Subaru today announced a recall that affects 5,379 Legacy sedan and Outback wagon models in the United States. All of the affected 2013 model-year vehicles were built between February 15 and June 15 of 2012.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "the inner and outer shafts of the steering column assembly may become disengaged from one another" in these vehicles. If that happens, the driver can lose the ability to steer the vehicle, which could obviously lead to all sorts of harmful things.

Subaru will notify owners of the problem, and affected models will have their steering columns replaced at dealerships, free of charge. Scroll down for the official NHSTA report.
Continue reading 2013 Subaru Legacy and Outback recalled over potential steering loss

2013 Subaru Legacy and Outback recalled over potential steering loss originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 May 2013 10:44:00 EST.
Subaru has issued one of the strangest recalls we've come across in some time. As it turns out, certain Subaru models may randomly start their own engines. The issue is confined to select models equipped with an automatic or CVT and the company's optional Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory. If the RES key fob is dropped, it could "randomly transmit an engine start request without pressing the button."

Vehicles affected include the 2010-2012 Legacy and Outback with an automatic or CVT, 2012-2013 Impreza with the CVT, and 2013 XV Crosstrek with CVT (shown), all equipped with the Audiovox RES accessory. Likewise, certain 2013 Legacy and Outbacks may have received replacement RES fobs that could be affected. All told, 47,419 vehicles are included in the recall.

Should one of these cars start on their own, Subaru says they will run up to 15 minutes, but the vehicle may also continue to start and stop until either the battery in the fob dies or the car runs out of fuel. Of course, if one of these cars is parked in an enclosed area, that means harmful gasses could build up, which could be dangerous if inhaled.

The fix is an obvious one: Subaru will replace the RES fobs for free. Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to be notified by the end of April, though their car might let them know sooner.
Continue reading Subaru issues recall over cars that may start themselves

Subaru issues recall over cars that may start themselves originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 15:44:00 EST.
In 2011 Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries confirmed that a hybrid Subaru would debut this year. Ever since, there's been speculation about what kind of technology the gasoline-electric hybrid would use - Subaru's own or some version of the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive, which car would debut the new system - Forester, Legacy, or Outback - and whether it would come to America or be a Japan-only model.

A report in The Detroit Bureau says that whatever that first model is, it could be shown as soon as the New York Auto Show, and while the company feels it's a must-have offering for the Japanese market it will also come to the US. It will have a Subaru-developed mild hybrid system that could have been previewed by the Hybrid Tourer concept shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, and is not expected to be able to drive on electric power alone. The Hybrid Tourer used a direct-injected, 2.0-liter boxer engine connected to a CVT and assisted by an electric motor rated at 13 horsepower. Subaru has yet to give anything away about the details of its hybrid plans, so we'll look to New York for the long-awaited unveil.
Subaru's first hybrid drawing close originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 27 Jan 2013 09:02:00 EST.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a massive recall campaign today for some of the more popular Subaru models due to defective puddle lights that could short out and possibly lead to smoke and/or fire.

(*)While the recall notice lists a total of 633,842 Forester, Legacy, Outback and Tribeca models from various model years, Automotive News is reporting that there are only 53,999 units actually equipped with the defective lights, but Subaru is having to make the massive recall since it is unable identify which vehicles have the lights.

The problem with the 2009 through 2012 Forester, 2006 through 2012 Tribeca and the 2010 through 2011 Legacy and Outback is that the puddle lights mounted under the door mirrors can collect water or moisture, which can lead to the short. To fix the problem, Subaru is adding an extra fuse to the wiring harness as a part of the recall that will go into effect next month. For Forester owners, this is the second major recall in less than a year following the 275,000 units that were afflicted with faulty rear seatbelts.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed its annual list of Top Safety Picks, an award that highlights automobiles it says offer "superior crash protection." A new and still more significant award, the Top Safety Pick+ honor, is given to those vehicles that earn good ratings for occupant protection in four out of five areas of measure. And while some 117 vehicles were given the TSP seal of approval for 2013, just 13 passed muster for TSP+.

To be fair, IIHS only evaluated 29 vehicles with its new testing procedures for TSP+ (we'd expect that the number of qualified cars will rise substantially for 2014). Luxury and Near Luxury midsize cars were the first groups evaluated, followed by midsizers in the Moderately Priced Cars category - unsurprisingly, it's only midsize cars that you'll find among the class this year.
Only two luxury sedans made the list of 13 for 2013: the Acura TL and Volvo S60. The other 11 cars on the list included entries from domestic, Japanese and German car makers: Dodge Avenger, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord (sedan and coupe), Kia Optima (but not its close kin, the Hyundai Sonata, strangely), Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy and Outback, Suzuki Kizashi and the Volkswagen Passat all made the grade.

