan's involvement.
Continue reading Nissan backs DeltaWing racecar, headed for Le Mans [w/video]

Nissan backs DeltaWing racecar, headed for Le Mans [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 11:01:00 EST.
Morgan may not be the first brand to come to mind when you think of cutting-edge racing technology, but the small British automaker has a deep and rich heritage in motorsports. Particularly at Le Mans, where Morgan scored a class victory in 1962. That was fifty years ago this year, and so, for the first time since last running the Aero 8R GT2 back in 2004, Morgan is planning a return to the famous French endurance race.

Rather than develop one of its existing sportscars (Three Wheeler, we're looking at you, buddy) into a GT racer, however, Morgan is teaming up with independent racing team OAK Racing to build a Morgan LMP2. The car will be based on a Pescarolo chassis, OAK Racing and Morgan (whose chief executives are pictured above) running one factory-backed car in the new FIA World Endurance Championship (which includes Le Mans) this year, with additional examples to be made available for customer teams interested in getting on board. Details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Morgan returning to Le Mans with new LMP2

Morgan returning to Le Mans with new LMP2 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 18:40:00 EST.
Toyota is dead serious about its new Le Mans effort. To that end, the Japanese auto giant is developing an all-new hybrid LMP1 racer, it has retained the considerable services of Team Oreca to help with trackside logistics, and it has now announced its driver lineup. And make no mistake about it, these are no rookies.

Headlining the roster is Alex Wurz, who holds the title as the youngest winner in the history of Le Mans. The Austrian driver won again for Peugeot two years ago, and he has also taken the checkered flag at the Petit Le Mans, the Spa 1,000km and the Sebring 12 Hours, to name just a few. And as if that weren't enough, he's also an accomplished former Formula One driver, having driven for and scored podium finishes for a variety of teams including Benetton, McLaren and Williams (though not Toyota).

Joining Wurz will be Nicolas Lapierre, a French driver with a distinguished record in both lower formula racing (like F3 and A1GP) and endurance racing, including a win at Sebring this year. Finally, Toyota has added Kazuki Nakajima (one of Japan's best F1 drivers of the modern era) to the team that will be developing and fielding the new LMP1 at La Sarthe and other FIA World Endurance Championship races next season. The car is expected to make its debut "early in the new year" at a yet-to-be-determined European venue.
Continue reading Toyota recruits top drivers for new Le Mans program

Toyota recruits top drivers for new Le Mans program originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 07 Nov 2011 18:20:00 EST.
Emanuele Pirro has spent the last 17 years as an Audi works driver, so it's safe to say he knows his way around Quattro-equipped iron. Not only has Pirro had the pleasure of first crack at the latest gems from Audi in that time, he's also had the pleasure of winning three LeMans victories behind the four rings.

During the course of over four videos produced last week for Audi's social media outlets in the United States, Pirro details the limited-edition 2011 Audi R8 GT. Starting with the car's 560-horsepower, V10-motivated 3.6 second 0-60 time, Pirro takes four episodes to explain why you <strike>want</strike> need an R8 GT, as if you didn't already know. Included in that long list of reasons are the carbon fiber spoiler and front splitter. Did we mention this beast is 180 pounds lighter than the regular car?

Honda is heading to Le Mans. No, we're not talking about the Acura ARX-02a that competes against Audi and Peugeot in the LMP class. Honda Performance Development is taking its race-prepped CR-Z to the 24 Hours of Le Mans to run exhibition laps before the start of the big show.

Currently, the HPD CR-Z serves as pace car for the Speed EuroSeries. It's also spent time running on American soil, when Honda entered the hybrid racer in the Spinal Tap of endurance racing, the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. The car ran wonderfully, finishing 2nd in its class.

The stripped-down racing CR-Z produces 200-horsepower and 201 pound-feet of torque. That energy is funneled through a six-speed manual gearbox, and we're pretty certain the whole setup rotates rather nicely thanks to the 7kWh Li-ion battery pack in the back. Check out more details in our gallery and in the official press release after the jump.
Continue reading Honda Performance Development CR-Z ready to hit Le Mans

Honda Performance Development CR-Z ready to hit Le Mans originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 13:30:00 EST.
The domination of racing teams and the factories that support them wax and wane across countless motorsports disciplines around the world from year to year. But arguably none has continued to dominate like Audi at Le Mans. Since the turn of the millennium, Audi has won the iconic French endurance race every year but two: In 2003 when its own sister company Bentley took top honors, and in 2009, when its chief rival, Peugeot took the win.

Audi has introduced a succession of sports prototype racers to uphold its honor, from the original R8 through the R10 TDI and the R15 TDI that won last year. The latest is the closed-cockpit R18 TDI, which the German automaker has yet to field in an actual race but which has now undergone its first test sessions in the full battle livery you see here.

