The 2012 Women's World Car of the Year Award winners are in, and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque has taken top honors. A jury of female auto writers from a total of 12 countries all voted on this year's winners over four categories, including Family Car, Luxury Car, Sports Car and Economy Car, though the panel also awards a trophy for "supreme winner." This year, the Evoque took first place in both Luxury Car and supreme winner segments.

Interestingly enough, the BMW 3 Series drove off with first place in the Family Car category, while the Porsche 911 took the top Sports Car nod and the Honda Civic won Economy Car honors. WWCOTY says that while each category saw a clear winner, the spots for second and third place in each category switched multiple times as more votes came in. You can check out the full list of winners in the press release below.
Continue reading Ladies Love It: Evoque wins Women's World Car of the Year

Ladies Love It: Evoque wins Women's World Car of the Year originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Oct 2012 18:31:00 EST. Well, now. This is different. The minds at Overfinch have turned their attention to the Land Rover stable and have cooked up a couple of, um, unique versions of both the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. We can certainly get behind the notion of the GTS-X, a slammed Sport with 575 horsepower at the driver's beck and call. While the front fascia is a little garish, the bright orange paint and colossal split-spoke rollers are just demented enough to tickle our fancy. Of course, for $230,100, it better.

Then there's the <strike>purple people eater</strike> Evoque. Overfinch saddled the interior with white leather, bolted on a set of 22-inch wheels and dipped the whole concoction in some very purple paint. We can't say that's a direction we would have gone, but we can also safely assume we aren't Overfinch's target demographic, either. Both creations will be at the Salon Prive London starting September 5. Check out the full press release below.
Continue reading Overfinch does terrible things to Range Rover Sport, Evoque

Overfinch does terrible things to Range Rover Sport, Evoque originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 12 Aug 2012 14:02:00 EST.
India's Big Daddy Customs has made a Moon Rover. What's that? It's a Tata Safari SUV (pictured at right) made to look like a Range Rover Evoque, but only really from the front, at a low angle, ideally in low light and assuming you'd never seen a real Evoque or the donor vehicle before. To get an idea of dimensions, the Evoque is a couple inches wider than a Safari, but the Safari is nearly a foot longer and more than a foot taller.

Having said that, given what Big Daddy started with, it's not entirely dreadful. The Evoque's signatures have been reasonably approximated, and the "custom white paint job" is part of the package. Nothing's been changed inside, but according to the company's Facebook page. "Apart from glass house area, everything else has been modified in the body shell."

So it's good to know that at least they take their work seriously. We think.
Big Daddy Customs turns Tata Safari into Land Rover Evoque originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 Jul 2012 14:04:00 EST.
The turn of the year didn't merely lead us into the Year of the Dragon, but also the year of the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. Halewood's small softroader won a boodle of awards: Autoweek's Best of the Best, Top Gear magazine's and Jeremy Clarkson's choice for Car of the Year, Motor Trend magazine's SUV of the Year and the North American Truck of the Year. For starters. Consumer Reports, however, isn't as swayed, saying that the new BMW X3 "handily outpointed its European rival" in a head-to-head between the two compact luxury crossovers.

We expect there's an Evoque out there with a sore backside because CR did not spare the rod, saying the Evoque scored near the bottom of its category because of "a cramped cabin, stiff ride, artificial-feeling steering and troubling emergency handling." On top of that, its "rear view is poor," its "cargo area is small" and its interior is "noisy" albeit "well finished," and was outdone by the X3's "lavish interior." The baby Land Rover finished so far in the hole that CR couldn't give the vehicle its coveted Recommend rating.

That seems a bit harsh at first glance, especially since comparing interior measurements between the two seems disingenuous when the BMW is so much larger that it's basically in another class. That said, we haven't read the full piece yet, so we'll withhold further commentary. For CR's press release on the Evoque vs. X3 cage match and its comments on the Toyota Prius V, Volkswagen Tiguan and Jeep Wrangler, look no further than after the jump.
Continue reading Bucking trend, Consumer Reports gives nod to BMW X3 over Land Rover Evoque

Bucking trend, Consumer Reports gives nod to BMW X3 over Land Rover Evoque originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 16:31:00 EST. Well, we don't know about all that, but the votes have been tabulated and the assembled jurists (including our own Chris Paukert) have selected the 2012 North American Car and Truck of the Year.