Two other cars kept coming to mind during my week with the 2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i. The first was the 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT that we tested for a full year in our long-term fleet, and the second was the new-for-2012 Toyota Camry, the indisputable best-selling car in the US and assembly line sibling of the Legacy. The two cars are built side-by-side at Subaru's assembly plant in Indiana.

Our long-term Legacy 2.5 GT wasn't universally loved, but I had a fondness for it after my wife and I spent two weeks with it road-tripping through New England, including a particularly exciting crawl up Mt. Washington. It wasn't a true sports sedan, but unlike most midsizers with manual transmissions, neither was it saddled with an anemic base engine. The 265-horsepower turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine was game to play and the six-speed stick at least kept me engaged. The 2.5 GT model, however, has been axed, leaving this 2.5i model and a more expensive, more powerful 3.6-liter six-cylinder model.

As for the Camry, it's the midsize sedan against which all others are judged, not because it's necessarily the best, but because it manages to consistently outsell the competition no matter how good they get. Score one for momentum and marketing, but there are a number of midsizers I personally rank above Toyota's new Camry - most, actually. So as I drove Subaru's refreshed Legacy 2.5i, I kept wondering, is it better than the ghost of our long-termer, and does it, too, deserve the hollow credit of being better than the segment's best seller?

Driving Notes

This Legacy has surprisingly communicative and nicely weighted steering. With so many vehicles switching to electronic power-assisted steering mechanisms for fuel savings, I originally wondered if Subaru had struck upon a magic ordering of 1s and 0s. Nope, it still carries a hydraulic power steering system that just feels more natural in one's hands.

The Legacy exhibits noticeably high ground clearance that reminds me of a lady hiking up her skirt to cross a puddle. Maybe it's to accentuate the all-wheel-drive system and go-anywhere character of Subarus, but the visibly large gap between tire and fender doesn't help an already awkward design that was tweaked for 2013.

Alas, the 2.5GT is no longer available. While that engine is gone, the 2.5i models are still offered with a 6-speed manual or, like the car I drove, a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and it's a droner. I normally ignore paddle shifters in non-sporting vehicles, but actually used the appendages in this 2.5i to put the engine speed where I wanted it, efficiency be damned.

The 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder is actually new for 2013, but only produces three more horsepower and four more pound-feet of torque than the prior 2.5-liter engine. It is an adequate engine for buyers who care little for performance, but otherwise is taxed by the Legacy's weight and strain of its AWD running gear.

The Legacy has an enormous capacity for rear seat passengers. Rear leg room is 37.8 inches, and as you can see in the pictures, no one's knees will be touching any seatbacks.

New for 2013 is Subaru's EyeSight system, a pair of cameras that allows for advanced safety tech like adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking and lane departure warning. Most vehicles that offer those features use radar hardware mounted in the front fascia somewhere. EyeSight, however, locates its cameras inside the car on either side of the rearview mirror. You don't really notice the cameras until you notice them, and then you can't stop noticing them. Subaru, however, says its system costs less than others, and it's progress to see these features available on a car costing $30k.

Subaru needs to up its infotainment game, or at least license better navigation and entertainment tech from its suppliers or another automaker. The Legacy's system feels at least 2-3 years behind the segment's best in terms of its user interface and features.

Whereas our 2.5 GT long-termer was eager to play, this 2.5i is as docile and sedate as an old dog. It actually struck me as being a better Camry than the Camry. For shoppers who care only about traveling between A and B in a comfortable and safe sedan, the Legacy's AWD assuredness and pre-cognitive safety tech makes it the Indiana import to choose.

In mid-May, Subaru announced plans to expand its Lafayette, Indiana factory where it builds the Legacy, Outback and Tribeca, along with some Camry models for its partners at Toyota. The 52,000-square-foot expansion will bump capacity out to 180,000 units from 156K, and the $75M commitment will lead to around 100 new jobs. But that may just be the tip of the iceberg for Subaru's plans here in North America.