The trio of silver and black racers will again be differentiated by the red, yellow and black highlights, and feature a number of body parts crafted from carbon fiber, giving the R18 TDI a lightweight form on which Audi is banking to fend off Peugeot, which started off the season strong by defeating the outgoing R15 at Sebring.

Will the new R18 prove capable of shutting out its French rivals for the title event at Le Mans this coming June? We'll have to wait and see, but with the preliminary test sessions at the Circuit de la Sarthe reinstituted this past weekend after a two-year absence, the Audis were on top of the time sheets, the Peugeots only narrowly beating out the third of them. Follow the jump for press releases from the Paul Ricard and La Sarthe test sessions and take a closer look in the high-resolution image gallery below.

The inaugural race of the 2011 Le Mans Series, Le Castellet 6-Hours, got off to a nasty beginning today, with a mistake by the pit car causing a huge pileup in the GT field. Thanks to a hump in the back stretch of the Paul Ricard HTTT circuit, cars at the back of the pack can't see the front of the field, just the green light telling them to go.

At the start of Le Castellet, the lights turned green, but the pace car didn't leave the track. Fortunately for the Audi pace car driver, the prototype field saw his mistake and slowed down abruptly.

Those in GT, thinking the race was still green, crested the rise to be met with much slower traffic. The resulting panic stops led to pandemonium, which left at least one Farnbacher-Loles Porsche out of commission before the race even got started. Check out the video after the jump.

Audi let its new diesel-powered R18 LMP1 enclosed prototype loose on the U.S. for the first time for testing over the four-day weekend surrounding the 12 Hours of Sebring. Audi tested both R18s, chassis 101 and 102, against an R15 for a control group. The first U.S tests garnered feedback from all 10 of Audi's factory drivers.

The tests put a beating on the R18s to make sure their aerodynamics, reliability and fuel economy all stacked up to the standards set by the previous generations of Audi's diesel LeMans prototypes.

Their next stop is Ingolstadt to be fully disassembled and checked out, before being shipped to LeMans for the 24-hour race in June. Trust us, you owe it to yourself to see the images below in their full high-res glory.

Aston Martin has revealed its plans for this year's LeMans Cup series, introducing a brand new LMP1 race car called the AMR-One in the process.

The AMR-One is powered by a turbocharged and direct-injected inline-six gas engine resting in a carbon fiber monocoque open-top chassis. The Aston's tiny 2.0-liter mill was developed with LeMans Cup's new efficiency regulations in mind.

There will be six AMR-Ones built in total, with a one-car effort going into the 2011 Intercontinental LeMans series, which includes the 24 Hours of LeMans. Darren Turner and Stefan Mucke plus a third driver (to be determined) will wheel number 007 at LeMans, and Adrian Fernandez, Andy Meyrick and Harold Primat will drive car 009. Follow the jump for Aston's official press blast.

Peugeot is looking for ways to add an environmentally-conscious side to its endurance racing efforts of late, and brought yet another one of its ideas to this year's Geneva Motor Show. The Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 uses hybrid diesel technology to help it not only burn cleaner, but stay on track longer than a standard LeMans entry.

Like most hybrid racers, the electric motor on board the 908 uses regenerative braking to store up power for an electric motor than can be used for short squirts of 80 hp when the driver needs it. The diesel engine is a 3.7-liter, 550-horsepower V8, backed up by a six-speed sequential gearbox.

The 908 Hybrid4 doesn't make its track debut until the end of this month, so an actual racing season is pretty much out for 2011. Instead, Peugeot says it's hoping to have the car ready for the first official pre-LeMans test in June. Of course, that will all depend on how well the 908 Hybrid4's first track outing goes.

Matech took two Ford GTs to Le Mans this year and came back with stories to tell. Having won the GT3 class and built the LMGT1 competitors specifically to return the track that made the GT40's name, it is clear why they wish to crow.

Neither car finished the race, but on their first try both cars finished ahead of some much more seasoned competition. But hey: Ford GT + Le Mans = what's not to like? You'll find the trailer after the jump.

BMW has decided to officially compete for the inaugural Intercontinental Le Mans Cup with the M3 GT2. This year's initial iteration will include three races at England's Silverstone, the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, and Zuhai in China. Peugeot has already committed to run the LMP1 class 908 and Audi is considering running the R15+ TDI.

The M3 GT2 debuted in the American Le Mans Series in 2009 with Rahal Letterman Racing and BMW added Team Schnitzer in Europe for 2010. Schnitzer will campaign the cars in the cup runs at Silverstone and Zuhai, while Rahal will be responsible for the American race. In 2011, the Intercontinental cup will expand to six races, including Sebring and Le Mans.