The finalists were whittled down from a list of 30 candidates to include the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra and Volkswagen Passat (on the car side of the equation) and the BMW X3, Honda CR-V and Range Rover Evoque (on the truck side, despite them all being car-based crossovers). And after (what we hope was) careful consideration, the panelists have selected the Elantra and the Evoque as the overall winners.

The awards will undoubtedly sit proudly atop the mantles at both Hyundai and Jaguar/Land Rover's headquarters, but will surely be received with particular jubilation by Land Rover, which has won the award for the first time in this, its largest market.

The 2012 Audi A7 and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque took the top honors, with editor Wes Raynal saying that the Audi is a vehicle with "few peers" thanks its integration of sedan styling and hatchback functionality. The Evoque, meanwhile, won over the hearts and minds of those at Autoweek thanks to its Land Rover roots and excellent ride refinement. The publication says the Evoque redefines the brand.

Autoweek isn't alone in its picks. As you may recall, the editors at our sister site, AOL Autos, chose both the A7 and the Evoque for the website's first-ever car of the year awards, Motor Trend named the Evoque its SUV of the Year, and we're rather fond of them both, as well.

In order to qualify for the Autoweek Best of the Best list, a vehicle had to be completely or substantially new for 2011.

We see the form versus function fight played out on a daily basis in the automotive realm. Designers, engineers and accountants lock horns on every model that ever makes its way to the street in order to come up with a suitable compromise that will successfully appease their respective masters. More often than not, a vehicle's more stylish aspects are left by the wayside as aerodynamics, packaging and economics hammer automotive forms into the same uninspired mold. Anyone who remembers the muscular form of the Chevrolet Volt concept need only look to the limp lines of the production model to see the process in action.

It's something special when an automaker cries "Damn the torpedoes!" and drives an undiluted concept design off of the auto show stage and straight into production. Pupils dilate, cheeks flush and hearts flutter with primordial do-want. Such is the case with the 2012 Range Rover Evoque Coupe. In an era when most automakers wouldn't waste firing a single synapse on the personal utility segment, Land Rover has kicked open the doors on an arena long thought forgotten. With its heart-stopping styling, powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine and surprising off-road chops, the Evoque is exactly what we've been missing from this segment. But who's going to buy it?
Continue reading 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupe

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Dec 2011 11:57:00 EST.
Top Gear magazine has officially named the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque its Car Of The Year for 2011 after snagging top honors in the SUV category. Perhaps even more impressively, Jeremy Clarkson also named the Evoque his favorite vehicle of 2011. The compact luxury SUV faced off against the likes of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, McLaren MP4-12C and Ferrari FF among more common offerings. Top Gear celebrated in classic style by taking the Evoque on an African adventure through the deserts and mountains of Morocco. Sure beats handing an anonymous executive some cheesy trophy on stage.

Readers can find the full tale in any of the magazine's 29 international editions. Clarkson was joined by Richard Hammond, James May, Top Gear magazine editor-in-chief Charlie Turner and the publication's full editorial and road testing staff in picking the 2011 car of the year. The crew isn't the only batch of writers to honor the Evoque. The model has soaked up 34 international awards since it debuted. Follow the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Range Rover Evoque named Top Gear magazine's Car of the Year

Range Rover Evoque named Top Gear magazine's Car of the Year originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Dec 2011 09:28:00 EST.
Word is that Land Rover is considering a brawnier version of the company's new Evoque. Autocar reports that engineers have already snugged a 300 horsepower version of the Ford Ecoboost 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine into the CUV's engine bay. David Mitchell, program director for the vehicle, has already driven the high-performance mule and says that the chassis can take the extra power. Still, the project hasn't been given the green light. According to the UK publication, the biggest hangup is that Land Rover doesn't really have the marketing structure in place for a performance variation.