According to a new report from Japan's Kyodo News, Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries is investigating building a whole new plant in the States. The publication says that the plant could be online for the fiscal year beginning April 2015. The move would add capacity for the growing brand, which had sought to build a joint-venture plant in China, whose government has not yet signed off on the proceedings.
Subaru mulling new plant in U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Jun 2012 18:05:00 EST.
"Ja, that ice'll hold ya." Until it didn't, and suddenly a man's 1996 Legacy wagon was at the bottom of a shallow lake in Finland. Three months later, the Subaru wagon was dragged from its freshwater slumber, and while most people would just write the car off or at most turn it into a parts donor, curiosity got the better of the rescue squad.

Would it run? Just how bad was the damage? Before plunging below the surface, the owner did have time to shut the engine down and get his dogs out, so the boxer four didn't aspirate any water and electrons weren't coursing through the various circuits, two details that likely saved a bunch of damage. After removing a live fish from the engine bay, draining a lot of water from the fuel tank and crankcase, and a fresh fill of fluids and spark plugs, lo and behold, the SCUBA-ru chugged to life on the first try.

It's not perfect; until the residual water works its way through the fuel system it's going to feel a little low on power, and oxidation may start to fiercely assert itself. The smell is probably epic, too, but this is one funkbox with a great story.
Subaru Legacy that spent 3 months at bottom of Finnish lake starts on first try originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Jun 2012 09:30:00 EST.
The next-generation Subaru WRX and WRX STI are still shrouded in a cloak of secrecy. Or is it indecision? Either way, Car and Driver is reporting that when Subaru eventually pulls the wraps off whatever is going to wear the WRX badge, there's going to be a turbocharged version of the 2.0-liter FA-series engine underhood, a derivative of the naturally aspirated engine that's found in the Subaru BRZ.

How does the venerable buff book know this? Because the turbo'ed flat-four has already appeared in the Japanese domestic market Legacy, making 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, mated to a continuously variable transmission. C/D says that engine differs from the one in the BRZ in that it uses Subaru's own direct injection system rather than one coming from Toyota.

In the standard WRX, horsepower numbers are expected to be a bit lower than in the JDM Legacy, though the STI version will probably see power boosted. C/D says the new 2.0-liter engine is supplanting the 2.5-liter Subaru has been using due to fuel economy considerations, though there's also something to the notion of consolidating powertrains to reap greater efficiencies in manufacturing.
Next Subaru WRX previewed by Japanese Legacy's 2.0L turbo? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 May 2012 17:31:00 EST.
The launch of the new XV Crosstrek may be the bigger news for Subaru here at the New York Auto Show, and the BRZ coupe may still be getting the lion's share of the attention, but the Legacy and its high-riding counterpart, the Outback, have also debuted here in Manhattan with a series of updates.

Most noticeable (that term being a relative one) is the pair's revised front fascia, but behind the new look is a fresh boxer four that replaces the old one in the 2.5i model, now producing three more horsepower and four more pound-feet of torque (173 hp/174 lb-ft.) while returning improved fuel economy. An updated CVT is the principal transmission for the 2.5-liter four, with a six-speed manual available, both driving all four wheels in typical Fuji Heavy Industries style. The available 3.6-liter flat six carries over with a five-speed automatic. Subaru says it has also revisited the suspensions on both models for improved ride comfort and performance.

There's also a suite of new electronics packed into the revised Legacy and Outback, including everything from new active safety technology features like lane departure warning and collision mitigation to improved audio system connectivity.

Sadly, Subaru has axed the enthusiast-minded Legacy 2.5GT model for 2013.
Continue reading Subaru tweaks Legacy and Outback for 2013, kills off 2.5GT

Subaru tweaks Legacy and Outback for 2013, kills off 2.5GT originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 17:24:00 EST.
Subaru has a lot riding on the 2012 New York Auto Show. In addition to the XV Crosstrek, the Japanese automaker will show off its new 2013 Legacy and Outback models, and these aren't exactly minor updates.

Under the hood of 2.5i models will be a brand-new 2.5-liter DOHC boxer four that puts out 173 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque - improvements of three and four, respectively. Furthermore, the 2013 Legacy's new engine and the latest version of Subaru's CVT automatic gearbox achieve estimated fuel economy ratings of 24 miles per gallon city, 32 highway and 27 combined. That's one mile per gallon better across the board, and a six-speed manual will also be available.

The Outback, which boasts 8.7 inches of ground clearance, will manage an estimated 24/30/26 mpg with the same drivetrain. Both models will be available with an optional 3.6-liter flat-six engine mated to a five-speed automatic that offers up 256 horsepower. All-wheel drive is, of course, standard.