After reviewing this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans in the previous episode of the Corvette Racing video series, the latest installment looks at the off-track activities that preceded the race. Once the cars and drivers have established their place on the starting grid, they're able to take a short break from competition to interact with the fans - especially the rabid Danish crowd that showed up to cheer on Jan Magnussen. Judging from the narration, you'd think that eight overall victories at the Circuit de la Sarthe aren't enough for Tom Kristensen to gain any attention from his countrymen. (If you've seen Truth in 24, however, you know full well that the Danes treat TK like a rock star, too.)

Apparently the narrator missed the memo from the marketing department about referring to Chevrolet as Chevy. Rather than vuvuzelas, Le Mans fans prefer to express their enthusiasm using air horns, so the Corvette crew brought a very special one of their own this year. Wanna see? Then check out video after the jump.

The Porsche 911 Sport Classic, introduced late last year, never made it into North American showrooms. The Feds wanted it certified, and with a production run of just a couple hundred units, the German automaker couldn't accomplish the task in a financially feasible manner. That's a cryin' shame, as the gray 911 sporting retro-styled Fuchs wheels and a ducktail is likely one of the best street vehicles to ever come out of Stuttgart.

As good fortune would have it, we crossed paths with a 911 Sport Classic factory prototype in France at the 2010 Le Mans Classic earlier this month. Not only were we able to spend three days with the ultra-limited-edition Porsche, but we had the opportunity to take her out for several hot laps of the complete Le Mans circuit. What differentiates the Sport Classic from the Carrera S, and what's the story behind those retro-styled touches? How does the Sport Classic drive, and can it be compared to a track-ready GT3? Lastly, what's the justification for such a high sticker price? Find these answers, and more, after the jump.

Porsche Design P'6612 Dashboard Le Mans 1970 Limited Edition - Click above for high-res image gallery

Some races come and go, but a handful remain inextricably intertwined with the very fabric of motor racing around the world. Races like the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The latter is well known worldwide as one of the most grueling tests of man and machine, and nobody has won it more times than Porsche.

The German marque's first victory came at the hands of Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood, who led a 1-2-3 finish for Porsche behind the wheel of their iconic 917 K. Forty years later, the company's merchandizing division, Porsche Design, has released a limited-edition timepiece to commemorate the feat.

The Porsche Design P'6612 Dashboard Le Mans 1970 Limited Edition, as you might have guessed from the name, features a face styled after the 917 K's dashboard instruments, with white indices on a black background and red hands and accents, offset by the number 23 that adorned the winning long-tail 917 K and which followed Herrmann throughout his career. The tachometer scale around the bezel can be used to calculate overall speed, etched into the brushed and polished titanium case and affixed with a perforated calfskin strap with red topstitching reminiscent of the 917's steering wheel.

Only 917 examples of the special edition chronograph will be offered, released just in time for the Le Mans Classic. Each comes accompanied by a scale model of the 917 K and a booklet signed by Herrmann and Attwood. Details in the press release after the jump with photos in the gallery below.

2010 Le Mans Classic - Click above for high-res image gallery, and help us caption some of the cars!

Every two years in July, hundreds of vintage race cars gather at the famed Le Mans race circuit in France to fire up their engines and relive the glory days in the historic corners and long straights of the nearly 8.5-mile Circuit de la Sarthe. But that's just part of it. In addition to the priceless machinery racing on the track, thousands of other classic cars trek to the grounds to fill nearly every open spot at the huge venue. Autoblog was invited by Porsche France to enjoy the 2010 Le Mans Classic in person, and needless to say, it was absolutely spectacular.

According to the organizers, this year's show welcomed 100,000 spectators, 8,000 display cars, 460 racing cars and 1,000 drivers. With sunny 95-degree temperatures over both days, the weather was unusually hot and the grounds chokingly dusty, but it didn't seem to keep anyone - or anything - from the event.

When not enjoying the racing, we strolled the show and stumbled over well-preserved classics from Jaguar, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Renault, Lamborghini, Audi, BMW and more. Porsche models were everywhere as the various European Porsche Car Clubs stormed the venue with more than 800 cars. Where else can you physically brush elbows with a race-ready BMW M1, a brand-new 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO and ride in the back of a historic war-era Willys Jeep all within the same 60 seconds? Le Mans Classic, baby. And these weren't sterile, stuck-behind-the-ropes museum stock, either - everything was meant to be driven and enjoyed.
We've put together a massive gallery offering just a taste of the caliber of vehicles on display, running hot laps and racing last weekend. While we've attempted to caption many of these, some still have us stumped. If you can identify a few of the nameless, give us a shout in the comments (with the photo number as seen in the URL) and we'll update the captions as quickly as our server's cache will let us.