Currently, the company's sportier models are branded with the Supercharged moniker, but that's something that clearly wouldn't work on a turbocharged four-cylinder model. Autocar quotes Mitchell as saying that Land Rover would have to look into alternative badging or even a sub-brand for the more athletic Evoque. Currently, the most powerful Evoque available comes with a considerably more modest 237 horsepower.
300-horsepower Range Rover Evoque in the cards? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 17:16:00 EST.
The Land Rover Evoque is headed to participate in the next running of the Dakar Rally with a few necessary modifications. The British Excite Rally Raid Team is planning to take to the sands of South America with three cars shelled in the body of an Evoque. Under the hood, however, the T3 racers will make use of BMW straight-six power. The 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine is good for 275 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque with a ZF six-speed gearbox handling the shifting duties.

Each machine will be built by RaBe Race Cars, which has a long history of churning out Dakar-ready hardware for other teams. All three Evoque bruisers will be campaigned by a fully British crew that includes names like Martin Rowe, Andrew Coley and John Hardy. The 2012 Dakar Rally Raid kicks off on January 1, 2012.
Range Rover Evoque readies for Dakar with BMW power originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 16:33:00 EST.
You might figure that horse riding enthusiasts would be diametrically opposed to SUV drivers, but you'd be wrong. At least in the case of Zara Phillips. The British equestrian competitor has been a Land Rover brand ambassador for several years now, and was lucky enough to <strike>snub Victoria Bekham</strike> take delivery of the very first Range Rover Evoque this weekend.

The first model to roll off the production line, Philips' Evoque is a five-door in Stornaway Grey with a 2.2-liter diesel and six-speed automatic. The model's delivery took place at the Burghley Horse Trials, which is sponsored by Land Rover and where officials made use of a fleet of more than 60 vehicles from the legendary off-road marque.

That's horse power for you. And with 20,000 orders on the books, this is just the beginning. Follow the jump to watch footage of the delivery and for the official press release.
Continue reading Land Rover delivers first Evoque to a horseback rider [w/video]

Land Rover delivers first Evoque to a horseback rider [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Sep 2011 16:28:00 EST.
Land Rover is no stranger to the topless utility vehicles. In fact, it was one of the originators, and still offers the Defender as an open-air prospect. But that's a hard-core off-roader. The Evoque, in this and many other ways, charts new territory for the brand.

Rumor has it that the British purveyor of sport-utes is planning a convertible version of the Evoque that will more closely mirror the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet and the rumored upcoming Audi Q5 cabrio. The drop-top version would in all likelihood be based on the three-door model as opposed to the five (like the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited), but aside from the roof configuration, it would likely mirror the hardtop model in every other way.

Could this be the Victoria Beckham special edition that's been touted? That would certainly kill any lingering prospect of men buying the convertible crossover. One way or another, we'll have to wait and see, and for that matter if the rumors will come to fruition at all. But if anyone has the cheek to pull it off, it's Land Rover.
Land Rover to launch convertible Evoque? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 14:31:00 EST.
If you caught this week's episode of Top Gear, you'll have witnessed the ever affable James May waxing on about how the Range Rover Evoque was designed with input from Victoria Beckham. Now it seems the British celeb, who was recently appointed a sort of creative director for Range Rover, is to receive her own special edition of the compact luxury sport-ute.

The special is expected to be launched whenever Victoria is ready to go back to work after having recently given birth to David Beckham's daughter Harper Seven, who is not, at least as of yet, serving as Prime Minister of Canada. In the meantime, little in the way of details are known about what the special will entail, but you can bet that any vehicle named after Posh Spice will be very posh indeed.
Victoria Beckham to get her own special edition Range Rover Evoque originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 11:01:00 EST.
Telly is all grown up. Or, at least the actor that protrayed him in the film Kids is. Leo Fitzpatrick, who also portrayed drug addict Johnny Weeks on The Wire, has decided to go in a different direction for Land Rover's new interactive film Being Henry.

The spot was created by Land Rover as a unique means to tout the many personalization options for its new Evoque. Directed by Nick Gordon, Being Henry allows the viewer to jump into the story and take control of Henry's actions. The result is an engaging, humorous and very different way for an automaker to advertise a product.

Once you reach the end of your decision making process, "the voice" comes in and shows you what type of Evoque fits the decisions you make. We will warn you that some of the language is certainly not safe for work, but the film is definitely worth a few moments of your time. Click past the jump to view a trailer of the film. While some may rightly argue that point, the fact of the matter is that a Land Rover-based 'ute wearing the classic Leaping Cat seems like a foregone conclusion at this point.