Subaru's new EyeSight driver-assist system, which integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning, will debut on the 2013 Legacy and Outback, and you can read plenty more about this technology here. Bluetooth connectivity is also new, along with iPod controls and a USB port. A seven-inch navigation screen will be optional on top-end models.

Styling is tweaked a bit, with a new front fascia standing out as the most obvious change, and Subaru claims that the ride and handling have been improved thanks to a stiffer structure and revised suspension geometry. We'll be sure to bring you live photos from New York, but in the meantime, check out the few shots released so far and the official press blasts for both models after the break.
Continue reading Subaru releases 2013 Legacy, Outback details ahead of New York debuts

Subaru releases 2013 Legacy, Outback details ahead of New York debuts originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 09:00:00 EST.
Trickle-down technology is how four-wheel anti-lock braking systems went from their production debut on a 1978 Mercedes-Benz S-Class to being standard equipment across the board for all vehicles on the road today. It also explains how advanced technologies like adaptive cruise control, pre-collision auto-braking and, to a lesser extent, lane departure warning, has made its way down the funnel to Subaru's mainstream sedans, the 2013 Legacy and Outback.

Beginning with the 2013 model year, both models will be available with the new Subaru EyeSight driver assistance system that consists of a pair of charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras mounted at the top of the windshield on either side of the rearview mirror. This is different from most car-based camera systems on the market today that use a radar-based system mounted somewhere in the front of the car, usually in the grille or front bumper. Subaru says the placement of its EyeSight cameras should help reduce the potential for damage - and likely very expensive repairs - from minor collisions.

What can EyeSight do exactly? For one, it takes stereo images of the view ahead and can detect obstacles, including pedestrians. Under 19 miles per hour, a Pre-Collision Braking System can slow the vehicle or stop it completely if an obstacle is detected and the driver doesn't act. Above 19 mph, EyeSight can still detect objects and slow the car to mitigate damage from a collision. Likewise, the system can see when you wander outside of a lane without using your turn signal and issue an alert. Finally, EyeSight allows for Adaptive Cruise Control that's functional between a wide range of speeds: from 1-87 mph.

Pricing for this option isn't known yet, but EyeSight will officially debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show on the 2013 Subaru Legacy and Outback, though buyers interested in the brand's other products won't have to wait long for it to trickle down to the rest of the lineup.
Continue reading 2013 Subaru models to see with optional EyeSight safety system

2013 Subaru models to see with optional EyeSight safety system originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Mar 2012 18:44:00 EST.
Subaru is recalling certain 2012 model year Legacy sedans and Outback wagons due to side curtain airbags that may not deploy in the event of a crash. A total of 381 vehicles are affected by this recall, all of which were manufactured between December 1 and December 23, 2011.

So, why won't the side curtain airbags deploy? We'll let the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explain it:

These vehicles may be equipped with side curtain airbags that contain an incorrect propellant mixture for the initiator component used, resulting in insufficient output of compressed gas.

We don't need to tell you why having faulty airbags is a bad thing. Subaru will notify its owners and will replace the car's side curtain airbags free of charge. The recall is expected to fully kick off by April, and concerned owners can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information. NHTSA's official statement is available after the jump, as well.
Continue reading Subaru recalling 2012 Legacy and Outback over airbag fault

Subaru recalling 2012 Legacy and Outback over airbag fault originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Feb 2012 14:01:00 EST.
The 2012 Subaru Impreza is just now going on sale, but it's already facing its first major recall. According to a statement from Subaru of America, all 2012 Impreza models built through November 15 are being recalled to replace the brake master cylinder after a number of customers reportedly noted that their cars have "greater than normal" brake pedal travel. The automaker issued a formal statement saying:

While the brakes in the affected population remain operational, repairs involve replacement of the brake master cylinder to correct a potential brake pedal travel condition that is greater than usual.

Subaru's statement also cites that 2012 model year Legacy and Outback models built between October 17 and November 23 are also being recalled for the same problem. The exact number of affected cars has not been released at this time.

