Land Rover DC100 Expedition Concept

Not that we don't like the Land Rover DC100 Concept or anything, but this is the third version of the next-gen Defender that Land Rover has trotted out at an auto show in the space of seven months. (Never mind that it looks like they just repainted the Heritage Blue one from the L.A. show.) Forgive us, then, for wishing Land Rover would get on with it and announce that it's going into production.

2012 Land Rover LR4 HSE Luxury Limited EditionBut no. Instead, we get this: The Land Rover LR4 Luxury Limited Edition. With a mere 2,000 available worldwide, Land Rover seems serious about the limited part. A long list of unique trim pieces including "HSE Luxury" badging on the tailgate and interior finishes borrowed from the Range Rover should take care of the rest of the equation.

Land Rover DC100 Concept in LA

Land Rover is continuing to explore how to approach the next generation Defender, as evidenced by this updated version of its DC100 Concept that was initially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The latest version features new 20-inch wheels shod with Cooper all-terrain tires and a new Heritage Blue paint scheme with a Candy Weiss roof.

Land Rover Chief Designer Gerry McGovern, who unveiled the new DC100 Concept to the Los Angeles Auto Show crowd, stressed that while the company is serious about building a new Defender, this particular concept may not be representative of the future production version. "The reality is that we're serious about putting this vehicle into production - not necessarily this design, but a Defender into production," he tells us. "It's one of several design studies under consideration at the moment."

It's apparent that McGovern's design team at Land Rover has struggled wrestling with rendering a modern day Defender that doesn't abandon the model's loyal followers. "Should it be evolutionary or should it be revolutionary? How much of the design cues based on the original functionality are relevant in a modern context? For us we feel it's important to recognize our past but not be harnessed by it. The retro trap is one we have to be very careful of. If you're too retrospective it can be a kiss of death."

The new Land Rover Defender cometh in 2015, so sayeth - officially - Land Rover. When it released information and photos on the DC100 concept not long ago, the accompanying press release stated "Land Rover confirms its intention to launch a new Defender in 2015." Bringing a spot of sun to Defender lovers everywhere, in two weeks the firm has snipped three years off that delivery time.

We haven't got any more information on what the replacement will really have, but the sampler platter of specs we have so far - mixed-alloy platform, aerospace tech, Terrain-i scanning and so on - does tempt. We'll get the whole lot when it's revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, so stay tuned for that... and for 2015. Press blast after the jump.