And that means it's time for some Rendered Speculation. Photo-manipulator extraordinaire Jon Sibal was commissioned by the boys from AutoGuide.com to combine the recently unveiled Range Rover Evoque with the current fascia and styling details exemplified most recently by the Jaguar XJ sedan... and the result is, well, pretty much exactly what you'd expect.

As for us? We're casting a great big 'No' in the general direction a Jaguar crossover, not that our vote counts for anything. As we see it, utility belongs in the Land Rover showroom and classic British luxury with a sporty bent operates from the Jaguar corner...

Despite the fact that Land Rover has gone out of its way to promote its new Evoque as an environmentally friendly alternative to its normal brand of behemoth globetrotting earth movers, Auto Express reports that the front-wheel drive (optional all-wheel drive, naturally) unibody Rover won't be getting a hybrid powertrain option.

Instead, Land Rover's global product director John Edwards suggests that any future electrically assisted powertrains will likely be featured in the larger Discovery (LR4 in the States) and Range Rovers. Edwards points out that the Evoque was designed as a lightweight machine, and a small four-cylinder diesel engine can provide the kind of fuel mileage targeted for the model.

While it's certainly true that hybrid componentry adds complexity and weight, American and Japanese automakers have proven that it's certainly possible to put the fuel-saving bits and pieces in smaller-sized vehicles. What's more, diesel vehicles aren't exactly commonplace on American roads or dealerships, leaving us to wonder if the U.S. market will be left out of the high-mpg loop yet again.

Does a Jaguar crossover make sense? If you're Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar's Global Brand Director, it certainly does. Speaking to Autocar, Hallmark said that Jaguar "needs a crossover and needs to stop being a saloon-based company." We're a bit confused as to exactly why Jaguar needs a CUV when the typical Jaguar shopper could easily afford something from the Land Rover showroom.

Hallmark adds that a Jaguar XF wagon will appear shortly. That, we like, but with Jaguar making noise about a crossover, we find it hard to imagine an XF station wagon ever rolling into US showrooms. Hallmark goes on to say that lightweight cars will become part of the brand's future DNA.

Wait, so how does this crossover fit in with the brand again?

It's not every day that a new Range Rover is introduced. But when one is, you can count on Azfal Kahn and his crew to go to work on it. And the new Evoque appears to be no exception.

Beyond the photo above, all Project Kahn has released so far about its tuning program for the Evoque is that (a) it's working on one, (b) it's coming some time in the new year and (c) it'll be powered by Cosworth. Kahn has worked with the racing engine manufacturer on previous projects, so that's no big revelation by itself, but it'll be interesting to see what the two British firms have got in store for the new baby Rover beyond a set of flashy rims.

There once was a time when three-door sport-utes were commonplace, but they gradually gave way to the versatility of the five-door body style. The trio-portal is making a comeback these days in the luxury crossover market, thanks to the likes of the new Range Rover Evoque and upcoming Porsche Cajun. And while the three-door versions of both are scheduled to arrive on the scene first, both are being followed by five-door versions. Land Rover has just pulled the sheet on its five-door Evoque, which will make its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The specs are largely the same as the three-door Evoque that bowed at this year's Paris Motor Show, but with a couple extra doors thrown into the mix to enable easier access to the rear seats. Nothing too complicated there, but it could make all the difference for many consumers looking to keep the sleek profile but not willing to forgo the bodystyle.

There's a wealth of details in the press release after the jump and a fresh batch of high-resolution images in the gallery below. If you want to know what a baby Range Rover looks like with the extra openings, check 'em out.

Land Rover is very happy to show off its new Evoque. In fact, the automaker just commissioned an artist to create wire-frame versions of the little luxury crossover. The pieces, of which there are four, have been placed as art installations throughout Paris. The whole concept is designed to highlight the model during its world debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

Four artists were chosen to create the pieces; André (a.k.a. "Monsieur A"), JCDC, Surface To Air and Yorgo Touplas. The unique units can be seen now through the end of September.

We're big fans of wire-frame artwork because it presents a very unique perspective on an everyday object. It's a smart way for Land Rover to get the Parisian locals and visitors talking about their newest model, especially since the city is currently filled with automotive journalists attending the Paris Motor Show and fashionistas in town for Paris Fashion Week.