What's more, according to CarBuzz.com, Subaru issued a memo to its dealers on November 25 mandating a Stop Sale "effective immediately for 2012 Imprezas as well as certain 2012 Legacy and Outback units." In its official statement - available after the jump - Subaru does not officially confirm that these models are being grounded at its dealerships.
Continue reading 2012 Subaru Impreza, Legacy and Outback models recalled over excessive brake pedal travel

2012 Subaru Impreza, Legacy and Outback models recalled over excessive brake pedal travel originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 11:30:00 EST.
Many of us were big fans of the visuals of the previous-generation Subaru Legacy. While it was a little long-in-the-tooth by the time its replacement rolled around, it was a pretty slick little number. The current Legacy may be more advanced than the model it replaced, but we've never warmed to its look the way we did with the fourth generation model. That's why we're encouraged by these preview images of this new concept.

At the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show later this month, Subaru will unveil the Advanced Tourer Concept seen here, together with its much-anticipated new BRZ coupe. We're hoping this is a glimpse at the next-gen Legacy wagon, as the Advanced Tourer Concept packs much more aggressive, muscular styling than the current model (we're also hoping that Subaru brings back the wagon bodystyle to North America). It's also possible that it will be a standalone model outside of the Legacy range.

The interior has been done up in all manner of luxury features, from lashings of leather and brushed aluminum trim to the panoramic glass sunroof and, intriguingly, an infotainment screen mounted right on the steering wheel.

There's also a new crash avoidance system based on two cameras mounted to the rearview mirror, but the bigger technological feature is the new in-house hybrid drivetrain that couples an electric motor to a 1.6-liter turbo boxer four to deliver the same output as a 2.0- or 2.5-liter but with better fuel consumption, driving all four wheels through a CVT. Like what you see? Check it out in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept to bow in Tokyo

Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept to bow in Tokyo originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 07 Nov 2011 09:27:00 EST.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just announced a safety recall affecting 69,590 model year 2011 Subaru Legacy and Outback vehicles. The recall concerns adhesive, or a possible lack thereof, used to affix moonroof glass to its retainer. This action covers 2011 Legacy and Outback models manufactured from August 3, 2010, through July 1, 2011.

NHTSA says an inadequate amount of adhesive on the moonroofs of affected models could allow the glass to loosen or even detach while the vehicle is in motion. This flying glass, says the agency, could become a road hazard and possibly even lead to a crash.

Subaru will contact owners of affected Legacy and Outback models in October and says its dealers will inspect the adhesive and, if necessary, apply more of the sticky substance to ensure the glass doesn't detach. As is always the case with a federal recall, dealers will inspect and repair components free of charge, and owners are urged to contact Subaru for more info.
Japanese automaker Subaru has issued a recall for Model Year 2010-2011 Outback and Legacy vehicles manufactured from January 7, 2010, through May 20, 2011. Subaru says faulty components inside the wiper motor's bottom cover could overheat.

According to Subaru, if the motor's bottom cover overheats, the windshield wipers may no longer function, which could lead to reduced visibility and increase the chance of a crash.

Subaru will notify owners of the 195,080 affected Outback and Legacy vehicles by the end of November. As is typically the case, dealers will replace defective components free of charge and owners are urged to contact Subaru for more info.
Continue reading Subaru recalls 2010-2011 Legacy, Outback for windshield wiper issue

Subaru recalls 2010-2011 Legacy, Outback for windshield wiper issue originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 08:30:00 EST. Subaru has, like many other Japanese automakers, struggled to get its factories up and running in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But the automaker appears to be making strides towards that goal, as Automotive News reports that the car maker will restart vehicle production Wednesday at its Gumma plant.

The facility produces the Legacy, Forester and Impreza; three vehicles that are very important to the automaker's success in the U.S. Subaru spokesperson Kenta Matsumoto told AN that the plant will run at about half of its typical run rate while the automaker assesses its parts situation. Matsumoto says Subaru has no intention of stopping production now that the plant is coming back online, but added, "The situation with every part isn't entirely clear."

We'll be the first to admit that we went full geek over Tron: Legacy, and gaming website SideQuesting.com is showing its enthusiasm for the franchise by running a contest to reimagine the famous light cycle. Disney's reworked battle bikes for Legacy were brilliant, but SQ wants to see exactly what designers cruising the web can come up with on their own. There's a hitch, though: Artists are supposed to spend no longer than two hours on each submission.

Each design will be featured at SideQuesting.com, and winners will receive cool prizes including an Art of Tron: Legacy book, a white light cycle figurine and a deluxe light cycle figurine. SlideQuesting says that the total value of all the swag is around $75.

If you think you've got what it takes to work up the best design of them all, head over to SideQuesting.com for a look at the full rules and get started.
